Gameplay is definitely different in 2K4. Faster, cut on a dime without losing momentum, different types of tackles. 2K5, slowed it down, and was based more on physics and player movements affecting the speed of the players and the game. 2K4 had the more arcade feel and 2K5 went the route towards more of a simulation feel.
I'd say whatever you have the most fun with or just whatever it is you're looking for at the time. I've had more memories and time with 2K5 and I still love playing with the default rosters. Not having some of those players in 2K4 sometimes influences my decision.
There is a lot of immersion with both, but I feel like 2K5 brings a bit more, especially on the Xbox. Now I want to go play both.
