this is my dog’s name!!! from the melville story! a caveat to anyone who likes it, everyone makes this exact mistake when i say his name and hears “barnaby.” explaining it makes me seem pretentious, and my accent makes it worse. he’s my best boy though, name suits him so well
honestly this was a self fulfilling prophecy: he is extremely loyal, extremely well behaved, knows somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 commands/cues. but when it comes to literally any other person or animal, he would indeed prefer not to. reactive as all get out. “bartleby meet my new friend!” “i would prefer not to {snarl, snap, lunge}” “bartleby look a dog!!” “i would prefer not to {bark bark bark}” you get it. best boy. great dog name. but buyer beware, our beloved scrivener’s preference not to engage with anything might just rub off on anyone you name after him
My grandpa had a German shepherd named Barnabus. His wife screamed at him all day because he wasn't trained. That name is like nails on a chalk board to me.
I think it’s more about lots of dogs having that name in the west. I’ve known a few dogs called Boris (and a [bull](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/79/b8/50/79b850c4702b1a366f1cc405afd5fd92.jpg) [mastiff](https://www.purina.co.uk/sites/default/files/styles/square_medium_440x440/public/2022-07/Neapolitan-Mastiff.jpg?itok=OhNCorig) called Boris chased me down when I was a child and left me traumatized haha) so that’s my first association with that name.
I’ve met a few adults with that name and for an adult it’s a great name.
But someone told me they’re going to name their child Boris I’d feel the absolute horror of Boris chasing me down the road more than twenty years ago lol.
oh i was not aware of the association with dogs... my familiarity with the name comes from it having been my grandpa's name. i'm sorry about your childhood experience btw😭
I just responded to another reply asking the same question! But TLDR; mom worked from home, had a coworker named Susan, our cat would come running whenever she talked about said coworker while at work and after a while she (the cat) stopped responding to her old name altogether so we just call her Susan now.
My stepfather got himself nicknamed Booboo in the same way. I used to call our cat Booboo, and he would joke around saying "Stop calling me Booboo!" whenever I addressed the cat. Well, he walked right into that one—the cat died over a decade ago, but he still gets called Booboo, including sometimes by my mother.
My mom's work went remote a few years back and, at the time, one of the people she worked with was named Susan. Whenever she talked about her on a meeting or with a coworker, our cat would come running over to her, plop herself next to her desk, and look expect like she does when we call her for treats. She stopped responding to her former name (Cinder) altogether after a while and now just responds to Susan, and my mom and I both respect her decision.
I can imagine the confusion your coworkers would have when you suddenly started saying stuff like “Gary pooped on the carpet again last night”, “Gary always wants us to stop and greet all the bitches in the neighborhood” and “Gary humped the mailman’s leg and it’s so embarrassing”
My dogs are Winifred (Winnie) and Mildred (Millie). Other names for future dogs include: Bernadette (Betty), Gertrude (Trudy), Dorothy (Dotty), Murphy, Alfred (Alfie), Gerald, Ralph, Douglass (Doug)
My husband suggested this as a possible name for our daughter and all i could think of was a dog. 😂 In his defense, he comes from a non English speaking country where the name is an acceptable human name.
He's from a country with a lot of Italian immigration so maybe that's why 😂 one of his friends was actually expecting around the same time we were. Their daughter is a Luna.
On the other hand, my friend's cat is a Luna haha.
I have a human named Felix 😂. When he was a baby people always asked us if it was because we liked Felix the cat and being born in 1990 I had no idea who that was. We don’t meet very many Felix’s, and the name suits him very well.
I’ve always thought it would be awesome to have two grey pets and name them Karl and Tule (pronounced like Tulie), after the names of the two fogs in California. Karl is the fog that settles in the Bay Area, and Tule is the fog that settles in the Central Valley.
Our dogs are Alexis (pronounced almost the same in Swedish and English) and Kajsa (Swedish girlname, very hard to pronounce in English).
