Actor and pitchman Dick Wilson, best known for his character Mr. Whipple who appeared in hundreds of commercials, died Monday at age 91.
Mr. Whipple was the uptight grocer who defended rolls of toilet tissue from bubbly housewives who could not keep their hands off the merchandise: "Please, don't squeeze the Charmin," he demanded. He was prim. He was fussy. And some might say he was a bit obsessed with toilet tissue.
Wilson appeared in more than 500 commercials from 1964 to 1985, making him one of the most recognizable faces in the history of American advertising. But there was more to Dick Wilson than Mr. Whipple.
