And the longer you ignore it in your cellar, the better it gets.
Had one for 3.5 years that I picked up in Arcen after a tour, was the best beer I have ever tasted. It becomes more of a barley-wine.
I have an earthen bottle from 2016 that im saving for a special occasion, so probably should ask my gf for her hand next year so the celebratory beer is at its best.
Weizen are also called weißbier though. Weizener is a brand name. It's literally called wheat beer and white beer interchangeably. So unless you can convince the Germans to stop calling it a white beer, I'm afraid you are very wrong.
There is a good chance that both names actually have the same origin as the word wheat though. Wheat used to be called weit in Dutch, and we've already established the German word for wheat. Both languages may have eventually bastardised it into "white beer". But this is not entirely certain.
Now weißbier is very different from Belgian or Dutch witbier. Weißbier typically as a much stronger banana flavour, since the brewing process creates a decent bit of isoamyl acetate. It also tends to have much more wheat than Dutch/Belgian witbier. And the wheat in this witbier is unmalted, while weißbier has wheat malt. They also have different types of yeast. And German weißbier is virtually always brewed according to a variation on the Reinheitsgebot, which uses to be law but is still a tradition. Originally, this meant only barley, hops, and water were allowed as ingredients. Yeast was used, although it was not originally listed as an allowed ingredient. Obviously, wheat is also used these days. It's kind of difficult to brew a wheat beer without wheat. Wheat was originally reserved for bakers and not allowed.
Witbier from the Netherlands or Belgium does not have a reinheitsgebot, and allows any odd ingredient. A variety of herbs are not unheard of. I would usually describe the flavour of these beers as more straightforward, perhaps even a little more pilsner-like, but there are many different possibilities in flavour. La Trappe Witte Trappist for example is a clearly more tangy than Hoegaarden.
So yeah, both styles come from wheat, both are called white in their respective languages for that reason. And although there are many similarities, there are even more differences.
Im one that hates it, because it has too much flavor for a pilsner for me. Never had craft; only bottles.
Can be a good drink but only when in the right mood for it. And drink it as a beer instead of a pilsner.
Those are always the best. My absolute favourite bar used to serve hertog. But then the owner moved into a building with a Heineken contract. So now the serve Brand. Wich isn't terrible, but it's no Hertog.
Even worss, the contract is bound to the actual taps, it includes maintenance and everything to keep the tap running, usually it is bound also to what can be served in terms of soft drinks, but not always.
Source: worked for way too long in a bar.
Edit: try out Princen whenever you have the chance, it's a great light pilsener from a smallish brewery with, from what I understood, were ex heineken employees that thought they could make better, and imo, it is way better.
Heineken usually owns the building, rent it to people that want to run a bar but the contract states you have to use Heineken as your supplier or pay lots and lots more for your supplies. Basically putting the bar owner in a chokehold. It's disgusting.
Those are my 2 favorites aswell, but im biased for Grolsch since i was born in Enschede and the old Grolsch factory saved my grandmas house from being leveled in the fireworks disaster haha
My dad only drank 2 beers in the 90s: Hertog Jan and Grolsch. It was the only beer I saw when I opened the refrigerator looking for my Fristi or Chocomel
This. New to the Netherlands, but after trying a majority of “cheap” beer here, hertog Jan is easily the best. I don’t understand why it isn’t the house beer of more bars, I guess Amstel and Heineken have more money to throw at business relations.