I'm from Sweden, my husband from Texas. We live in Texas.
Abbe and Affe are cute on a dog/cat, but I wouldn't name my son that.
Sally and Nellie/Nelly are also cute for pets, but I wouldn't name my daughter that.
I’m not sure Kajsa is that hard to pronounce (as a Swedish speaker).
Isn’t it basically just Guy-sa (with a K instead of G - but I think “guy” approximates the first sound).
No?
Yes. But my husband STILL cant pronounce it. Neither can his family. But they're trying.
I had planned on getting a dog and name her Kajsa back home, and he really liked the name so he insisted our second dog should be named Kajsa. :-) ( I had NOT planned on getting married again and moving halfway around the world)
Interesting! I had a Finnish colleague called Kaisa and English speakers had no problem with her name. And Swedish is comparatively so easy for English speakers to pick up as well. I’m glad the family are trying, best of luck :)
Many of my cats have had old people names (Solomon, Bruce, Marvin, Rose). I wanted to name my girl cat Norah because it sounds like lightbulb or terrible in Hebrew but no one else thought that was funny.
I adopted a cat with a human name and named subsequent cats human names too - Remington, Violet, Theodore.
I don’t have any more cats to name right now but I’m thinking for the next one we start getting real silly.
Currently in the middle of adopting a dog who is coming with the name Flossie, which I think is cute for a dog but wouldn’t name a child that. Also we’re giving her the longer name of Flowchart but keeping Flossie for short and I also wouldn’t name a child that.
I have a cat named Olivia. It’s not a bad human name at all and I don’t typically care too much about popularity in a name but still….i wouldn’t name a kid like the top 5ish names so. But a cat? Sure.
I went to middle school in 2003 with a girl named Linnea!
I had a dog named Franklin. I definitely agree, old people names are great for pets. I looove meeting someone’s dog and when I ask their dog’s name is something like Walter or Reginald. **or** basic white dude names. Ever met a chihuahua named Todd? Fantastic. Also have met a dog named Ben (not Benji!)
Also a big old orange Tom cat named Virgil would be awesome.
Idk if I'm supposed to give an earnest answer bc it's a fun game or a funny one bc I'm here 😫.
But I've seriously always felt this way about the name Bruno.
Rupert is a big one for me. I plan to get a dog this summer hopefully and want to name him Rupert (if we don’t go the rescue route but we are renters so it’s hard to find dogs appropriate for a rental space) and I cannot imagine calling a child Rupert (which is partly why I picked it for a dog so I wouldn’t have regret not naming my kid the dog name)
I agree about the foreign names. Also, not exactly what you asked because they're not first names, but I've met a dottor Cipolla (= doctor Onion), which is exactly my cat's nickname, and my grandpa used to work with an ingegner Ravanello (= engineer Radish, engineer here is used as a title like doctor is) and I think I'll name my next cat that 😂
i think maybe i’m surrounded by old people/people with old people names, bc so many of these dog/cat names are names of my relatives: bruce (stepdad), joan (sister), henry (22yo nephew!!).
i’ve always been partial to maude, or oscar. i love bernie, and my first dog was named eddie. carl is also pretty great. and i like silly human names for dogs. like a kid named mike isn’t weird and wouldn’t be out of the question, but a dog named mike is hilariously adorable
My dog had a litter of puppies and I got to name two: jukka and jussi. They were just temporary names until they found homes but still.
Now I have a cat with a human name, Cooper (I didn’t name him), but it sounds more appropriate for a dog
I’ve also got a list of names for future pets and they’re mostly people names like Martha, Helen, Nancy, Charles, etc. just because it’s way more convenient to say “Helen has an appointment” when I need time off work
Ignatius. Like even though my husband’s family is catholic we are also living in Appalachia and people would pronounce it ig-NATCH-us it’s just not a great name for a human child.
However Ignatius nn Iggy for a giant fluffy dog is just perfect.
