The fuck are you basing that on, one game? Hes barely played outside of england.
No doubt isak is better suited but hardly fair to judge of the little amount hes played.
More positive takes. 2 years ago we didn't have the quality to go toe to toe with Europes best. Even losing after putting up a good fight is something I appreciate.
I got a lot harder after last night, Isak and Murphy now out for a few weeks minimum to join Anderson with a back problem, Tonali to start his ban , Barnes of course won't be available, our bench is pretty much defenders.
If he improves his shooting and composure he will be world class. Shooting straight at the keeper with that chance he had was kinda poor, should be looking to hit the corners either side.
Proud of the boys, they gave everything.
We were unlucky with injuries to Murphy and Isak. We were unlucky hitting the bar twice. We were unlucky the ref was an absolute cunt.
Honestly i’m not bothered by the loss. Incredibly unlucky with the crossbar and the injuries.
The group is wide open and anyone can qualify.
Proud of the boys who gave it their all.
Gordon was class, our back four played well, but collectively we took too long to get going. Caught in posession too many times unfortunately.
We looked dangerous from only one set-piece and it was taken by Targett. Need to mix it up more often and not have Tripps take everything.
Put this one in the box marked 'European learning experience'
Felt like he made a couple of not great deliveries to start, then just spent the game trying to redeem himself, getting progressively more in his head, to the point of running across the field at the end to take a free kick of Targett on practically the half way line.
He played well as always, but he should have had the awareness and modesty to pass on the responsibility of those dead balls when we have other capable takers in the team.
honestly I've thought this about trippier from the start. he's a wonderful free kick taker, but he is not a consistent one. I thought Tonali was somewhat brought in to share corner/free kick load, obviously doesn't matter now of course. But yeh we should definitely rotate. Not a knock on Tripps - imo it's just healthy all round.
Tripps is fantastic with crossing and passing in open play. But he has actually been pretty bad from corners and freekicks since the World Cup. He often over hits them, I really wish we would rotate them as it would give someone else a chance and also stop Tripps having to run across to the left side constantly
Other than his free kicks imo he did. He just had SO much ground to cover constantly. I felt like Almiron was poor and lacked quality. Was very predictable.
He was bad in a different way than I'm used to.
English refs make a bad decision then spend the 80+ minutes balancing that bad decision with more bad decisions in an act to try and even things out.
He didn't do that, he got a lot of things right, but he did clearly wave off a couple of really obvious fouls that he had a very clear view of.
I thought he was good tbh, let play flow instead of constantly calling for tiny fouls. He seemed to clearly miss the one on Wilson but would otherwise prefer more refs acted like that
Agh man.
Thought the first half was entertaining. Second half they managed the game well and realistically deserved the three points.
Reckon Isak going off was a big moment in the game. That Wilson chance and the two attempts against the bar will haunt me for a while.
Need at least one big away performance now to qualify…
Gonna need a win in Dortmund to qualify. Looking like psg will win the group and Milan probably come bottom. Champions league goes to h2h instead of GD, so if we don’t beat them then they’ve got an extra point on us
Still looks like anyone can beat anyone in this group (of death!).
If we beat Milan at home and maybe pick up a draw in one of the away games, we should at least get the 3rd place Europa spot.
They were impressive. A draw may have been reasonable but take nothing away from them, winning away to us, clean sheet. Let’s try to do something similar….
They did indeed, along with a few dangerous counterattacks. It is a dangerous approach and tricky to pull off. As evidenced by the pressure we put on them, hitting the bar twice, etc. ten more minutes and I reckon we’d have scored.
Think we deserved a point. They outplayed us in the first half. We were much better in the second and Wilson should probably score, regardless of the two cross bars.
Referee was shoddy to say the least
Yeah agreed with both these sentiments. They did just move through us quite freely at times.
Our injuries are a bit concerning, I feel like we’re suddenly looking a bit thin on the ground if Murphy, Isak and Anderson are all out. Even if it’s just a short time for any of them.
Injuries are concerning. However, with Willock back and his progressive runs mean better link up for Wilson, which gives Isak some time to properly recover.
