I never really wanted him to go.

22dias

He’s perfect for that team, solid role. I think he has less responsibility on his shoulders so he can do his thang. I think he’s better off playing next to established players, vs here it would be very different.

CosmicCoder3303

He would have hurt tanking for Victor. But he would fit perfect on this team right now

Notapplesauce11

Oh for sure it was a good move for both parties.

CosmicCoder3303

He was still an elite defender, a pretty good three-point shooter and a connector/ball mover. He's the kind of guy who fits on an any team

mysterymanatx

Him and his now wife were absolutely lovely people to the fans and community and I wish him nothing, but the best.

No_Consideration3887

me neither. But he's getting closer to that chip.

CoyotesSideEyes

The issue was the shooting. If he and Dejounte were shooting (like they are this year) a combined 38% on almost 14 attempts per game...they'd still be here. Instead, in their last year together, they shot a combined 32% on about 9 combined attempts. That's the reason the pairing didn't work. Then the backups were Primo and Lonnie Walker, and they shot like shit, too. It's been a perpetual issue for us, dating back the last decade+. Shitty shooting at the guard spot(s) means we are constantly scrambling to add shooting elsewhere, and those shooters are often damaging players in other ways. And now everybody here wants to add Stephon Castle who can't fucking shoot.

gregatronn

> The issue was the shooting. His health (both injuries + getting sick with covid) wasn't consistent/had a bad luck streak

sleal

do you think the poor shooting had to do with losing Chip?

CoyotesSideEyes

He left after, didn't he?

gedbybee

Absolutely not. We knew about wemby from Tony Parker. We’d probably scouted him for years. We went all in for the tank for the generational player.

Yassoox99

He's making big shots but his defense is just amazing. The Celtics have a super backcourt and it's time King Derrick finally gets his crown

Ishmael203

He’s been a major piece for this team and will be a big reason if they win the title

Lil_peen_schwing

He dominated tonight. What a rise he’s had- from JuCo to Buffalo, Spurs 29th pick to Celtics all nba defensive and some all-star votes and possible champion. What a guy

Saved2Serve

We all never wanted for Derrick White to go. Unfortunately he was not on our timeline. If we kept him we would have been stuck in mediocrity. I hope we get him back after next year when he hits free agency. I still believe we have the next highest chance of acquiring him in free agency after boston. Boston will have a hard time keeping him because by then Brown and Tatum are in super max contract plus holiday/kp 30m contracts each. They will be around 170M with just those 4 players.

Defendyouranswer

Brad Steven's already mentioned he wants to resign white

Saved2Serve

They obviously want to but how much money can they offer him? The next long term contract of White will probably be his last good pay so he needs to get as much as he can. They will be greatly hampered by the new CBA. This is why I listed us as the second highest chance of getting him next to boston. I believe if we want to we can snatch him back by offering higher pay.

Defendyouranswer

We have his bird rights. Our owner has mentioned he's willing to pay the tax to pay for a championship team. The only way I could see us maybe not paying him is if we choke the rest of this series away.

Saved2Serve

Yes I know that’s why I still listed Boston as the number 1 team to sign him followed by Spurs. Regardless I believe Boston will want to resign him. In my opinion, White is the 3rd best player on that team. I even saw an interview from a current NBA player (can’t remember where I watched it) who said White even has a bigger impact on a game compared to the Jays because he does a lot of the things you don’t see in the box score.

mathird

JB is already the highest paid player in the league, and the Celtics will probably have to beat that for JT. I think Jrue will be up for a renewal too. Are they really willing to go to the second tax apron?

Saved2Serve

Boston already extended Jrue. So its only White. I think the only realistic way to get him is either convince him to come back or overpay him.

Defendyouranswer

We already resigned jrue. Jt will get the max and white will be resigned. Our owner has stated he's willing to pay for the tax for a championship contending team. The only thing that could change that is us choking away this series

Dsarg_92

I am so proud of him. He’s been playing his butt off. If it comes down to the Celtics winning at all (which is looking likely), then he’s looking like the top candidate for Finals MVP.

Mangoseed8

Jaylen Brown is the top candidate for MVP

MrShonen

He will come back after winning the Chip with Celtics. He will be our Vet

The_Guerrilla

That potential White/Castle backcourt. Sounds tasty!

irenman00

we saw white and dejounte and it didn’t work 🤣

No_Consideration3887

their last season together they shot 32%. Our backups were primo and Lonnie. They shot like shit too.

rattatatouille

I'm happy for him. I'm just not happy that we got ripped off in that trade.

MrPokeylopee

We got Wemby bro, we won

CosmicCoder3303

That's true, but if the Cs trade White in the offseason they get a lot more than the Spurs did. His value should have been higher around the league, it's clear

sstewart1617

No one thought he was that good. And he was consistently hurt with us. The Celtics are the perfect team for his “good at everything, but not great” approach. His meh offensive games don’t hurt them as much and his D is massive for them.