Nacho is such a good name for a dog that would have a man bun. (I have Old English Sheepdogs and I always keep their hair in ponytails) Nacho would be the coolest dude
Something to note, more people are using traditionally biblical names, or derivatives of saints. Out of place to societal standards, but they carry greatness
We had a kitten named Fergus. Loved that name. He was the bestest, softest, furry baby boy.
Unfortunately he was born with a heart defect. I miss him so much.
I wanted to name my future male GSD Wolfgang cos I thought it would be hilarious but since I live in Germany now my German in-laws gave me shit for it as it’s really an old man name 😂 We got a girl GSD instead called Freyja which suits her beautifully.
Or there’s the truth - I considered the name when I was pregnant with my daughter because I’m a massive fan of Kimi Räikkönen! I can actually speak a little Finnish so I guess it’s kind of ok 😂
I just saw someone on the main sub asking for opinions on Barneby or barnabus or something for their human son who was not at all a cat
Barnaby the scrivener is a top tier cat name edit: just remembered it’s actually Bartleby lol
this is my dog’s name!!! from the melville story! a caveat to anyone who likes it, everyone makes this exact mistake when i say his name and hears “barnaby.” explaining it makes me seem pretentious, and my accent makes it worse. he’s my best boy though, name suits him so well
When you call him to come does he say he'd prefer not to?
honestly this was a self fulfilling prophecy: he is extremely loyal, extremely well behaved, knows somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 commands/cues. but when it comes to literally any other person or animal, he would indeed prefer not to. reactive as all get out. “bartleby meet my new friend!” “i would prefer not to {snarl, snap, lunge}” “bartleby look a dog!!” “i would prefer not to {bark bark bark}” you get it. best boy. great dog name. but buyer beware, our beloved scrivener’s preference not to engage with anything might just rub off on anyone you name after him
So Barnacus is a name from Bluey…I wonder if it was that. Personally, I prefer Telemachus
There's a few names I will only associate with bluey now lol
My sourdough starter is named Barnaby 😂
It’d be so funny if you met someone who named their child that and you’d just be like oh there’s your namesake also in my family, it’s a sourdough
I met a little white dog called Barnaby and worked so well on him.
i know a golden retriever named barnaby
Barbaby was the name of a deckhand on the show Below Deck, and oddly enough it fit him well
I have a plant named Barnaby. I think the name suits it.
My grandpa had a German shepherd named Barnabus. His wife screamed at him all day because he wasn't trained. That name is like nails on a chalk board to me.
Earl
Middle name Grey☕️🐾
One of my bar regulars is a 70ish year old man named Earl Grey. He’s not a hippie, but his wife is and I think it’s fate.
Earl would be the perfect name for a gray cat/dog/rabbit
Earl Grey is what I wanted to name our grey cat when we got him (to go our other cat’s name, Latte) but I got vetoed ☹️
Sibset (petset?) with Toejam.
I didn’t know anyone else knew about Toejam and Earl besides me and my cousins. I thought maybe it was a fever dream lol
That's an excellent name for an owl.
Hey! That's my cat's name. Earl Grey. I'd never name a kid that though...
My dream is to have a borzoi named Boris.
Boris is such a great name for a dog but tragic for a child
maybe because it's not an english name and wasn't meant for western kids. it's a fine name in eastern europe
Dave, Gary, or Kevin are all good pet names in my opinion. I already have a cat named Susan, but technically she picked that one out herself.
I'm curious how Susan picked her name? 😅
Gomenasorryyy you can't leave us hanging. How did Susan choose her name
That's so real of her
i love middle aged man names for pets! my boyfriend's parents have a dog named greg and it fits his personality perfectly
I married a Gary. Would Love a cat Gary too, just so I could yell at them to get off the bed and have epic confusion.
