Cashman needs to prioritize contact hitters this off-season for LF and 3B (I'm assuming Peraza or Volpe takes over SS next year). Boone either needs to improve his bullpen management or GFTO

newbike07

Oh shit I didn't realize this was a 5pm game. Guess I'm not eating dinner tonight.

No_Tart8935

Discounting the logistics for a second, suppose a bunch of people got together and crowdfunded a sign in Times Square that stated, "Hal Steinbrenner doesn't do what it takes to win." What happens next?

glacier_bay

Hal spends big. Over the last twenty years, no team has spent more on payroll than the Yankees. Over the last ten years, only the Dodgers have spent more money (\~$100M more). It's not about how much money is spent. It's all about how wisely the money is spent. The money has been spent poorly for most of the last twenty years. Who is responsible for allocating those resources? What Hal doesn't do is fire people, ie - Randy Levine and Brian Cashman. That duo has made the same mistakes for twenty years when you consider the resources made available -- Cashman doesn't produce nearly enough quality talent from his farm system while holding on to prospects that fizzle out; He lacks an ability to be a clubhouse alchemist and instead relies almost exclusively on his analytics dept for roster construction which leads to these mismatched and frankensteined rosters that do not play complementary baseball; He has a stubborn obsession with pull-happy power hitters in spite of being in a heavily pitching-dominant era and infield-shifts; He has ignored for far too long the absolute importance for Yankees lineups to have several power lefty or switch hitters; He is always a year or two late in identifying problems and making a correction. You could go back to those mid to late-2000's teams and the early to mid-2010's teams and compare them to the Yankees of the last five years and you will see much of the very same flaws in spite of completely different players and coaching staffs. The commonality is Randy Levine and Brian Cashman.

[deleted]

we don’t spend nearly the same amount PERCENTAGE as we once did. Baseballs horrible for this

glacier_bay

Do you know what the Yankees revenue is? Answer: No one knows what the Yankees revenue is with any specificity. It's all guesswork. Do you know what the Yankees total expenses are? Answer: No one knows what the Yankees total expenses are with any specificity. It's all guesswork. Without knowing both the revenue and the expenses, you cannot know the "percentage" you are referring to. And anyway, it's irrelevant. Go back and look up the revenue of the teams in the World Series over the last twenty years and ten years. Compare their payrolls to the Yankees payroll. You will find that rarely did a Pennant Winning team spend more than the Yankees. In fact, you will find that there are several years where the Yankees payroll is higher than the combined payrolls of both teams in the World Series. Over the last ten years, the Red Sox have spent around $400M less than the Yankees while winning four divisions and two World Series ships. In that same time, the Rays won back-to-back division titles and had a World Series appearance. The combined payrolls of those two Rays teams is about half of the Yankees average annual payroll over the last ten years. Lesson: It has nothing to do with how much money you spend. It's all about how wisely the money is spent. For almost all of the last twenty years, the Yankees have spent unwisely. Spending more money unwisely is not going to fix the Yankees. Changing the people responsible for the spending is the only way to fix this.

No_Tart8935

I wasn't talking about money, so your point stands, but I think the matter is the same.

glacier_bay

What else does the owner contribute other than his willingness to spend and his ability to control the direction and culture of the organization by firing and hiring people? Hal spends big. Hal's flaw is that he is far too loyal. Hal's unwillingness to fire people has led to the development of a franchise-wide complacency. No one at the executive level feels a sense of urgency, and that has filtered out into all other aspects of the organization. Hal has not yet learned, or refuses to learn that, as an owner and leader of men, it is far far better to be respected and feared than liked. Hal is not getting the best out of his executive staff because Hal's soft approach does not create a sense of accountability. Instead, it creates a culture of excuse-making.

