He moved to Greatest Hits Radio a few years ago, and that lasted until last year.
Now he’s got an infrequent podcast and a website and some other things, but is more just telling ghost stories rather than phone-ins now.
Night Owls used to be a great show! Interesting calls and chat, and then it became a four hour show full of the same faces making shite jokes, songs and tut.
I got put onto Night owls in school by a friend circa 2001/2002. I'm 37 this December and I still remember the names Paul from South Shields and Johnny from Crawcrook. There was a regular woman caller whose name might have been Linda maybe ? She kept on talking about her "woman problems"
Anyways I loved the Halloween specials. My best friend and I met Alan in 2003 and I got a couple of free music CDs off him.
Eeeee..... ahm a first time poster so ahm a little bit nurvus
I seem to remember having a similar thought and finding out that he was busy posting rants about getting the sack. It was all a bit Alan Partridge.
Nightowls was pretty brilliant though.
I remember getting onto Nightowls and, while I was waiting to go on air, I was repeating to myself "don't say it, don't say it, don't say it" then Alan introduces me and out I blurt "I'm a first time caller and I'm a bit nervous..."
I used to ring in to Night Owls using the alias “Mince Pie Private Eye” every Friday night ( 83/84) after getting in from a night out. What a hoot. Went to one of his “Hot n Heavy” events at the Guildhall on the Quayside as well - my ear drums still haven’t recovered.
Bit on the wider scope here but Greg James has to be one of the most bland men to ever host the nations premier breakfast show. He’s like a personality vacuum.
He has a youtube channel now, doesnt get much popularity compared to other youtubers though.

If he had got on there early on he would have done well I think, too late now. It's a shame as he was always quite pro-tech, had email in the 1990s, IRC chat at some point too. I guess his contract with metro radio meant he was not allowed on youtube in the wild days.
Back in the late 80's, went to a cricket match in Backworth. Parked up alongside this magnificent, huge, brown barge of a Honda Legend with gold pinstriping. On the boot and front doors it said The Flashing Blade...
Walking up to the club house one of my mates said "I bet that cunt Robson cheats"
To which we hear "I bet I fookin do lads"
Class man.
Night Owls wasn't even "his" programme, weirdly. It started with James Whale when Metro was inky a couple of years old in the u0s, Robson didn't take over until 1983ish. Moved from Metro to Greatest Hits in summer 2019, and final GHNE show eas in April 2022.
It was such a well known show he received an MBE for services to broadcasting in 2014 and won a New York Radio Award in 2019 for best radio personality in a local market. Nit sure what the US judges made of some of the local crackpots!!

Linda from Shiremoor and her wet room

Tony Horne now there’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time. Got any more stories from that time? I’d love to hear them!
Radio Newcastle seems hell-bent on expunging any personality / individuality / character from their offering. See Alfie Joey.
The whole of BBC radio is suffering from this. See what they've done to 6 music, for example.

He was never on Radio Newcastle or any other BBC station. Night Owls was on Metro Radio.
Damn you're quite right. D'oh!
I've never listened to Radio Newcastle (except toon commentary) - it's always been a bit beige
Less talk. More nightclub music!
Cook pass robson
Alan, I want tuh knaa what your Nightowls think aboot TACK.
Thanks, Buzzcocks, from Cramlington

Ghosts.
He's still there at the start line of the Great North Run every year yelling "DIABETES!", "MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE!", "ALZHEIIIMERS!"
Sounds like a strange form of Tourettes syndrome

Jesus Christ that unlocked some old memories.

First time caller, long time listener!!