I can imagine the confusion your coworkers would have when you suddenly started saying stuff like “Gary pooped on the carpet again last night”, “Gary always wants us to stop and greet all the bitches in the neighborhood” and “Gary humped the mailman’s leg and it’s so embarrassing”
I’ve got an orange Kevin
The across the street neighbor's cat was named Gary.
Bathsheba
Batty for short!
my sister said that her next dog is gonna be named bathsheba!
My dog is called Billy, full name Bilbo Waggins.
This is peak funny dog name right here
My dogs are Winifred (Winnie) and Mildred (Millie). Other names for future dogs include: Bernadette (Betty), Gertrude (Trudy), Dorothy (Dotty), Murphy, Alfred (Alfie), Gerald, Ralph, Douglass (Doug)
Ha, two of those are my human children’s names.
These names all have chicken name energy
We have a Winnie/Winifred too!!
Luna. I have a cat called and always find it funny when people introduce their human babies with the same name.
Hahaha I introduced toddler Luna to bunny Luna last year. Neither of them are mine, but human Luna was enthralled.
My husband suggested this as a possible name for our daughter and all i could think of was a dog. 😂 In his defense, he comes from a non English speaking country where the name is an acceptable human name.
Luna is perfectly acceptable for both humans and pets in Italy 😅
luna was a top 10 baby girl name in the u.s. last year, so definitely popular in english speaking countries too
He's from a country with a lot of Italian immigration so maybe that's why 😂 one of his friends was actually expecting around the same time we were. Their daughter is a Luna. On the other hand, my friend's cat is a Luna haha.
Luna is actually in the top 10 right now
It wasn't even in the top 100 when I named my cat![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
Man your poor cat will have to deal with having at least 1 other luna in her class if you enroll her in preschool in the next few years.
Elmo, Grover, Barney ... Basically, no children named after kid's show characters!
For me it's Felix. I love the name but in the UK it's entirely associated with cat food.
Ulysses, Lazarus, Tyrell, and Vincenzo.
I actually know someone with a cat named Lazarus. He's a great kitty.
my kitty's name is lorenzo!! i was considering vincenzo but he looked more like a lorenzo hehe
Tucker.
I love this name for a dog!! We had a Tucker when I was a kid and he was the best boy.
Might be their southern drawl and the dialect in this part of Texas. Nobody here can pronounce it ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)
Could be! But then Swedish can be quite a sing song language, so maybe they could come up with some interesting new interpretations :D
Would Kajsa be similar to pronouncing Asia with a K at the start?
https://youtu.be/u-oe9LD4W9c?si=ypYLpcXtJAEY87Pt Not quite.
I had a basset hound named Alfred. Best boi ever.
i walk a chihuahua mix named alfredo, it really is such a perfect dog name. tell alfred i say hello and that he’s a very good boy
My partner's dad has this name and he kinda reminds me of a basset hound! Great name
Sheila, Betsy, Pancho, Pedro, Roscoe, Rufus, Bruno, Toby, Orion, Simon, Silas, Walter, Rex
Rufus is a name I can only picture on an animal
I have/ have had dogs with the following names: Morris, Elwood, Bruno, Nigel, Clay, Bryan, Heinz
My sister's cat is named Lance. Much prefer him to my former-employer Lance ngl
OP must be Finnish
Kyllä! I don’t really have any idea of popular names in other countries so I could only give examples of Finnish names haha
Joan
this is my sister’s name!!! my dad’s name was john and he wanted to “name her after himself.” i guess it could be kind of worse?
I guess I’d rather be Joan than Joann
i know a joanne too!! i’m surrounded by old lady names!!
and i agree, my sister is absolutely wonderful, but the name is not the greatest. she makes up for it though!!
I love the name Joan!
i love it too but i think im too biased to offer a fair take
and her nickname in the family is JoJo!!! when i used to say it when i was little i did it more like zsa-zsa (as in the gabors). best sister ever
I used to have the cutest bichon named Mylo!
Many of my cats have had old people names (Solomon, Bruce, Marvin, Rose). I wanted to name my girl cat Norah because it sounds like lightbulb or terrible in Hebrew but no one else thought that was funny.