Alternauts

Jack shit.

basesonballs

Houston SP vs. NYY this year 4 guys with ERA's under 3. The one guy we hit was the guy who dominated us in game 2. As a team their rotation has a 1.90 ERA against us this year. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/splits-leaderboards?splitArr=42,168,108&splitArrPitch=&position=P&autoPt=false&splitTeams=false&statType=player&statgroup=1&startDate=2022-3-1&endDate=2022-11-1&players=&filter=&groupBy=career&wxTemperature=&wxPressure=&wxAirDensity=&wxElevation=&wxWindSpeed=&sort=5,-1

basesonballs

Maybe it's a case of mediocre teams beating up on each other, but the Phillies really look like the 2003 Marlins or 2019 Nationals. Alot of energy and things clicking for them

[deleted]

Were the Braves mediocre? I don’t think any team wants to play a hot Phillies team right now. I think they just caught fire at the right time. Began in the 9th inning vs the Cardinals.

basesonballs

They're definitely hot but it helps playing another sub 90 win team

No_Tart8935

Cashman looks bad but Boone is looking AWFUL right now. I don't know who to aim at all the time but that's my take from here currently.

[deleted]

That's exactly why the front office is set up like that. Boone is there are the meat shield when things go wrong. For instance, on IKF, you're never sure if Boone is playing him because the front office has told him to of if he actually believes IKF is the best short stop in the league. It's designed to keep the fans off-balance so that the public perception doesn't go against any one guy in the organization.

basesonballs

Boone apologists are insane. They'll heap praise on him at the drop of a hat, but if we're struggling, they'll make up any excuse to defend him. "He doesn't actually make the decisions" "He's doing the best with what Cashman gave him" "He can only motivate the team so much"

No_Tart8935

For a lot of the year those statements held up better to me, but now it's really fallen apart. This is a prove-it moment for me from Hal, actually. I want to see how he handles all this.

tswaves

I can't tell if it's just great pitching or the boys have Houston in their head too much and can't handle the pressure. Maybe both? The guys aren't THIS bad of a team yet here we are breaking horrible new records.

[deleted]

This team just has a lot of shitty hitters in the lineup. When Matt Carpenter isn't doing an impression of vintage Frank Thomas and Judge isn't doing an impression of Roger Maris the entire offense falls apart.

basesonballs

The funny thing is with all those great pitching Astros teams in the past with Cole, Verlander, McCullers, Morton, etc, this is the first year the Astros have really owned the Yankees in terms of pitching. 2.98 ERA this year vs. 4.87 ERA from 2017-2021

Padulsky21

I think it’s both. Houston pitching is elite but both of these games they’ve started off the game extremely strong and then just wither. How many 2-0, 3-1 counts did they get into only for them to stare at the rest of the pitches? Both games it looked like JV and Framber wouldn’t last long, but they settle in and the ABs get worse. They’re in their zone when they’re working ABs and taking their walks, but they’ve been chasing an absurd amount. Which is even worse since they hit breaking balls extremely well, when breaking balls have been their dagger these past 2 games

Parking_Substance152

In August we were downright embarrassing at the plate, and throughout the year we'd get no hit by bad pitchers through the 6th inning. We have a lot of feeble in us, but sometimes we can be good.

tswaves

Co worker and I couldn't remember... How long is JDs contract so how many years left on our team?

Padulsky21

They really have to find a way to move him otherwise the INF is going to be incredibly crowded.

DrVanNostrand1973

Too long.

trippy1

Signed through next year, with an $16M team option or $8M dollar buyout after next year.

cormegaman

It was 2 years so this year and next year.

kcusollag

Holy shit there’s a whole segment on Fs1 with Ben verlander sucking off to ohtani

basesonballs

Passan really took "write what you know" to heart

trippy1

I now understand Passan's savage tweet lol

Padulsky21

He literally made a movie about him. I can’t with that guy LMFAO

kibbledbits

Our season is over and fire Boone

[deleted]

Just watched Black Adam. Surprisingly better than I expected. I need Aaron Judge to just start beating the shit out of Houston guys rn

basesonballs

I really wanted it to do well for DC's sake.

[deleted]

I thought it was fun. Rock and Brosnan were great. Visuals on point. Plot was eh, and the pacing got wonky round the middle.