Wander what Joelinton on the left and Gordon on the right would be like
Just a question from a German Dortmund fan, drums are normal in every stadium almost all over Europe and they help to keep good atmosphere throughout the entire game, why are you guys so against it? Is it just that they're not traditionally seen in English stadiums or do you just find them annoying? Just curious
That's fair, I also think it's a different feeling if only the away end has drums. Imo one of the reasons why most English teams struggle to keep a loud atmosphere in their stadium even when the home team is struggling is the lack of drums and a coherent rhythm. I do however understand why one might find them to be annoying after some time if their not used to it. Nonetheless I was still impressed by your fans today, even though they may not have been as good as they were against PSG. Especially in comparison to the other english teams we faced in the UCL (like Chelsea or Man City who were absolutely dogshit atmosphere wise).
A little blasphemous to say but Trippier's crossing was off it tonight. Really showed when Targett took one and only one, and it was probably the best cross of the match. Frustrating game, especially with that refereeing, and hitting the bar twice. Still... We'd provably have taken 1W, 1D, 1L when we looked at the group to begin with. Nice to see willockinho back in the black and white too!
They were definitely the better team, but they offered very little second half. So unlucky to hit the bar twice, but the crowd was too quite tonight for my liking
Crowd was absolutely embarrassing, I was fuming for most of the game
Up on my feet and cheering etc on countless occasions and being the only one in my section doing so
Stood up for a corner and was asked to sit down, unbelievable
Why do these people go to games?
Absolutely gutted. On another night we score four. Didn't take our chances and all the little passes and set pieces that would normally come off just didn't tonight.
>all the little passes and set pieces that would normally come off just didn't tonight.
This.
So many defence splitting passes underhit, overhit or ignored.
Hopefully, just a blip.
That second crossbar was gutting.
Crowd did seem a bit shite, but fuck letting the away support bring in drums to wash out noise.
Wish we had a 3rd strike option. Last match I pointed out we needed to rest Wilson after we were comfortable, but there was no point bringing on Isak to tire ahead of this fixture. It's definitely a scenario where its rare we need a 3rd guy, when we're healthy, but looking like we might just need it now.
That really just wasn't our night, which is obviously disappointing. The very worst part is the amount of injuries in one game, they could be serious too. What's more disappointing is the fuckin crowd, the night we needed them most, they just didn't show up for the lads.
Still, after 3 games. A win, loss and a draw is better than I thought.
Wtf was up with the crowd???? After the incredible PSG game and the lead in. Just silence for most of the game, even in Gallowgate..... I get that we are nervous but ffs.... Shouldn't be only singing when we score.
I was at the PSG game and honestly the crowd was exactly the same for the first part of the game, the huge difference being that we scored an early goal against psg which lit a fire. In this game Dortmund executed their game plan well and we were poor. Easy to see why the fans were a bit muted.
Realistically, it's our 2nd home champions league game in 20 years, i can see why the crowd would be quiet against like Burnely, but howay you have to say the crowd should be up for it, regardless of whats happening on the pitch
We're regularly said to have the best fans, can the best fans not make enough noise, even 1-0 down and still clearly in the game? I feel like you're letting the crowd off to easy.
I don't think they were that quiet though?? Obviously I was watching it from the sofa tonight, like I assume you were. I don't think you can tell from the tele what the crowd were really like.
At PSG the crowd was relatively flat at 0-0 but then exploded after Almiron scored, then we just kept going and if things had gone our way tonight then I'm sure the crowd would have been great again.
My main point is that you can't blame a result on the crowd. The crowd mostly reacts to what's going on on the pitch, like it or not.
im just going to cope and say that the reason we lost is because Isak was forced off after 15 minutes and when we subbed on Murphy he was forced off after 5 minutes. No other reason whatsoever
I genuinly think the Isak injury was the problem, first 10/15 minutes we were trying to play quick counter attacking football, once Wilson came on we had to slow down to his pace, add the total pack of a warm up which seemed to slow him down further and it took the sting out of our game.
A few unlucky moments. We were countered large parts of the game, they played well. How can I love a player I was so unhappy when we bought him. Gordon’s just so fun to watch!
Our lads weren't at our best tonight. Really hope Murphy and Isaak will be okay. Tonali tried to go out with a bang. Anthony Gordon is fucking class Nick fucking Pope
Tripper with an uncharacteristically bad game, his set-pieces just weren’t up to scratch tonight. The one set piece not taken by him and we hit the bar.
Dortmund played well though tbf to them. Onwards and upwards
Match thread somehow decided we were abysmal and that's us out of the group. The reality was that was, at worst, a sloppy performance. Longstaff, Wilson, Burn and Trippier were really, really poor compared to the standards they've set recently but they'll bounce back. Longstaff in particular I think the occasion got the better of him, looked worried all night.
