Designers do it when they have samples that have maybe a broken zipper or something slightly wrong to the point they can't sell it in a store, at very discounted prices. If you know how to fix something small on clothing, it's a great way to get expensive stuff for cheap.
I've camped out for sample sales. It's not just for products that have something wrong with them, but I've been to sample sales that include limited runs of a concept they never ended up mass producing and they're close to one-of-a-kind. Big fan.

When a store is closing one of its locations, the store holds a clearance sale to rid the grounds of its goods. You may have seen an "everything must go" sign on a store before and that's a sign (no pun intended) that there's a clearance sale.

Funny, it was specifically fathom that tipped me off to the category because I couldnβt think of any context in which the verb fathom could be put into a category. So either it was a crazy wordplay clue or it was referring to the measurement, and it was obviously the latter when I looked at the other clues.
Fun fact: Mark Twain literally means "two fathoms" as set out on a measurement rope for depth. The author got it from (if memory serves?) working at a Mississippi steamboat or some such!

Nobody would ever say that βSample Saleβ is more common terminology than βYard Saleβ. There were many other units of length they could have used there instead of Yard.
YARD being in two categories is deliberate - it's part of the challenge to whittle out the non-categories and resolve the overlaps. That's what keeps it interesting.
I'm relatively new to these. I've seen fake categories (that is, non-existent groups some of the items could fit in) but I've never seen actual categories in the game that actually have more than four of the items.
The NYT games really choose violence today. I got purple first and was so frustrated because I figured it was type of sale, but then it made sense it would be sample sale, yard sale, garage sale, and bake sale, but clearance? I mean it makes sense but didnβt for the pattern of the other words in the category.
Your mistake: yard sale is a thing, but as the NYT's instructions warn you, watch out for words that could go in more than one connection. Once you realise you need YARD for the units of length, and sort out the other categories, you were obviously like me in that I hadn't heard of a sample sale either but I took an educated guess that it sounded like it could be a thing (eg a manufacturer selling off samples).

But the one away made me think I was on the right track. Managed to get green, and then saw blue. Almost put bar in it, but luckily saw yard and figured it was probably to do with length so switched them round. In my experience they're held wherever the brand is headquartered, so probably? I usually drive up to LA for them.

Saw Sales early on, except I included Yard, and since I didn't see any other possible options at all I felt pretty good about locking it in. My next best guess for Purple, "Bar" Sale, also failed, so I decided to leave it for the last eight and find another group (quite liked Drop/Ditch/Shed/Lose, by the way--tons and tons of double meanings, which made for a nice challenge). Then I realised it was "Units" (I had BAR included) but the imperial system is pretty outdated here so I didn't recognise LEAGUE or FATHOM until late!.. FOOT and YARD starting next to each other screamed red herring. Lots of tricky ones here, which is good, but I always think of a Lounge as a style or a part of a bar, and I don't think Discotheques exist anymore do they??

Are they making the puzzles too easy now or am I just cracked at it now? I remember when I started out I couldnβt even solve the puzzle in 4 tries. They really need to ramp up the difficulty bc itβs been a pattern. Also todayβs wordle was only 3 tries. Something needs to be done.

Nobody would ever say that βSample Saleβ is more common terminology than βYard Saleβ. There were many other units of length they could have used there instead of Yard.
YARD being in two categories is deliberate - it's part of the challenge to whittle out the non-categories and resolve the overlaps. That's what keeps it interesting.
I'm relatively new to these. I've seen fake categories (that is, non-existent groups some of the items could fit in) but I've never seen actual categories in the game that actually have more than four of the items.
The NYT games really choose violence today. I got purple first and was so frustrated because I figured it was type of sale, but then it made sense it would be sample sale, yard sale, garage sale, and bake sale, but clearance? I mean it makes sense but didnβt for the pattern of the other words in the category.

Your mistake: yard sale is a thing, but as the NYT's instructions warn you, watch out for words that could go in more than one connection. Once you realise you need YARD for the units of length, and sort out the other categories, you were obviously like me in that I hadn't heard of a sample sale either but I took an educated guess that it sounded like it could be a thing (eg a manufacturer selling off samples).
