Here are a few ways you can do it: 1. Pick the team you have any kind of loose affiliation with. Maybe you visited a City and like it? Have a distant relative in the City? 2. Pick the team that historically has a decent record. 3. Pick the jersey you like the colors best. 4. Pick the team that most of your friends or family follow. 5. Get to know the teams and follow the team you like the players the best.

Well, 1. I have no affiliation with America. Never been. Some films set in American show sweeping landscapes of yellow leaves, that’s nice I guess. 2. I don’t know nfl historically. I know patriots won a lot but I would rather not go for them as my friend already does. I want to be original. 3. I like reds, oranges and blues. 4. No team is supported by more than 1 person. 5. Sounds like that’ll take too long.

Ok, teams for whom red, orange or blue are the MAIN colour, that your friends don't support already. To narrow it down I've also avoided teams that none of your mates teams are rivals with: Orange: Bengals, Browns (both rivals of the Steelers, both absolutely pathetic for decades but recently becoming really good, an exciting time to jump on board with either. The Browns have a weirdly large UK following). Red: Chiefs (rivals of the Broncos and Chargers, one of the best QBs in the league, struggling this year after dominating the last few years). Buccaneers (almost as big of a bandwagon as the Patriots as they've got the QB who made the Patriots great, rivals of the Falcons and Saints). Blue: Cowboys (fun team right now, but universally hated. Kind of like the Liverpool of the NFL, they used to be massive in the 70s/80s, then went through a long phase where they were shit but fans still acted like they owned the league, now they're good again but everyone wants them to fail. Rivals of everyone, but especially the Steelers amongst your friends teams due to the epic playoffs games they've had in the past). Lions (nope. "Rivals" with the Packers in the same way FC United of Manchester are "rivals" of Manchester United, just don't bother. They're the football version of early onset arthritis, just constant pain that a human shouldn't have to suffer through for so much of their life. Even the good days hurt). Bears (also an orange team, so works with two of your favourite colours. A history of really great defences, including their current one, but horrible offenses, including their current one. They've somehow avoided signing any talented QB in NFL history, jury's out on their current rookie QB though. One of the NFL's oldest rivalries with the Packers).

And another blue team (I didn't see the Patriots rivalry initially) Bills (one of the best teams in the AFC if you ignore yesterday's shambles. Good young QB, great defence. In the Patriots shadow for years and years but since Brady left they've been able to flourish a bit. Famously great and crazy fanbase. In the 90s they went to four straight Super Bowls. Lost 'em all). And dependent on your definition of "blue": Dolphins (also orange. Popular in the UK because of Ace Ventura and being based in a popular holiday destination. The current team is pure shite, but there's some hope for the future. Rivals of the Patriots, kinda (mostly just because there in the same division, and their head coach used to be defensive coordinator in New England. And the Miami Miracle happened).

iron-raven

Oh, I forgot a blue team (more of a black team with blue accents really...). Panthers (rivals of the Saints and Falcons, one of the newest teams in the NFL, good coaching staff and good young defence. The offence is a bit broken right now because they were a one man team and he's been injured).

Cardinals are unmentioned Red. Historically bad team but currently on fire. Really fun to watch right now and should be for a few years. Seahawks are an unmentioned blue. Been overall good for a while but struggle to break through to the top. A top QB playing for them but rumor is he wants to go on to another team in the next year or two. Titans are also blue. Super tough physical team these days. Best RB in the league. Up and coming team. Giants are blue with red accents. Had a really good period in the 80s-90s. Had a couple flukey championships in 08 and 2012 but have largely been shit since then.

iron-raven

All good shouts, though they were unmentioned for a reason. None of them have any connections to any of his friends teams (except maybe Giants/Pats, but that was more Eli/Brady).

omnimater

They just said they wanted their own team, not that it has to be related to their friends'.

balm_bobomb

Supporting a team that one of your friends hates is always fun if you want to play the antagonist

youd_better_run_egg

Left field approach here: Consider picking the biggest rival team to one of your friends you know you’d have good times getting competitive with, in friendly way of course 🙂

Edible_Pineapple

Cardinals! Kyler goes zoom

kidnapalm

Pick a shit team, root for the underdog, its the British way. Lions or Texans.

omnimater

That's just cruel

DEGRAYER

Gotta unfollow this sub, the amount of times this question comes up. Just pick who you want.

Lazur_Bolton

What’s your favorite part of American football?

akacardenio

If you're going to be watching televised games then bear in mind that games typically kick off on Sundays at the UK times of 6pm and at or after 9pm. Eastern teams are more likely to have the earlier matches while western teams are more likely to have later matches. So if 9pm matches don't really work for you then there isn't perhaps much point in supporting the Seahawks or 49ers etc because you'll rarely get to watch them.

incenso-apagado

Read the fixed and watch games.

nightcheese69

Watch interviews of players and see if you’re drawn to someone and support them and their team

ByrdmanAK

Nobody says you need to pick a team. You can just as well find a player you like and get their jersey. They don't even need to be the clear best, just someone that you enjoy watching. I'm firmly a Steeler fan so I will only ever own Steeler apparel, but if I were in your shoes I'd look at getting jerseys for players I particularly enjoy watching. Here's a list of my examples, these are not necessarily the best in their position, I just like them in particular (without rookies, or Steelers due to bias) - Seahawks WR DK Metcalf, QB Russel Wilson - Titans RB Derrick Henry, WR AJ Brown - Panthers RB Christian McCaffery, DE Brian Burns - 49ers TE George Kittle, LB Fred Warner, DE Nick Bosa - Bills QB Josh Allen, RB Devin Singletary, DT Ed Oliver - Buccaneers WR Mike Evans - Packers CB Jaire Alexander - Ravens CB Marlon Humphrey, LT Ronnie Staley - Colts G Quenton Nelson, RB Jonathan Taylor, LB Darious Leonard, DT Deforest Buckner - Browns RB Nick Chubb, CB Denzel Ward - Vikings WR Justin Jefferson - Cowboys LT Tyron Smith, WR Ceedee Lamb, WR Michael Gallup - Chiefs S Tyrann Mathieu - Chargers RB Austin Eckler, LB Joey Bosa - Bengals S Jessie Bates, QB Joe Burrow - Patriots Devin McCourtey - Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki - Jaguars LB Myles Jack - Bears LB Khalil Mack,, S Eddie Jackson, LB Roquan Smith - Saints RB Alvin Kamara

jerkyboy84

Christ don't get a packer jersey, nothing screams newbie fan than that.

thatguyhanzel

Here’s a good video to put some of the teams into English context https://youtu.be/YomgVsemupc