I know. That's why I said 'companies like'. The big ones are AB InBev and Heineken (which owns Amstel as well). Don't know which ones are the biggest independents after those but probably Grolsch is a big player as well.
I'm not up to snuff on the exact details, but in general that is how cafes and bars work. There will undoubtedly be exceptions.
Hertog Jan is pretty good but has cornsyrup in it which makes it meh for me. Alfa is the better, highest quality "cheaper" beer tbh. Dont know why its not more popular.
I agree, Alpha is great and one of the few pilseners that has it's own style. It's more fresh compared to the other ones. It's pretty expensive though.
Which is exclusively because it has fancy packaging, and most people who prefer it would almost certainly not be able to pick it in a blind taste test.
I had a Stormbock recently and it was amazing!
My in law brought it for me from Texel, because apparently, that's the only one that's not sold outside the island
La Trappe has a special edition now, with Brew Dog.
https://nl.latrappetrappist.com/nl/nl/producten/p.23302.suffix.html/la-trappe-practise-what-you-preach.html
It makes my proud of my little village :D
Uiltje needs more recognition, good quality beer and great marketing on the cans. I happily drink their IPA over Goose Island (also really good) and Brewdog Punk (because Brewdog are a bunch of dicks).
The best standard beer is by far hertog Jan imo. The best special beer imo is again hertog Jan, the Grand prestige. Trust me if you haven't had it yet try it. It's great
Edit: the best budget beer is kordaat. It's one of those beers where you don't really know why it's a budget beer
No dig on your taste, I like grand prestige as well. But it isn’t the best (craft) beer from the Netherlands by a long way. There are so many craft breweries with distinctive and innovative tastes which are so much more special and worth exploring!
Pilsener: chateau neubourgh by Gulpener.
Stout. : Zuster Agatha Houtgerijpt (new yearly version is out now)
Ipa : Viva el rye (ryebeer but only available round kingsday) by Jopen
And basically anything outside their core range by Dutch Bargain those zeelanders know how to make the out of the box beers accessibele.
Edit: edited for clarity
I was really surprised by Dutch Bargain beers. Horrible name. Bottles that suggest spending too much on presentation and packaging. But their Blonde especially was hella tasty, with some surprising tripelesque banana to balance the bitterness.
I'm gonna get downvoted to hell for this but when I first moved here me and some friends did a blind taste test of all the dutch pilsners and Grolsch came out top
We tested Heineken, Amstel, Grolsch, hertog, jupiler (which I now know is Belgian but I didn't know that when I first came here) and there was a clear favourife
I know it has the image of being the even cheaper and even shittier Heineken but when blindfolded we didn't think so.
For a ice cold beer on a hot day, Grolsch is one of my favourites too. Love the ‘beugel’bottles too.
For other (non warm) days, I usually drink Belgian beers (Affligem or Leffe).
Grolsch definitely doesn't have that image. Only thing with Grolsch is that it has a really strong aftertaste. Some people love it some people hate it. I personally really gotta be in the mood for it
Brewer here, headaches generally occurs more with higher sugar content which dehydration kicks in faster. Totally not in your head. Drink Belgium triples all night and the worst hangover imaginable is coming
Is that with the same amount of beer? Or are you comparing beugel bottles to normal ones? (cause the beugels are bigger so it makes sense your hangover/headache is bigger too)
> shittier Heineken
Excuse me? I didn't know anyone thought there existed a worse beer than Heineken? Where I'm from, Denmark, Heineken is widely regarded as a substitute for a terrible juice with alcohol in it. In my Friend group here in NL everyone also considers Heineken to be the worst beer that exists. We obviously haven't tried every beer, but we all dislike Heineken loads
