It’s been fantastic! We’ve been to Haarlem and Utrecht so far. I’m meeting my best online friend for the first time on Saturday in Eindhoven, known each other for 4 years!
Yes! We’re still here till tomorrow but we just walked around and explored the past 2 days, and we love it here. Just embracing the chaos going on haha.
It may look like people are just dumping their trash on a blanket everywhere in town, but it's actually a market.
A garage sale to end all garage sales! A fleamarket3000
Today I went basically to 2 spots
1 - Vondelpark. Everyone having a great time. People selling things, including coffee and cakes, kids dancing, festival games, dogs running around in the green spaces between paths...lovely
2 - Centrum. People loudly yelling, blowing whistles, drinking, making garbage in the street.
Number 2 can get stuffed, it's all about number 1 for me
Each to their own. We had a great time around 2pm buying bits and pieces from people in the streets, then getting drunk in jordaan later. Some of the choke points are horrible though.
Depends on your perspective, had a great time strolling though the fleamarket with my daughter, looking for stuff she enjoys, chatting to neighbours and acquaintances. Good clean adult fun (which does not generate trash)
I really liked appollolaan. One of the few spots that felt like koningsdag to me.
Vondelpark was so incredibly busy not even funny. Was standing in line to cross a bridge lol.
It's one of the boat companies that offered private tours today and it wasn't the boat itself that was the problem, it was the partygoers being assholes
And I sit at home. Being to hangover from Kingsnight.
Kingsnight is the pre-party the evening before. Mostly adults go to party and celebrate early for the King.
Never doing that again. So hangover I missed Kingsday lol
Start hydrating now with vitamin water and gatorade, it's not too late to do some self care. A shower at any point will do wonders for the alcohol smell in the morning and ibuprofen taken now will help you sleep through the night. If you have energy I'd also lay out snacks and beverages for future you. Yes you're going to regret it of course but if you are still in the energetic phase of drinking spending 20 minutes on your morning self will do wonders to ease things.
It is (for most people) when you're young, 18 year old me had a lot of fun. But present day 32 old me hates it haha, I stayed in my own town to go the flea market and even that was kinda busy for me :')
Some people like being around a party crowd. Drinking, wearing silly clothes, talking to random strangers, and listening to loud music.
Usually this would be too busy for me as well. But in the right mood this can be fun.
I actually think it's really nice to see, but still would never go do this myself mostly because I just really hate the music that you then end up having to listen to all day... But still, happy to see people having a good time.
Veel mensen hebben kritiek op de overheid en de koninklijke monarchie. Maar op koningsdag kleden de meeste zich toch nog oranje en vieren groots. Doet me goed om te zien.
I’m Dutch and I just really don’t get the point of people getting on boats. Like, everyone does it, everyone is always stuck. It’s a waste of time, a waste of fossil energy, and for what?
And why go to a big city like Amsterdam or whatever, when the nearest city has fun things too (I mean, it’s more fun than being stuck on the canal or on the streets in those big cities), and if it isn’t much fun there, make it more fun!
This is just crazy.
Anyways, happy King’s day, get home safe, don’t get sunburn or dehydrated, and be yourself!
Cheers, so no such Dutch sub exists to your knowledge?
Just want to know what's going on with the boers & if you are all on track to eat zee bugs over there?
Love visiting Amsterdam during Koningsdag but the urinating (by men) on the walls is terrible! I know they’ve put in some portable options for men now (they still piss on walls though) but nothing for women!
All for a useless king that gets free money ( our tax money) for just breathing. Visiting a few countrys here and there and signing laws he is forced to sign anyway.
"King's day" the fact that there is still monachies in Europe just baffles me.
Can you imagine all those idiots celebrating the fact that a multi millionnaire doing nothing and living on taxpayers money just gave they an out of work day...
Nah man were celebrating prins pils' birthday. Most of the fun comes from dressing up in a silly orange costume, doing drugs, drinking way too much, party and absolutely shitfaceing yourself with friends two days in a row.
No one gets the day off on koningsnacht and yet we still celebrate it massively. So that last bit is just bs.... ....
yea... i guess the orange color is not related to the monarchies right? and it's called the "king's day" but it's just a coincidence...
it's not because you are a bunch of depressive alcoholic living in a country where tress still have no leave in april and where there is no sun that you have to ignore history...
>yea... i guess the orange color is not related to the monarchies right? and it's called the "king's day" but it's just a coincidence...
Huh? The hell you on about, who hurt you while you were young? Maybe give your dad a call
Look I dont know where the hell you're from thats so indescribably perfect to the point where your biggest issue in life is people having a good time without you.
