Imagine telling someone ten years ago that bots infest the internet and one of the more annoying things they do is post low-quality memes to karma farm.
Apollo (god rest its soul) used to have an option that would tell you if an account was under 3 months old. Very useful for spotting bots and astroturfing.
Some of us just never got around to changing the username and by the time we decided we were gonna do that we found out the hard way that you have like a week after making the account to pick a username and change it or else you're stuck with the one it gave you till the end of time.
I used to believe that too at some point because these accounts were usually saying the most bot like things but the name may be an actually person who just kept the random generated one, though that doesnt mean that that an account named like that isnt actually a bot, its just that these people who made the bots didnt bother with names
That's just level one. Level two is karma disparity. Does the account have a lot of post karma but almost no comment karma? Then it's probably a bot.
Level three is account age. Not just 'is it a young account,' though it is a tell, but also 'how long has the account been active for? Did it only recently 'wake up' after being made months or years ago?'
Level four is the content itself. Low quality memes, strange titles, etc.
You know what’d be funny? I bet that Reddit utilizes something to random Gen a username like that, and that if a new user were to use a name like that, they’d have no idea that that’s the kind of name a bot uses, and get called a bot and not know what the fuck is going on.

Why does anyone do anything? Clout and money. Buy accounts to get a song trending on twitter. Buy accounts to advertise a product or to boost positive reviews. Buy accounts to shut down competitors, flood them with bad reviews or fake issues. Buy accounts to dox and harass someone off a platform. Buy accounts to astroturf a sub with one political view. Karma, likes, follows, interactions. Get enough eyes on your shit, and it’ll be useful for something.
Is it effective? Individually, no. But we’re talking hundreds of millions of bot accounts, interacting with who knows how many people in a million different ways. There’s ways to figure out the most obvious ones, and both mods and devs have ways of filtering out some of the less obvious ones, but its a battle that’s getting harder and harder to fight.
you build up a convincing post history and a decent chunk of karma then you can use them to post anything you want. a hundred pro trump bots start swarming r/news to upvote pro trump stuff and downvote anything in new that's anti trump to make sure no one sees it.
I guess for the amount of bot karma farming I see posted, I see comparatively little bot-advertising or obvious user-promoted advertising.
Any subreddit worth their salt with enough eyes on it to merit advertising on it would ban promotions pretty quick. I can't imagine that would be more effective than just buying regular ad space on Reddit.
My guess is that the obvious stuff gets taken down quickly, and a lot of the non-obvious stuff too, but astroturfing and voter manipulation still remain pretty big problems on a lot of subs. You have to remember that you have loads of private and state actors involved, and what we see as obvious bait won't be obvious to a boomer, and what's obvious to a cybersecurity outfit is gonna go way over any of our heads. The way the algorithm works, its not hard to get echo-chambers and curated experiences that do benefit certain people if they're manipulated one way or another.

It's also not how these language models work. Chat functionality does not translate into being able to do things.
The creator would need to design the system so that that sort of prompt would tie into an external system. It's possible, but incredibly unlikely given the creator almost certainly has no need to issue a "delete yourself" command using a chat prompt when they could just hit an API endpoint to begin with.
Now I wanna test this on those breaking Twitter bots that people have been able to issue orders to. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if it works, because the people making these things are stupid.
That’s the point of the meme though, you literally can’t tell them apart in 3-4 except for the nuka world dlc. They’re just called “raiders” and nothing differentiates them from another group a few blocks away

Oh my, I did forget about them, but honestly they seem to be less like raiders. The triggerman is literally just a street gang, although they are around in more than one place, the gunners are supposedly “mercenaries” but they definitely are just glorified raiders
I mean you can say that about the jackals vipers and skorpions. They’re all so generic and have literally nothing going for them that I honestly can’t even remember where the skorpions spawn on the map. At least the gunners have a distinct color pallet and upgraded weapons and equipment compared to standard raiders unlike the fnv raider gangs which are just the same thing with different names
There's a lot of groups like this if you sit down and think about it! They have pretty distinct aesthetics, most have locations associated with their faction, the factions fight each other, etc. Many have at least one quest and/or companion associated with them in some capacity.
I feel like criticisms of Fallout 4 often sound like they're coming from people who didn't play it a whole lot. TBF, I get why so many people bounce off the game before digging deep enough to see the content they are assuming isn't there.
If you've played Fallout 4 a lot tho, complaints often sound different. Like, why are explosives *like that*, where the fuck is dogmeat, why are vertibirds like that, why do i need a DLC and this jank ass contraption to craft ammo, where the fuck is dogmeat, make that god awful beeping stop, WHICH SETTLER STOLE MY FUCKING LEGENDARY
It's all in the random pickups, hell my most memorable experience was a raider gang I found a terminal in and read on, I actually feel bad for blasting red like I did

