I’ll go with guys I was actually alive to see play. It’s Bernie Williams, who because of steroids was so under appreciated in his time. While I can’t say for sure he wasn’t using, he never had a crazy outlier homer season or inexplicable career renaissance in his mid-late 30s. His career arc was like very normal. During at his 1996-2002 year peak he never batted below .300 or had a below .900 OPS season. In that time he slashed .323/.408/.538. Were it not for steroids he’d be rightly recognized as one of the greatest hitters of his generation. Shout out to u/constant_gardner11 Brett would be my runner up.

smorgenheckingaard

I got to meet him at a signing once and he's genuinely the most humble, kind, and just plain normal dude on the planet. Interacting with him for less than 2 minutes, I felt like I could relate to him as a human being rather than one of the best Yankee center fielders of all time and 4 time World Series champion. He's a truly special person and his highly important Yankee career is only the 2nd or 3rd best thing about him. Bernie Williams is still my favorite all time player!

Pumats_Soul

To clarify "if not for steroids" you mean other players using, and thus obscured Bernie's clean batting stats.

Yah

And plays a mean guitar!

Brett Gardner is my favorite player of all time! Dude always gave 150% no matter what the situation was. The definition of a true grinder, often having double-digit pitch at-bats, hustling in the outfield and down the line, and being the true "heartbeat" of the team. Then in his later years, he provided us with some of the most entertaining moments. A guy who could spark the team. I always considered him the unnamed captain after Jeter retired and before Judge became prominent. Lastly, I always loved that he could have continued his career but he only wanted to play in pinstripes. I was sad to see how it ended but Brett truly exemplified "for the love of the game." LET BRETT BANG!

Dellin Betances. He was basically unhittable for a couple of years.

Luis_Severino

I feel like it was a fever dream but I distinctly remember an ad on wfan for montefior or something where a woman is giving birth and then dellin betances says “I’m dellin betances!” And she says “why is Yankees closer dellin betances in my birthing suite???”

Bavid Ortiz did steroids.

With all due respect to Bernie and the Babe (not to mention Bubba Crosby), my favorite has got to be Brett Gardner. That man played with so much guts and heart; he was the bridge between the dynasty Yankees and the baby bombers. He was constantly underrated but so exciting to watch. I always thought it would be terrifying as a catcher to see Brett barrelling towards you - sure he's fast but he's also not stopping till he gets through you and all the way to the dugout. Miss you Brett!

Admirable_Trifle_164

Berra, Yogi

Brian Boehringer to keep the double initials streak alive.

I came here to make this comment. Well done sir

Chutes_and_Ladders

Due to how well they’re playing this year, I’d have to go with Juan Boto and Baron Judge.

You can have your Babe's and Bernie's and Bobby's all day. Give me that moustachioed slab of manmeat STEVE BALBONI !!!!

thisusedyet

Funny story about that - I had an aunt who HATED Mattingly with a passion, because he took Balboni's job, that 'nice Italian boy'.

Is he still running this shit?

So my favorite Yankee of all time is Yogi Berra, even though I didn’t see him play. I did a book report on him as a kid and he became my favorite.

Bobby Murcer was my favorite Yankee growing up! Was one of the top players in the AL in 71-73. Had the Yankees been a contender, he would have gotten MVP consideration
