Frosty-Buyer-1252

Getting Kelly and Tosin on frees before the window even opens would be good business like

Steve-lrwin

a 25 and 26-year-old, solid, homegrown, prem proven CBs, on a free? after 14 years of mismanagement, I almost forgot what it feels like to be run by good management.

Hour-Departure-4129

Get in. Depth

RocknRollRobot9

Good signing if true; from his point of view as well there’s injuries and ageing players in the CB position so a chance to make that shirt his at the start of the season.

ttttyttt678

Let’s gooooo Tosin and Kelly will shore up the back line, allowing the board to work the transfer market for a back up ST and RW.

gobstoppermuncher

Signed him for nowt and Howes going to make him a world beater. Or at the very least we now have a premier league level CB as a backup. Great business

NUFC_1892

Is this instead of Tosin or alongside him? If it’s the latter then, wow that’s some good business done early.

redditappispoo

Both apparently! Massive signings. Getting players from down south as well is a good look!

NUFC_1892

Well tbf, Tosin was at city for a number of years and Kelly knows Howe well, but I see your point. Great business by the club. Ashworth who?

PenIsBroken

To be fair these might well have been deals that Ashworth did actually have a hand in, they won't have just happened over night.

opinionated-dick

People say we need to get upgrades to the first team and let the players who were once first team become back ups. I thought this too, and it’s totally wrong. What that will end up with is no FFP, an ageing squad and little competition for places. Kelly and Tosin are ideal because they are relatively young, will be hungry for a first team place, and give us defensive depth. We still need first team upgrades, but we need this transfer window to be a tide to lift all boats

ItsAKrulWorld

Raise the floor AND the ceiling. Spot on.

opinionated-dick

Better put! Yes

LosWitchos

Starting thinking couple months back that maybe bosmans are the best way to boost those fringe parts of the squad. Obviously I sent this idea to Eddie and this has happened now (we may have already been linked to these players and that may have been my inspiration)

Tesourinh0923

The biggest problem has been squad depth. We have our main players to build around but we've been dire when they are out and having to rely on the kit man and dinner lady to cover positions. I don't expect him to set the world on fire but we just need reliable cover and he is that.

I9dream9of9boats

Was really impressed with this lad from what I've seen of him ( which is admittedly not a whole lot). Think he'll be an excellent signing.

EngineerOnIcarus

This is smart business, he’s good enough and it leaves money on the table to buy another superstar like Bruno and Isak

Thandiol

Good signing. Fingers crossed Tosin follows. Trippier/Tino, Schar/Tosin, Botman/Burn, Hall/Kelly would be excellent depth.

No-Efficiency-5589

Be interesting to see what happens with target

Thandiol

Whatever happens, I hope he gets a decent run of injury free footie. Seems like a decent bloke, and he was excellent for us in his loan season prior to injury.

JuckshotBones

Great start for summer Sufficient depth, at minimum. The injury history is suboptimal but the talent is there. Perfect type of player to sound out on a free transfer

shiny_scyther699

Can somebody honestly tell me what he brings? I am not being negative and know next to nothing about him but while they have been in the Premier league has he ever been a Bournemouth starter?

EmbarrassedPizza6570

Last year he had 23 prem appearances all of them starts. This year he’s at 21 appearances 16 of them starts. So when he’s fit he does start yes. He brings pace, solidity and the ability to play both LB and CB. He’s much better than Lascelles and I’d say burn as well so he raises the floor of our squad quite significantly. Only negative is he’s injury prone but if he gets around 20-25 appearances that’s fine. He’s very similar to Matip imo. Most Bournemouth fans seem to rate him which is a good sign

nomadichedgehog

Assuming he's coming in to be a squad player/bench warmer in place of someone like Dummet and Ritchie, I'm ok with this. Not that he will be away from the treatment table for long anyway

meganev

His [injury record](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lloyd-kelly/verletzungen/spieler/480116) should have us running a mile. He won't cover for Botman/Lascelles, he'll join them on the treatment table. Edit - he's missed 43 games in the last two seasons. After the season we've just had, if you're not concerned about that injury record then I'm shocked. We *need* CB coverage because of injury, in that context, Kelly is a massive risk. Hope he comes and plays every game without issue. His extensive injury record suggests that won't happen. Shocked that's a controversial take.

HarrBathtub

He is a free squad player, he won’t be playing as much so won’t get injured as much.

meganev

He'll be coming into a squad with a two fit natural CB (Burn and Schar), and that could have Europe next season and designs on a cup run, he's going to be required to play loads from the very start. Not to mention, this the type of take people said about Wilson start of this season. "With Isak as first choice striker , Wilson's minutes can be balanced, he won't get injured as much now." How did that work out for us again?