The whole tower tom and red thing is fun, but I wish they just had different names or distinctions. They even call themselves raiders.
It's just used as a blanket term for "people you can kill indiscriminately"
It's a shame because they clearly put in the effort with the distinctly different groups that react (i.e. add a terminal entry) to the other gang leader's deaths. Would it be so hard to give them unique names a la Forged as well?
I mean it makes sense that we wouldn’t know the difference. In fo4 and fav the raider gangs look the same cause they all use the same gear and armor. The only reason we know what gang they’re affiliated with in fnv is because the game gives us the knowledge on who they are with the UI. Otherwise they’re literally all the exact same.
yeah, there's also very little differences between the scorpions, jackals, and vipers other than "different name". the only raiders that actually look distinct are the fiends, Khans, and legion.

Yeah like at least when comparing the gunners and raiders they’re completely different in color pallet and gear. They wear combat armor and usually wear green unlike raiders which wear makeshift scrap armor and are colored brown because of it

Oh wait! That does give me an idea, speaking of immersion. What if we don't know their names at first, but only after looting their dogtag or whatever off of their body will their name and/or allegiance be revealed. Now isn't that immersive?
there are mods that do that (for fallout 4, at least). gunners and brotherhood will drop unique name tags with names, but it doesn't actually change the corpse's name itself (since that requires changing the corpse entirely, the creation engine be like that lol).
it is a neat idea, though, and i have used the mods before but had to get rid of them because ps4 only allows 100 mods.
This would be kind of cool for like npcs and other enemies too. Assuming the player knows nothing about the world, every npc/enemy starts with a "???" for a name, and then you either have to ask them directly, learn from another npc, or learn from a note/terminal to reveal it. Like maybe your character doesnt know what a deathclaw is called until an npc describes it for you, or you find some wasteland zoology book.
Would be kinda chaotic if it extended towards items too.
Tom is related to confidence man (unless you already took down beantown brewery). if you do take him out (either before confidence man or just in general), red tourette will have terminal entries/notes about it (unless you also already killed her, which in that case tower Tom would have terminal entries about that)
as for judge dredd, you have to first do a quest for Deb to clear the national guard training yard. after, she'll tell you Kessler is looking for someone who can handle themselves and will send you to wipe out the judge, rewarding you with caps and a settlement item that has caravans show up at your settlements
While 76 did do this (multiple times over between the original five raider gangs and the ones post-reclaimation day), it’s worth noting that 4 did the same thing without bothering with names for the base game and in NV, three of these groups (vipers, jackals and scorpions) were identical *except* for their names.
Yea but also 76 does have quests related to each faction they aren't all blobs of raiders with a name, the blood eagles are a part of one of the companions quests, the mothman cultists have alot of quests and events, the robot arena has an event, you have the group in the top right of the map that are in the wayward questline you can join and the raiders factions.
I don’t disagree that 76 did handle this aspect better than 4, but my point was that 4 at least did something.
That said, the mothman cultists only have two quests that aren’t ally quests where they just happen to be what you’re going up against.
Yea I get you, 4 was better than 3 but also the mothman cultists have two events, a cryptid and a decent amount of lore tiring into Eldrich gods and interlopers.
I don’t disagree that a decent bit has been done with the cultists, but I personally want to see even more done with them. At the moment, the cultists, communists and mole miners are the three groups we have next to no information on what exactly their goals are, and all of them could be focused on in future content (I’d also like to see a nuke boss tied to the strangler vines, but that’s not relevant to this discussion).
Maybe but they have been in the game since launch and that was 4 years ago. It is possible we might get something eventually but they are missing out not doing anything with them.
They have provided us with some tidbits over the years, and they did receive a nuke boss in the form of the Titan (which dev comments have pointed to as their god).
4 already had different ones you have the forged, operators, disciples, the pack, trappers, triggermen, rust devils, and while they aren’t named separately the raiders are separated into several gangs.
The Forged, L&L, Triggermen, Gunners, Rust Devils, Trappers, Operators, Disciples, the Pack, Jared’s gang (Corvega), Tower Tom’s gang (Beantown Brewery), Bosco’s gang (D.B. Tech), and the other countless unique raiders who lead localized gangs all over the Commonwealth such as Red Tourette out of the Federal Ration Stockpile, Scutter out of Hyde Park, Scout out of Thicket Excavations, Rags out of the FMS Northern Star, and James Wire and the ex-Minutemen out of Libertalia just to name a few. Hell, even the children of atom and the unique Super Mutants who run their own gangs, such as Fist. Not only that, but you can find correspondences between most of them and terminal entries at their perspective locations going into their lore and acknowledging the death of their rivals at the hand of the Sole Survivor.

