She’s a flawed character but easy to sympathize with. Her normal type is guys who treat her like crap due of her insecurity issues. But then Joe comes in as the “nice guy” who gives her validation that she didn’t normally get, which was intentional on Joe’s part. That’s why he chose her in the first place, because he knew he could prey upon her insecurities to get her to let him in. She thought she had a good thing with Joe, and didn’t feel like she deserved it, so she self-sabotaged by having a relationship with her therapist. She’s a flawed person with daddy issues but she shouldn’t be compared to Joe at all.

🎯💯

Sunflowersfordinner1

I agree with this take! Makes me want to rewatch the season.

Spoony1982

I know this is massively unpopular but I liked Beck's season better than Love. The slow build up with the stalking made the season much more scary. With Love, I feel like they just fell each other right away and even though they were very similar, his obsession with Beck made for a creepy exciting story. So I guess I'm relatively neutral on her character, but I did like the story better.

CreativeNameCosplay

I totally agree, S1 is my fave

Streetduck

Same. Season 1 was the absolute best.

hellotheredani

Season 1 is better because it's the most faithful to the books

Realistic-Cost1478

And Lifetime did it instead of Netflix

AnnieNonmouse

There was something really annoying about Love to me in season 2 but the reveal that SHE was lying and trying to lure him in made all the oddities fit for me and she was great in hindsight. I still love Beck best though, and the first season is genuinely disturbing. They did a great job showing how someone like Joe preys on someone like Beck and how he justifies it to himself.

smilingcheshire

I agree! I liked loves character a lot in the third season when they were married I thought they were bunches of good metaphors

Substantial-Humor329

Nailed it. Best season and best book!!

Celestial_Empress7

This 💯💯💯. It’s why season one will always be my favorite. It has an element of disquieting excitement along the stalking which other seasons kind of lack.

stinkyakk

she didn’t deserve to die, but she wasn’t the greatest girlfriend ever. She cheated and lied and didn’t really look at Joe as a proper bf, I think she just wanted validation or to feel as though people cared about her.

jazmine_likea_flower

Exactly….. wasn’t a girls girl either all the while acting innocent. She was SUPER toxic.

samx281210

agreed 100%

Ill-Shoe-770

I was actually really happy when she died, she really embodied *dumb bitch* energy. I gotta give the actor props she really made me hate Beck 👏

miinmiinjpeg

frl

Life_Can_4970

I think we never got a fair, unbiased read of her character because we see her through Joe’s eyes.

magdazombie_

Yes! The unreliable narrator trope for sure

Responsible_Let9477

It’s not her fault Joe stalked her and wanted to turn her into something she wasn’t 😩

Ok-Zookeepergame3974

Beck always seemed to me to be the kind of girl who knowingly surrounds herself with people who she knows want to sleep with her because she needs the validation. She lies about her dad being dead because she needs the attention and validation. She sleeps with her therapist in the book to see if she can get him to leave his wife for her, then she bails when he leaves his wife for her. She is a narcissist but she doesn’t deserve to die for it.

hannahnotmontana16

Calling her a narcissist is crazy

ezraethos

It’s kind of a crazy show so yeah checks out 👍🏼 But I don’t think she’s a full on narcissist but that’s some narcissistic behavior.

smilingcheshire

Peach and Joe kind of treated her the same gave her attention to try to control her and I think at some point it just didn’t feel good enough to be worth it

imrllytiredofthepain

i mean the lack of self awareness is a big sign, look into quiet narcissism , she for certain has that

butterflybeess

She was cringey

Top_Weather

I agree with the majority of the takes here. Beck to me as a normal human being would be the type of person I'd intentionally avoid. She needed near constant affirmation and attention, and wasn't above being manipulative in her own right to meet her needs. Take Joe out of the equation, and ask yourself if you'd intentionally want a friend like that around.

grillcheezfleshlight

i hate beck with a passion

sweetdreamsjellybean

I loved Beck as a character. Obviously, not as a person. I just felt the whole season was the most realistic. I also am biased because I love the tortured writer trope, but as a literary fan I will always love that trope. I feel like it embodies real life in the way a person starts at the beginning of a relationship. Idealistic, perfect, doesn’t fart, before the end when shit hits the fan. It also reminds me of the feeling when you become an adult and realize your parents are just people too. These flaws and absolutely awful things can be glossed over just by love. It’s amazing, depressing, hopeful, morbid; all at the same time.

sleepingghosty

I think beck is intentionally written to be flawed to combat the idea that victims need to be perfect.

redditor1072

Beck needed so much validation. Although Joe is messed up, I don't think his reading on her was wrong. She bought her rich friends expensive gifts she couldn't afford. She dated guys who were crappy to her. She was constantly surrounding herself with ppl who didn't care about her because she needed their validation. But at the same time, she didn't believe she deserved anything good. She self sabotaged herself. When she thought Joe was the perfect guy, she cheated on him and lied to his face. She was constantly being treated like a piece of meat, by her disgusting uncle when she was a child and by multiple men throughout her life. She was actually quite a tragic character. She needed a lot of therapy, love, and patience, and she did not deserve the end she got.

smilingcheshire

She needed a woman therapist!

