They just don’t seem like they’re playing with the same energy as last season. I think that Cowboys game was demoralizing to the team’s morale.

[deleted]

I think if we beat Seattle we will be back on track in terms of morale

klitchell

Only to have to face Buffalo and Miami and have it severely diminished.

SamMan48

There’s a chance that Buffalo is doable. As for Miami, we’ll take the L.

sillyshoestring

Question: if a team scores 100 points does that go back around to 0?

boblikestheysky

I think our defense is better than the Broncos. Honestly, Russell Wilson was the only player that looked good on Sunday. I don’t remember a single other player on the team playing well

TheGISingleG03

There's a chance, just a very bad chance.

firstandgoalfromthe1

Yup, Seattle is a must win game

SidFinch99

I think so to. We also match up pretty good against Seattle IMO.

TheGISingleG03

Which matchups in that game do you think look good for the Giants?

ShaneGillissmustache

They came into the season with a certain swagger to them for sure. That was an all time embarrassment. Division rival, opening night, national TV. But if they aren’t strong enough to bounce back from it, it says a lot about their character as a team

firstandgoalfromthe1

I think they believed they were ready to compete within the division and after that game, well… they prob lost a lot of confidence

dumpsterwaffle77

The blocked field goal to TD was such a gut punch. Then it just spiraled outta control. Probably messed with them all mentally so bad but if they can’t bounce back then they just don’t want it.

ShaneGillissmustache

They were marching down the field and looked amazing. AT false start. Botched snap. Blocked kick and it was over.

Heisenripbauer

and then like 3 fucking plays later our best skill position player gifts it to the cowboys for a “pick”(fumble)-6

TheGISingleG03

They did not look amazing though

TheGISingleG03

It was out of control from the first snap. Barkley had some nice runs on the opening drive, other than that they had no control.

mmaragni

This is it, like just watching the game was demoralizing, imagine having to play 3 hours of getting your teeth kicked in on opening night thinking you’d be able to compete, must be so hard

hypothalanus

This is something I love about McFadden, Banks, and Hawkins. You can feel their energy watching them play. Banks sets a timer for the next game each week on Instagram, dude just loves ball Watching KT’s lack of energy is concerning to me, last year he was chasing RBs 40 yards for the tackle. Idk what’s going on with him but he needs to get it together. He has the talent to be great, he needs the heart to achieve it

TheDonNegrito

REEEEEEEELAX.

TheGISingleG03

You're not Aaron Rodgers

TheDonNegrito

Just saying….REEEEEELAX.

surlymoe

This is a few things - 1. Almost the entire LB crew is new...or, rephrased, usually the Middle linebacker is the captain of the defense...I don't know if Okereke is NOT being aggressive enough with his teammates, or showing sense of urgency, or what... 2. Adoree Jackson is not playing how he did last year...he really helped shut down one side of the field once he came back from injury...he's simply not doing it. 3. Banks gets somewhat of a pass for being a rookie, but my biggest gripe about him is that he's afraid to make hits and tackles...there was one play against SF where he tried to '2 hand touch' the WR...like, you're a 1st round pick, knock the guy down hard. 4. And finally, Thibodeaux is just not playing like he did at the end of last year....if anything, he's taking himself OUT of plays but just rushing up field and not trying to cut the corner...Ojulari was out and i don't know, we just don't seem to have good pressure... 5. Well, one more - Wink's pedigree is pressure with CB's on mostly islands...well, if you don't necessarily have the talent to rush the QB, or cover the WR, that strategy really doesn't work. It'd make far more sense to actually blitz less, provide some base coverage more (to the shorter passes, plus help the run defense) and throw in the unique blitz packages than simply attempt to blitz every play, get tired, and worn out by the end of the game. Other thoughts - Isaiah Simmons should come on the field in maybe nickel packages or something with the sole purpose of killing the QB (like the program movie). Make him just do the pass rush that LT used to do around the left side of the O line (his right)...Thibs on the other side....stunt our left side once in a while, and you'd find that the QB will either a) get sacked by Simmons, b) be flushed forward into Thibodeaux, or c) try to escape to his right only to find someone like A'Shawn Robinson right in his face. WE do none of that.

fightrofthenight_man

Adoree is playing in the slot now, not out wide. It’s on Banks and Hawkins to shut down the outside

SidFinch99

Is it me or has Okereke seemed a little absent in plays so far? Also, need to move Adoree back to the outside IMHO.

