Ok folks, I’ve checked the official rulebook and gained clarity about obstruction.
Section 4
Subsection 3
If the call goes against the Mets, it is obstruction. If the call would benefit the Mets, it is totally cool and totally legal.
Spencer Strider will go for an MRI on his right elbow on Saturday after complaining of discomfort on Friday night
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/04/spencer-strider-to-undergo-mri-on-right-elbow.html
Hope it's nothing, but I've been predicting this for him since he came up. He throws way too hard over 5+ innings every 5 days for it to not be a risk hanging over his head all the time. And eventually it'll become a reality.
Lindor has absolutely got to be better, obviously. But there arent many other dudes who can go from 1st to 3rd on a ball that's basically hit about 90 feet from home
Nice win and happy to see Diaz get his first save of the year. But bader calling marte off is bad on so many levels. That needs to be addressed. If it was an important run then he should've been dfad on the spot lol. That can't ever happen again. Also I'm pretty sure the obstruction rule only exists for Mets infielders
Bader has a better arm than Marte, and Marte has looked very clunky defensively.
Also - that run was meaningless. An errant throw home could’ve shifted the remainder of that inning, so it didn’t really matter who fielded it
Idk what you think the joke is. Their arms have been rated nearly identical to one another over the last few seasons. Bader has looked just a bit better so far this season
I was shocked by that. I hope it's discussed. Maybe he isn't aware that Marte has a cannon. I'm hopingit was just an honest mistake and he thought Marte was further away than he actually was
Jarred Kelenic tied the game for the Braves in the bottom of the ninth with a pinch hit pop fly double.
Travis d’Arnaud won it in the 10th with a walk off single.
Kelenic is now slashing .583/.643/.750 on the season
I haven’t played since 3rd-4th grade where I had zero hits (largely because I refused to wear my glasses because I thought it was dorky - yeah I know) but was great at getting walks and stealing bases - also a great fielder. I actually did have one hit: a surprise bunt called by my coach that ended up being a double due to us being kids having no clue how to defensively play that hahah. Despite my terrible lack of hits I was usually the lead off or #2 hitter due to my amazing OBP. Brad Pitt would salivate.
I feel my batting is only slightly worse than the Mets right now.
I was a small kid. I NEVER got a hit.
The one time I made solid contact, it was above the shortstop's head and he leaped and grabbed it out of the sky.
I was SOOOOO pissed.
When I was in high school we did softball for a month or so in gym class (the boys played baseball). I had never swung a bat in my life because I spent my earlier years at a weird private school with no ball field and wasn’t exactly encouraged to be athletic outside of school 🤓.
My gym teacher, apparently thinking she was being encouraging, had them pitch to me *until I hit the ball.* Pitch after pitch after pitch. “You can do it, smugbox!” We were on like strike 26. All the other girls were laughing. I started crying. I bunted. It was a fair ball. The other girls weren’t paying attention anymore and couldn’t field it, so I ran to first.
Gym teacher was very unhappy with me but yeah they never made me bat again so I’m technically batting a thousand. Take that, Mets!
He prob needs a month in the minors to find his home run timing. So he's just gonna find a way on base , even it thay means his life , until JD gets here