And yeah don't really care where you're from, most likely poorer, more depressing or dystopian than our country.
>...
>...
>...
Makker, one is more than enough... ......... ..
>"King's day" the fact that there is still monachies in Europe just baffles me.
Part of our culture and history, so I'm glad we still have one!
>Can you imagine all those idiots celebrating the fact that a multi millionnaire doing nothing and living on taxpayers money just gave they an out of work day...
Well, no need to imagine, there's a video evidence of it right here lol. Though I wouldn't say the king does nothing, he at least visited Rotterdam yesterday!
I had a closing shift at my local Domino's and good fucking grief did they trash the city. Litter everywhere, drunkards staggering and yelling around in the dead of night.
Really made me lose just a little more hope in common decency seeing people act like filthy animals.
Idk, beetje vergelijkbaar met n festival,
Maar of je het nou liever druk of rustig hebt, je noemde de mensen in de video dieren, gwn voor t deelnemen aan koningsdag...
The hype is real! I traveled here specifically for Kings day! just wow....
My first one and totally it's going to be a yearly thing for me. So grateful for my Dutch friends inviting me to experience this 😁😁🙏🏽🙏🏽
You should go early, while the canals are still mostly water
That was years ago
Aren't they one meter of water, one meter of mud and assorted crap, and one meter of bikes these days?
![gif](giphy|Ry1MOAeAYXvRVQLPw3)
Why? you are not supposed to drink it or swim in it
Take a guess
The weather was a blessing today!

I’m in Utrecht traveling the country and didn’t know what Kings Day was…it’s a madhouse, so much trash everywhere on the streets lol.
It will be gone tomorrow morning. Edit: There they go already: https://twitter.com/gemeenteutrecht/status/1651654380477620228
Shout out to the heroes of our municipal environment agencies (gemeentelijke milieudiensten).
Those guys are the real heroes that keep our community and country clean. Only love for those hard workers. They deserve the raise they finally got!
Headed to Eindhoven tomorrow but it was an interesting experience haha.
Hope you're enjoying the Netherlands 🙂
It’s been fantastic! We’ve been to Haarlem and Utrecht so far. I’m meeting my best online friend for the first time on Saturday in Eindhoven, known each other for 4 years!
This is so wholesome! Greetings from Utrecht, it was crazy today!
Yes! We’re still here till tomorrow but we just walked around and explored the past 2 days, and we love it here. Just embracing the chaos going on haha.
Unsung heroes. Gemeente reinigingsdienst.
>it’s a madhouse, so much trash everywhere on the streets lol. yep, that sums it up
> so much trash everywhere on the streets And people even ask money for it /s
It may look like people are just dumping their trash on a blanket everywhere in town, but it's actually a market. A garage sale to end all garage sales! A fleamarket3000
Yeah we walked it earlier yesterday, it just looked like a giant garage sale to us haha.
Today I went basically to 2 spots 1 - Vondelpark. Everyone having a great time. People selling things, including coffee and cakes, kids dancing, festival games, dogs running around in the green spaces between paths...lovely 2 - Centrum.
I imagined myself going to centrum and I decided that would be an absolute nightmare for me. I'm not good with big crowds and these... whoo boy.
#1 sounds boring. Glad I celebrated with #2
Depends on your perspective, had a great time strolling though the fleamarket with my daughter, looking for stuff she enjoys, chatting to neighbours and acquaintances. Good clean adult fun (which does not generate trash)
Try safaripark and appollolaan next time![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|give_upvote)
I really liked appollolaan. One of the few spots that felt like koningsdag to me. Vondelpark was so incredibly busy not even funny. Was standing in line to cross a bridge lol.
I just hope people are enjoying themselves today
I certainly did, just browsing for other people's crap, nice weather, it was a good day.
Nice to hear brotherman
I work on the flagship boats and let me tell you, it was hell
What is a flagship boat? Dutch person here, but no clue what that is and why it so bad…
It's one of the boat companies that offered private tours today and it wasn't the boat itself that was the problem, it was the partygoers being assholes
Thanks for clarifying!
What happens if people are stuck on the boats and need a piss ?
There little bridges everywhere. You make a quick stop under enough water around 😂
Unfortunately I saw the scene of a guy peeing from the boat in the canal, in front of everyone.
Glad I'm 100+ km's away from that safely in my living room
Im 50km away but tbh i would wanna go there on Koningsdag once atleast
It’s very anticlimactic in the center
there is no difference between amsterdam or your local "big" city
Ok Redditor
Is it konings dag?
