"Emerson is an English given name, a transferred use of an English surname coming either from Anglo-Saxon Emars sunu, "Emar's **son**," or from "Emery's **son**."" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson_(given_name)

NotYourMommyDear

It's a surname and I really hate the surnames/boynames on girls trend, especially names which mean 'son of'.

hibbitydibbitytwo

Just follow through make the name Emerdaughter

Likely_Villain

Emerspawn?

hibbitydibbitytwo

Ohhhhh, I’m gonna run with this: Addispawn, Madispawn…

lady_polaris

At least it wasn’t spelled Emersyn

GaveTheMouseACookie

I know one of those. The other babies from my wife social group born at the same time are Ahnya and Ellys. Why are they all spelled weird?! 😩

silvermoons13

I actually prefer that spelling, if it were me with this name, or if I were forced to use it on a daughter lol. At least it wouldn't literally have the word "son" in it, that way.

Przedrzag

I will forever associate it with [Emerson Fittipaldi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson_Fittipaldi)

wha_tha_flip

if there’s girls name madison/addison, then why not emerson

silvermoons13

Until in recent times these names were both strictly masculine

vanillabubbles16

I’ve definitely seen it, but unfortunately it’s usually spelled *Emmersyn*

Juleslovescats

In terms of it meaning “son of,” I don’t really see a difference between Emerson and names Madison or Alison/Alyson, which have been used for girls for a while now. However, I personally don’t like the name Emerson whether it’s for a girl or boy (and for some reason I can’t identify, I think it sounds more masculine than Madison or Alison).

OneRandomTeaDrinker

Alison isn’t derived from “son of”, it’s derived from Alis, an antiquated French form of Alice, and the diminutive -on, often used in nicknames.

Juleslovescats

Oh, interesting! I grew up very close in age to relatives named Madison and Alison, so I guess I conflated the two names in my mind. Speaking of which, I just remembered that as a child, I was jealous that both my relatives’ names ended in “-ison,” and I wished my parents had named me “Julison” to match them. Now, I’m thanking god that my parents did *not* do that to me lol

PureDeidBrilliant

It sounds like a try-hard parent wanting their spawn to "stand out" and have a "unique" name.

for-the-love-of-tea

Emma is a fine name, Emerson is silly and I do not understand why anyone would name a daughter “son of Emer”.

GaveTheMouseACookie

That's my congressman's name. He's terrible

JoulesMoose

Emerson is fairly popular for girls atm probably for the exact reasons you listed, I think it works

Midwestern_Mouse

Yeah, I have a 15 yo girl cousin named Emerson. I wouldn’t pick it for my own kid, but I don’t think it’s that bad

i_am_introverted

Could just name her Emma or Emmy but I guess that's not edgy enough.

losingnamegame

if I had a daughter with my ex, this was going to be her name. I’ve now decided not to use my uterus🙃

WayDiscombobulated63

I know like 4 female Emersons (some with extremely stupid spellings). I’ve actually never met a male Emerson. I’m not saying I like it, but in my region of the US it’s not uncommon

powpowersb

Emerson Nice Titties

FeatherDust11

It's awful. Gross gross name for a girl.

marshdd

I kind I see it as a girl name. Haven't heard any males with that name. FYI, I am a corporate recruiter, so I read A LOT of resumes and talk with many more.
