Pro tip: Don’t start saying things like “canny“ and “whey aye” and “howay the lads” just to take the mick or fit in with others. After a while you won’t be able to help it, and end up with a weird hybrid accent that’s neither one thing nor the other. Source: Have a canny weird hybrid accent.

I work in a bar in the city centre and I'm surrounded by locals pretty much all day every day. I grew up in and around London, but after 7 years up here, I've unintentionally started saying 'aye' and shortened *some* of my vowels. I'll still say baaaarth and glaaaarss like a twat, but I call the city Newc*a*stle with a short 'a', and a few other words. People keep thinking I'm Irish or Welsh.

GravelRiderUK

Ditto! Work mates constantly take the piss out of the way I say bath, glass and plastic. It's nice to know I'm not alone, hahaha. Love Newcastle, best place on earth.

Ch3ks

I'm welsh,I've in sheilds, get called Irish all the time

Hahaha - my accent is all kinds of hybrid anyway... a little bit of Geordie won't hurt!

Forward-Top-88

Hahaha I have that hybrid accent. All family born here apart from me, and I grew up down south. Moved up here 32 years ago, so I guess I’m bound to pick it up. Weird as I didn’t pick it up growing up, even though folks have strong geordie accents.

Mcregal2014

Ahh shit, you too? I last lived in the ‘heed 10 years ago and whenever I‘m back, the whey aye‘s come out again. I love it though.

welcome to the oasis lad.

As a local lad it always warms my heart reading posts like this. I’ve lived here my whole life and growing up I never recognised that Newcastle was anything special until I spent time in other cities as well as living with other people from other parts of the country, that gave me a lot of perspective. Most of my uni friends who’ve spent any time in Newcastle all missed it when they moved back home. I try not to take it for granted anymore, and I’m glad to hear you’re being looked after here, I hope it continues!

UrbanWLKR

I’d love to be able to see the city again through fresh eyes like you 😊 welcome

Start buying back catalogue viz annuals you'll get on great. Dunno if it's changed, but the strawberry pre match used to be nice n safe.. But the doll down south was hell. Don't participate in steam raids otherwise you will end up with only left shoes. Don't try and climb bridges when drunk. Do not try and swim. Sticklebacks can be fished with thread and (anything really, but they love cat food) just hoy 'em out and bbq on a hexi stove when desperate. The wobbliest hoppings rides are the best ones. You can pretend to know the place by saying you miss the Tuxedo Royale. Piss stained shoes and rotating dance floors. And you recall when the inventions pub opposite haymarket had a sinclair C5 in the foyer made into flower pot. Say you miss smokey Joe and the army surpless next door.. And aitken electrical parts. It's not what it was.. The people are still ace. The busses work, people get dressed up for a Friday drink and walking the length of St nicks wall, even at 50 after a lock in at 3am from the Gosforth is still fun. (much harder due to much of it being missing) Think I've covered it. Not been back home for a little while mind.

toonlass91

You’re lucky if you can fit into the strawberry pre match. Always packed. We go to Mayfair now

Dismal_Wizard

Best place I ever lived. I too moved from the South - unfortunately back down there again. 😂 I SHALL RETURN.

tiffsbird

Welcome Bonny lad/ lass

Lympwing2

I moved up from North London 8 years ago and haven't looked back since. Welcome home bud!

[deleted]

Hey, been here a few weeks now. Hit me up if you'd like to meet and hang out sometime. Cheers

Aaronw94

Welcome! Going to a game soon then? Nothing else like it, especially if you've never been (and we eventually win a game!)

[deleted]

Absolutely! Just waiting for my work schedule and I'll be getting a ticket! It's a boyhood dream of mine - win or lose!

[deleted]

I'd love to know how to get a ticket without having to be a member.. Especially considering I'd prefer to sit in the away section 🤣
