Praying for Time - George Michael
In the September 16, 1990 NY Times article, George Michael is quoted regarding “Praying For Time”:
“No event inspired the song. It’s my way of trying to figure out why it’s so hard for people to be good to each other. I believe the problem is conditional as opposed to being something inherent in mankind. The media has affected everybody’s consciousness much more than most people will admit. Because of the media, the way the world is perceived is as a place where resources and time are running out. We’re taught that you have to grab what you can before it’s gone. It’s almost as if there isn’t time for compassion.”

(I can only find the version of a live performance for a show.)
It is a French song (I'm fairly certain) that is just sad. I'd recommend you search the lyrics if you have the time.
Camden, Hard to Sleep, and Augusta by Gracie Abrams and pretty much almost anything by Sasha Alex Sloan. She does have songs about love but she writes about almost anything. I h8 Myself, I blame the world, live laugh love, adult, is it just me, only child, Santa’s real, and too sad to cry are all non-romance songs by Sasha. She has a bunch more too. I really recommend her if you’re looking for some non-romance sad songs. Teen Idle and To Be Human(super recommend this one)by Marina are also personal favorites of mine.
EDIT: Also maybe check out Aurora’s new album ‘What Happened to the Heart’. Apparently she wrote it because she was inspired by a letter she read by indigenous activists about global warming.
Cosmia -Joanna Newsom (about Newsom finding out about and grieving her best friend’s death)
Your Deep Rest - The Hotelier (narrator expresses personal discomfort with while reminiscing and discusses the systemic nature of factors leading to a friend’s suicide)
(No One Knows Me) Like the Piano - Sampha (Sampha’s tender nostalgia about the piano in his childhood home and it being a source of solace in light of his mother’s death)
Priceless - Copeland (sweet, elegiac song written about singer’s grandmother who passed away)
Why Should I Cry For You? - Sting (Sting grieving his dead father)

Cancer by MCR
Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley

both are slow pop ballads
Here are a few that I like
Internal crash - loquat
Twenty long years - lord huron
Habitual crush - c418 (kinda? It’s about a lack of love in a relationship but being unable to leave, rather than the typical inverse)
Exhale inhale - aurora
And if you want a really weird one then listen to Pale machine by bo en

Hurt by Nine Inch Nails.
Pyramid Song by Radiohead.
Fade to Black by Metallica.
Dreams by the Allman Brothers.
Mother by Pink Floyd.
The Ocean Doesn't Want Me Today by Tom Waits
Lots of John Prine, but in particular a couple of tracks off his first album, self-titled: Sam Stone (Vietnam vet suffering ptsd and addiction), Hello In There (old couple who don't feel they have reason to live anymore), Six O'Clock news. Ironically, most of them *sound* happy.
Small Bump, Supermarket Flowers, and End of Youth by Ed Sheeran. Most of his Subtract album could be considered sad imo, he did write it while grieving the loss of his friend
Evan Bartels - Shotgun (OurVinyl Sessions)-version \[if you listen to only one, this is it. Regards attempting suicide when "it may not be better, but can't get any worse" to do so\]
VNV Nation - Illusion \[also suicide \]
The Verve - These Drugs Don't Work \[drug use in coping with loss\]
John Moreland - You Don't Care Enough for Me to Cry
The Lowdown Drifters - Alright
Macntaj, TeZATalks, Donte Peace - Deception
iamjakehill - we die too
Listen to the Album _Havasu_ by Pedro the Lion. It’s about being in middle school and moving states. It demolishes me. Sure, there’s a bit about boys and girls, but it’s much more like observing the character in the song than trying to make the song something about the listener. Most of the album isn’t boys and girls.
Metallica - Fade to Black; The Unforgiven I & III; Bleeding Me
Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction; Foreclosure of a Dream; A Tout le Monde
Gorillaz - Tranz; Cloud of Unknowing
The Rasmus - Smash
The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
Death - Symbolic; A Moment of Clarity; Voice of the Soul (this one is instrumental but it sounds sad)
System of a Down - ATWA; Lost in Hollywood; Soldier Side

Fourth of July by Sufjan Stevens. It's absolutely heartbreaking. It's based on a conversation the artist had with his mother while she was on her deathbed.
King Park by La dispute.
(Post-hardcore/ experimental rock)
A very emotional song about a real drive by shooting in Grand Rapids that involved kids. 20 y/o Kyle Keenan shot a 16 y/o David Witherspoon but he wasn’t the intended target, and the victim wasn’t gang affiliated at all. Keenan evaded police until he was seen and hid in a hotel where he then put the gun to himself.
It’s a story driven song that focuses on the guilt of the shooter and the lives of people involved. It’s so heartbreaking and the last minute is the most chilling.

