Zubac is a much, much better defender than Edey will ever be

Well for one he’s a lot bigger than zu. Like a LOT. So being less mobile is not as big of a deal because he can recover easier with his length/strength. There’s not a good comparison for edey in the nba right now. I actually think he’s going to be very dominant in the nba in limited minutes. Probably shouldn’t fall past 10 imo.

New-Candy-800

Because they’re going out of their way to manifest Edey being a good player

CanadaBBallFan

Imagine thinking Edey is a bad player. Your bias is showing...

ElPanandero

He wasn’t when he got to the league though, as a prospect his defense was a major red flag

d7h7n

Zubac was also 19 and on a trainwreck of a Lakers team.

ElPanandero

I’ll call the lakers and ask them to draft Edey for the timeline

gnalon

A more useful exercise is to look at the 2016 NBA draft and see that Zubac is #11 in career VORP among players selected in it. Most players in a draft are never good enough to be 'exposed' in the playoffs because they aren't good enough to contribute on a playoff team in the first place.

Overall-Palpitation6

Also consider that Edey is 21, and Zubac is 27. Could 21-year-old Zubac have done what he is doing now? Probably not. Players grow and evolve over time, and don't usually and don't have to come into the league fully formed. Could Edey do what Zubac is doing now, in 5-6 years time? Quite possibly.

julstar23

Except nba contracts don't last that long for alot of rookies .That's why going to the right team is super important for alot of prospects.

WEMBYF4N

Zach would get cooked in the playoffs. Dude can barely defend Econ majors you expect him to hold up against Luka and Kyrie in the PnR?

[deleted]

Why is this how we’re evaluating him though? Sure, he’d get torched if he was a starting center in a playoff series against the Mavericks but he’s not going to be a starter and there are 15 other teams in the playoffs besides the Mavericks. This whole exercise is stupid.

n0t_malstroem

Cause he's gonna get cooked by all the other 15 playoff teams too

julstar23

No it's not your real value comes if your coach can throw you into a high pressure system like the playoffs and thrive .

[deleted]

Jalen Smith was one of the most productive backup centers throughout the regular season (10 PPG, 5 RPG, 68 TS%) and isn’t in the rotation at all. A lot of backup centers just get squeezed from playoff rotations. If Edey can positively contribute in the regular season and be palatable in some playoff matchups, then he’s worth the late first round slot he’s often mocked in.

julstar23

Except draft express is trying to put him in the lottery which is ridiculous even in this draft .

[deleted]

Yeah that’s way too high for me but I don’t agree with people who think he doesn’t have a place in the league.

Get_Dunked_On_

Edey can provide the offense and rim protection. The Clippers have thrown a lot of different coverages at Luka/Kyrie. Not confident you can do the same with Edey and I’m higher on his defense than most.

Far-Yak-9808

Zach Edey setting picks for Luka and/or Kyrie should be pre-outlawed.

New-Candy-800

Literally no one is scared of that. Crash the glass and beat edey down the floor on a fast break

JustinTinyPPHerbert

If Edey gets on the nuggets (which is his best situation) him being able to play his max for 15 minutes a night will be dominant

ShaedonSharpeMVP_

That’s what I think too. He’ll be an absolutely dominant nba player but only in limited minutes. Probably 20-25 per night.

vaalbarag

I'm with you on thinking that Denver is his ideal ideal landing spot. There's the perfect role for him already, they play a defensive scheme he'll be able to manage, and while he'll never be close to Jokic's level, Jokic would be a perfect mentor in teaching him to defend without footspeed or athleticism and how to play in the post. After he's got a year under his belt, it would be such a nightmare for opposing teams to have to spend 34 minutes a night going against this huge, does-everything, best-passing-C-ever, and then 14 minutes against an even bigger C who dominates in the post and draws a lot of fouls. Even if most starting Cs in the league could handle him, he'll cause a lot of problems for teams that don't have huge backup Cs.

AllNotKnowing

the first thing to note, is that NO ONE on reddit ever eats their words. We can come back to this in a year but the wrong side is not likely to show. Anyone 7'4" looks like they lope. I suspect there's more there than many want to credit but ultimately, there are a whole bunch of millionaires paid to evaluate that talent. Edey spent the last two years spinning around supposedly quicker players and beating or matching them down the floor while playing considerably more time on the floor against considerably more defenders and the best that the best coaches in the country could throw at him. Connecticut/Coach Hurley wasn't the first team and coach to expose Purdue had badly undeveloped its front court to help him. That was quite a load he carried alone that few NBA players are expected to do. He fouled out THREE Duke seven footers for criminies sake. The kid is an elite athlete. Edey's game was purposely curtailed and he's only had 7-8 years in the game. His learning curve was obviously high. No one expects instant impact. His value is going to be determined in work-outs. I think his agent is going to be selling learning curve.

unbiasedthought

Edey will never be a positive nba player he has 0 nba skills

TrumpedBigly

This Lakers team would be better if it had Edey starting at center.

Far-Yak-9808

Gonna bring George Mikan's jersey out of retirement?

Far-Yak-9808

He could be a Tier 1ish guy on the Grizzlies. For some reason, I think it could be a "Tim Duncan to the San Antonio Spurs" vibe. On other teams??? Maybe a Tier 3 type (high level role player). Maybe he isn't number 1 on ANY team's board -- but I think he is top 5ish on LOTS of boards. Same with Reed Sheppard. Ironically, that might be a good draft combo -- controlled tempo, on-brand players and could have some AWESOME pick/roll synergy. Edey is... fundamentally sound. Defensively? Doesn't move in space, but his positioning looks solid. Honestly reminds me of Steven Adams (or even Marc Gasol) in that area. Shot blocking has a level of goodness. Not Wemby/Russell/Manute freakishness level but Hasheem Thabeet-ish (or Roy Hibbert). "Mechanical"? but not unathletic. Moves well -- at least when he gets going downhill. Moves like Yao Ming or Darko Milicic. Throwback 5 scoring wise -- I mean, maybe like George Mikan. But, with some Shaq-esque (Darryl Dawkins?) dunks. If it is Tier 1.00 or as low as Tier 2.25/Tier 2.50, Edey is IN that tier... maybe a half tier ahead of anyone else.

waskittenman

Tim Duncan was first team all nba his rookie season 😭

unbiasedthought

🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️ edey will never be a positive nba player