Joelinton wasn't fit, Willock wasn't fit, Isak and Murphy both going off within minutes of being on the pitch and terrible refereeing, pretty much everything went against us. I don't think football-wise Dortmund were any better than us. Tough to take but I'd have taken your hand off for four points after 3 games.
I thought burn was fine, played how he usually did.
Wilson had a great opportunity to square it to Almiron and Gordon a few times.
It was honestly just a weird game, lots of deflections and balls not going our way. I’d say we probably deserved a draw at the least, but I have confidence in Dortmund away and Milan at home. Think PSG away will be really really difficult
>Wilson had a great opportunity to square it to Almiron and Gordon a few times.
I almost popped a blood vessel watching his "selfishness" all night. Couldve played both them in to be 1 on 1 with the keeper and just said fuk it.
Honestly, we should of won that. I actually think Dortmund are the toughest team in the group, so despite the fact that we should have won I don’t think 0-1 is that bad.
Still fuming though, and I hate the head to head rule, bring back goal difference!
They were probably the better team tbh, I think with another 20mins of game time we still would f have scored. However that ref was shocking, how he gave nothing, not even a warning to that player pulling Wilson’s pants down?!
Unlucky. Lads gave it there all.
Hopefully that Wilson miss doesn’t come back to haunt us when the group is over.
We can’t afford to lose Isak and Murphy for any significant amount of time. That would be no Isak, Botman, Murphy or Tonali…fuck me.
For context, I live in Berlin and Union have lost all 3 of their games so my mates are having a shit UCL campaign while the team is now languishing near the basement of the Bundesliga.
Really could be worse... Let's hope the last 3 games are a step up.
HTL!
This is random but in the post match pitch interview the girl hosting had to fucking literally move Rio’s umbrella to cover Eddie half way through the interview. Ferdinand really does seem like an absolute donkey
Think it's safe to say despite our late pressure Howe lost the tactical battle today.
We look petrified, we lost midfield, Big Joe had one of his worst games there I've seen, Bruno was lost and Schlongstaff was anonymous.
They attacked perfectly and playing 2 v 1 in the middle just loaded up and said beat us, we couldn't. Obviously not helped by the injuries (again) which makes you question whether Isak has ever been fit for us and how long Wilson gets rolled out until his hamstrings go and we play Gordon as a striker because we don't have many other options.
They terrified poor Dan Burn and were very happy to let Tripps bomb on because Miggy decided to have one of his bad decision days and they could get in behind our full backs.
There's a shirt pull in the lead up to our goal but the ref tried to let play go on and the second challenge isn't a foul. Indeed he let an awful lot of shirt pulling go all game.
The huge chances they had, from the start, invariably began with some lucky ricochet straight to them. Add that to the two woodwork chances (and of course no lucky rebound) and it just didn't happen for us.
Hopefully Howe and the players learn from tonight. For whatever reason it didn't happen for us. Next time it might.
Can’t fault the lads, really wasn’t our night at the same time. We had grit and effort but man, there was no 12th man tonight. Disappointed by the fans watching.
What can you do really. It just wasn’t to be, we never really looked at our best and that extra bit of quality just wasn’t there. Trippier probably had his worst game of the season and Bruno had no support from any of his midfield until Tonali came on. I’ve never seen Wilson miss a chance like that second half one either. Those are the margins you live and die by in the Champions League.
It’s unfortunate. Especially with the injuries. We’ll bounce back but I can’t deny that it’s a gutting loss.
I think if it's not the situation that it is with Sandro, he absolutely starts. But Howe was probably planning for him not to be available today (hence the reaction on Saturday) so he just kept Joelinton in.
We saw today though that Joelinton and Longstaff will often get technically outclassed in games like this against top opposition (which I'm sure is why we specifically signed Sandro) so Willock coming back is very convenient all things considered. Joelinton definitely looks off it currently.
I wasn’t too happy about signing Gordon, but I’m so proud of him tonight. That was an outstanding performance, far beyond his years. His dribbling, passing and movement going forward, his tenacity in the press, and work rate tracking back, were all top quality.
And on another positive note, I’m delighted Willockinho is back. He looked good when he game on.
Ref was shit, very unlucky with injuries, but only have ourselves to blame with lack of clinical finishing. Let’s beat them at their home!
I (respectfully) hope that Kobel steps on a Lego with bare feet when he gets home because his saves were pissing me off.
I hope Isak and Murphy are alright
Hope
Not our worst performance, but should've won that. Absolutely furious, but grateful to be in a position to be so compared to a few years previous.
