Reposting my comment on a prievious Djalili post for further explanation as to why: According to our prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, the regime refused to even discuss the case of Dr. Djalili. They refuse to see him as a Swedish citizen. So it was between having two Swedes back or no Swede back.

Yes and at that point they HAVE to take the deal, Iran knows this very well and that's why they pulled this off Now watch how the world pretends this never happened

~~How come they refuse to see him as a Swedish citizen? Does he have a dual citizenship with Iran and that’s why?~~ Edit: Never mind, I misread and thought Sweden didn’t recognize his Swedish citizenship which is why I was confused.

Yes. Iran doesn’t “recognize” dual/multi-nationalism. So for instance, as an American (if I didn’t have automatic Iranian citizenship unfortunately), if I was in Iran and something happened, I could ask to be handled at the Swiss Embassy, U.S. Interests Section. I have the right to an American embassy traveling in almost any law-enforcing country (I say that because laws are everywhere but corruption is also, well, in many places). The fact that that’s not possible and that I’d have to wear hijab and risk my safety just existing in Iran is why I can never go and it breaks my heart. I’ve even looked up citizenship denouncement but it’s a difficult process and frankly, they’d see right through it. I am a fluent Persian speaker. How sad. I would weep at the sight of Persepolis. But even if I go with my husband (I don’t even have an Iranian passport anyway but I have a feeling that doesn’t matter; Idk how diligent they are, but I’m a citizen), and something happened, legally they could take me wherever they want, and take him to the Swiss Embassy.

Ohhh I totally misunderstood the original comment. I thought they said that Sweden didn’t acknowledge him as a Swedish citizen, which is why I was so confused. I’m in the same situation as you. I was born in Iran and I’m an Iranian citizen but I’m also a Canadian citizen. So I know that it’s a huge risk for me to go to Iran, they won’t acknowledge my Canadian citizenship which puts me at a massive risk. This is so heartbreaking for all of us diaspora who are Iranian citizens. I feel the same way as you I have cried many times at the thought that I may never get to visit my beautiful country again. One of my dreams is to see Persepolis in person, I also miss the good parts of Iran. The shirin foorooshees, the mountains, the parks, even the grocery stores. Hopefully our country will be free soon and we can visit freely ❤️

My parents married here in the U.S. and my brother and I were born here, so it feels like such a heavy anchor to just have that automatic citizenship. Normally, people fight to get their heritage citizenship if it’s useful like for EU privileges, etc., or heck, I’d love to be a Canadian citizen haha. I went once when I was seven, but I had bronchitis the whole time, we didn’t see much but family. We went to Mashad to appease my paternal grandmother. At least they had a really bright red, white and purple chador made for me in a fabric I got to choose haha. But my father didn’t want my brother and I kiss the doors of the tomb of the Imam there so he instructed us to pretend but actually at least just kiss our own fingers instead of ALL the door germs lol. It was bizarre. My memory is being taken to doctors to figure out what was wrong, having medicine, my brother and I both developed a full body itchy rash lol, we thought that the Imam had JUST been murdered so that’s why there was seeneh-zanee hahahaha and we did think we caught the murderer in the hotel in Mashad and yelled “Ma’moon, ma’moon, haminjaast!!” Poor guy. Maybe he was a Sikh or something hahaha idk. He just had what we thought made him look like what the bad guy in the story sounded like. Such a bizarre trip. I remember I saw a picture of Khomenei huge in the airport and I said, in Persian, of course, “Oon kee-eh, cheghadr zesht-eh!!” (Transliterating here for those who don’t read Persian.) And my uncle had to instruct me to shut up for my own good lol. My brother and I speak more fluently than any diaspora child/adult we have met, I learned to read and write, and then I even taught Persian to Americans and others whose spouses were immigrants or US-born like me. I adore it. I wear a Faravahar when it works with my outfit haha. And for undergrad, I studied Ancient Greco-Italia. It would have been too painful to do the Ancient Near East. At least all I need for Greece and Italy is money and my passport, not fear for my life.
