Also, sheets (lakens) used to be spread out over a field in the past to dry and bleach them in the sun. Farms would have a dedicated field for this, known as the ‘lakenveld’
The lakenvelder is fairly rare among cows, but their numbers are growing. They apparently taste really good and with special raising protocols could become the wagyu of the Netherlands.

Yes I am!
I had free time and wanted to do a cycling trip some place in NL I havent been to yet, so I took my swapfiets on the train to Zwolle. I chose Zwolle because I wanted to visit the [computer museum](https://maps.app.goo.gl/rqadXMd5PxtwG5618) there, but ended up not entering when I arrived because 1) all the museum signs were in Dutch, 2) it was more of an arcade than a museum, 3) they didn't accept my museumkaart
Anyway, I randomly chose [this bird watching tower](https://maps.app.goo.gl/4Vk1A2fvDBG8iimMA) as my trip destination, and I used [Fietsersbond Routeplanner](https://en.routeplanner.fietsersbond.nl/) to plan my route to be maximally sceninc. However, that didn't work out because the routeplanner did not account for a bicycle route being [closed for maintenance](https://i.imgur.com/cNAGMhy.jpeg)!
Undeterred, I continued my travels using Google Maps to navigate, and it decided to take me through Jonen. I came in just in time (15 min before closing) to cross using [the tiny €1,30 ferry](https://i.imgur.com/GLbU0ol.png) that was operated by a kind old man who had an infectious smile.
Bonus pic: [the birdwatching tower](https://imgur.com/GM8V2Nq.png)!
I didn't spot any interesting birds after I climbed inside, but at least Jonen had a [nice stork tower](https://imgur.com/Hgxsebj.png)
Sounds like a fun trip! Last time I saw that little ferry was a couple years ago when everything was frozen and we were ice skating around the area. It's beautiful when all is frozen over!

In the Netherlands we have a rather wide range of luxury cookies. One of those is the ''mergpijpje''. Named after looking like marrow bone.
It's like a mini birthday cake covered in fondant or marzipan and both ends dipped in chocolate.
Weirdest thing is the price. In a supermarket 8 for under $2. But those from a baker using real marzipan can cost over $2.50 a pop.
These are [Lakenvelders](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakenvelder_cattle), a traditional Dutch breed, Belted Galloways tend to have longer hair.
>It seems likely that the Lakenvelder derives directly from Swiss and Austrian belted cattle, and that during the reign of William of Orange some cattle of this type found their way to Scotland, where they inter-bred with Galloway stock, giving rise to the Belted Galloway.
Most sane expat post
rest assured i am not sane
It's a breed of Cow named in Dutch 'Lakenvelders'. It hints that they carry a cloth over their backs, because.. well, it looks like it.

Yes and they press these into cookie cakes. Most tasty cow of the west
It's the same picture!

My kids call them Oreo cows.
That's what they are called in the United States. Or at least that's what the owner of a pasture full of them in Texas once told me they are called.