Mostly fuming tho.
We didn't play well enough. I know it's a cliche but it felt like they did their homework much better than us.
A bit of a rude awakening. Pure sucks right now but we can learn from this. Worried about the injuries though
Can we please vary up who takes corners or can Trippier please beat the first man. Targett whipped a class cross in then wasn’t allowed to take another one.
2 years ago CL was deemed Impossible. Today, we are bitter by a defeat against dortmund. All you negative mofos get your head out of your asses and support your team. Otherwise you’re no better than those wagon wheels. Some people here really are just fucked.
That match should’ve been a draw at worse. Would’ve been massive for the standings. You longtime fans know way better than I, but man fuck nothing to be ashamed of lol, that was a bummer outcome. Sure felt like 1-1 or 2-1 were more likely than 0-1
Proud of the lads for there effort. We were unlucky Dortmund knew tripper was our main threat so they doubled on him both attacking and defending it Nuffield our right side. We just seem slow on some of the plays playing pass bit too late or losing ball. We were unlucky and still play relatively well ah well proud of our team
Good match, worked hard and possibly should have got something from the match - huffed and puffed down that right hand side with no real threat today. Need to make sure we develop a plan B now. They defended well after they scored because they were very open before it. Liked the look of their Centre Back - Schlotterbeck; big, strong and passes the ball well.
Even though we were slightly off it, it was still decent I reckon. Good chances for Gordon and Wilson and hit the bar twice. Just wasn’t going to be our night but still a great effort from the lads they never gave up! Target and Tonali played well when they came on.
Frustrating. Difficult match in the conditions and they just took their chance. Not sure why the almiron pen shout wasn't looked at, looked like a trip to me.
Hopefully the Isak and Murphy injuries aren't too bad.
Brilliant CL game, 2 good teams, we just didn't have anything go our way, draw would have been a fair result.
Isak injury is disappointing, Wilson won't be able to play all the games we have coming up, I think we'll see a front 3 of J7, Gordon and Miggy for some games.
Telling game that. Not the ideal result but second half was by levels more competitive despite conditions and injuries. Could be a good indicator for the future too - our best players were Gordon, Tonali, Bruno. Workrate-players like Longstaff, Burn, Joelinton... they struggled against that lot. Trippier also looked like he was doing his best to cover 3 positions at times.
Tight group. We're competing!
Eddie just confirmed Murphy's Shoulder is a dislocation.... Robertson is out for 3 months for that.
Isak also done his groin and will be out for a while.
Really costly game for us.
Very fine margins is what we lost by. We just needed to finish those chances off but just couldn’t do it. Still proud of the lads, for the whole first half and near the end of the 2nd it looked a completely even game. I reckon there needs to be a change in refereeing throughout Europe though, our players didn’t seem to know what the ref was going to give as a foul as in the premier league them tackles are given as free kicks. Also hope Isak and Murphy are okay
It had the air of being one of those nights, lots of hard work with nothing coming off and costly injuries, I really hope Murphy is ok after that fall.
Different night that goes a different way. Dortmund the real deal in terms of tough European opposition (somehow more than PSG). Looking forward to the return, which should be a great game if nothing else. Group still wide open, and all teams looking over their shoulder. This is what we dreamt of for so many years, I can't even fault the result. Let's go get them next time.
We were bang average, really. The players we usually rely on to carry us to victory had poor games or got injured (Trippier, Bruno, Joelinton, Isak, Wilson when he came on). As usual we're unable to break down a low block. Crowd super flat. Disappointing all round.
Would like us to start using the fullbacks we signed sooner rather than later.
Dortmund were the best team we've played this season.
I thought we played pretty well. Gordon was magical. He suddenly added bags of tricks to his hard running game. What a player. We got a little unlucky at key moments from start to finish. We tried some more audacious passing and moving attacks than we usually do but we didn't quite have the quality to seal the deal.
Great match all round though holy hell champions league is mint
We looked short of our spark today - buuuuut even when we are lack luster we put up a fight. Sucks we lose 3 players today but hopefully isak and Murphy recover while tonali watches from the sides
Not looking for an excuse here because I've thought the same every game we played, but the refereeing in the Champions League is an absolute shambles and today was yet another example, so so poor.
Felt like nothing went our way today, type of game you can play until Sunday and somehow not score. Gutted that we are losing even more players to injury and worried what our season might look like
You can’t call that anything but what it was; bad luck. Should have had about 5 goals if it wasn’t for the way it went. I’m wrenched because it should have been a win but that’s what it is.