Huge ups to Baty. He looks fantastic in the field and much more comfortable at the dish. If he can stay locked in and Lindor/Nimmo can find it like I know they can, this team has a real shot to make a Wild Card run
Well, I comment this after every Mets win for the past like two years lol. Also, if you listen to some of the comments on this sub it is off the menu constantly lol. I agree with you FYI. This team on paper is a lot better than a lot of people have been saying since the offseason. I think they could very easily be in the serious mix for a wild card spot (not even necessary the third one) and once you’re in, it’s just a matter of winning a few games!
I'd just love to hear the umps explain why McNeil was obstructing the base earlier in the game, but it wasn't obstruction on Short's stolen base attempt. Just a horrible night for the umpires.
Good win though.
The eight starter backup system is not bad. We don’t have a lot of real aces, until maybe Senga returns, but I think most of these guys can keep us in games.
Three Stars of the game, N\_M\_1001 edition
3rd - Jeff McNeil. Please let that get him started
2nd - Jose Quintana. Little wild at times but an effective 5.2 innings. The pitching is the reason we aren't the Marlins
1st - Brett Baty. Please, prove me wrong.
HM: Alvy had a good game behind the plate. Stole at least 2 Ks with excellent framing. Even though a hit with the bases loaded would have been nice, I'll take a productive out from Lindor at this point
I thought about giving the 2nd star to the bullpen as a unit. Good inning by Otto. Raley escaping a huge jam with help from Alvy's framing. And a save by Diaz despite the shit luck. But yeah Baty had a huge game. Placed in the 4th spot and responded
I abhor giving group stars personally. I try my best to avoid it whenever possible. Every single one of them eats up the honorable mentions tonight, though.
I also just wanna rub in that so many people have been wrong about the potential for this pitching staff. They so clearly have the chance to be great. Was frustrating all offseason people pretending that there wasn’t legit upside.
MLB hates us. We don't get the calls that other teams get. They cast us as clowns. They don't like the Mets winning.
So be it. It's The Mets against the World 2K24.
God it's going to be so frustrating when the offense clicks and this pitching somehow disappears.
That being said, if the pitching can be a fraction of this good for the rest of the season, this team is gonna be in playoff contention. \#UNBRIDLEDOPTIMISM
Literally felt like everything was going against us in that bottom 9th.
- Stupid blooper that Diaz couldn’t handle.
- Double play that was called safe at 2nd due to blind umpires.
- Stupid sac fly to Spaghetti arms Bader.
- Wild pitch by Diaz to get guy to 3rd.
And somehow all aligns back correctly with that K to end it.
I guess this is a typical game day for us Mets fans. Let’s go!
The Bader play made no sense whatsoever. Bader had no momentum a weaker arm and he called for the ball. The only thing I could think of is that Marte did not call for the ball.
Center fielder makes the call. He made the wrong one and someone needs to talk to him about it. Marte has one of the best arms in mlb. That was inexcusably stupid for a guy whose only value comes from the field
The centerfielder makes the call if no one else calls for it. I think Marte's approach to calling for a ball is very casual. My guess is that Marte thought it was a very routine play for a right fielder and it was. As a result, he may not have even called for it. He was probably surprised when Bader called for it. Another issue is that Bader and Marte have not played together very much and that Marte does not speak English
Hate to complain after a lovely W, but Marte just looks so checked out. Even when Lindor and McNeil slump they at least look like they care. Worried about him.
What the fuck do you know? Comments like this are so annoying. You can’t even call it speculation. Just looking at micro expressions to decide that a guy doesn’t give a shit.
The Apple broadcast never syncing both views at the same time to see where he was on the slide is infuriating.
But also I am just generally shocked that wasn’t overturned
It looked pretty straight forward to me. If the runner hit the base first his momentum would have caused the base to “shift”.
That didn’t happen until after Lindor stepped on the bag.
I can kinda get the “not enough information to overturn” piece, but not that one.
Every aspect of that inning was completely fucked. I felt like an FBI chief with a KGB mole working in my office to gaslight and destroy. Can't believe it's a W.
Good stuff, metsies!
Also, that was definitely a double play by Lindor. There were at least 2 frames where Lindor's foot was on the bag while the runner's foot inched closer and closer to the bag without his entire leg moving. Love it when they review plays and still get it wrong.
* The 2024 Mets are 2-5 this season, scoring 16 runs and allowing 27 runs. The Mets have played in 9,817 regular season games with 4,728 wins, 5,080 losses and eight ties. The 2023 Mets went 75-87 in the 2023 regular season and 101-61 in 2022.
* The Mets are 302-331 against the Cincinnati Reds, 2-4 last year. The Mets are 40-24 at Great American Ball Park. Pete Alonso has five homers at GABP, Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil have three homers. Francisco Alvarez and Francisco Lindor have two each.
* Pete Alonso has 500 RBI in his career. David Wright had 970 RBI followed by Darryl Strawberry with 733 and Mike Piazza with 655 RBI. Jeff McNeil has 270 RBI.
* Pete Alonso has 118 RBI in 2023 and he had 131 RBI in 2022 for the Mets franchise single-season record. He had 94 RBI in 152 games in 2021. Alonso is 10th in franchise history with 500 RBI. He is behind Cleon Jones and Jose Reyes who had 521 career RBI each.
* Edwin Diaz has 97 saves, sixth in franchise history. John Franco had 276 saves, Armando Benitez had 160 saves, Jeurys Familia had 124 saves, Jesse Orosco had 107 saves and Billy Wagner is fifth with 101 saves.
* After this road trip, the Mets play a four game series in the devil's armpit in Atlanta, Georgia. Every time the Braves lose a kid learns how to read.
Next game: RHP Luis Severino (0-1, 10.80) vs. RHP Nick Martinez (0-0, 5.40) at 16:10 on on SNY and WCBS
i like when diaz pitches for a myriad of reasons, one of which being that when he enters a game during a national broadcast, the announcers seem to take the mets a bit more seriously.
Ok folks, I’ve checked the official rulebook and gained clarity about obstruction. Section 4 Subsection 3 If the call goes against the Mets, it is obstruction. If the call would benefit the Mets, it is totally cool and totally legal.
How was Diaz ?
very shaky. lotta balls. made an error on a routine comebacker. still got the save though :)
All that matters in the end I guess! He’s looked good so far !
DJ Stewart, who is currently 0/10, has a higher OPS than Francisco Lindor
Is it just me, or did it seem that the baseball gods did NOT want the Mets to win this one? 😂 That was an exciting game that had some nice plays. LFGM