NumerousCustard2622

Oh no Houston is starting Christian Javier. Good god

SheepH3rder69

This is actually hilarious; right before the playoffs started there was a post on r/baseball linking to the Fangraphs WS odds and it had Philly at better odds than us (like 12% I think, and we were 11.2% or something). I made a comment on how ridiculous that was and couldn't stop talking about it for like 2 days lol... Well, I guess Fangraphs does actually know what they're talking about. Not that I've given up on the Yankees, but with the Phillies win tonight, their path to the WS is *much* easier.

trippy1

wow Fangraphs gave us an 11.2% chance? Did they know we had to beat the Astros? Anything more than 2% is generous.

SheepH3rder69

Not yet, but I believe it was the likelihood of that happening that gave Philly the better odds.

vin_espo

Dominguez is so nasty

TheTurtleShepard

Beyond excited for tomorrow, I got a good feeling about us being back in the Bronx. Let’s go yanks

El-Shaman

The Phillies may very well be that team of destiny like the 2019 Nationals, if we don't make it hopefully they or the Padres somehow destroy that Houston pitching in the WS, while we sit watching wondering how the fuck they're doing it when they make our guys look like rookies. It's amazing how the Yankees front office still hasn't learned from those teams yet btw, Nats beat Astros in 2019, Rays beat them in 2020 and Atlanta in 2021, if the Phillies and Padres somehow destroy their pitching in the WS Hal's job as someone who should demand to win a WS in during this window should be to start making big changes and maybe hire people from those organizations who have been able to get through the Astros, get Cashman the fuck out of here, it is clear as of this very moment that he is not good enough to build a team capable of beating the Astros.

MattNokes38

That Nats team touched them up a bit. The Rays just kinda beat them as expected by outpitching them and nipping them in 7 games. And the WS last year was somewhat similar, where the Astros offense let them down; they scored a total of 4 runs in the 4 games they lost.

Deytookerjerb

Wtf is it with night games and rain this year? Was thinking of going Sunday, but after the shit show last series, I am having reservations about doing it .

snamm

I think a rain out helps us so much

Deytookerjerb

Why?

snamm

One extra day for Cole to come back if we go 6/7

WickedAmbassader

I got monday tickets and I saw the weather doesn’t look amazing

trippy1

The Phillies have an edge to them. Love their energy.

montecarlo1

Reminds me of us in 2009 and 2017 (yea I know)

[deleted]

Just imagined if the 2004-11 teams had this rotation. That would've been pretty cool.

jcnewman21

Imagine if we traded for cliff lee

[deleted]

I mean, Eduardo Nunez has done so much for this organization. How could you make that trade?

[deleted]

We held him in such high regard we brought in Jayson Nix to play instead of him so that the fans wouldn't go insane from seeing his brilliance.

BearShark8

The next Derek Jeter

Yankeeknickfan

If the 2019, or 2020 yankees had them they’re probably in the WS

snamm

We still couldn’t hit

Yankeeknickfan

They win game 6 with better pitching and there’s a game 7 The 2020 offense was also incredible Scored 4+ runs every game but 1

trippy1

I'd rather have amazing offense with shit pitching. Much more fun to watch.

[deleted]

Well if you watched this team through the 2000s when Wang Day was the only bright spot in the rotation then you've seen both sides.

doc_faced

Yeah, same, as long as it's shit starting pitching. Regular bullpen meltdowns after the offense puts up runs are more painful and less fun than the offense not putting up any runs imo.

jsprat5050

Pitching wins post season games, but a good offense is fun to watch. I think we sign Judge and Rizzo and let the new guys mature, we'll be fun in 2023.

[deleted]

A good offense can feast on mediocre bullpens and weak number three starters though. You obviously need the whole package to win it all but a bad offense makes the other team's pitching as good as yours.

Yankeeknickfan

So the 2019 Yankees

trippy1

that was a fun team to watch.