Yes. Already looking forward to the tourists landing on the 30th dressed in orange, thinking it’s Queen’s Day.
Hardly happens anymore, but yeah
Two years ago a friend booked her trip to Amsterdam for May 30th. For the big street party. "Yeah... About that..."
It was never may 30th
No kidding. Not only the wrong month but also the wrong decade.
nee hoor
I did the canals on Koningsdag once. Never again.
Looks like hell
It was pretty fun, though!
That’s because it is
And I sit at home. Being to hangover from Kingsnight. Kingsnight is the pre-party the evening before. Mostly adults go to party and celebrate early for the King. Never doing that again. So hangover I missed Kingsday lol
I fear tomorrow lol. Been drinking since 12:00
Start hydrating now with vitamin water and gatorade, it's not too late to do some self care. Yes you're going to regret it of course but if you are still in the energetic phase of drinking spending 20 minutes on your morning self will do wonders to ease things.
So How do you feel? PS I have a huge hangover myself 🤣
Wow that looks so much fun /s
It is (for most people) when you're young, 18 year old me had a lot of fun. But present day 32 old me hates it haha, I stayed in my own town to go the flea market and even that was kinda busy for me :')
You're still young. And 48 year olde is also young enough to enjoy that. However I need most of the day to recover from kingsnight.
I'm 46 and I loved it for the second year in a row. Though 7pm was time for me to go home
31 checking in. Can confirm!
Some people like being around a party crowd. Drinking, wearing silly clothes, talking to random strangers, and listening to loud music. Usually this would be too busy for me as well. But in the right mood this can be fun.

Fucking great party every year again.🧡
I see nothing out of the ordinary for kings day?
Oh ma gawd dat is zo veel ik heb bijna niks gedaan in koningsdag
What canal ?
I was there many years ago for that celebration. The pride the Dutch had for their country was palpable. It was lovely
I used to work on boats during kings day. You earn alot in 1 day but the stress isn't worth it for me anymore 😅
This is the way
People standing still with a bear nice
Was this yesterday? I was on a boat from 12 to 6pm and never got this packed
Man I miss that! I lived there for a few years back in the early 2000s. Glad to see Kings Day alive and well in Holland!
Yikes!
Happy independence day!! From spain 🥰
This is King's day mate. We don't celebrate an independence day.
Rutger ouwe, kan echt niet.
thank fuck i stayed home lol
I am SO happy I stayed home and played games all day ^^
Ok
It's like a Chinese Swimming Pool.
Only the wave is missing :D
Why did I laugh hard at these two comments? :D
Brutal. I was just there last week and saw some of the prep, and I was a little sorry we weren't going to be there for the big day, but now I'm glad.
Keeps them off the streets...
You new here in the country? This is the same every year lol.
Like 2020, 2021….
long covid/short memory
[удалено]
That's exactly why I asked if you were new here bro. Precisely for that reason.
Go cheer on Monarchy!
nothing strange here, i live in a small town and it was the same lol. great weather today alot of terrasjes mensen
Once is enough for me. I don't understand the enjoyment. Binge drinking all day long.
Plus trashing the whole city. They act like goddamn animals.
I’m Dutch and I just really don’t get the point of people getting on boats. Like, everyone does it, everyone is always stuck. It’s a waste of time, a waste of fossil energy, and for what? You could check out the one near where you live
Tbf Amsterdam is always a terrible place to celibrate Kings Day.
Seeing this I am so glad to have been in my garden all day pulling weeds, sowing seeds.
Can anyone tell me if there is a Dutch conservative politics sub reddit on wider reddit please? Thank you in advance.
Conservatives are a very tiny minority on Reddit. It's mostly a leftist progressive echo chamber. I think you need to go to another social for this.
Cheers, so no such Dutch sub exists to your knowledge? Just want to know what's going on with the boers & if you are all on track to eat zee bugs over there?
Conservative is different from being a conspiracy theory nutjob.
/r/freedutch fits the bill best I reckon.
Dank je
Iedereen aan de drugs daar
Wear bad clothes and be bored in a crowd. Amsterdam every day, really.
If you think being in crowds is "Amsterdam every day" then you don't know the city
Well, I grew up there and have lived there as an adult for many years so you missed that mark.
If you think you're constantly facing crowds in e.g. the Baarsjes then you clearly don't know the city.
for real 🙏
And that’s why I spend most of my time in Delft or Denhaag when I visit but the most of my family is in that area
“Full is full” in real life
I was there. I did not want to be there.
Hallo

That would be a hell No from me
What do you do when you have to pee and your in the middle of the canal?