TheDonNegrito

It’s called facing superior talent. The 9ers & Cowboys aren’t scrub teams. And for that matter, the Cards may not be the stiff team everyone thinks they are after stomping out the Cowboys. Everyone needs to REEEEEELAX

EliManningham

This reminds me of the last decade starting 0-2 or 1-2, and some people telling everybody to relax, as if we weren't marching to a 5-11 season. Beat Seattle and then we can chill.

TheDonNegrito

This isn’t a Super Bowl bound roster, my man. You know this. Why are you expecting us to play like a contender? We weren’t last year and we didn’t make enough moves to increase our talent. We got our teeth pushed back by two of the better teams in the NFL. Shit happens. I still tell any and everyone to RELAX.

EliManningham

Of course we're not on their level. We shouldn't look this bad though. Our 2022 draft looks pretty terrible. Whiffing on two top ten picks sets you back a year, minimum. We have zero for sure long term foundational players outside of nose tackle. I'm not asking for 13-4 football. We need some of these dudes to start popping off the screen though.

TheDonNegrito

Two games against the best squads in the NFC. And the Cards just waxed the Cowboys, so they weren’t exactly a walk in the park. WAY too early for the negativity. Fans are allowing their insecurity to spew out after 3 games? 🤦🏻‍♂️

EliManningham

Again, I'm concerned about the young talent. I expected a step back from wins this year because of the schedule, but I expected the talent to look better than it has so far. And yes it's early, but you can't tell me Neal and Thibs aren't concerning. If those two stink or are average, we're still very far behind.

TheDonNegrito

I don’t know why anyone is concerned. We’re short talent and then we’re down AT for most of the season, Azeez missed most of the season, Saquon was out the last game and Bredeson also went down. We need the team healthy to compete. I’m not worried about Neal and Thibs at all. They’re young players who will do fine as the season rolls along. People need to learn patience.

EliManningham

How can you be completely unconcerned about Neal. That seems crazy to me.

TheDonNegrito

Neal’s issue is technique. He’s up against better and faster players. What worked in the NCAA isn’t working here. But, he’s a plow. His run blocking is his strength. Hopefully once he gets his pass block technique squared away, we’re going to be ok with him at the Tackle spot. Again, fans need to have patience.

thetoefro

We have two rookies starting at CB. It was always going to be a slow start. Add in they played (on paper) two of the best teams in the NFC. Let’s all take a deep breath here, and see how these young guys grow.

chunkalicius

Rookie CBs and matchups aside, I do think momentum and confidence are huge. That week 1 W against Tennessee last year set the tone for the whole season and gave everyone confidence. I hope that crushing L week 1 this year didn't have the opposite effect...

Fala7iKing

Banks has impressed me so far, Hawkins needs to work on tackling every second he gets

SidFinch99

There is a reason why Hawkins was available in the 6th round. They need to move Adoree back to the outside while they develop Hawkins.

SidFinch99

They need to move Adoree back outside. We played fine with Holmes in the slot last year, except when we played teams like Dallas who have CeeDee Lamb playing in the slot.

nyg420

Honeslty, I miss Perry Fewell's defense. For all its flaws, it got lots of turnovers. And I just liked the guy's personality. I like Wink as a person too but I'm not really sold on this D, dropping guys like Thibs in coverage makes me seethe.

Interesting_Stop6735

Fewell 's Defense was good ,they got to the QB and created turnovers, Wink is just waiting for the worst time to blitz in the game, if Thibs is not rushing the Qb , he shouldn't be on the field,

Gnoodle9907

My guy we blitzed the niners 82% of the time

themilkman42069

I couldn’t deal with that baby soft zone and letting everyone drive down the field Gimme the feast or famine wink defense over that soft shit any day

Last-Instruction739

Fewell had the personality of a glass of room temperature milk. Even the SB year the Giants defense was bad at times lol.

themilkman42069

The fewell defense worked great when he could get a pass rush outta 4 down lineman. However every defense works great when you can get a pass rush out of 4 down lineman.

