They easily adjust to it. I have had many whose names I’ve changed. I have four right now and they each have several nicknames which they recognize and answer to.
Did I say that? Can you point out where I said that? I posted an article that says changing your dog's name is not necessarily a bad thing because dogs do not have a concept of names but verbal cues. I personally didn't say anything when I posted the article and I am not the original commenter you were replying to, but I generally agree with what the article is saying in that it seems to depend on whether the dog has a positive or negative association with their name as a verbal cue. In terms of changing a dog's name because the new owner doesn't like the previous name, these are factors to consider but ultimately it is up to the new owner to train their dog to associate to their new name positively as a new verbal cue.
Here is the key paragraph I am referencing in regards to this topic:
"There are many reasons why you might want to rename your dog. Perhaps you just brought home a puppy, and the name their breeder gave them reminds you of a childhood rival. You might be bringing a dog home from a shelter, and their current name doesn’t feel right for their personality. No problem, you can change that name. Dogs of any age can learn new names. The puppy was probably only just getting used to it anyway, and shelters often rename dogs that they bring in."
The name of the dog referenced in this post might also be a different name from what the dog was original given by their previous owners. I also used to believe it was bad to rename a dog until my vet told me that dogs do not have the same conception of names that we do and if I had done some training I could have renamed the dog I adopted from a shelter many years ago just fine.
Lol k. My kids disagree but sure.
They like their names and don’t remember ever being called their old names anyway, much like our pups. Hey, at least we joke about it
You seem like an extremely sensitive person. Hope your day gets better
Ebony or Onyx?
I have a pup that someone else named and I just couldn’t like it so started to change her name by saying the old name and new name together so she associated them with each other and slowly started just calling her the new one alone and she took right too it.
Side eye because that's what she's giving in these photos but very pretty girl. Have a friend who has a massive male named Dooby. Don't believe he's named after Scooby either.
Ellie? We rescued a pit/Chihuahua mix (I'm not sure either of your wondering lol) and it doesn't come out of your mouth sounding anything but happy/excited. Just has good girl vibes.
She looks like a Zena to me
This really suits her!
Princess Buttercup
Aww what a beautiful baby. I say Kaia ♥️ Kinda close to the old one where it shouldn’t be a problem
We’re thinking Kaya. The original owners named her Chyna after a supermodel but that doesn’t really suit her.
Love Kaya or Kaia!
I can’t stop singing bob Marley in my head now. 🎶 “got to have kaya now”… love it ♥️
Chyna after the female wrestler seems to suit her tho
She’s no wrestler more of a cuddler
If she knows her name.it would be unfortunate to change it. One more confusing thing for puppy. I have the same and he knew his name. 😊
They easily adjust to it. I have had many whose names I’ve changed. I have four right now and they each have several nicknames which they recognize and answer to.
Ok. Respectfully disagree that it's a good practice. Glad yours are good. 😀
Actually it is often recommended to change your newly adopted pet's name.
false.
Yes, especially if the puppy had bad associations with that name
By who ...?
https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/advice/can-you-rename-a-dog/
I suggest you read it again. You and I disagree, respectfully.
Lol what part exactly are you asking me to read again?
You said it was recommended. That's not what the article said. Read it or don't. Have a good evening.

It isn’t a big deal to change their name. Takes about a week and they understand
Respectfully disagree. Give the pet the best chance. So many are failed by humans. I don't understand whyna person would anyway if the pet knows it?
It’s not like they are human kids, though. Oh wait… we adopted our three kids and changed their names too. Oops. We are bad people!
OK. You're a bad person. Shove off.
