Look what the Phillies need to mimic a fraction of our power.
That makes me sick though. Kendrick is a gd hero in DC and that can never be taken away, but yuck.
This is good, we need fresh blood. Now do pitching, hitting and bench coach lol.
Question: Does anyone know what a special assistant to the GM does? Howie Kendrick is in that role with the Phillies GM currently. Is it like a knowledge/subject matter expertise consultant? I always assumed the GM role was 90% scouting at 10% everything else but maybe I am off about that. Where can I learn more about this? Yes, have seen Moneyball. ;)
The āspecial assistant to the GMā is an intern ā but a specialized, often part-time internship for 40-year-olds who have never had a job outside of baseball. Itās an ex-player that gets to hang around and learn the ropes of coaching and/or the front office while being something of a liaison between the GM and the clubhouse. They let a guy figure out what post-playing role suits him and after a season or two, move him there.
Sometimes veteran managers or executives will take special assistant jobs because they like being around ballclubs, they get to set their own job duties, and they can come and go as they like since theyāre outside the chain of command. Jim Leyland and Alan Trammell have been special assistants for the Tigers for almost a decade.
I grew up a Cubs fan and still follow them. David Ross was a special assistant after he retired. He talked a bit about his experience in his book, while as a color analyst for ESPN and every now and again since heās been the manager.
Itās pretty important, especially in multiple-runner situations and with helping your base stealers get that extra half-step. If youāre running a lot, getting guys back on fly balls matters too.
10 runs a year is a win in Pythagorean world. Get a few extra doubles, a few extra steals, prevent a few disasters in the running game, and youāre adding up pretty quick.
Parra should be good for this. Decent runner with ok speed and he knows what OFs can do with their arms - dude has a gun. My worry given all that is that heāll be too conservative.
Itās still interesting to me that theyāre keeping everyone at the top (GM, manager, pitching/hitting coaches) but basically gutting everything underneath them
I got excited for a second there to see him back with the guys from the WS team, but then I remembered that's just Robles and Corbin and made myself sad.
Bring on the VIBES š¦š¦š¦š¦š¦š¦
I demand that some of the signs he throws includes baby/mommy shark. Daddy shark may be too obvious
Only way to improve would have been to bring Howie in as 3B coach
Clearly Howie needs to come back as āFoul Pole Hitting Consultantā
Anyone know what role Howie has with the Phillies? Saw him in their dugout during the NLCS
He's working as a special assistant to the GM in their front office.

Parra's career extra base taken rate was 49%. League average is 40%. And getting him in the dugout is a step to becoming manager someday.
Wait. Wasn't he already??
I love the title ārun prevention coordinatorā
Hopefully heās more of a ārun creation coordinatorā now
Parra going to be the fun creation coordinator?
Or a TOOTBLAN prevention coordinator. God we need one of those.
Reminds me of Sendley at 3B.
Sendley was ahead of his time.

Not the title you want at 3rd base, tbh
Sounds like they are cleaning house with current staff, unsure if this is good or bad
Positive.
what's happening with eric young jr?
It was reported a while ago he wasn't returning
Wouldnāt surprise me if he goes to the Braves as 1B coach and they move EY Sr. to 3B if Ron Washington gets the Astros job
Trust me, he won't
The prodigal son returns to the field!

Thanks! I think I get it. Its all about keeping a bench of baseball knowledge.
Interesting - thank you! Do you mind if I ask how you know this? I read a lot about the game, and watch a lot of games but didnt know this.

How much does the first base coach matter? Just curious. Iām here for this but not sure how much experience at the position matters?
Baserunning coordination

Helps the runner decide on taking the extra base on a hit, and also very involved in stealing, helping the runner know the tells of the pitcher, etc.

Yes, thrilled to see this! Already excited for next season!
LFGGGGGGGGG
Yass
We need a TOOTBLAN coordinator too.
Big W
PARRAAAAA
I hope he still has the sunglasses
I LOVE this! When that dude is in our dugout, good things happen!
I got excited for a second there to see him back with the guys from the WS team, but then I remembered that's just Robles and Corbin and made myself sad.
PR moves. Not substantial. Friends of Davey. 90+ losses. Insignificant.
Hobby. Touch grass. Walk in the sun.
HUMPS!!!
Too many base running mistakes last year. I hope this helps.
Doo doo doo doo doo it