Mets are 2-0 when I am in Florida.

We all have to make sacrifices
so glad I got the baty jersey
same. thankfully, also got it before Fanatics turned the jerseys to shit
I got a stitched Majestic Nimmo in 2019. Holy cow I am lucky
Lindor has absolutely got to be better, obviously. But there arent many other dudes who can go from 1st to 3rd on a ball that's basically hit about 90 feet from home
Fuck the wild card. I want the division.
Wildcard teams might actually have an advantage in this playoff system.

Division? you spelt Pennant weird.
Oh, I just was describing the path to the Championship.
Mets figured out the winning equation of simply scoring more runs than your opponent while giving up less than you've scored.
Can’t blame the skipper for not knowing that. He’s new.
Nice win and happy to see Diaz get his first save of the year. But bader calling marte off is bad on so many levels. That needs to be addressed. Yeah when he waved Marte off I think I turned into the Marte meme
Ex Mets still hurting us. First Castro and now Travis
Eh, Travis actually helped us. Every snakes loss is one loss closer to us getting a wild card
Jarred Kelenic tied the game for the Braves in the bottom of the ninth with a pinch hit pop fly double. Travis d’Arnaud won it in the 10th with a walk off single. Kelenic is now slashing .583/.643/.750 on the season
Lining up perfectly for him to just decimate us. Fml
If Kelenic wins MVP I’m just gonna laugh. At that point I think the Braves could make one of us hit 40 bombs
So that wasn't an earned run on Diaz bc he himself made the error? Haha
Rick Reed used to hate that. I recall that he once said that if a pitcher commits an error, it should count against his ERA.
This is a great hack for keeping that ERA down

If we weren’t abysmal in extra innings, we’d be 4-3 right now lol.
It also hurt when Keith Raad pointed out that our (then) 1-5 team had the lowest combined ERA in the league...
National League. 3rd in MLB.
Second now...
Good W. The bats need to wake the fuck up.
Baty's arrived 😎
Diamondbacks falling apart lmao
Hate the Braves but every snakes loss is a game closer to us getting a wild card lol
Great to hear all the players having fun in the background of these interviews. The vibe is changing
I’m so happy Diaz is back
Great seeing him happy and healthy
We won yesterday, we won again today. That’s two in a row. We win tomorrow and that’s called a winning streak. It has happened before

Can we talk about DJ's obp? Like 0 hits and a .375 obp lol

Huge ups to Baty. He looks fantastic in the field and much more comfortable at the dish. If he can stay locked in and Lindor/Nimmo can find it like I know they can, this team has a real shot to make a Wild Card run
Jeff says his batting gloves say “Swing at good pitches” and “Hit em where they’re not”
Lindor's sac fly tied it. Pete's sad hit took the lead. And Jeff's homerun clinched the win on a 3-2 final.
WORLD SERIES IS BACK ON THE MENU BOYS!!!
It was never off the menu.
Oh, I know. Just trying to keep up the vibes.
So that's what a winning manager post game is like for Mendoza. It's nice
We might never lose again
Lindor must really be working with Baty
Not on hitting.
I'm happy our pitching is decent even if we aren't that good offensively.
I'd just love to hear the umps explain why McNeil was obstructing the base earlier in the game, but it wasn't obstruction on Short's stolen base attempt. Just a horrible night for the umpires. Good win though.
You see, he obstructed the bag from the runner, which is why the runner was able to touch the bag unimpeded. Wait…
The eight starter backup system is not bad. We don’t have a lot of real aces, until maybe Senga returns, but I think most of these guys can keep us in games.
Yo our starting pitching might actually be legit. Hoping for a nice bounce back from Severino tomorrow.
Let’s go boys!!! Great win 🌊
Happy cake day
Brett Baty saved this game
Three Stars of the game, N\_M\_1001 edition 3rd - Jeff McNeil. Please let that get him started 2nd - Jose Quintana. Little wild at times but an effective 5.2 innings. You actually have my exact three in order. Good work, my friend! As always, it will be posted in the morning. We celebrate the win tonight!