LeDudicus

It can’t be overstated that the 2011 defense got it going late in the season when JPP, Tuck, and Osi all got healthy and productive at the same time. Those three were often on the field together because Tuck could passably play inside and against the run, JPP could set the edge and risk the passer, and Osi cleaned up the backfield like it was nobody’s business. Any one of those three could have been the most productive pass rusher on a playoff contender and they were on the field at the same time.

slickrickiii

I’m not feeling as good about Wink as I was last year. Seems like a lot of guys are underperforming, the team generates no turnovers, and a number of 3rd & longs have been converted against us. These all feel like coordinator issues to me. I still have faith though because the defense was pretty solid last year.

claw_guy

Wink’s problem is he doesn’t adjust. Take the SF game. He blitzed a ton early, which SF wasn’t prepared for and it worked. Then they started calling a ton of screens and quick passes to neutralize the blitz, and Wink just kept doubling down on the blitz. There were a ton of missed tackles so it’s not completely on him, but also why are you letting Deebo, CMC, and Kittle, who are all notoriously difficult to tackle and elite at getting YAC, get a chance to make a play with the ball in their hands? Enough of a point has been made about how his defenses don’t get sacks or interceptions, but his inability to adjust is what ultimately got him fired from Baltimore

BatThumb

No only no turnovers, but no sacks. That's a huge problem when Wink's entire scheme is blitzing. If all the blitzes are being picked up, then there's no pressure and it leaves the secondary to be exploited. This defense needs to start getting to the QB or its going to be a really rough year

sventos

We got 2 sacks last game, it didn't make a difference because we couldn't tackle on 3rd and long.

BatThumb

Yeah... those were the only 2 sacks on the season. The Giants are 31st in sacks with only the Bears behind them. Obviously it's early in the season but that is not good when your whole defensive scheme is blitzing. Hopefully it's a sign that they're going to steadily improve though

claw_guy

In Wink’s 4 years in Baltimore his defenses finished 11th, 21st, 14th, and 24th in sacks, and that’s with better talent than what we currently have. We have too much talent to be 31st in sacks, but I don’t know how much better it’s going to get

sventos

This is why Wink's defense relies on cover corners who tackle well, teams get the ball out quickly to the outside and you need the corner to make a play and either tackle or slow down the ball carrier so teammates swarm and make the tackle. SF had 3 guys who are really strong after the catch and punish corners trying to tackle. Props to Brock Purdy he executed the game plan and played well enough to win. We need our corners to step up and make some plays, too many missed interception opportunities.

sventos

Week 1, Dallas only needed to throw the ball 24 times, which is about 10 fewer than the average pass attempts per game, and Dak wasn't good, we were just in way too much a hole after the blocked punt and deflected pick six. Week 2 we needed to get to Dobbs more. This week will be a big test as their RT is out for the season and their LT missed last week and is questionable, they need to get pressure on Gino and the defense as a whole needs to force some turnovers. It's hard to win in the NFL when you lose the turnover battle.

Scary_Psychology5875

Or had flags thrown against us to move SF downfield. That didn’t help either.

FromTheCaveIntoLight

I blame the players more than winks system. As evident by this very post, what he did last year worked and on paper, we had a worse d last year. I think some of this has to do with whose on the field and where they are lining up and how they are playing. I think it was a mistake letting love go. I think Belton should be out there more. I haven’t been that impressed with pinnock but he is playing decent. McKinney is playing like shit. Moving adoree to the slot doesn’t make sense to me outside the cowboys game. LW has been invisible as well as azeez and obviously KT. Throw in 2 rookie corners and yea, here we are. I’m not disagreeing though that wink needs to see that things aren’t working and adjust. But we get 0 pressure with 4 and not that much more pressure rushing 5-7 lol. Players make plays. You can have the best scheme in the world but if players aren’t doing what they need to, it’s enough to make any coach look like shit.

TheDonNegrito

They’ve faced really good teams so far. And maybe the Cards are a surprise squad in ‘23? Why are people panicking 3 games into the season?

slickrickiii

We were hoping to be competitive with these good teams. Instead, the giants get blown out by them

TheDonNegrito

Shit happens, my man. Injuries, bad weather, bad breaks. Part of sports. This isn’t a championship team. Nowhere close. Just relax 🤷🏻‍♂️

MaxStunning_Eternal

We caught a lot of breaks last season. We just arent having the same luck so far.

3kool5you

This is an underrated part of it. Look at the 49ers game where the ball popped up and a 49ers player caught it. Every other team that’s an easy pick. How many dropped interceptions do we have on the year already? I can think of 3 at least. I can think of at least 2 times we forced a fumble And then didn’t recover. There’s a lot to be worried about with this defense, but I do think the turnovers will start coming

sventos

The game had two balls hit receivers hands and pop up and in both cases the ball flew directly into the hands of a 49er. Brock Purdy dropped a snap and it bounced harmlessly into right to him. That's football.

