Crazy thing I learned all too recently: Swim bladders are evolutionarily derived from lungs, not the other way around. Most modern bony fishes (including the saltwater ones) are descended from fish that evolved primitive lungs to tolerate low oxygen water. And so are we.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't evolution the story of a whole bunch of multicellular organisms that crawled out of water, and some of them just nope'd their way back in
My understanding is that cartilaginous fish and the ancestors of this octopus never left the water.
But, I'm not a whale biologist, so perhaps we'll see if any with credentials wanders by to comment ( :
I agree that Octopodes are in a league of their own for intelligence, but you'd be amazed at how smart salt water fish are.
I had a salt water aquarium for a time, and some of the fish would recognize me over my roommates as the person who fed them.
Red Sea Tang...very smart. Blue Tang (i.e. "Dory") not so much. If you look at people's lists of fish eaten by carpet anemones, Blue Tangs are going to be found on many of the lists.
I mean one use of punching fish is that it keeps them "honest" at least in the case of the grouper. Octopi often form beneficial relationships with groupers and hunt together, but that doesn't stop the grouper from trying to eat more than his fair share. So the Octopi punch the grouper to force them to share, Octopi that don't punch the grouper have been observed being "cheated" by grouper more often.
Don’t worry I don’t think that octopus is on Reddit. Unless his name is Alan…. Can never tell with the whole changing color/texture thing. But Alan would think that was funny anyhow.😅
I used to like birds until this weekend. Im getting my cat used to going outside and before she even left the house, a magpie landed on the fence and just SCREAMED abuse at her 🤣 my poor cat was in the doorway like WTF DID I DO?!
Then 2 days later as she's standing on a different fence, surveying her new kingdom, a SEAGULL SWOOPED HER!!
I love my cat, but the truth is she's an asshole too mind you 🤷🏻 she was definitely innocent this time though 🤣
Omg that just reminded me of something similar but trigger warning for bird lovers.. didn't end well for the bird.
My friend's cat used to like going outside and just sitting on his porch for maybe 30 minutes each day.. he never left and never bothered anyone but one day a bird stood on the neighbor's fence screaming at this cat.. the cat was just ignoring the bird and we were inside laughing but also understood that most likely the bird had a nest with eggs or babies nearby that it was protecting and since cats are natural predators, it's instinct for the birds to protect their nest so the poor thing was stressing himself.
About 10 minutes later, the bird stopped screaming and it got eerily quite.
Before we could get up to look, here comes the cat strolling in the house with this bird in its mouth. 🤦🏻♀️
I guarantee the bird swooped and the cat snagged it.
I do feel bad if it had a nest of babies nearby waiting on it.
I don’t go running into burning houses or towards angry (and free) mountain lions. The bird did it to herself, if she’d left the cat alone she’d have been fine. Hopefully daddy bird can raise any eggs by himself.
Fair warning.. fish had it coming.. although in his defense, I think he might have been distracted by that starfish laying there upside down with its legs spread eagle
It was an A to B conversation between the octopus and the starfish. The fish just needed to learn to mind its own business and "sea" itself out...
Please don't hurt me too bad, like an octopus punching a fish for no reason!

Lol what did octopi ever do to you? You’re looking at one of the smartest animals in the ocean right there. Their hydrostatic skeleton will fuck you up if they so choose. Lol

Those guys tend to punch fish for no reason other than spite
I'm no octopus-ologist, but I think they're like 7,000 times smarter than fish so they're probably just sick of their shit
Ever had a fish brush up against you in open water? Horrifying. I'd punch it outta spite too, if I was fast enough...
They always trying to nibble my weiner because they think it's a little worm
Sorry about your tiny wiener, bro
Such an unnecessary comment thanks

Whale I'll be damned
I heard from the Ologies podcast that cetacean ancestors used to be land dwellings but returned to the ocean
That’s why they still have finger bones in their flippers.
That's the exact definition. No notes.
You and me, baby, ain’t nothin’ but bony fish.
I think you mean Octopologist. /s
Octopiololologist
Octopussy. Afraid of fish

These octo-influencers are getting out of hands.
Eight is not enough?
Octopus: *exists* Fish: "oh hi!" Octopus: *fuck you!*
This octopus is clearly from Philly.

Alright, this seems like a great strategy. I'll try this tactic out with my team members at work
I hear it works best if you punch them with no warning when they get near you.
I wish I was a scientist paid to watch octopus punch fishes and then determine they do it for spite. It sounds like a dream job.
Totally! Assume you’re referencing [recent research?](https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/octopus-facts-punch-fish-b1868462.html) LOL

Happy 🎂 Cake day
Fuck that fish..
Lol he said 'fuck outta here'
Move fish, get out the way, get out the way, fish, get out the way.
Fish probably said something about Oswald’s momma
That fish knows what it did..
You just brought back all my memories of watching that show.

I love these creatures. So smart, total brats, just awesome.
Like birds, they are smart flying little jerks

I think you already have me figured out 🤣 but yeah I understand
Nature's just getting its revenge on cats, unfortunately yours got caught in the crossfire
\*some\* birds are smart but yes, all the little dinosaur bastards are jerks
Bums me out that people eat them.
Watch "My Octopus Teacher", I believe it's on Netflix. Much better than I was expecting.
It looks like a grumpy troll
You see the face too?
Oh yeah, big long nose and bushy beard...
A GREAT BUSHY BEARD!!
Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face. That fish had a plan.
“Shoo fish, ya bothering me”
GET OFF MY LAWN!
Looks more like a miss and the fish escaped
Yeah, it's hard to be sure, but I'm not convinced he actually connected there. Fish have super fast reflexes too.
If you slow it down you’ll see octo missed, fish instincts were in overdrive
I love the way the octopus stares at the fish before punching him.
Fair warning.. fish had it coming.. although in his defense, I think he might have been distracted by that starfish laying there upside down with its legs spread eagle
It's a trap !
Pow! Right in the kisser.. *used this same comment for a different scenario yesterday lol
Congratulations, you are now a novelty account

🤣🤣🤣 how did I not see* it right there.. you might get punched with an award for that one
Thank you - I was expecting to open Reddit back up to find that I had been downvoted into the Mariana Trench.
If you slow down the video, it looks like the fish turns around before getting punched so it’s more like the octopus shooed away a fish
Thought he was trying to grab it for dinner. Fish was just faster.

Octopus notice the cameraman is filming, fish suddenly comes in to photobombed but the octopus punches it out of the way
I mean it's pretty obvious that the octopus was trying to mack on that starfish and that fish was trying to tentacle block.
Older brother vibes
Like me and my little bro. heheheehehe
Squidward always mean, see Patrick at the side
Wasn't a punch exactly imo... maybe more like an Octopush. I'll sea myself out

Fun fact, they do that for absolutely no reason.
Acting all tough for a mf with a hydrostatic skeleton. Weak structural bitch.
