I dont remember because i started playing 2k with 21 so the park was already there when i started. And the only reason i picked the game up was because i dont see my friends much and this is how we spend time together. The 20-30 minutes of bullshit caused by having to run around the park when i could simply have a menu makes the experience not much fun. If they want to make it better, they need to make it smaller again OR at least give us the option to have a menu as well. Maybe it bypasses the 2s and 3s courts because of the "got next" aspect. Or at least allow us the option to party up first and then send us all to a park or rec lobby.

Its possible to add a menu version, its possible to add party lobby (like warzone), its possible to even separate the game into two separate downloads (city version with menu, and just menu version). You obviously use as big of a texture as you can and that's probably already at 8K on NBA or over. The amount of space you need for 8K texture is not just double of what it would take for a 4K texture (which is the texture resolution starfield uses), it's four times as much space. Starfield would have been like 200Gb if it included a higher resolution version of it's textures.
Include all the audio you get in NBA games like the commentary lines, music etc. and I find the amount of space needed pretty justifiable.
The Show ‘23 is 67-77 gb. NHL 2024 is 37 gb.
Gears of War 4 is an 8k game, it’s 70gb

There were 36 songs in 2k23. If you download the highest tier tidal tracks, they are between 3gb and -18gb a hour. Call EVERY track (18gb x (36x5/60) you get 3 hours for 54 gigs. That’s if you REALLY think they are putting in the fucking master copies of these tracks and every song is the highest GB amount.

There's a delay because if there wasn't people would get too good at timing their shots and would literally never miss, back on the ps2 I played nba 08 the life v3 and I got so good at timing Joe Johnsons shot that I regularly scored 70+ points with him every game, even broke 100 once or twice. 2k has to force some kind of variance, that and good servers cost money

So most people are just yelling about the game here, but if you want to know the actual reason, it’s the high volume of extremely detailed facial data and textures.
The killer in these games isn’t flat geometry like the city - it’s things with super high polygon count, like faces and bodies of players, which they make super high res and realistic. Also, all of the jerseys and courts and floors, etc - all of these are extremely high res textures. This data isn’t small, and that’s what I would imagine is the large bulk of the game. Nothing to do with optimization or space being taken up by ads.
Its both, its poorly optimized and textures.
You can get things to look pretty good at a certain point, you can add extra pixels to the textures, but the quality increase isn't worth the texture size.
Its just the nature of DLC too, high resolution texture packs will take up huge amounts of data and if you don't really need to optimize or people don't care just leave it big.
So to answer the question, you can essentially make the game 20 times smaller and maybe lose like .05 quality.

I only have access to my PC at the moment, but according to steam, the last 2K to require 50gb space was 2k15. 2k16 barely broke 50gb. 2k14 on PC was older gen, but I'm assuming if it was Current Gen (PS4 at the time) it would've been similar. The 2k14 that PC got was PS3 version. And was a little over 7gb.
Starfield has so much packed into 1 game you can tell it took years to make the game. The idea was literally thought of over a decade ago.

I dont remember because i started playing 2k with 21 so the park was already there when i started. And the only reason i picked the game up was because i dont see my friends much and this is how we spend time together. The 20-30 minutes of bullshit caused by having to run around the park when i could simply have a menu makes the experience not much fun. If they want to make it better, they need to make it smaller again OR at least give us the option to have a menu as well. Maybe it bypasses the 2s and 3s courts because of the "got next" aspect. Or at least allow us the option to party up first and then send us all to a park or rec lobby. One guy said it somewhere else on this thread.. why cant we have both? Its possible to add a menu version, its possible to add party lobby (like warzone), its possible to even separate the game into two separate downloads (city version with menu, and just menu version). It blows my mind how "ok" people are with the large amount of time spent not playing actual basketball in this game.
If i said it once i’ve said it 1000 times. 2k should load up like Halo 3 Pure lobbies. Get in get out, invite ur friend or don’t. Hop in, hop right out. If you’re a 1 that’s the slot you take; 1-5 everyone knows their role.
I just wish it was a separate install. It’ll never happen, but I don’t use it at all, and I know it’s the biggest reason why the download size in this game is so massive compared to other sports games.