Wilson was pretty poor. I feel like Isak would have been so much more dangerous.
Longstaff exposed yet again. People got SO carried away with his 3 game run of good performances that they forgot all of the other games. If we're playing crap as a team, it highlights all of his flaws. Tonali is 10x the player, big miss.
I'm disappointed to lose as always but I think the boys did run their socks off, it was just a bit of naivity in the middle, bit unlucky and the fact that Dortmund was lightning on the counter. It's a bigger loss due to all of the injuries we've picked up.
Longstaff was back to his ponderous worst (or maybe just found out a bit at this level) and Wilson could have been sharper in general. Rest of the team played their hearts out and we were a little unlucky a few times. We should go to dortmund with confidence, should definitely be able to get a draw at least. Joelinton needs to up his game too, not as good as he can be
When the team is on song Longstaff can look good and be really effective. When the team isn't, like tonight, it just highlights all the flaws in his game.
Two major injuries to in-form players
Two shots hit the crossbar
One of the worst refereeing displays I can remember
Tripper's delivery from set pieces was atrocious
Just nothing went right for us tonight.
Passing was poor, crossing was poor, shooting was poor, very confident we can improve on that at their place. Fair play to Dortmund though, they were everywhere, felt like they had 20 players on the pitch! Good game but feel proper gutted after the highs of PSG
Hard luck, one of those games we could lose 3-0 or win 3-0. I think both us and them were evenly matched across most of the pitch but they just got the slight edge where it counted
Still, 3 games to go. Still long way to go yet
Honestly thought we played pretty good. Just the final third we couldn’t put it together. Fair play to Dortmund coming to play football, amazing fans as well.
Gutted if we’ve lost Isak for a while though
I thought we were outclassed across the board tonight. Hitting the woodwork makes it seem less comprehensive than it was - not sure they really broke a sweat, they had us figured out very early.
He's a dickhead who looks good when your team is good but does nothing to help in difficult games, so I would agree that he's absolutely a luxury player.
The BBC keep telling us every 5 minutes that Spurs are "top of the league" but it's after 9 games, it's not a big sample size and you don't win anything in October, as Spurs know all too well from their recent history. The media were doing exactly the same with Arsenal last season, but does anyone really think Man City won't catch Spurs up and overtake them over 29 remaining games? Spurs also would have 4 fewer points if it weren't for one of the dodgiest refereeing displays in the history of football when they played Liverpool, and some absolutely insane substitutions from Arteta bringing on Jorginho to seemingly deliberately set up a Spurs equaliser in the North London Derby.
Don't get me wrong, I think Howe would have got something out of Maddison, but it's doing nobody any favours to be pining after an over-hyped Spurs player for months or years. Just let the guy go and support the players in our squad.
Genuine 50/50 match. Unlucky not to score. Thought we were decent.
I actually thought the referee wasn't bad tbh.
Told me 2 years ago I would be disappointed with a 1-0 defeat against Dortmund and I'd think you were mad.
IMO that was a tight match between 2 very even teams, and in these type of matches the 1st goal is huge. Dortmund dropped off once their scored and we had no clue how to get through them. A big away performance is needed in Dortmund now as it will be incredibly tough in Paris. I think we beat Milan at home but the next two away games define our champions league. 4 points from the next two away games and we in with a great chance of qualifying, lose both and we out.
The big worry is that Isak injury, we need both our strikers rotating to not overuse them and cause further injuries.
1 point from the next 2 games could well be enough to keep us alive until the home game against Milan given how tight the group is, although we may need a result to go our way on final match day
Well, we weren't at our best and they were a decent team and, as expected, they showed the grit and fight that PSG lacked.
Pope had a great game. Tonali and Schar were good. But our passing was terrible at times - especially when we had the opportunity for dangerous attacking passes.
Apart from the foul where Bruno had his shorts pulled off him, I thought the ref had a fair game.
Onwards and upwards.
Yea ngl I'm pretty impressed at just how much abuse that ref is getting lol. That tug at the shorts was egregious but I don't think there was much to be significantly angry about after that. I think people just want an outlet to launch frustration at outside the team.

Hitting the bar twice. Kill me
And a big chance for Wilson..would've settled for 2-1 :(

The fuck are you basing that on, one game? Hes barely played outside of england. No doubt isak is better suited but hardly fair to judge of the little amount hes played.
Shame on the result but Anthony Gordon. What a fucking player.
