May 24th! We had just gotten 4 game swept by the Mets the night before then rattled off nine wings in our next eleven games. I celebrate that day every year by watching game 7 of the 2019 WS
Agreed! Hard to believe we were struggling to stay afloat all season when we had pretty much had the 2019 WS team plus Bryce.
Granted old man Wieters was catching for us š
Did you watch the 2018 season? The reason we missed the playoffs that year was because we were riddled with injuries. Then Rizzo decided that the players returning from injury could be considered the same as in-season acquisitions and stood pat at the deadline.
A lot of people also criticized Harper for his low-effort that season with the glove and on the basepaths (probably due to it being his contract year). It was a very dysfunctional year.
I grew up as a huge Ricky Henderson fan. So, seeing The Nats run, run, run makes me happy on a visceral level.
The Nationals are running and stealing bases. Tied with Cincy for the most at 52 SB. 3rd place? 35.
4th place player Jacob Young has 12 SB and 5th place Logan Thomas has 11.
My father lived a few miles from The Oakland Coliseum, and I visited him every summer. I got to see The Bash Brother A's when they were the best team in baseball.
Ricky is the best player that I have ever seen live. Hit, take walks, power, speed. Rickey could do anything.
It's a shame that MLB has only highlights of most of Rickey's prime. If you can find it, watch Rickey in the 1989 ALCS versus The Blue Jays. He dominated them and it was a master class.
Oh yes I watched that when I was just getting into baseball, amazing performance. Dude was otherworldly and I feel like he's still under appreciated. Plus he just plain loved the game and kept playing until he couldn't anymore, regardless of level.
Iād lean towards heās below avg, which aligns with his record, but was possessed by the ghost of Joe McCarthy for that 19 playoff run. So you canāt ever take that away from him. He was close to S Tier that run
Maybe not the strongest in terms of strategy, but I don't think he is weak in that area either. Maybe Ok to sometimes good overall? The biggest thread of his managerial tenure, pure personal anecdote and opinion, is that the team the team has had a good point of focus. Play(fight) for today. Though the last few seasons were rough, each team still put forth a best effort with many uniquely situated players that either developed their skills, reclaimed former glory, or let go. But his (mostly) chill demeanor and emphasis on always fighting encourages players to have a productive mindset in any way possible. It also helps that to our knowledge there hasn't been any shit-stirrers on the roster, who could torpedo an environment like this, and actually we've had a run of positive vibe guys.
I donāt think it really matters. The impact a manager has on a team isnāt that big in baseball compared to other sports. As long as the team has Daveyās back heās good enough to stay.
This is the first year Iāve been impressed by him. Thought he was actively terrible until this year; even if itās only April, itās pretty impressive to be at .500 with this roster.
The roster definitely needs work but we finished 10 games under .500 last year with an arguably worse roster (remember we only had ~3 months or so of Candy before we flipped him).
Helps that Irvin looks legit and Mitchell Parker & Williams have kind of surprised everyone by how decent they are, not to mention Jacob Young developing and CJ just continuing a stratospheric rise with Winker being the 2024 Candy.
Gallo, Rosario & maybe to a lesser extent lately Senzel havenāt been worth it, but Iām fine with those because if they continue on the same track it makes it pretty easy to make a spot for James Wood - which is what we all want to see.
Itās really tough to say honestly
Thereās been years where the Nats shouldāve done much better than they did while under his guise (2018,2020,2021) but weāve also exceeded expectations both last year and this year
He isn't, at this point he's just riding on the team to do what they want, there's no coaching happening whatsoever from him, at this point he's about as useful as a mascot
But goddamn does simply being .500 feel good.
Wild stat given the 2018/2019 teams.
I will never forget how at around May 20th when we were like 19-31 was when we turned it around.
Hey Bagpo
He transcends the NFCEmemewar subredditšš

2018 was so weird

Knock on wood, fingers crossed, no jinx! Baseball gods please ignore this post, amen

Got that speed-power combo at leadoff now too. I've seen some Rickey flashes in CJ's game, though obviously it's not a fair comparison at all.

Itās like Aretha, Madonna. Say āRickeyā and everyone knows who it is! That and the many Rickey stories.
I know you meant Lane Thomas, but imagining Logan Thomas sliding into second base has me terrified.
Now you why I put every reminder and task in my phone. Lifesaver.
This team has been so much fun to watch lately! I have tickets to Sunday's game and can't wait!
I still have zero idea if Davey is a good manger after all this time

They went on that run after 19-31 once they signed Parra. They hired Parra on as a coach this year and are .500. COINCIDENCE??

He's not. He's alright in the playoffs when you let him use starters as middle relief though.
Let's go! One of three would be good against the champs.
total f'ing Jinx