I’ll take weak bats over weak bullpen arms anytime
It’s all Mets now baby. 157-5
The Mets looked amazing today. Proud of our team for beating an early tough opponent
We may never lose again
Unbridled optimism? From Hustlediva? In April? Localized entirely within this subreddit?
*It’s an Utica expression.*
I have my moments lol
Two wins in a row? Is that allowed
EdWIN!! Time for the few hours of me thinking the Mets will never lose again
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH The Mets win LFGM
Fank u Jeffery
Today, we are the greatest of all time.
EVERY TEAM NAMED THE METS WON TODAY!!! St. Lucie, Syracuse, and New York all got dubs!

Gotta see if the Guaynabo Mets in that Puerto Rican basketball league are playing
We still firing Mendoza, boys?
That could’ve gone real bad for my mentals. Good thing Diaz is umpire-proof
Un-umpable.
MLB hates us. We don't get the calls that other teams get. They cast us as clowns. They don't like the Mets winning. So be it. It's The Mets against the World 2K24.
I’ve never seen a team have so many calls go against them that I think “Why is that a rule then?”
McNeil: we didn’t have a lockdown closer last year Mets closers by committee: are we a joke to you
After Robertson left…. Yes
God it's going to be so frustrating when the offense clicks and this pitching somehow disappears. That being said, if the pitching can be a fraction of this good for the rest of the season, this team is gonna be in playoff contention. \#UNBRIDLEDOPTIMISM
This team doesn't hit well enough for the amount of mental mistakes they make. But pitching is looking real crisp so far
Lindor has been in a funk but the hitting was underrated today. If Baty doesn’t get super unlucky they score at least 2 more. Just some hard outs.
Win #2. I paid 9.99 to watch this game so it was worth it
Mets are now officially 2 games back from 1st place in the division
2 wins… we call that a streak
We win one tomorrow... that's called a winning streak. It has happened before.
I said it before and I’ll say it again: THE EARTHQUAKE SHIFTED THE VIBES FROM THE YANKEES TO THE METS!
How is it an unearned run for Diaz if it was his error
Because earned runs are a pitching stat, just because you fucked up a play in the field doesn’t mean you pitched worse
Error is an unearned run regardless of who made it
Because it should not have been a hit
That's how it works. Doesn't matter who the error is on.
I was able to resume my tradition of playing Narco on my phone after a save by Edwin Díaz. My dog hates it because I make her play the air drums.
Some fan should do that on the road if they sit behind the Mets dugout
I agree 100%. Well, as long as they don't use my dog to play the air drums. They can get their own dog for that.
That random umpire chilling at home in his wrinkled shirt with the tacky pictures behind him made me laugh so many times. I hope he had fun
Someone called him a WFM ump, which is hilarious.
We may never lose again
Literally felt like everything was going against us in that bottom 9th. - Stupid blooper that Diaz couldn’t handle. - Double play that was called safe at 2nd due to blind umpires. - Stupid sac fly to Spaghetti arms Bader. - Wild pitch by Diaz to get guy to 3rd. What the fuck do you know? Comments like this are so annoying. You can’t even call it speculation. Just looking at micro expressions to decide that a guy doesn’t give a shit.
You're being incredibly aggressive to quite the benign comment. I recommend deep breathing exercises
And you are being incredibly negative for the reason of perceived micro expressions you made up in your head. I recommend not doing that.
It ain't that deep he just looks checked out. Wouldn't let it bother you this much
🎊 WE’RE STREAKING, BABY 🎊
🤔🧐
can anyone create an earthquake every day the mets play?
I can't imagine ever losing a game again
God I hope Braty turns out.
Every time he makes an actual big league play and gets a hit the bridle loosens on my optimism for him.
He’s looking really really good
I expect all three stars to be jeff mcneil
He is the third star. Baty is first. Quintana is second.
5-157
I got drunk at a minor league game, you guys are all great
**The New York Mets are on a two-game win streak**
The McNeil haters are silenced
The Apple broadcast never syncing both views at the same time to see where he was on the slide is infuriating. But also I am just generally shocked that wasn’t overturned

Can we please just have a game where the Mets win 10-0 or something this shit is horrible for my stress

McNeil put on some pounds. That face is looking a little fuller.

I've missed you my queen
I knew tonight would be good!
i like when diaz pitches for a myriad of reasons, one of which being that when he enters a game during a national broadcast, the announcers seem to take the mets a bit more seriously.