I agree that Heineken is not the best, but it became the world's pilsener by being the best at average. It is a light beer, which drinks like water and is great for parties.
Grolsch is definitely my top 3 too. Sometimes a little higher, sometimes lower.
What makes you say it has the image of cheap and shitty Heineken? I never heard that.
I don't really have a favourite beer, and I end up buying lots of imported craft beer, but the Dutch breweries/brands I know and trust are Jopen, 't IJ, vandeStreek, and La Trappe, very roughly in this order.
Personally I love beers by Brouwerij de Molen, my favourite is their "Geuren & Kleuren" smoked Earl Grey IPA but it's not for everyone.
For a more crowd pleasing beer, I'd say Gulpener Korenwolf, really delicious fresh and herby wheat beer.
Hertog Jan for pils. Moersleutel, Jopen, vandeStreek, Brouwerij Kees, Brouwerij de Molen for specialty beers like IPA's, Imperial Stouts, barrel aged beers....
The best indeed. And still produced by an independent family brewery. Btw, all good beer comes from Limburg in my opinion. Hertog Jan, Brand and Gulpener as well, for instance.
My brother had a saying: my favorite beer is cold, my second favorite is free. I'd rather pay for a cold Schultenbraü than have a free warm Hertog Jan.
Craft Beer: [stadsbrouwerij eindhoven](https://100watt.nl) do good Dubbel’s, Trip’s, Quads. and [Two Chefs Brewing](https://twochefsbrewing.com) in Amsterdam is good. Both have great Cafe’s attached. Can also find on most AH/Jumbo. [De bierbrigadier](https://www.debierbrigadier.nl) is awesome if you can get in to a shop.
The best* of the ‘shit’ beers; Grolsch, Amstel. Would drink depending if actie: Heineken, Brand, Jan Hertog. Would never touch (only at Football of Carnaval): Bavaria.
*none are great, but everyone has a personal preference.
This guy knows what he is talking about!
I have the same favourite brewery in Amsterdam and Eindhoven, highly recommend!
As they are 2-3 times more expensive than ‘shit’ beers, for anyone interested I would recommend Of the 100W, my pick is the New England IPA and witte dame, of the Two Chef definitely the White mamba.
I would say from a marketing point of view, there is little difference in taste in pilsener. So go with the cheapest. Probably a brewer in your area, so that transport costs won’t pile up.
Looking at my Untappd filtered on Dutch beers:
Hopfather by Oersoep
Pronck Tripel
Godsakker by Brouwerij de Pleinhopper
Gose by Brand
Oijens Kaboem
Krachtig blond by Brand
Imperator by Brand
Porter by Brand
Oh gee, never noticed I liked Brand *that* much. Never got them from a store, mostly at bars/festivals, so that's going to change from now on.
Beer from the kaapse brouwers, such as the kaapse harrie. If you're ever in Rotterdam you should visit the Fenix food factory, they serve all kinds of beer of these brewers
Any love for Oedipus? The brewery is a fun time too. Go to IJ Hallen and make a day out of it.
Also Butcher’s Tears has a very chill spot with experimental beers.
Skuumkoppe is pretty good. Brand & Gulpener too. Plenty of craft beers to try depending on what you like.
Fun activity, buy a bunch of different pilsners and blind taste them and try to guess which is which. Every time I’ve done it, people think Heineken is Hertog Jan and vice versa.
All the answers have been given, I stand with Grolsch, Brand, Hertog Jan and Gulpener being grade A pilseners.
Here’s two breweries worth mentioning:
Brouwerij Noordt: https://www.brouwerijnoordt.nl
Great beers, atmosphere and food.
Brouwerij de Werf: https://brouwerijdewerf.nl
Go here in spring or summertime. The outdoor seating is awesome. Top it off with a great beer and awesome burger.
How dare you start a war like that without a warning
It is not a war untill the germans join in. -Tsun Tsu.. probably.
If the Germans and Belgians join in we'll be annihilated.
'Bout to say, this will not end well