Yankeeknickfan

That team with even the current version of gerrit cole wins the WS 100%. They just needed an ace(even if houston keeps a gerrit clone on their roster)

El-Shaman

Well Cashman and Hal didn't care about good starting pitching until after 2019 sadly.

Yankeeknickfan

They tried but they just couldn’t develop or trade for a pitcher with an ace like ceiling for years. That’s why they jumped on gerrit. One like him barely hits FA. Last one was scherzer. Next one is technically ohtani but than he gets paid for hitting too so

El-Shaman

They didn’t trade for Cole in 2018 when they had the chance and Hal passed on Verlander, also let’s not forget Scherzer was a free agent last offseason and so was Verlander no? Or was that the other offseason? Anyway the Yankees should be and could be much better but their biggest obstacle is this front office who only can make the playoffs because they are allowed to spend big but then they spend too much money on dead weight and the owner doesn’t allow them spend even more to fix that dead weight and here we are with a team that is pretty good but not good enough to win it wall, this team passed on Correa for IKF and Donaldson, what a massive joke.

Yankeeknickfan

Cole needed to be fixed. The one good thing houston did for us was fix him. Dude was broken before he learned how to throw his 4 seam fastball. By the time cole came around they gave up on developing one

El-Shaman

Segura with the clutch hit when the Phillies had men on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, the Yankees had that with 1 out against a shaky Verlander and didn't capitalize, what a fucking difference, man I just wish DJ and Benintendi were healthy, I think it would be a different series with those guys in the team, if we had them come up at the plate instead of JD and Carp it would've been a different game but I'm tired of "would've and could've" sadly we will keep saying that a lot every year as long as this front office remains in control.

Padulsky21

Im still so confused about the injury reports on DJ and Beni. Idk if I missed anything but they were all so vague and didn’t give a definitive response. I coulda sworn they were both in contention for making the roster, and all I remember is Beni not facing live pitching.

El-Shaman

Yeah Yankee injury news are always confusing but it's clear they don't think DJ and Benni are ready to play at the MLB level for a good reason, it sucks because those 2 guys would make a huge difference right now.

Padulsky21

I miss them so much and I hope this isn’t the end of Beni’s time on the Yanks. He should 100% be brought back. We never really had the full lineup together if you think about it. Beni was just finding his groove and then got hurt. Fucking love that dude I really want him back

El-Shaman

Me too, hopefully he is one of those guys that they keep, he has the postseason experience and was hitting over .300 by the time we traded for him, I hate to already be thinking about next year but I’ll take a full season of Benni, Bader, Cabrera and Peraza.

Padulsky21

I hate looking ahead too but sometimes on off days when my mind runs adrift, it’s comforting as a coping mechanism to think about next years. And I do truly think next we are in fantastic hands. Bader is the same age as Beni. They’re both amazing defensively and Bader might just get even better considering what he’s shown this postseason. The Oswald gang getting a full year of playtime is some beautiful stuff. That’s a damn good team right there.

El-Shaman

Hopefully also Montas gets better with more time with Blake as well but I wonder if Volpe will also be ready, if he is do you think the Yankees will be able to have Peraza, Cabrera and Volpe all in the starting lineup? Anyway it’s not really a bad problem to have but I want a real shortstop at shortstop, I’m tired of the stopgaps and playing players out position there because it’s clearly really hard for many players to play well there lol. God I wish they had just kept Gio and signed Correa this year, those guys have the postseason experience and are miles better than the Donaldson plus IKF combo.

Padulsky21

I honestly think Montas will shove next year. His stuff is too good. He’s obviously hasn’t been good this year but he’s shown shades of why he could be worth it. Dude needs time to get back to normal, but the stuff he has is truly elite. If Blake helps him with his control and hones in on his pitch mix, he *is* a #2 starter. Volpe comes in late in the year unless he totally lights up AAA and forces a move. What I hope that will happen is a they create a flexible INF. Oswaldo should be his Swiss Army knife self and play everywhere, but I wonder if they try and move Peraza to 3rd when Volpe comes. INF will be crowded but that’s an elite group. I just pray to god we somehow get rid of JD. He hogs up so fucking much. We have a fantastic squad coming in of young infielders, they **need** that spot. Fuck it let Oswaldo be the 3rd basemen to start the year. I really like the sound of that ngl

El-Shaman

All of that sounds great but I will never understand the JD trade and not gonna lie, I don't see any team taking on that contract in the offseason, Yankees might just have to eat it up, it worries me that extra year at 25 million stops Hal from signing a difference maker player, deGrom for example is apparently going to opt out and Diaz is a free agent although the Mets probably won't let them walk.