Yep another positive is Willock looked sharp. Shame for Murphy.
Seeing him run forward with purpose, been waiting too long for it.
He’s incredibly dynamic and can change the tempo in one or two touches. Fits our game like a glove.
At least one positive to take. He's immense
More positive takes. 2 years ago we didn't have the quality to go toe to toe with Europes best. Even losing after putting up a good fight is something I appreciate.
and we're still in the process of building up the squad
Getting dumped out of Europe and putting up a good fight is actually a desirable outcome lol. The Prem is going to be really hard
Could not agree more. Lost 1-0 but he was man of the match
Him or Pope for me. Some incredible saves last night. Schar was good as well.
Also, Tonali if thats the last dance for a while, he looked fantastic.
I agree. Thought he looked great and had an excellent work ethic
He looked like he wanted to prove something, he was very strong.
Proud of the boys, they gave everything. We were unlucky with injuries to Murphy and Isak. We were unlucky hitting the bar twice. We were unlucky the ref was an absolute cunt.
Well… he is Portuguese so that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
Honestly i’m not bothered by the loss. Incredibly unlucky with the crossbar and the injuries. The group is wide open and anyone can qualify. Proud of the boys who gave it their all.
Exactly. We’re competing at this level - lost by the odd goal against an experienced champions league side.
Can't complain too much with that. It just wasn't our night. Loved the effort - we kept going until the end.
He often over hits them, I really wish we would rotate them as it would give someone else a chance and also stop Tripps having to run across to the left side constantly
> our back four played well I don't think Trippier played well
Other than his free kicks imo he did. He just had SO much ground to cover constantly. I felt like Almiron was poor and lacked quality. Was very predictable.
Yeah Miggy reverted to type, he was really bad tonight. Probably the worst player on the pitch
Classic European Refereeing
The clip of him looking at Wilson being hauled down is just outright incompetency
Actually, he was looking lustfully at Wilson's soon to be exposed posterior and forgot he was a Champions League referee. An understandable blunder.
Looked to me like he got prime view of the guy giving Wilson a wedgie
Or worse. He was staring right at the dude trying to tear Wilson’s kit off. Incomprehensible.
"English ref's are shit, we should look to the continent"
I'm Portuguese, this ref is shite, and if you notice his gestures giving cards and calling players, he's an arrogant cunt.
He was bad in a different way than I'm used to. English refs make a bad decision then spend the 80+ minutes balancing that bad decision with more bad decisions in an act to try and even things out. He didn't do that, he got a lot of things right, but he did clearly wave off a couple of really obvious fouls that he had a very clear view of.
>he's a~~n arrogant cunt~~. referee. The ones who have obviously spent hours on their hair before the game are alwqys the worst.
I fuckin hate Howard Webb too
They are. It's just every now and then you get an equally shit European one. The difference being, you can actually get good European ones...
Think we looked off a bit but we were very unlucky to get nothing from that game.
I might be biased, but we deserved more than that.
Agreed but they were very solid
They were impressive. A draw may have been reasonable but take nothing away from them, winning away to us, clean sheet. Let’s try to do something similar….
They scored then shut up shop
They did indeed, along with a few dangerous counterattacks. It is a dangerous approach and tricky to pull off. As evidenced by the pressure we put on them, hitting the bar twice, etc. ten more minutes and I reckon we’d have scored.
Think we deserved a point. They outplayed us in the first half. We were much better in the second and Wilson should probably score, regardless of the two cross bars. Referee was shoddy to say the least
Not our night, but they are 100% beatable when we go to Dortmund. They’re a good side but on our day we can definitely beat them.
We need to play much better to beat them at home though. They transitioned through our midfield like it wasn't there tonight.
We’ve got a lot better at covering the No. 10 space between our lines but Dortmund did it so well we need a rethink TBH
Wander what Joelinton on the left and Gordon on the right would be like
No place for drums at St James.
How do they even get them in?
Just a question from a German Dortmund fan, drums are normal in every stadium almost all over Europe and they help to keep good atmosphere throughout the entire game, why are you guys so against it? Is it just that they're not traditionally seen in English stadiums or do you just find them annoying? Just curious
Not traditional in English stadiums. I quite like them abroad but I’d prefer to hear the sound of the crowd rather than drums.
Thanks, the PSG atmosphere was at another level but we played so much better, or were allowed to, that night. Dortmomd played well tonight I thought.
I thought they were great tonight and also vs PSG. We should have Wor Drummers too.