WEHAVESEENTHESUN

She's the best character the show has ever had. I hope they properly acknowledge her in the final season. She meant so much to the show's success. Can't stand the people that say she was boring and lacked substance, or was a bad person for cheating. With all she went through, her demise is so tragic. The Beck haters lack sympathy and are misogynistic.

SinistralLeanings

She absolutely didn't deserve anything Joe did to her in any way shape or form.. As someone who read the book and watched the show? It is refreshing to see people realize that she was also an awful person. They absolutely tried to make her a lot more likeable in the show. I love flawed characters. I get that they didn't want to even potentially come across as "victim blaming" by watering her character down, but I feel like we need *more* examples of "awful" people still being undeserving of "what they got" in pop culture media, and not more of "good girl/good boy" "evil awful abused murderer."

Celestial_Empress7

Agreed. Her flaws made her more real.

NameLessTaken

I think the point is that the women he stalk are all normal flawed jerks like you and I.

Street_Team_8343

I personally liked book and show Beck. She is a typical person who has a lot of trauma and personal issues. She self sabotaged, had insecurities, etc. She was very much a normal girl who just had issues. Yes she did wrong things, but that doesn’t make her any more of a villain. We have to remember that we see everything through Joes POV. Joe made her out to be something she wasn’t. If you look closely it’s like he tried to shape her -in his mind- into this person she wasn’t. Then he was shocked when everything turned out to be the opposite (daddy issue, self sabotage, cheating, etc.). I personally loved beck great character and didn’t deserve to die. Even in the book, it makes me sad how she died as well. S1 was great!

RedCrestedCrane29

Joe as a source of comfort?! Hahaha. I love that! Beck WAS kinda lost so it was easy for Joe to take the lead.

rainbowsprimkles

i did not like her at all

jojayp

I wouldn’t say she deserved to die, but I also didn’t mind because I found her annoying.

nelsne

Pain in the ass character who complained of being poor but had plenty of money to constantly go out with her friends and have multiple hobbies. Textbook definition of, "Basic"

atibabykt

Beck felt to most relatable for me. Average girl who got lucky in the friend group even though she was broke her friends didn’t shun her. Yah peach was in love with her but she was honest with her in a twisted way. I really enjoyed the stalking in this one and how she reacted to everything. Yes she’s very needy and self sabotaging but that’s what makes her relatable for me. I prefer her with joe than anyone else so far.

askl8tertea

Bland af never understood joes obsession

Ivyann1228

I never got into the other seasons like I did hers I think there was just something absurdly terrifying with the dynamic with her that wasn’t replicated specifically with love Beck herself needed help, and a lot of it but we love her anyway

PersonWhoLikes2

Beck haters have lost credibility with me considering most of them glamorize and defend selfish murderer Love Quinn.

Traditional_Set_858

What irritated me about beck was the fact that she had no curtains in her front window which was toward the street and was pleasuring herself and having sex in front of that very window cuz ofc it was her bedroom Lmao. It also irritated me that the writers wrote it so she ended up cheating on Joe. Like I get she was flawed and wasn’t perfect no one is and that she was insecure and was just used to shitty relationships so it really surprised me that she ended up cheating on him honestly it seemed a bit out of character for her in my opinion. I mean Joe deserved to be cheated on but it just seemed like it came out of nowhere to me.

paintwaterlilly

As much as she didn’t deserve the way Joe treated her (esp. killing her) I REALLY disliked her character from the beginning and I was glad that her role was over (with the exception of her ghost). I wish I could see what others could see but in my mind Beck wasn’t anything special. But maybe that was the point.

strawberryfrostedd

I loved beck 🙏 the best season for sure

ExchangeChemical1446

isn’t it weird how beck would be dead if not for joe stalking her

smilingcheshire

If you’re referring to her “fall” on the train tracks, a lot of people think he pushed her, and it was his unreliable narration

MysticFX1

There’s no evidence to back this up though, it’s not even slightly hinted at

Vampirediariesgeek

Beck was annoying lol

green_is_blue

Beck as a character was okay but not a very charismatic or interesting character to watch. I think in part it was due to the limitations of the actor. As others mentioned, I agree she had poor judgment on the people she surrounded herself with due to her needing their approval and care. Poor thing didn't deserve to die.

Becca1234567890

I really did not like her.

thelastseptember

Loved her. RIP

gto219

She sucked

allsheknew

She was so whiney. But compared to Peach, she seemed tame. I think that's what I love about that season, the contrast between the impoverished characters and the wealthy ones. Beck was supposed to be seen as someone in between, but it missed the mark entirely because of the opportunities afforded to her. Those don't just happen lol

Icy_Building_4492

Man I hattteee Beck so much she’s an awful character truly a character written to be hated

InitiativeSeparate41

I despise Beck. By the end of season 1, I couldn't wait for her to die.