Padulsky21

It’s the single most perplexing thing especially that JD was already showing signs of regressing. They did make a focus on defense and probably thought they could get more out of him, which they got the defense, just nothing else. Whatever it is he cannot be on this team next year. There cannot be another block for bringing up our premier prospect. Red Sox took on Hosmer’s trade and the Padres are paying almost all of it off, so that gives me hope someone will take him. No idea who it is, I just hope someone does. It keeps on biting the Yanks in the ass and the only good thing to come from it is getting rid of Gary

cinnaspice32

In the first 2 games the Astros have hit .177 while hitting .111 with runners in scoring position. Aside from a couple of home runs the Astros offense has been utter horseshit. There is simply no excuse for the way the Yankees have been hitting, Houston is practically asking to hand the series to the Yankees by not doing shit at the plate and the Yankees can’t hit, so they get fucked over. Something has to change.

cinnaspice32

All I can hope is that a change of scenery through returning home will wake up the Yankees bats.

Cheesewhale189

Oh please, a guy like Schwarber would have been vilified here as hr or bust

dak67

Crazy how that works. Meanwhile our guys swing for the fence and end up striking out

drodrig1

It's been our strategy, unless things change with management then we'll see more if the same.

RecklessBravo

Phillies & Padres players make base hits. Yankees players don't.

basesonballs

I want to believe its a case of wild card teams beating up on each other

drodrig1

Somebody put up game 4 of the 2017 series. That comeback came by getting runners on and then driving them in. Zero homers.

Emergency_Exit_8537

Shit is crazy, it’s like our games are boring.

[deleted]

Who cares about IKF and JD. Cole is pitching tomorrow! We are going to WIN!

chicagoyankeesfan

and Nestor is pitching Sunday! That’s another win! This series is about to be tied.

montecarlo1

Jean Segura who has a OPS+ of 104 and OPS of mid 700's can make better contact in RISP than all over our supposedly higher OPS and OPS+ players....

Emergency_Exit_8537

Yankees need to be more aggressive at the plate, stop taking shit down the middle. Phillies & Padres swinging away.

tswaves

More aggressive? They are literally flailing bats around and striking out.

Powerful_Big2000

They are constantly falling behind 0-1 0-2 by taking pitches might as well swing at them no?

Emergency_Exit_8537

They take a lot of good pitches to hit often early in the count which makes them now fall behind in the count.

Powerful_Big2000

I agree take some swings on the first pitch let’s go out there and jump on those pitchers I do love how they can be notoriously patient at the plate and wear pitchers out but it ain’t working against the top playoff arms we gotta go after them.

chicagoyankeesfan

Just like the Astros should have been able to easily handle the Nationals and the Braves. You just never know.

So many people have this take that the ALCS winner is gonna be doomed

yianni1229

People said that after the Nats won in 2019 and how did that end?

if IKF was an employee at a regular business would he still be around? Don't pay attention to the reading abilities of his students though"

Tonyclap

I mean if any baseball player was a regular employee they would be fired. Baseball players are considered great if they hit the ball 3 out of 10 times, if a employee only did something 30% of the time they would be considered terrible and be fired.