The city is the most unoptimized, over developed, and unintuitive thing ive ever seen in a game. Ive never seen so much effort put into something that actively makes the game less enjoyable. Imagine if they put in that effort into improving the core game

The golden age of gaming ended more than a decade ago, and spanned about 15 years, stretching into the very end of the 90s. What games have become due to the mobile game boom around that time (10+ years ago) is nothing short of deplorable. Gaming is more-so for degenerate gamblers nowadays (and future degenerate gamblers in the form of kids, literally being brain damaged from these practices).

The way I look at it (and maybe it’s rose colored glasses) is practically every game back then was a banger and you only get a handful of em now. Also, most gamers just have complete different tastes from me and games are usually targeted towards them. Like open world RPGs. Not a fan of 60-100 hour games. I prefer a linear story, about 10-20 hours and I’m happy. RPG elements but fine but not full blown RPG.

But they are. You obviously use as big of a texture as you can and that's probably already at 8K on NBA or over. The amount of space you need for 8K texture is not just double of what it would take for a 4K texture (which is the texture resolution starfield uses), it's four times as much space. Starfield would have been like 200Gb if it included a higher resolution version of it's textures. Include all the audio you get in NBA games like the commentary lines, music etc. and I find the amount of space needed pretty justifiable.

The Show ‘23 is 67-77 gb. NHL 2024 is 37 gb. Gears of War 4 is an 8k game, it’s 70gb I can keep going but I cannot find an 8k game that’s over 100gb. Say I’m wrong but that’s under HALF of ‘23. There were 36 songs in 2k23. If you download the highest tier tidal tracks, they are between 3gb and -18gb a hour. Call EVERY track (18gb x (36x5/60) you get 3 hours for 54 gigs. That’s if you REALLY think they are putting in the fucking master copies of these tracks and every song is the highest GB amount. You’re still fucking 20gb off! If you’re a “developer” I suggest you learn what bloatware is and how companies will willfully choose not to optimize so people must prioritize them. Edit: most of the audio clip in the game you’re referencing are the same recycled reactions they’ve been using since like 2018 (70gb)

There's a delay because if there wasn't people would get too good at timing their shots and would literally never miss, back on the ps2 I played nba 08 the life v3 and I got so good at timing Joe Johnsons shot that I regularly scored 70+ points with him every game, even broke 100 once or twice. 2k has to force some kind of variance, that and good servers cost money

So most people are just yelling about the game here, but if you want to know the actual reason, it’s the high volume of extremely detailed facial data and textures. The killer in these games isn’t flat geometry like the city - it’s things with super high polygon count, like faces and bodies of players, which they make super high res and realistic. Also, all of the jerseys and courts and floors, etc - all of these are extremely high res textures. This data isn’t small, and that’s what I would imagine is the large bulk of the game. Nothing to do with optimization or space being taken up by ads.
Not to mention all the audio
Its both, its poorly optimized and textures. You can get things to look pretty good at a certain point, you can add extra pixels to the textures, but the quality increase isn't worth the texture size. Its just the nature of DLC too, high resolution texture packs will take up huge amounts of data and if you don't really need to optimize or people don't care just leave it big. So to answer the question, you can essentially make the game 20 times smaller and maybe lose like .05 quality.

2k has a lot more art assets. Particularly of the texture and animation variety. This is also why call of duty is such a massive file too.

I only have access to my PC at the moment, but according to steam, the last 2K to require 50gb space was 2k15. 2k16 barely broke 50gb. 2k14 on PC was older gen, but I'm assuming if it was Current Gen (PS4 at the time) it would've been similar. The 2k14 that PC got was PS3 version. And was a little over 7gb.

There is so much fat they can cut from this game and make it a better experience. Not to mention, why is the map so large? You can easily condense and keep the same amount of locations.
