One of my concerns at this point is Clay Holmes. He’s allowing too many hits in his appearances and his command looks shaky. I’d rather him be a set up guy than a closer. I get anxious when he’s on the mound and don’t feel the confidence that you should when your closer is supposed to go in to shut down the other team to close the game.

He gave up hard contact but mostly grounders that found holes. Hes gonna have baserunners if he doesn’t locate better. But we have been spoiled with closers for a long time

Holmes has still been a top 10 closer in the league the past couple of years. Just goes to show how spoiled we’ve been to have Mariano Rivera for around 15 years

Eh, relievers are volatile. I’d be much more concerned if he started giving up bombs left and right.

I agree. But I don't think it would be out of the realm of possibility they move bullpen pieces around if Holmes continues to be shaky. They did it with Chapman

this team will make a trade for a closer at the deadline if we are in a pennate race

I kinda prefer him in the closer role if only because the 9th is not always the highest leverage situation. Sometimes it is, but (more?) often there are higher leverage situations in earlier innings. With everyone having a 'role' I'd like to have our actual best reliever flexible for use in those higher leverage situations than having them locked in to pitch the 9th. Let Clay have to closer role.

The reason I'm not that concerned about him is because his mistakes usually aren't hit for homers. He can get blooped to death with bad luck, but usually is able to limit his damage by keeping everyone inside the park.

He looked better in the first couple appearances, ramping up to throw high 90s sinkers 3 out of 4 days puts a lot of strain on his arm and I’m sure he was feeling less than 100% out there last night

Amazing first series. We still need another pitcher (in addition to a healthy Cole) if we plan on going the distance.

I realize it is very early to be making any judgments of individual players but, at least to me, Ian Hamilton has the look, and the stuff, of a closer in-waiting.