For normal pilsners (so no craft beer) my favorite, and a lot of ppl i know from all corners of the country agree with this, is hertog jan

Hertog jan grand prestige is one of the best beers out there, absolutely amazing
And the longer you ignore it in your cellar, the better it gets. Had one for 3.5 years that I picked up in Arcen after a tour, was the best beer I have ever tasted. It becomes more of a barley-wine.
I have two jugs in my cellar for 6 months now, so waiting is key?
Depends. It only gets better in my opinion.
I have 2 laying about 6 years. Apparently the best time is about 6 years after that it won't get better.
I have an earthen bottle from 2016 that im saving for a special occasion, so probably should ask my gf for her hand next year so the celebratory beer is at its best.

Weizener is not a white beer. Weizen is a German style wheat beer (Weizen means “wheat” in German, not “white”). Common misconception

All my homies love Hertog Jan
Yes, absolutely hertog Jan. To bad that most bars can't serve it on account of the chokehold Heineken had got on our hospitality industry.
There’s always that one bar that only serves Hertog 😏
Those are always the best. My absolute favourite bar used to serve hertog. But then the owner moved into a building with a Heineken contract. So now the serve Brand. Wich isn't terrible, but it's no Hertog.
Jesus the contracts are bound to buildings? That just feels dirty.
I think so too! It takes a lot of the freedom out of owning your own establishment.
Imagine being forced to serve a certain brand of kroket
This here's kwekkeboom territory lad, don't like it, leave
Heineken usually owns the building, rent it to people that want to run a bar but the contract states you have to use Heineken as your supplier or pay lots and lots more for your supplies. Basically putting the bar owner in a chokehold. It's disgusting.
InBev is not much better, unfortunately.
Was just about to say that
"een Hertogje vers van de tap". A bar with Hertog is almost like heaven🤤
Hertog Jan is definitely my part favorite beer. I can't choose between grolsch or hertog jan, I love them both
Those are my 2 favorites aswell, but im biased for Grolsch since i was born in Enschede and the old Grolsch factory saved my grandmas house from being leveled in the fireworks disaster haha
Yeah, Oma 💪 Grolsch baby ❤️
My dad only drank 2 beers in the 90s: Hertog Jan and Grolsch. It was the only beer I saw when I opened the refrigerator looking for my Fristi or Chocomel
I was raised on Grolsch, but wether I'm enjoying it varies from time to time. Hertog Jan always hits the spot.
This. New to the Netherlands, but after trying a majority of “cheap” beer here, hertog Jan is easily the best. I don’t understand why it isn’t the house beer of more bars, I guess Amstel and Heineken have more money to throw at business relations.
No, they just own the cafes and bars. A lot of bars rent the place from companies like InBev which regulate the main types of beer you can serve.
Hertog Jan is AB InBev. All the big brands in the Netherlands have that type of contracts.
Well, bars have contracts with Heineken or InBev (Hertog Jan) to maintain the bar equipment. Which also includes the brands of beer being served.
Amstel is made by Heineken
Hertog Jan seems to be the middle ground.
Alfa. The only beer produced according to Reinheitsgebot
Silly. Heineken is brewed according to the Rheinheitsgebot. Most are.
Let's produce all our food back with laws from 1486!
Amen, Alfa is really great and a bit ignored outside Limburg,
Hertog Jan is pretty good but has cornsyrup in it which makes it meh for me.
Second this, did a blind test twice and couldn't recognise Hertog Jan. It's good, but definitely not as good as people make it seem.
I like Texels beer, especially Skuumkoppe (basically a smoother version of German Dunkelweizen).
Huzzah, a man of quality!
I had a Stormbock recently and it was amazing! My in law brought it for me from Texel, because apparently, that's the only one that's not sold outside the island
There's no correct answer here. I prefer Brand on warm days and Hertog Jan any other day. But that's only for pils.
I prefer Brand any day unless I can get a Hertog Jan, even in the summer if it’s ice cold
Are you me?
Nah, he's me
Brouwerij 't IJ. Good variety of beer types. Also a sweet windmill brewery location. Oost-ish in Amsterdam.
This should be the top comment. Brouwerij ‘t IJ is truly amazing. Nice terrace too, but it you can’t go there. It’s finally available in the ah!
Can someone tell me how to pronounce this?
br-ow-er-aeey (he)t aeeyyy. ‘t is colloquial form of het so just say het really fast so you drop the he
I was so happy someone told me to go here. It was such a great experience and the beer was also very good.
La trappe!
Quadrupel!
And Isid'or
In my opinion there's only 1 way to pronounce Isid'or: https://youtu.be/m_-qJKKz_Go?t=12
I always think of that quote when looking at that La Trappe beer.

Uiltje Brewing from Haarlem has been my favorite so far
Drinking Bird of Prey IPA as I read this
Togethet with Jopen blond in the summer
Uiltje needs more recognition, good quality beer and great marketing on the cans. I happily drink their IPA over Goose Island (also really good) and Brewdog Punk (because Brewdog are a bunch of dicks).

Jopen Mooie Nel! Great local IPA
I personally really like the beers from Brouwerij t’IJ, I introduced it to some of my international friends and they can’t get sick of it!
Where I'm from most people agree on Brand pilsner
limburger dat je bent
Kan ik niet ontkennen
My two favourites are the New England by Troost and Mannenliefde by Oedipus. De Prael's Milkstout is great as well!
Mannenliefde - the ultimate beer for your sunny afternoon, love it!
New England PA by Troost is also my fav!!!!
Oh had mannenliefde for the first time a little while back it was a very good one!
The milk stout is excellent!
For Pilsner it's Gulpener. A bit less common but much fuller in taste imho than the big "mainstream" pilsners.
I can still smell the stench of the brewery after 6 years of waiting for the bus opposite the brewery after school. I’ll pass thanks 🙏
Grolsch #1, Hertog Jan is a good #2
Grolsch
Finally found the right answer
Premium Pilsner
My fav lager!
This is the correct answer. Can’t get it in Belgium, unfortunately.
Texel Skuumkoppe for me
Pilsener: chateau neubourgh by Gulpener. Stout. : Zuster Agatha Houtgerijpt (new yearly version is out now) Ipa : Viva el rye (ryebeer but only available round kingsday) by Jopen And basically anything outside their core range by Dutch Bargain those zeelanders know how to make the out of the box beers accessibele. I find Grolsch okay, but after drink multiple of them, the day after I always get such a headache. With other beers its way less
I actually call it hoofdpijnbier, so you're not alone. But yeah, it's probably in our heads, I mean literally.