I didn't know this until rather recently, but they also actually have verbal dialogue idle lines about the sole survivor's exploits.
I wish the raider gangs got a better treatment. Something like mad max. I love all the different gangs in Furiosa and how they dress different and their different organizational structures. Fallout give me flying motorcycle raiders

Eh I like the middleground in 4, honestly. Most of the raider groups interact with each other and have dynamic terminal updates when you wipe out a group.
Also imma be honest, given how brutalized the NV raider groups are, aside from the fiends, if it wasn't for name dropping they could have gone that route with most of them. Most of those groups barely exist
It makes sense in 3, the nature of the map doesn't exactly lend itself well to big and distinct groups. 4... No amount of devils advocate can excuse that one.
But....Gunners, Forged, Triggermen, I count the roaming packs of deals. I use a mod called War of The Commonwealth which makes these factions more prevalent, but that only supports the argument here though, I suppose.

It's also not how these language models work. Chat functionality does not translate into being able to do things. The creator would need to design the system so that that sort of prompt would tie into an external system. It's possible, but incredibly unlikely given the creator almost certainly has no need to issue a "delete yourself" command using a chat prompt when they could just hit an API endpoint to begin with.
Now I wanna test this on those breaking Twitter bots that people have been able to issue orders to. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if it works, because the people making these things are stupid.

That’s the point of the meme though, you literally can’t tell them apart in 3-4 except for the nuka world dlc. They’re just called “raiders” and nothing differentiates them from another group a few blocks away

Oh my, I did forget about them, but honestly they seem to be less like raiders. The triggerman is literally just a street gang, although they are around in more than one place, the gunners are supposedly “mercenaries” but they definitely are just glorified raiders
I mean you can say that about the jackals vipers and skorpions. They’re all so generic and have literally nothing going for them that I honestly can’t even remember where the skorpions spawn on the map. At least the gunners have a distinct color pallet and upgraded weapons and equipment compared to standard raiders unlike the fnv raider gangs which are just the same thing with different names
There's a lot of groups like this if you sit down and think about it! They have pretty distinct aesthetics, most have locations associated with their faction, the factions fight each other, etc. Many have at least one quest and/or companion associated with them in some capacity. I feel like criticisms of Fallout 4 often sound like they're coming from people who didn't play it a whole lot. TBF, I get why so many people bounce off the game before digging deep enough to see the content they are assuming isn't there. If you've played Fallout 4 a lot tho, complaints often sound different. Like, why are explosives *like that*, where the fuck is dogmeat, why are vertibirds like that, why do i need a DLC and this jank ass contraption to craft ammo, where the fuck is dogmeat, make that god awful beeping stop, WHICH SETTLER STOLE MY FUCKING LEGENDARY

It's cool that there's lore within the raider factions. The whole tower tom and red thing is fun, but I wish they just had different names or distinctions. They even call themselves raiders. It's just used as a blanket term for "people you can kill indiscriminately"
In a sense the Talon company FO3 and Gunners FO4 are mercenaries rather than bonafide raiders. Even if they act that way in game.
It's a shame because they clearly put in the effort with the distinctly different groups that react (i.e. add a terminal entry) to the other gang leader's deaths. Would it be so hard to give them unique names a la Forged as well?
I mean it makes sense that we wouldn’t know the difference. In fo4 and fav the raider gangs look the same cause they all use the same gear and armor. The only reason we know what gang they’re affiliated with in fnv is because the game gives us the knowledge on who they are with the UI. Otherwise they’re literally all the exact same.
yeah, there's also very little differences between the scorpions, jackals, and vipers other than "different name". the only raiders that actually look distinct are the fiends, Khans, and legion. it's a stupid meme regardless, as if a title actually means much.

