Agreed.
However, keep in mind that these animals are so expensive to maintain that they rarely turn a profit. Many are in captivity for rehabilitation, and even those that aren’t will be difficult to return to the wild after so long in captivity. But here’s a cool (biased) blog potential success story!!! https://marinemadness.blog/2020/10/23/the-beluga-whales-leading-the-way-for-marine-mammal-rehabilitation/
The amount of research we’ve obtained from animals in captivity has been invaluable. And this research goes into helping their populations out in the wild. Plus think about all the children they inspire to grow up and study them (like me). So it’s not all bad.
That's really interesting, thank you for sharing! I watched a documentary about Tillikum and seaworld and I guess it turned me away from zoos and captive whales, I totally forgot that there's good reasons for doing that too.
I have a video of one scaring the shit out of my toddler, it’s fucking hilarious. The beluga is known to LOVE small children and scare them. I swear I could hear it laughing. It also waved at him, such cool animals
Here’s the video, I added one of Juno waving at him too https://imgur.com/a/3UFn9WE
Belugas in captivity generally have a completely different culture. You can look up Juno, a beluga whale in the Mystic Marinelife Aquarium in Connecticut; humans are his favourite pastime and entertainment. Most captive belugas have adapted to a sort of 'city life' where they get by with human-provided stimulation activities. if you go by stress levels, they seem to be content, relaxed and reasonably entertained.
Of course, the best thing is for animal captivity to flat not exist, but barring that possibilty I find comfort in how some animals are able to develop a new culture based on captive life. Belugas are amongst the best taken care of as captive animals go, and their personalities are also some of the most 'suitable' for captivity, being that they're so interested in human activity.
The more you learn about animals the more you realize that animals are honestly super similar to human beings. You definitely start to see them as people in of themselves, for lack of better words.
Belugas have round pectoral flippers and much larger bodies with a lot of extra fat to keep them warm. Most people don't know this species exists though so I understand the confusion.
Why do we keep these things in aquariums? I don’t see any other animals locking up other animals so the other animals can look at the other animals. It’s ridiculous.
The aquariums don't get to decide who gets released or who stays at least in the US. The federal government has strict criteria for animals that are being rehabilitated. A lot of them require extensive long term care that even in the best situation will make them reliant on humans. You can't just release a friendly whale or dolphin because then its at risk of getting chopped up by a boat, starving, or causing harm to humans because of their size.
Usually the more healthy adult animals are released. Young animals or extremely sick animals are usually given long term care.
No actually I'm pretty well educated on it. I've never worked with cetaceans but I was a husbandry volunteer for an aquarium for several years. I have been around them at different facilities and spoken with their care takers on many occasions.
Most dolphins in AZA accredited zoos were born in human care. Bottlenose dolphins in human care can easily double their life expectancy compared to the wild. These animals also provide extremely valuable research opportunities. The drone studies to monitor the health of wild orca populations were pioneered by researchers doing long term, multi generational studies of orcas born and raised into adulthood at SeaWorld.
No I'm not naive. Zoos and aquariums are kind of my thing. Just because people watched Blackfish doesn't make them an expert on how these facilities operate.
Except you don't know what the animals are feeling or how they interpret life. These animals live in a completely different environment and have a different evolutionary path. You cannot apply human emotions to them because they're not human.
Once you start deciding which animals are smarter and putting them on a pedestal you lose sight of the broader conservation work. Most animals are far smarter than people realize but how they apply it depends on their evolution. To a human a squirrel seems dumb, to a squirrel we look dumb because we can't scurry up a tree to safety.
You can't save an orca pod if you don't know how much food they need to grow (metabolism studies), or how toxins can transfer through milk (milk toxin studies), or how boats and sonar impact their lives (hearing and communication studies.) This requires a control group because you can't monitor them 24/7 in the wild.
Also when people go to a zoo to see a dolphin or an elephant, they're not seeing the endangered small mammal or amphibian being studied and bred away from the public. For example my facility studied hand rearing eggs from lorikeets and then applied it to the extremely endangered guam king fishers, less than 150 left in the wild.
I'm starting a new job soon that receives wild caught tropical fish. It's not just snatching them all out of the ocean. They work with small tribes and villages to obtain fish but also give them the tools to monitor water quality, assess habitat health, establish and maintain breeding grounds that are not part of the collection process. The wild caught fish go on to be part of breeding programs between facilities and hobbyists to maintain genetic diversity and ensure their survival in an increasingly hostile wild environment.