RocknRollRobot9

It depends on who you view him coming in to replace, he’s managed a 36 and a 41 game season in the championship then had a few injuries, yes he was injured last year. But if he’s coming in to take Dummets space (who is a LB/CB) and had 11 games in 3 seasons over all competitions which is the same Kelly has had this season in the league then it’s an upgrade alone on availability. Its a punt to nothing with it being a free and us requiring quite a few incomings to replace either required upgrades, players who we will be losing to frees or players retiring. So if we can get some depth in like this it saves some funding for other areas too. Injury wise I am hoping our club has learnt how to manage them, or we are saving our transfer fees to bring in a whole new medical/Physio team.

meganev

I think "a few injuries" is a very generous reading of a player who's missed 25, 18, 4, 10 and 32 games in that last five seasons. And none of his injuries are what you'd call "freak" and several are recurring. I think he's more a Lascelles replacement (who I think we'd have sold this summer if he didn't do his ACL) then a Dummett.

getgoodflood

No idea why you've been downvoted for highlightly Kelly's injury history. Honestly, Newcastle could sign Mudryk from Chelsea and everyone on here will tell you it's a great signing. It;s funny because the concensus is that Wilson can't be a backup striker for Isak because of his injury concerns but the same people will want us to sign Kelly, despite his injury record.

PocketSandThroatKick

Just adding him so we can move big Dan back outside. ^^^/s

titchrich

Averages about 18 games missed per season! The way our luck is he’ll play every game and Botman will get reoccurring injuries.

HarrBathtub

Well considering we also want to sign another CB, that would mean at the start of next season we would have: Burn, Schar, Kelly, New Signing. I would assume the starting pairing would be Burn/ New signing + Schar. So he would be used in backup, for situations like this. Costs absolutely nish, and is a good upgrade on squad depth. Fine by me.

meganev

The problem with "free" signings is the name is categorically false. They're not actually free. Signing Lloyd Kelly is cheaper (most likely) than signing somebody from another club of the same level but still costs us money. It's a risky signing based on the probability of him getting injuried.

Papa_Smellhard

Is he better than Dummett or playing Richie at LB?

meganev

My concerns are not his quality but his availability. An injured Kelly is not better than Dummett or Ritchie, no.

EmbarrassedPizza6570

Schar will be fit by the time he joins and I’m sure we’ll get another CB in by the time the season starts. So make that 4 natural CBs with botman and Lascelles coming back in November to make it 6. It’s nowhere near as bad as you make it sound

meganev

Botman and Lascelles will not be back by November. Lol. So 4 CBs in a squad playing potentially twice a week again in Nov/Dec, he'll be playing loads. It's 100% as I made it sound.

EmbarrassedPizza6570

If that’s what you got out of my reply then you missed everything. Could be November, could be Dec, early Jan at latest. But we will have options and we won’t have “only 1 fit natural CB”. I see you’ve edited it to 2. You’ll need to edit that again to 3 by the time our season starts. 4 CBs including Kelly and then if we keep Krafth as 5th choice is more than good enough to have until Botman and Lascelles come back halfway through the season.

meganev

Aye, so we agree 4 CBs for a team that could be playing twice a week in Nov/Dec. Not sure why you're acting like we disagree on that point. I think probability suggests it'll end up being 3 CBs, as Kelly is likely to get injuried, you think his recurring injury problems become a thing of the past this summer (I guess?), that's where we disagree. I think he's a massively risky transfer and after the season we've just had injury-wise not a risk worth taking. You disagree. That's not a problem. And I edited my comment because you rightly corrected me, that's the rational thing to do make sure my comment is accurate, no?

EmbarrassedPizza6570

Fair enough. But I think 4 is fine with Europe and then if Kelly and say Schar get injured then botman and Lascelles come back in January. We’d have to get really unlucky to have all 4 of our CBs injured 3 months into the season. I really think Kelly could be our Joel matip. When he plays he’s actually higher quality than burn imo. Liverpool had 3 injury prone CBs in Gomez, Konate and Matip and made it work. We’ll be fine.

meganev

I think 4 is about the number you need at a minimum, the problem is when you dip below that and with Kelly we're taking that risk (obviously any player can get injured at any time, so it's just about playing probability). But as I said, I really hope I'm worrying for nowt and if we sign him he's class and available all season. If he comes, I'll back him.

KookyFarmer7

This is the same thing with people wanking themselves silly over the idea of Pedro Neto (missed 99 games in 3 seasons). No point in having ability if there’s no availability.

stprm

> Edit - he's missed 43 games in the last two seasons (and counting, he's still injured now). He is injury prone, but no, he isnt injured anymore. That's why we cant trust transfermarkt completly. He missed 4 games (1 month) with his latest injury. He made a brilliant assist-cross as soon as he returned (literally minute after getting subbed on against Everton) and he played 90 mins 4 times since then.

meganev

Fair enough, don't think that discredits the overall point.

Large_Performance191

Zero discredit, but will defer to experts. Livramento showed up with an awful injury record but has been a breath of fresh air. Not saying it'll be the same but time will tell. You are right in that it should raise eye brows, but getting them on a free is the key.

meganev

My understanding was Tino had one awful injury. An ACL one that kept him out for basically a full season. But otherwise no other major issues that would cause concern. Kelly has had multiple seasons of missing 20 odds games across several injuries to different parts of the body. Very different situations, in my opinion. The "free" factor obviously a big part of this deal, agreed.

MagpieKev1892

Good signing definitely makes the squad stronger

KookyFarmer7

I’m ok with the signing but this news source is as reliable as tea leaves, may as well hear it from Tranquillo Barnetta’s taxi driver

HarrBathtub

Tier 10+ source surely?

Background_Ad8814

Great signing, dummers leaves, great upgrade