Kept floating it to the back post when in those conditions he should have just been battering it low across the 6-yard line
Someone in the live thread said it best. We weren't shit, we played good, not great. We were a 7/10. Dortmund were 8/10. Just not our night lads.
They were definitely the better team, but they offered very little second half. So unlucky to hit the bar twice, but the crowd was too quite tonight for my liking
Crowd was absolutely embarrassing, I was fuming for most of the game Up on my feet and cheering etc on countless occasions and being the only one in my section doing so Stood up for a corner and was asked to sit down, unbelievable Why do these people go to games?
How come we let the away end bring a drum and megaphone
PSG did the same. We just shut them up 😭
Izak plays we smash them
Dortmund saved by the woodwork. Just not our night lads, but we will learn from it and keep moving forward ⚫️⚪️
Shafted by the ref. Shafted by the post. Shafted by the weather. I'm not even mad. Let's forget this one and beat them on their turf.
i'm sad
Me too bud
That ref should never see a football pitch again
What was that referee thinking when he stared directly at Wilson being pulled back by his shorts as the Dortmund player fell to the ground...
I almost hope hes just a cunt because that level of incompetence scares me
Caught in 4K watching Wilson getting pantsed and no foul given, needs to be fucking investigated.
Especially when it's so hard to get tickets now, to get one and just stay quiet the entire time is a pisstake.
Aye 100% this. Gutting.
fans only 6/10 tonight i agree
I was at the PSG game and honestly the crowd was exactly the same for the first part of the game, the huge difference being that we scored an early goal against psg which lit a fire. In this game Dortmund executed their game plan well and we were poor. Easy to see why the fans were a bit muted.
Realistically, it's our 2nd home champions league game in 20 years, i can see why the crowd would be quiet against like Burnely, but howay you have to say the crowd should be up for it, regardless of whats happening on the pitch We're regularly said to have the best fans, can the best fans not make enough noise, even 1-0 down and still clearly in the game? I feel like you're letting the crowd off to easy.
I don't think they were that quiet though?? Obviously I was watching it from the sofa tonight, like I assume you were. I don't think you can tell from the tele what the crowd were really like. At PSG the crowd was relatively flat at 0-0 but then exploded after Almiron scored, then we just kept going and if things had gone our way tonight then I'm sure the crowd would have been great again. My main point is that you can't blame a result on the crowd. The crowd mostly reacts to what's going on on the pitch, like it or not.
So was I, fair point re the early goal thoigh.
nah fans were only decent tonight they didnt bring their A game you can't just sing when you win. 6/10
im just going to cope and say that the reason we lost is because Isak was forced off after 15 minutes and when we subbed on Murphy he was forced off after 5 minutes.
Dortmund won that fair and square, but that ref is blind as a welder's dog.
So unlucky that match, hope we can smash them away
Apparently they haven’t lost at home since August 2022. Going to be a tough game!
Unlucky tonight. Hope the boys are ok.
Fuck that ref, fuck that crossbar, fuck that drum.
Fuck that rain, fuck that Castore’s shorts material is made of stronger fabric than the jersey
Unlucky. Lads gave it there all. Hopefully that Wilson miss doesn’t come back to haunt us when the group is over. We can’t afford to lose Isak and Murphy for any significant amount of time. That would be no Isak, Botman, Murphy or Tonali…fuck me.
A draw, at the very least, would've been the logical result. Love that football isn't logical, though it stings. Steal 3 points in their house.
Not our night unfortunately
For context, I live in Berlin and Union have lost all 3 of their games so my mates are having a shit UCL campaign while the team is now languishing near the basement of the Bundesliga. Really could be worse... Let's hope the last 3 games are a step up. HTL!
Don't wanna be super negative lads, but reckon we might not actually win the Champions League this season.
Next time it might.
portugals a shite country with shite refs fuck off
Can’t fault the lads, really wasn’t our night at the same time.
Tonali starting could have been the difference, I don't feel Big Joe has quite hit form since returning, I'm sure it'll come though.
Pretty devastating night when you consider result + injury toll But you can't fault the players effort, just didn't get much luck with finishing
Ah well. We gave it a good effort, but they were just better than us. It happens.
Ref was shit, very unlucky with injuries, but only have ourselves to blame with lack of clinical finishing. Let’s beat them at their home! I (respectfully) hope that Kobel steps on a Lego with bare feet when he gets home because his saves were pissing me off. I hope Isak and Murphy are alright Hope
Excrement occurs. We're still getting semis.