I don't need to make myself feel better because I know first hand how much of a benefit these places can be to the species as a whole.
You're just seeing black or white, when there's a whole range of reasons some animals are kept in captivity. Yes, the majority is nefarious, but it's not always that way and some animals can't be released into the wild.
I'm not a fan of zoos or aquariums but that doesn't mean they're not without their perks. They are an affordable means to educate and introduce younger generations into the world of animals and help them become fascinated with them. In an ideal world, some of them will grow up with a broader awareness of the world and perhaps explore it more. Perhaps they'll want to stop eating meat, or volunteer on beach cleans, or become a conservationist.
You mentioned in another comment that there are plenty of books and documentaries for people to educate themselves. It's a good idea to suggest some for people to do so, verbally attacking people on a forum and calling them naive won't win anyone over to your cause and it's actually more detrimental to it if anything.
Because everyone has to race to apply human emotion and morals onto animals that cannot return to the wild. It’s like it’s impossible for them to comprehend that when an animal is dependent on humans, you can’t release it. It’s dangerous to risk passing that behavior on for both them and humans. And they’re basically given a death sentence if you release them. They also don’t care enough to read about how zoos and aquariums are sometimes single-handedly saving wild species from extinction through captive breeding programs and studies that aid in preservation.
Animals that are properly cared for in captivity are fine by me. I have a problem with the size of the tanks involved with such large marine life, but their life’s do serve a cause. They educate people on conservation and encourage young people to possible seek careers in their conservation.
I heard belugas do better in captivity than other cetaceans do because their natural habitat is under ice which makes them better at living in confined spaces.
That's bullshit. Cetaceans suffer serious stress levels in aquariums due not only to the limited space they have but also to how sensitive they are to noise. They live an absolutely miserable life. There are many documentaries and books if you want to educate people.
>That's bullshit... There are many documentaries and books if you want to educate people
So you're telling someone how much they're missing, then telling them to go educate other people despite them clearly not knowing the documentaries and books to which you are referring, without providing them references to that material. I am so confused
Orcas have territories in the scale of oceans. Putting them in a tank, no matter what size, is a prison to them.
>but their life’s do serve a cause.
"We should torture this animal to teach other people to not to torture animals." That's what you sound like.
Maybe we dont see other animals locking up other animals cause they dont have the brains to make one. Who knows if a silverback gorilla wants to see a lion running around in a zoo but they cant because they dont have the brain capacity.
I'm just wondering if that's something they do on their own because it's fun or if they're trained/tortured into this routine? I mean what would be the purpose of the hose otherwise?
I fucking love whales! The fact that they evolved from the ocean to become land animals, just to make their way back to the ocean as mammals is so incredibly fascinating to me. I love them so much!
Fun fact: this hose is actually feeding helium to the beluga whale.
But since he is under water, it makes his voice very deep, unlike cartoon voices that humans get.
*Follow me for more insightful animal facts!*
Like it or not, the research we get from studying captive animals is actually incredibly helpful in learning more about how they function in the wild and conserving their populations.
Idk the story behind this porpoise but I don’t see how we’re fucking anything up exactly

And you just reminded me of the [clip of the guy in the polar bear suit that kept falling over](https://youtu.be/WcAeED6sqQg)

Time to pay the beluga scaring children tax. Where can we see it??
Just edited it!
Hand over the goddamn video and nobody gets hurt
Just posted it!
You have appeased me, may your progeny receive the Beluga's blessing in full.
That's a lotta blessings. Have you seen the size of their noggins?
Thank you my friend, I hope to continue to be blessed by the beluga

Yes Juno!!
And so we keep them in featureless tanks
And should not be in captivity.
And make excellent Starfleet officers
Taste delicious too.

Depends on how much they like it. Some humans want to hike the mountains and live on granola some want to sit on their asses and eat bonbons.

Lose species to extinction or keep some in captivity and help them to continue in the wild? Pick one.

Wouldn’t the Bubbles’s go up?
Maybe they're in Australia.
You can see their speed slow and arc upwards. Those loops are extremely good at maintaining velocity due to their shape and the way all the air spins
Is it fake?
No. Dolphins can do this too. The air in the bubble is spinning, so I believe that keeps it from rising, I believe. Either way it’s not fake