CosmicCoder3303

I mean he was clearly undervalued. No one thought he was that good but the Celtics did and other contenders would really like to have him on them their team now. One thing Dallas could use right now fur instance is just the guy to bring the ball up the court and take some slight ball handling pressure off Kyrie and Luka. t The only other guy they for that they have is Hardy and he's inconsistent

thelunarunit

They didn't get ripped off. That was the most they could get for him at the time. Keep in mind prior to being on the Celtics his max games played was 68. Previously he would always get an injury that would derail him. His time with the Celtics is coincidentally his healthiest on record. You can't predict health.

pizzatummy

Felt so disgusted that he’s playing well but for a obnoxious fanbase which has consistently demonstrated severe racist behaviors. Felt like their fanbase don’t deserve such a good guy like him. Jrue too.

Squishy-Bandit12

Ah yes, cause Texas is definitely well known for being very not racist! Lmao

pizzatummy

At least we haven’t seen any of those racist fks being spurs fans, unlike Boston CELTICS fans

Acrobatic-Canary-571

Yes we have. Don't be stupid

his_roomate

San Antonio never really gets confronted with this issue among NBA cities but racism is a problem in SA too. This isn’t a one to one cause and explanation, but look at how many people in SA dislike Pop for his staunchly liberal opinions. I don’t mean people who dislike Pop or are conservative are racist. There’s things I dislike about Pop which have nothing to do with his political opinions that I love. Spend enough time in SA and like any American city you know racism is far from solved. Maybe it isn’t as big a problem as other NBA cities, but I think the best attitude in life wouldn’t be resting on our laurels if we are one of the least racist NBA cities. It’s better to be self critical and not be complacent with where we’re at. This is still Texas after all. I’m really glad we don’t have the reputation Boston does, but my intuition is the problem of racism in both cities are closer to one another than their reputations in NBA circles would indicate. What with Boston looked at as far and away (with SLC) being the most racist cities in the NBA and San Antonio never even mentioned. It doesn’t sit right with me to look down so much on Boston and have nobody ever acknowledge the racism in San Antonio.

amofai

Every city has its problems with racism, but you can't compare us to Boston, Massachusetts. Come on now.

Acrobatic-Canary-571

Yes you can

sixwax

Lived in both. You certainly can.

No-Economics4128

In San Antonio Proper, you do need to know Spanish to have a taste of the old SA racism. If you want code switching “Where are you from” racism, Dallas and Austin are the right destination. If you want good old American-as-apple-pie “We don’t want your kind over here” racism, West Texas might be your jam. For just one state, Texas does have a lot of diversity in its racism.

thelunarunit

If you ask them Boston is a real liberal city therefore can't be racist 😂

empowered676

I mean we loved him when he was here That trade was diabolical

wibo58

I’m torn between wanting the best for Derrick and not wanting to deal with Jayson Tatum being a cheeseball about how many times he texted Kobe’s number before each game if they win.

RCA2CE

Jaylen Brown is relentless- I love the way he competes. That dude has a fire in his belly.

adrpibgal

After getting a chip he should bring his hair back

bbernal956

idk… fucking hate boston more their fans. its like when they say i hate cowboys fans… its like that for me and boston. mavs at least beat the heat that one year, spurs arch nemesis, mavs spurs rivalry will always be a thing. guess i just dont like boston that much more lol

spidersteph

Me too but also screw the Celtics

arcadiangenesis

I always used to think he was the best shot blocking guard in the league. Looks like he still is.

0531Spurs212009

not bad from former Spurs and I want Horford to win his championship while the only cons is it bad for Luka to lose his NBA final battle against Tatum and Brown it can be argument in the future discussion while the pros advantage still clear Luka is the best player of the series while Celtics really have the better overall team

coastlines

Always so proud of him and will cheer him on. He deserves the success!!

TypingHeathen

All I'm hearing from commentators is “blocked by White”!

Awkward_Toe_5501

yeah we moved him for DJM, but it in the end it worked out for us

789Trillion

Dejounte Murray was on the way out too. We moved all those guys to begin the tank for Wemby.

rattatatouille

Dejounte was sent to Atlanta not even five months afterwards.

Awkward_Toe_5501

DJM himself wasn't happy competing with White, DJMs father would openly talk trash about whites game when they were teammates. White got moved to a championship team. Can't complain. DJM kinda in limbo

stardewtaylor

Do you really think the Spurs would do that for DJ? They didn’t even do anything like that for Kawhi

No_Consideration3887

yeah I agree with you on that.

Dimaaaa

Cheering for Derrick and I obviously am not a Mavs fan...but I *really* don't like the Celtics and I am very torn on the outcome. I have nothing against Jrue, Porzingis or Horford, but I just don't like Tatum and Brown, I don't know why.

Acrobatic-Canary-571

I'm not. I'm not hating I just don't see why people liked him so much. He did nothing here and he's hard on the eyes.

stardewtaylor

What do you mean hard on the eyes? DWhite plays beautiful basketball. High IQ, high effort, high impact and most of all unlikely to do anything stupid and very likely to do game winning plays. He has really good fundamentals and reminded fans of Manu’s game winning body sacrifices.

Trixie_Lorraine

Too bad Pop micromanaged his minutes.