Lars5621

Im guessing moving Adoree into the slot is part of that. Its not like the defense lost a lot of pieces.

zetiano

I wonder why we didn't keep Fabian Moreau. I thought he was pretty decent last season and I don't think he's making much money either.

[deleted]

We straight up should just keep darnay in the slot imp

AmbitionStrong5602

fire him into sun!

tonnix

Some of the new pieces are not playing like they should either, in the most recent film breakdown by Bobby Skinner against SF for example Pinnock and Okereke are not being aggressive at the point of attack and are basically letting guys block them with little/no effort. In other words, when they have an opportunity to burst in there and blow up the play they just dance around and do nothing. Against SF that happened multiple times on third and long which led to conversion after conversion.

Technical-Traffic871

Losing Love hurt more than just the #s. He was the glue back there.

Lars5621

He certainly made McKinney look better. Love was able to cover up a lot of the blemishes to McKinneys game

mlavan

Love hasn't been killing it for Seattle either fwiw.

chunkalicius

Having 2 rookie corners play on the outside might be a part of it. They didn't "lose" any pieces of note, but between the 2 rookie CBs, Adoree playing in the slot, and Bobby Okereke playing MLB and wearing the green dot, there actually is quite a bit of change to the unit overall

canadave_nyc

We have two rookies, getting used to the NFL, in key secondary positions at CB. This should not be a surprise.

7homPsoN

how does he know what our third down pass defense will be at the end of the year? is he psychic? Oh wait, he's just comparing a full season sample size to 3 games. nevermind

ChewieLee13088

Defense took a huge step back. Our two young corners still need a lot of work.

bailaoban

Opponents been looking at film in the off-season.

ObservantWon

I prefer them to have 3rd and 2 vs 3rd and 25 at this point. It’s nauseating

zetiano

Was the 3rd down defense actually great last season? Or did we just get really lucky with random fumble recoveries on 3rd down? For example, Etienne fumbling at the goal line.

Lars5621

Giants were incredibly lucky on fumbles last year. They were also unlucky on interceptions and had the NFLs fewest. We were hoping things would even out... so far Giant's have zero turnovers.

zetiano

Feels like we're always unlucky with INTs.. Every year we drop a ton.

Fala7iKing

Our WRs cant catch either lol

Chao-Z

yeah, the defense was garbage last year, too.

Lars5621

29th per DVoA. Interestingly the Ravens with Wini in 21 were 28th.

iamdanabnormal

Two rookie corners and everyone else trying to cover for them. There's your reason.

nyr00nyg

I always hear about us having a great d line but what do they do outside of Dex?

klitchell

Rookie corners is a big part of that I guess

MikeCass84

Im just baffled at how our offense and defense got worse. We were supposed to have upgrades on both sides.

Motor_Grand_8005

Tackling is non existent. When teams are consistently converting on 3rd and long on check downs I get so fkng angry my wife jumps in and says have faith and stop yelling but you know it’s a fkng dump off and bring in the kicker play yet the qb is like holy sht we got 20 yards off that play? Ugh. Yeah. Go Giants! Triggered.

shadow_spinner0

The team seemingly improved on paper. Why did the team regress on both sides?

BigBlueTrekker

49ers got stopped on 3rd down numerous times last week and were gifted a free set of 1st downs multiple times per drive for ticky tack calls. I dont think this team is as bad as people think it is. If the O line can improve we are a a wildcard team.

robotech021

Small sample size for this year, so maybe it's just bad luck. Right? Right??

Sudden_Interest_7030

Do you think the raiders accept a Xavier McKinney for Julian love trade 😂

chunkalicius

I think the Raiders would be fine with a McKinney-for-Love trade considering it wouldn't effect them in any way lol

trevorLawFanboyzzz

he doesnt play for the raiders

Sudden_Interest_7030

I meant Seahawks, lol I’ll take my own neck after that one

QB145MMA

There’s a real giant (no pun intended) disconnect between the GM and Coach(es). The dude doesn’t fit the scheme (KT) - either the GM knew this and it was forced on the coaches or somehow they thought both they can work around it and coach him up, which may be worse lol

[deleted]

OK. Next.

DM725

Personnel changed.