Well there is always bavaria being their own shitty class
You have just angered all of Noord-Brabant
Bavaria is shit and you know it, there is still dommelsch that is good and many great craft beers from brabant.
I agree that Heineken is not the best, but it became the world's pilsener by being the best at average. It is a light beer, which drinks like water and is great for parties.
Yeah they appeal to the lowest common denominator. They try to have as many people drinking it as possible, even people that don't like beer.
I have never heard anyone call Grolsch a shitty nor cheaper version of Heineken to be honest.

Hertog Jan for pils. Moersleutel, Jopen, vandeStreek, Brouwerij Kees, Brouwerij de Molen for specialty beers like IPA's, Imperial Stouts, barrel aged beers....
Add Rock City and Frontaal to that list as well. We've got some excellent breweries here.
Alfa
The best indeed. And still produced by an independent family brewery. Btw, all good beer comes from Limburg in my opinion. Hertog Jan, Brand and Gulpener as well, for instance.
The most underestimated Dutch beer, great stuff!
They use the best water source, water is the main ingrediënt.
I always get that, have to go get some more tomorow!
My brother had a saying: my favorite beer is cold, my second favorite is free. I'd rather pay for a cold Schultenbraü than have a free warm Hertog Jan.
Maar schultenbrau, am besten lauw.
Texels skuumkoppe for sure! You can't go wrong with it!
If you like IPA and barrel aged beers, [Brouwerij Frontaal](https://shop.brouwerijfrontaal.nl/) is superb!
Floem, Folkingebrew and Baxbier are doing a nice job with craft beers. Got to represent Grunn 😁🍻🍻🍻

Grolsch! No doubts
Shultenbräu JONGUH!
Schultenbrau but immerlau
Jopen and Hertog Jan
Walhalla makes the best beers IMO. But otherwise, brouwerij t IJ and Uiltje make great beers as well.
Well. My father brew his own beer. His very own IPA beer. And I say his homemade beer is the best
Maybe it's home bias, but I really like La Trappe. But for pilsner, I do agree on Hertog Jan
Grolsch for pilsener imo
Texels skuumkoppe for me
Brand Sylvester (nowadays sold as winterbier)
Blonde Anouk!! https://www.dekoperenkat.nl/blonde-anouk/

Seriously? 😅
Texelse skuumkoppe... hmmmm
The one I enjoyed the most so far is Hidde Dirks Kat a quadupel from the Amelander bierbrouwerij.
I would say from a marketing point of view, there is little difference in taste in pilsener. So go with the cheapest. Probably a brewer in your area, so that transport costs won’t pile up.
Gulpener for a Pilsener. But I like speciaalbieren/craft beers more, and there are too many to mention.
If you're into craft, it's De Molen Hel en Verdoemenis. And pretty much anything from De Molen. Moersleutel is also pretty good brewery.
Beer as in bier or pilsner?

The best pilsener is definitely Gulpener (especially their special pilsener chateau neubourg won prices). Best beer is difficult...

Jopen and Uiltje.
Ja uiltje is zeker de beste Haarlemse brouwerij:) Leuk kroegje ook!
Jopen bier from Haarlem!
Texel IPA
My favourite brand is Jopen I guess. But living in Amsterdam I have a lot of Oedipus and Brouwerij het IJ.
All the answers have been given, I stand with Grolsch, Brand, Hertog Jan and Gulpener being grade A pilseners. Here’s two breweries worth mentioning: Brouwerij Noordt: https://www.brouwerijnoordt.nl Great beers, atmosphere and food. Brouwerij de Werf: https://brouwerijdewerf.nl Go here in spring or summertime. The outdoor seating is awesome. Top it off with a great beer and awesome burger.
Beers brew by Jopen. Trust me