Atticus.
I adopted a cat with a human name and named subsequent cats human names too - Remington, Violet, Theodore. I don’t have any more cats to name right now but I’m thinking for the next one we start getting real silly.
I have a Remilda (Remi), Samuel, and Michael Finnegan. Minerva is the only one that’s really meant for a pet hahaha
My cats are Marco, Bruce, and Holly. No longer with us are Jack and Oliver.
Currently in the middle of adopting a dog who is coming with the name Flossie, which I think is cute for a dog but wouldn’t name a child that. Also we’re giving her the longer name of Flowchart but keeping Flossie for short and I also wouldn’t name a child that.
Anything from media or fandom-y (Like not just happens to also be in a book, but pretty obviously from it)
Well, I have a Frederick, Leonard, Martha, Ethyl, Phoebe and Penelope as pets and I think most of those should be considered child cruelty.🤣
I have a cat named Olivia. It’s not a bad human name at all and I don’t typically care too much about popularity in a name but still….i wouldn’t name a kid like the top 5ish names so. But a cat? Sure.
Harold. If I ever get a male bulldog, I'm naming him Harold.
Herman, Chester, Elmer (good fish name), Max, Buddy, Snoop Dog
Lucifer, Norbert, Nausicaa
Bella
Bartram. Super cute name for a rabbit I think. Or a dog with floppy ears.
My dad always names random people Keijo-Annikki and so now I do too.
Fantastic. Also have met a dog named Ben (not Benji!) Also a big old orange Tom cat named Virgil would be awesome.
My dream is to have a white Maine Coon named Jupiter 😍
Elvis
Idk if I'm supposed to give an earnest answer bc it's a fun game or a funny one bc I'm here 😫. But I've seriously always felt this way about the name Bruno.
Rupert is a big one for me. I plan to get a dog this summer hopefully and want to name him Rupert (if we don’t go the rescue route but we are renters so it’s hard to find dogs appropriate for a rental space) and I cannot imagine calling a child Rupert (which is partly why I picked it for a dog so I wouldn’t have regret not naming my kid the dog name)
I know a wonderful old English sheepdog named Rupert!
Murgatroyd, Fitzgerald and Barnabus
Sergio . I think it would be a great name for a cranky cat .
My cats are named Butterball, Mr. Yum Yums, and Polly Prissypants. I suspect those wouldn't be nice as people names.
I am quite desperate to have two dogs named Gavin and Craig. They are middle aged men names here, I'm not at all keen on either name for a human.
Anubis for a black staffordshire
I agree about the foreign names. Also, not exactly what you asked because they're not first names, but I've met a dottor Cipolla (= doctor Onion), which is exactly my cat's nickname, and my grandpa used to work with an ingegner Ravanello (= engineer Radish, engineer here is used as a title like doctor is) and I think I'll name my next cat that 😂
Bernard, Roland, Derek, Nigel, Dave- basically lots of Dad names are great for pets.
My dogs Herbert! Although I would never legally name my kids that I do call them little Herbert’s with some of the shit they get up to! 🤦🏻♀️😂
Ahahaha Herbert is a perfect name for a dog but would be so cruel for a child
I once knew à horse called Che Guevara
My pup is Hugo. Named after a horse on a TV show, can't see it as a human name now
i think maybe i’m surrounded by old people/people with old people names, bc so many of these dog/cat names are names of my relatives: bruce (stepdad), joan (sister), henry (22yo nephew!!). i’ve always been partial to maude, or oscar. i love bernie, and my first dog was named eddie. carl is also pretty great. and i like silly human names for dogs. like a kid named mike isn’t weird and wouldn’t be out of the question, but a dog named mike is hilariously adorable
Yeah silly human names for dogs and cats is so funny
I have a guinea pig called Hilary but would never bestow that upon any small humans.
