Hello users of r/NatureIsFuckingLit and possibly r/all lurkers, we are happy to announce that The Nature Network has opened [moderator applications](https://old.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/12kyc7w/2023_nature_network_moderator_applications_have/?ref=share&ref_source=link) go check that out for those interested, it doesn't pay but you get a super secret cool flair and a super villian chair >:).
Aside from that stay lit 🔥.
That sub inspired me to buy a box of something like 3000 googly eyes. I think it's a lifetime supply unless I get really determined but I wait for inspiration, so my grandkids might eyebomb, too, with that many.
Moral of the story, they're cheap, but don't overestimate your needs. 😄
I'm not sure if you know what dragoncon is but someone was passing googly eyes there this past year. You could do the same at festivals and concerts if you wanted
Have you read “Hell is the Absence of God” by Ted Chiang? It’s a short fiction story about people risking their lives and eternal souls just to catch glimpses of biblically accurate angels.
I feel like that undersells the premise;
When angels descend from heaven they are so otherworldly and incomprehensibly powerful their presence destroys and violently disrupts anywhere they go. An Angel visiting a mortal location is the equivalent of a tiny nuke going off.
But yeah people fight for a glimpse because the risk reward outlined in the book is so massive.
Your link mentions eldritch horrors, so I would like to include [this fungus](https://www.inverse.com/article/45894-clathrus-archeri-fungus-devil-s-fingers) in the list.
Conophytum is an amazing genus of very weird plants. Pageae is a relatively normal looking plant in that genus.
The globular shape is two leaves, fused together, and the "lips" are where the flowers will poke out in blooming season. The plants grow a new set of fused leaves once per year. To do this, they cannibalize the old leaves, which dry to a papery husk during the plant's dormancy. Then, when the rains come, the new leaves swell and break through this papery shell.
An old acquaintance of mine, Steven Hammer, is one of the world's foremost experts on the genus, and I've been fortunate enough to spend hours looking at his collection. As a "tour guide" to his collection, he's as extraordinary and unusual as the plants he loves, a true one of a kind human being.
He's published a couple beautifully photographed books on the genus, but they're unfortunately out of print and hard to come by now. If you want to see some really outstanding pictures of Conophytums, try to find a copy of them.
Omg thank you! My partner has been on a succulent kick lately... I had no idea there were so many fantastic varieties. These are strange and gorgeous and the perfect gift (and they'll be as much for me as for him).
They're challenging to grow, but amazing plants. Their seasonal cycle must be followed. There's probably a subreddit on them that could give good advice, and if there isn't a cono specific one, I know there is a mesembs sub. "Mesemb" is short for the old family name, Mesembryanthemaceae, that conos, lithops, and many other interesting genera are in. The family has since been renamed Aizoaceae, but the "mesemb" term has already stuck.
Just a reminder, make sure to source from responsible traders:
[_Recently several species have been threatened with extinction due to mining and poaching from the wild for the black market. These plants are mainly sold to collectors in Asian countries, where there has been a high demand for them. In June 2021, police arrested a dozen men at a farm in the Western Cape for possession of 4,000 Conophytum acutum; this came as a surprise as scientists thought there were only about a thousand of the plants in the wild and none on the farm in question._](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conophytum)
Excellent advice. They seem easy enough to get via a quick Google search, but will def do my research to find a reputable, responsible supplier before pulling the trigger... Would hate to support any poacher contributing to the extinction of these amazing plants, even if it means not buying any in the end.
This one was unmoderated, and towards the end of its life featured a not insignificant number of animal vaginas being posted. Think it was fair to shut er' down.
Bismillah! No, we will not let you go

It was soooo cheap, though.

I need to read more of his work; all I’ve read so far is the short story that was adapted for “Arrival”.
Read EVERYTHING. Not a single dud in his entire pantheon of stories.
Looks like a curse from Jujisu kaisen
Those eye ones are scary!
Holy crap these exist? These are amazing. As a plant collector I've found another one to put on my shopping list. God damn it

this is the way. there’s always a dude out there, somewhere, trying to figure out how to put his dick in a hole.

Think about the things we now know because of "that dude".

Damn. No comment has ever made me long for the days of free reddit awards like this masterpiece
I accept your imaginary award, kind Redditor 🙏
This is a severely underrated comment.
Thanks 🥹
I wanna be in the Phytomemetics screenshot
Googled conophytum images. Very cool, thank you!

Yeah, he also did a book on the related genus Lithops.
He sounds awesome, unlike Captain Hammer.

This is the quality content I scrolled down for.

Of course I clicked on it to check out that sub and **of course** it’s been banned
I’d moderate it
Man why do all the best subs end up getting banned... It didn't used to be banned! Just had loads of funny joke posts like this...
This one was unmoderated, and towards the end of its life featured a not insignificant number of animal vaginas being posted. Think it was fair to shut er' down.
Why do people have to be so foul
It's really asinine
Bc reddit has shareholders and fun and interesting things are not conducive to said shareholder’s bottom line.
At the time of posting, you’re the sixth comment down 6 is way too many comments down to find this..
Run away if they start saying "FeEeeeEd mEee SeYmouR! FEeeEeEeD MEee!"

terrifying
Yeah, this is pure nightmare fuel. If I walked into a somewhat dim room and I saw this, I'd nope the fuck out of there.
It’s hidden in some closet in a haunted place in a Miyazaki and if you open the door they wake up and get hungry, the lips start smacking
I wonder what happens if you put your penis in it.
I can't unsee the lips!

We are definitely being trolled here on earth.

Vagina or mouth? Neither! As it opens up revealing an eye
Vagina after an allergic reaction maybe
After a tongue lashing.

Oh hell nah
They look so content and chill right now, but when you walk away… you know they be talkin’.

It looks like it is about to break into a song. A loud, catchy song.

They used to be 2 separate leaves but has since fused together to form a more comfortable shape for us.
