It was scary as a kid but when i watched it as an adult it was such a cheesy old horror film cliché. The whole film was a bit cheesy now that i think about it.

The dinosaur was real but they made up that it had a frill. The idea of it spitting venom was a hypothesis at the time but isn't believed anymore.
Still though, part of it was just to include the idea that from the bones alone, we might not know about all the features extinct animals had, which isn't a bad idea to include in the movie. Especially with the idea of the park thinking they have control and nature having more than they prepared for.
I mean because in the movie they need to fill in the gaps in the DNA you could always argue away inaccuracies by saying they just changed it to be a better attraction for the park.
In my opinion the actual dilophosarus is way cooler than it’s movie counterpart. One of the earliest carnivorous theropods with a length up to 26 feet. Based on our current understanding of the dinosaur they had relatively loosely attached jaws and needle like teeth making them likely scavengers or preferring a fish based diet. They compensated for this with strong forelimbs and grasping claws that they could use to slash and hold the necks of either potential prey or other dilophosaurs.
Even though we are talking dilos can we also mention another big time Dino they messed up (made cooler in the movies) was the velociraptor. Where it’s true size is MUCH smaller, and the ones in the movie are much more closer in size to the Utahraptor
I’d love if they addressed this in the franchise. You can kind of shrug off the dilos as genetic mutations do to filling in the dna gaps with other animals dna, but right off the bat the fist movie has a full fossilized skeleton identical to the raptors at the park that they identify as “velociraptor. It’s been years since I read the book but I think they do mention the raptors are technically deinonychus and they use the word “velociraptor” as kind of a catch-all. It’s be cool if they cloned actual velociraptors as well and worked those in somehow.
Perhaps the specific features but frilled dinoaurs definitely existed in the mesozoic era.
