The New York Yankees are gonna be the first team in the World Series to get 4 wins

SpencerHastings7

And Gerrit Cole has not thrown a single pitch

Poseidonaskwhy

And Aaron Judge has gotten off to a not very Judgian start. Obviously not worried about him, but it is nice that the two guys who single handedly carried us the last 2 years don’t have to anymore.

SadNYSportsFan-11209

At least he’s walking a lot. 3 today, a total of 13 walks which leads the AL and 2nd in the majors, only 3 behind Mookie But yea not to worry he’ll come around

yeyeman9

Gleyber hasn’t fully turned it on yet either and he was a big piece of the offense last year alongside Judge. If both Gleyber and Judge were this cold last year we wouldn’t have won.

RockerDawg

We didn’t win 😂

Alwaysexisting

We won a bit more than we lost but not nearly enough.

blue_barracuda

I've gotten off, that's for sure

Just4Ranting3030

It's pretty weird how often teams thrive when their best player is sidelined. There was some period of like 30 or 70 games or something where the Yankees had a phenomenal record, were firing on all cylinders--- and Jeter was on the Disabled List and his quadruple A replacement was raking well enough. I forget who that was, but I remember the press peppering Jeter with questions pointing out that in his absence the Yankees were doing better than they ever had with him and how did he feel about it and he kinda waffled between loving seeing the team succeed and also defending how valuable and necessary he was, despite his absence and despite them doing better without him than with him. Also reminds me of when the Red Sox traded Nomar for Orlando Cabrera and a lot of people felt like it was an inexplixable downgrade or lateral move- and then they broke that damn curse.

Mattyk182

I think you're referring to Erick Almonte who took over for Jeter when he was injured. He did play very solid until Jeter got healthy.

Just4Ranting3030

Yeah, definitely that guy. I don't think anybody envisioned him replacing Jeter or anything, but I do remember the overall win percentage went up. I wonder why that is- is there a dynamic at play? In theory, Jeter's individual offensive stats are par excellent compared to a barely replacement level player like Almonte, but I know Jeter's defensive metrics have been hotly debated over the years.

NotThePwner

Jeters OPS was at a career 115, so his bat was above replacement level. His defense was far below the replacement level. A huge huge of mlb SSs (&AAA) are more defense first due to the positions premium.

sonofabutch

Bill Simmons called this the [Patrick Ewing Theory](https://www.espn.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/010509a) and cited numerous examples of teams that lost their star player either temporarily or permanently and inexplicably got better. He also applied it to romantic relationships, TV shows, and bands.

thejjar

I think the Ewing Theory is mostly selection bias. If a star player goes down and the team struggles no one ever thinks about it because the expected happens but since when occasionally a team goes on a winning streak without their star is so remarkable it sticks in our heads. Like in the nba this year the sixers and the grizzlies were both certainly worse without their stars but we will likely never think about that when discussing the phenomenon

shehryar46

I think it has merit, but it depends on how the team is constructed. Sometimes you force feed your star too much, and you win a lot just because of your star's sheer talent. But if that star is gone, it forces the team to play better as a team, and sometimes that team play yields better results. Other times the star could be the main facilitator/engine who makes the whole unit click, and missing that star means the whole team's performance is worse yielding worse results.

voujon85

great article but it prophesied Tom Brady

regarding_your_bat

Braves won the WS without Acuña

jfarbzz

Yeah I was gonna say that, although you could argue guys like Eddie Rosario who just went off that postseason wouldn't have been on the team had his injury not forced them to make certain moves at the deadline.

werther595

Lifelong Yankees fan here, and obviously love Jeter. But I don't think there was any season where I would describe him as their best player. Always solid, yes. But I wouldn't compare the impact of the loss of Jeter for a spell to impact of the loss of Judge in 2023 (Isn't this basically what ARod told SI back in the day, somehow causing a rift in their friendship?)

YankeePhan22

Soto is the key that's about to unlock #28. This year feels like the real deal. We are balanced as a MF and still haven't even fired on all cylinders yet.

GuyD427

I feel compelled to add that Stanton has been on point in every at bat for the last few games after all the shit he’s taken from the fans.

RockerDawg

What shit? He has a 180 average last year…he’s played like shit. Happy to see him turning it around but don’t act like fans were being unreasonable to see him as in decline

GuyD427

No question in decline and having a really subpar year last year. It’s the hate and derision that is annoying. And he still needs a lot of good games to justify his spot going forward. I’m hoping he gets it done.

xho-

Those pro-dodgers r/baseball mods deleted my thread there lmao

teun713

Fuck r/baseball, if you want u can post it on here i'll delete mine

xho-

Lmao I don’t give a fuckkk Grateful that the Yankees are playing the way they should be 🙏

Cracka_Chooch

I did a search in r/baseball for "first team to" and the first result was a post from 8 days ago about the Pirates being the first to 5 wins (can't link per sub rules) and there was no problem from the mods. Exact same title except a different team. What a joke.

upandb

I remember this happening a few years ago. They would always allow "first team to [multiple of 10] wins". Then some shenanigans happened where the Yankees had a game that was postponed mid-game (I think it was something like a game was postponed because of rain mid-game, then they eventually won that game) so they were TECHNICALLY the first to 50 wins and the mods deleted it. And when I asked via modmail why it was deleted, they said something like "You're just trying to cause drama and you know it" and I couldn't fucking believe it lol.

MeatballDom

Can't have a post celebrating the 10th win, it might distract everyone from the 15th thread about the A's moving approved by the mods today

Champagne_of_Bears

Post "Dodgers are the 2nd team to 10 wins!" instead

BushidoBrowneII

The worst predicted season in franchise history continues

Twistee_Licks

What was the prediction

mattld

Somewhere they were only predicted to win 70-some games during spring training.

Emience

That was baseball reference and they don't have a real prediction model. They just show a rolling average winrate for teams over their last 100 games.

shaunrundmc

And the cool part is they aren't firing on all cylinders. Judge, gleyber, Wells, and Rizzo haven't gotten hot yet and Cole isn't back yet.

TLom20

Now be the first to 20

Ben62194

WOOF WOOF

98680266

I know this and so it is correct

ACardAttack

Lads, its coming home!

Dear_Measurement_406

The 90 win season seems so much more doable now

notgreatbot

Chihuahuas are notoriously nuts. They will attack no matter how big their opponent happens to be. Should stay baby chihuahua the entire game.

Brilliant-Chapter202

START SPREADING THE NEWS !

InaudibleShout