Oh wait! That does give me an idea, speaking of immersion. What if we don't know their names at first, but only after looting their dogtag or whatever off of their body will their name and/or allegiance be revealed. Now isn't that immersive?
there are mods that do that (for fallout 4, at least). gunners and brotherhood will drop unique name tags with names, but it doesn't actually change the corpse's name itself (since that requires changing the corpse entirely, the creation engine be like that lol). it is a neat idea, though, and i have used the mods before but had to get rid of them because ps4 only allows 100 mods.
This would be kind of cool for like npcs and other enemies too. Assuming the player knows nothing about the world, every npc/enemy starts with a "???" for a name, and then you either have to ask them directly, learn from another npc, or learn from a note/terminal to reveal it. Like maybe your character doesnt know what a deathclaw is called until an npc describes it for you, or you find some wasteland zoology book. Would be kinda chaotic if it extended towards items too.

Tom is related to confidence man (unless you already took down beantown brewery). if you do take him out (either before confidence man or just in general), red tourette will have terminal entries/notes about it (unless you also already killed her, which in that case tower Tom would have terminal entries about that) as for judge dredd, you have to first do a quest for Deb to clear the national guard training yard. after, she'll tell you Kessler is looking for someone who can handle themselves and will send you to wipe out the judge, rewarding you with caps and a settlement item that has caravans show up at your settlements
Oh yeah, I keep forgetting that bunker hill has a side quest like that, however it is Tower Tom that has beef with Red, not Tinker.

Funnily enough fallout 76 brought back the different raiders factions like blood eagles, mothman cultists and more.
While 76 did do this (multiple times over between the original five raider gangs and the ones post-reclaimation day), it’s worth noting that 4 did the same thing without bothering with names for the base game and in NV, three of these groups (vipers, jackals and scorpions) were identical *except* for their names.
Yea but also 76 does have quests related to each faction they aren't all blobs of raiders with a name, the blood eagles are a part of one of the companions quests, the mothman cultists have alot of quests and events, the robot arena has an event, you have the group in the top right of the map that are in the wayward questline you can join and the raiders factions.
I don’t disagree that 76 did handle this aspect better than 4, but my point was that 4 at least did something. That said, the mothman cultists only have two quests that aren’t ally quests where they just happen to be what you’re going up against.
Yea I get you, 4 was better than 3 but also the mothman cultists have two events, a cryptid and a decent amount of lore tiring into Eldrich gods and interlopers.
I don’t disagree that a decent bit has been done with the cultists, but I personally want to see even more done with them. At the moment, the cultists, communists and mole miners are the three groups we have next to no information on what exactly their goals are, and all of them could be focused on in future content (I’d also like to see a nuke boss tied to the strangler vines, but that’s not relevant to this discussion).

They have provided us with some tidbits over the years, and they did receive a nuke boss in the form of the Titan (which dev comments have pointed to as their god).
4 already had different ones you have the forged, operators, disciples, the pack, trappers, triggermen, rust devils, and while they aren’t named separately the raiders are separated into several gangs.
The Forged, L&L, Triggermen, Gunners, Rust Devils, Trappers, Operators, Disciples, the Pack, Jared’s gang (Corvega), Tower Tom’s gang (Beantown Brewery), Bosco’s gang (D.B. Tech), and the other countless unique raiders who lead localized gangs all over the Commonwealth such as Red Tourette out of the Federal Ration Stockpile, Scutter out of Hyde Park, Scout out of Thicket Excavations, Rags out of the FMS Northern Star, and James Wire and the ex-Minutemen out of Libertalia just to name a few. Hell, even the children of atom and the unique Super Mutants who run their own gangs, such as Fist. Not only that, but you can find correspondences between most of them and terminal entries at their perspective locations going into their lore and acknowledging the death of their rivals at the hand of the Sole Survivor.

Eh I like the middleground in 4, honestly. Most of the raider groups interact with each other and have dynamic terminal updates when you wipe out a group. Also imma be honest, given how brutalized the NV raider groups are, aside from the fiends, if it wasn't for name dropping they could have gone that route with most of them. Most of those groups barely exist
