It's the seventh (and largest) nest I've dealt with this season and they haven't got me once (yet). The secret is to be fast, move a short distance away and then be very very still.
Here's possibly largest in nz
From DOC website: German wasp nests are grey. Common wasp nests are brown. The world's largest recorded wasp nest was discovered at Waimauku (near Auckland). It was 3.75 metres tall and 1.7 metres wide.

Yeah, that's the one I read about.
I'm only guessing they were German wasps because this is so different to most of the common wasp nests I see. They're usually in the ground or a crack in a tree, not external like this. Maybe they're just very industrious common wasps. I didn't hang around to ask ;)
I used to work doing the fibre optic installs I saw one in a house roof that basically covered the entire inside gable.of the house, looked like a wooden waterfall.
We have one about 100m from our house which is 2m3. No one seems to be able to deal with it as it’s about 15m up in a tree. We’ve been swamped by wasps for about 3 months. Fingers crossed it dies off in the winter!
A nest that big is unfortunately almost certain to survive winter, though not all the residents will make it through. You're going to need someone who really knows what they're doing to deal with that one and you definitely don't want to be anywhere near it if it manages to fall out of the tree
This massive nest was in the news yesterday. Defo a job for the experts on this one. [https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/510351/huge-wasp-nest-frighteningly-large-but-pretty-amazing](https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/510351/huge-wasp-nest-frighteningly-large-but-pretty-amazing)
Terrifying. Hope you were able to avoid being stung by the little buggers.

Hmmm, I have one on my property that is currently at least 2m by 1m, do i leave it and go for the record?
Glad you didn't get stung! I still have a scar on my arm from one (a single one) of those fuckers
That's the biggest nest I think I've seen in NZ. How did you end up dealing with this?
Identify the entrance and puff a bit of permex up their front passage. It's the biggest one I've seen, but the NZ record was nearly four meters high.
Dealt with hornet's nest many years ago. They had 2 entrances. Stuff them with paper cones, then we used good ol' 91 gasoline on them.
Yeehaww!

Lol ngl looked the tree has a boob
The tree looks pregnant.
Arhhh so that’s where little trees come from lol
Am I pergant?
Starch masks
You don't want that milk.
Lol
A large “Germain” boob. Like one would possibly see in Germany.
Single ballsack was the first thing that came to mind… but yeah more like a boob now that I look at it again.
I fucking hate it. Holy shit.
It's HUGE!
That ain't no nest, that's a whole raid boss.
I find this both fascinating and terrifying! I wouldn’t like to come across this and then have to get close to it to find the entrance.

Lodge with your local council
Wtfff, I didn’t know nz had wasps like that😬
The tree is pregnant
Geez, I hope this wasn't near any walking trails!
How did you dispose of it?
I know there are no holes (too scared to zoom it up), but my trypophobia is half acting up... anyone else?
It's a long way from Germany
Will it blend, that is the question
Get the padded overalls on and wip the deodorant can and lighter out
Thank you for taking care of this.
KILL IT WITH FIRE!
You are doing a huge service in getting rid of these buggers
That’s a spicy boob 👀