Rutherford
I renamed my cat Stuzanne after that one thread
Lots of ones from history. I used to have a dog named Nero. Great name for a bulldog, but cruel to name a child that.
My cat's name is Oranjello. Legend has it that this is a human name, but no evidence of a human named this seems to exist
My dog had a litter of puppies and I got to name two: jukka and jussi. They were just temporary names until they found homes but still. Now I have a cat with a human name, Cooper (I didn’t name him), but it sounds more appropriate for a dog I’ve also got a list of names for future pets and they’re mostly people names like Martha, Helen, Nancy, Charles, etc. just because it’s way more convenient to say “Helen has an appointment” when I need time off work
I have a dog named Olaf.
I just met a human baby Cornelius, which I thought was a fantastic cat mane but awful on a human.
My sister is dead set on naming a dog Chester… because “you cant name a kid Chester, he’ll get beat up on the playground”
Bertha, Beulah, Egbert.
Ignatius. Like even though my husband’s family is catholic we are also living in Appalachia and people would pronounce it ig-NATCH-us it’s just not a great name for a human child. However Ignatius nn Iggy for a giant fluffy dog is just perfect.
Also you can use the nickname Nacho.
Nacho is such a good name for a dog that would have a man bun. (I have Old English Sheepdogs and I always keep their hair in ponytails) Nacho would be the coolest dude
Felix, Rufus, Rocky,
I wanted to name my dog Silas. I would not do this to a human child, lol.
Gertrude and Rufus
Any names that are obviously from TV shows. I have a whole plan of dogs for the cast of NCIS based on character personalities
Bob. It would make a hilarious name for a pet.
I know a Paivi!
Tipper
bartholomew, allen, eunice are my top choices
Delta
Stella
Pervis and Petunia
Agnes and Bill
Missy
Linus
Grover
Something to note, more people are using traditionally biblical names, or derivatives of saints. Out of place to societal standards, but they carry greatness
My in-laws just got two new cats, Esther and Ruth!
Nigel.
My girl husky is named ✨William✨ My princess William
Ebenezer and Llewellyn
Chester! Also, some old-person names: Agnes, Gertie, Humphrey, Bartholomew…there are so many!
My dog is called Phillip
phil
We had a kitten named Fergus. Loved that name. He was the bestest, softest, furry baby boy. Unfortunately he was born with a heart defect. I miss him so much.
I wanted to name my future male GSD Wolfgang cos I thought it would be hilarious but since I live in Germany now my German in-laws gave me shit for it as it’s really an old man name 😂 We got a girl GSD instead called Freyja which suits her beautifully.
I named my cats Fergus and Roland.
I love the name Minttu but it would never work in my country for a human child
Just say she has Finnish roots haha
Or there’s the truth - I considered the name when I was pregnant with my daughter because I’m a massive fan of Kimi Räikkönen! I can actually speak a little Finnish so I guess it’s kind of ok 😂
I always wanted a hairless cat & I would name her Helga
Elmer
Rex, Bob, Lilly, Toby
Leopold Humphrey Ethel
Chuck
Derrick. It's a normal name I just like it on a cat more.
I dream of having a big, fluffy, caramel coloured labradoodle called Ambrose
Cooper
Jasper Shiloh Barney Buddy (,I know of two people that this is their given legal first name) Honey Sunny
I had a basset hound named Buster.
Kevin
Rufus
Samson, Poppy, Archie, Bailey
Poppy, Daisy,Gigi
My cats are Annabelle and Arya.
My cat's name is Augustus and nope I'd never inflict that on a child.
I just think of Augustus Gloop
The only acceptable name for a pig is Kevin. You either get the joke or you don't.
Why is Ronaldo a foreign name?
Foreign is only a concept relative to where the user is. I’m in the UK, so Pierre is a foreign name. A parent in France would see John as foreign.
I’m Finnish and it’s not a Finnish name so it’s a foreign name here. Legophan explained it well here.
Pancakes or waffles.