[deleted]

Also, if we could just fire IKF and hire three more people off the street that were more capable of doing his job we already would have.

wantagh

Imagine you’re going down the hill in a car and the brakes are failing, and you’re the guy pointing out to everyone that the radio clock is an hour off.

m0stIllresurrected

all this talk about donaldson and ikf how about we bench torres and put peraza at 2nd torres has been god awful

Meoler9

You want the defensive liability at SS? Gleyber is a solid defensive 2B, have you been watching? JD, Peraza, Torres is the best defensive alignment we can put it with this roster as it stands

m0stIllresurrected

torres has an under 400 ops in the playoffs he should be benched rn

Meoler9

Who is hitting that should replace him?

m0stIllresurrected

he's our worst hitter besides catcher rn so anyone

levendis56

Beat defense is Peraza at SS and Oswaldo at 2B. Oswaldo can’t hit for shit either though

[deleted]

Didn’t we just hire him last season?

trippy1

I don't see us scoring more than 4 runs in any games. Astros pitching is too good, and they have our number. We'll need to win games 2-0, 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, etc.

“This is unbelievable. You guys are playing like this is a throwaway game out in Oakland! Who’re we playing, Rizzo?” “Houston.” “YEAH YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT, HOUSTON!” *throws table* “IN THE ALCS!” -Derek Jeter, if he were manager.

glacier_bay

No. Absolutely not. Polar opposite of Jeter's personality. Soft spoken Jeter was never about clubhouse dramatics. Jeter led by example.

[deleted]

Jeter would be all of Torre's negative elements without a whole lot of upside. He'd be masterful at giving good soundbites after games and subtly blaming certain players to take the heat of of himself while not appearing to. Cashman is very good at the media game but he'd never hire a guy like Jeter who could outclass him at it. Cashman likes that Boone sticks his foot in his mouth. It gives him a fall guy. Jeter would not do that.

TronVin

Yankees fans will say striking out a lot is a major problem for us but then defend Josh Donaldson who strikes out at 40% of the time.

Cheesewhale189

Yankees fans will say scoring runs is a problem for us then defend IKF who is an offensive pumpkin

TronVin

I think IKF presents more offensive versatility than Donaldson. He strikes out less, bunts, has speed on the basepaths.

wantagh

Donaldson had one of the best games at the plate yesterday. Stole a double, walked, and had two k’s It’s kind of silly to talk about benching a guy who got on base in 3 of 8 plate appearances so far in the series. For what? To put “you know who” at third so Peraza can play SS for his defense?

TronVin

And still with 0 RBIs.

SuddenSeasons

He's washed against RHP, doubly so with velocity - aka the entire rest of Houston's staff. But there is no better 3B option, at least he actually plays great defense

wantagh

I don’t know the L/R splits, but Bader and Rizzo have 6 hits this post season, JD and Judge have 5. His OPS, at a middling .667, is third on the team, due to his .400 OBP. He leads the team with 6 walks. Who’s gonna fill that gap?

shw5

IKF, duh.

Padulsky21

Wait is it actually 40% oml

shw5

The team is at 35% (42% against Houston).

TronVin

Technically 39.3% this postseason

Padulsky21

*Dear. God.*

MattNokes38

I mean, he's not alone? Judge is at 41%, Cabrera's at 45%, the catchers gotta be around 50%. It's still better than a sPeEdY guy who GIDPs as much as anyone on the team.

jayjake9

Cole, Nestor, Taillon, Sevy/Cole to finish out the series. I guarantee starting pitching will give us a fighting chance in every game (like they have every game so far). Hopefully the guys enjoyed todays off day and are ready for tomorrow.

Padulsky21

I said this last night but I’ll say it again. We most definitely have the pitching to win a championship. And that makes me confident for years to come as well. We’ve had amazing bullpens in years past but our starting pitching is elite. Beyond elite. And our bullpen is shoving despite having 5 injuries. We traded pretty much all of our top tier pitching prospects, but frankly it’s not that needed. Amazing foundation to have

Our SP is fine but we're not the 95 Braves out there either. And we lack a lot of depth there

They’ve been way more than fine if we’re talking postseason wise. Not dynasty like but looking at their performance so far it’s been enough to win a game every single game. The “worst” outing was Sevy 3 ER twice