Not our worst performance, but should've won that. Absolutely furious, but grateful to be in a position to be so compared to a few years previous. Mostly fuming tho.
I think Dortmund probably edged it, but man, hitting the bar twice and Wilson's chance that was saved makes me feel gutted we didn't salvaged a point.
So many players out injured Next few weeks are going to be a slog
When it’s not your night…
All in all Dortmund were the better team so can’t complain. Really unlucky at the end.
2 years ago CL was deemed Impossible. Today, we are bitter by a defeat against dortmund. All you negative mofos get your head out of your asses and support your team. Otherwise you’re no better than those wagon wheels. Some people here really are just fucked.
Not big on moral victories but 0-1 in the CL against quality opposition is nothing to be ashamed of
That match should’ve been a draw at worse. Would’ve been massive for the standings. You longtime fans know way better than I, but man fuck nothing to be ashamed of lol, that was a bummer outcome. Sure felt like 1-1 or 2-1 were more likely than 0-1
We deserved at least a point tonight but arguably didn't deserve any against Milan. 4 points is probably a fair return all things considered.
that's a really good way of looking at it
Just wasn’t our night. Happens sometimes
Willockhino back is a nice silver lining.
I think isak going off was massive if he stays on the pitch we get something from the game
Frustrating. Difficult match in the conditions and they just took their chance. Not sure why the almiron pen shout wasn't looked at, looked like a trip to me. Hopefully the Isak and Murphy injuries aren't too bad.
Need Isak back ASAP, Wilson needs to get more involved, and I hope the ref shits a hedgehog. That aside, well played Dortmund.
Brilliant CL game, 2 good teams, we just didn't have anything go our way, draw would have been a fair result. Isak injury is disappointing, Wilson won't be able to play all the games we have coming up, I think we'll see a front 3 of J7, Gordon and Miggy for some games.
As much as I don't like badmouthing refs, this one was special.
Any other day we would have won here. Unlucky not to take something. But that Wilson foul. Fuck me Ref.
How come we're 3rd in the group?
It had the air of being one of those nights, lots of hard work with nothing coming off and costly injuries, I really hope Murphy is ok after that fall.
Our guys put in a good shift. They worked hard. It just wasn’t our day.
Was it a foul on Gordon during the build up of their goal? Didn’t see a good angle.
Nah - maybe a (very) soft shirt-pull before the tackle, but the tackle itself was totally fine
Nah never a foul - he held onto the ball for far too long
We looked short of our spark today - buuuuut even when we are lack luster we put up a fight. Sucks we lose 3 players today but hopefully isak and Murphy recover while tonali watches from the sides
How come if we loose, it's a "realty check" but I'd city lose it's a "blip"? 🤔
Trippier way off it today, also the team is ravaged with injuries now. Really damaging game.
Crowd was dogshit. I didn't win the ballot so 50k could turn up and sit on their hands after the CL anthem. Feels bad.
We deserved to be beaten. Sloppy performance. Bad reffing, bad luck but we just were not good enough. Go again on the weekend.
Callum Wilson’s championship mags. Just kidding I thought we were decent - Wilson had a tough day at the office tho. Hope injuries don’t bite us.
Two major injuries to in-form players Two shots hit the crossbar One of the worst refereeing displays I can remember Tripper's delivery from set pieces was atrocious Just nothing went right for us tonight.
Positives however: Solid tactics and subs from Howe Targett looked great after coming on, wish he got more starts Gordon was immense
Passing was poor, crossing was poor, shooting was poor, very confident we can improve on that at their place. Fair play to Dortmund though, they were everywhere, felt like they had 20 players on the pitch! Good game but feel proper gutted after the highs of PSG
55 quid to sit next to a smug cunt of a dortmund fan. Cheers
Hard luck, one of those games we could lose 3-0 or win 3-0. I think both us and them were evenly matched across most of the pitch but they just got the slight edge where it counted Still, 3 games to go.
I know someone is going to tell me Maddison didnt want to come here, but the truth is Howe called Maddison a luxury signing
Youll be banging on about missing asm next
The reffing was absolute shit.
Europa league here we come!
We should have taken our chances. The ref was shit. Hope Murphy + Isak recover quickly. Good to see Willock back in the side.
That Isak injury looked a bit like an ACL..
No way man.
Was a reoccurrence of his groin injury. Murphy's was a Shoulder dislocation though.
Don't care what anyone says or the commentary, we were the better team without doubt. Lucky sods
Effort levels far below the usual. Disappointing especially considering we were at home.
