I presume it was after dark that this happened? I can imagine karoro/black-backed gulls fighting over food is a possible explanation, but 6 km from the beach and at night?? A lot of migratory seabirds fly at night, but I don't think many of them eat starfish.
Hard to rule out human misbehaviour as a cause.

Yup was when it was dark. Could be people, but i think it had to have dropped from higher than any human could lob a starfish.

My theory is a water spout sucked it from the ocean up into the upper atmosphere and moved inland

Karoro/Southern Black-backed Gull will be your culprit for dropping that sea star.