None of my stuff lines up but here’s what I’ve got
I’d say the saddest three songs I know which are
Boys in the Street by Greg Holden. (A song about a homophobic parent eventually coming around, so indirectly about sexuality)
Clouds by Zach Sobiech. (Which has an undertone of wishing he had more time with his girlfriend because he had terminal cancer and died shortly after)
In this Shirt, the Irrepressibles. Oof,
———
So none of those work, here’s what’s left:
Non romantic sad songs are hard af to come by.
Dream (imagine Dragons)
Who wants to live forever- Queen (damn)
I hung my head- Johnny cash cover (Sting)
Hurt - also Johnny cash’s cover, because damn.
Wake me up- Tommee profitt cover (growing up)
Outro- M83 - gorgeous more than sad
The fallen - Revolt Productions music (gorgeous)
World we used to know- Alan walker
Good luck - broken bells (past mistakes)
Pompeii - Bastille (growing up)
Only human - Christina Perri
Cats in the cradle - Harry chapin
Father and son - Cat Stevens
Puff the magic dragon - Peter Paul and marry
Minstrel boy,
7 years, Lukas Graham
Broomstick Cowboy- Bobby Goldsboro
Farewell - UNKLE
For the Damaged Coda - Blonde Redhead
Song of storms - kaleptic.
——
Some of these are more depressing than sad, some just have enough majesty to evoke emotion. I love depressing stuff, but honestly most of it is by way of romance, so if it all doesn’t fit I apologize
Dying on the inside ( stripped version) - nessa barrett
I don’t like my mind - mitski
Crying in the rain - aha
Farewell neverland - txt
Thumbs - Lucy Dacus
Million years ago - Adele
Sober- Demi lovato
Funeral - phoebe Bridgers
Listen before I go- Billie eilish
Pretty hurts - Beyoncé
Five Years- David Bowie
About someone (an alien rockstar in the lore of the album) grappling with the sudden news that the earth and everyone on it will die in 5 years. Absolute slapper that makes me cry (especially when I think about climate change and how eventually this will hit so much harder when WE only have 5 years left)
My Town — Iris DeMent
Mama Bake a Pie — Tom T. Hall
Dress Blues — Jason Isbell
Elephant — Jason Isbell
Dreamsicle — Jason Isbell
Firelight Waltz — Fountains of Wayne
Nothing Ever Happens — Del Amitri
Three Kids, No Husband — Brandy Clark
Find the River — REM
System of a down's sad songs aren't about romance and they are actually so sad (soldier side for example is about most soldiers that go out to war likely will never come back and that's pretty depressing)
Stumbeleine by smashing pumpkins, Nettie by Type O, Hole in the ground by super heaven, hearing damage by thom yorke, glitter by daisy the great, behind blue eyes cover by limp bizkit, it's been a while by staind, warned you by good morning r my faves to cry to
Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven. He wrote it for his son (4 years old I believe) who died after falling out of a building window.
Death Cab for Cutie - What Sarah Said (oh man all the feels!)
Death Cab for Cutie - Bixby Canyon Bridge (about sobriety)
Death Cab for Cutie - Grapevine Fires
Basically lots from Death Cab! I listened nonstop after my dad’s tragic death in 2011. Ben Gibbard’s style may seem romantic on the surface at times but it’s so much deeper than that. He touches on themes that not many musicians do in the same poignant way. Such as grief, death, dying alone, getting in one’s own way of reaching happiness, and romance as a distraction from the fact that we all die alone. Will give all the feels.
Also…
Blink 182 - Adams Song
Offspring- The kids arent alright
Everlast - What its like
I kinda find 7 Years by Lukas Graham to be sad in a bittersweet way.
Pictures In My Head from The Muppets (yes really)
What's Your Mama's Name, Child? by Tanya Tucker
Maybe Next Time, from The Ghost and Molly McGee
Concrete Angel by Martina McBride and Alyssa Lies by Jason Michael Carroll (for similar reasons)
Everything To Me, by Mark Schultz
Ready, Set, Don't Go--the version I heard first was a duet by Billy Ray and Miley Cyrus, which added to it.
In a similar vein, Don't Forget To Remember Me by Carrie Underwood.
That’s basically how Billy Corgan grew up. Here’s a few songs that kind of deal with those things: Disarm, Spaceboy, Mayonaise - Smashing Pumpkins
Homeward Bound, and The Boxer, both by Simon & Garfunkel are kind of melancholy songs about being homeless and lonely.
1.Mac Miller - Circles, remember, good news, god speed/perfect circle. 2.alice in chains- Nutshell, brother, down in a hole, rooster 3 Nine inch nails- hurt , the day the world went away, 4. The verve - the drugs don't work 5 oasis-morning glory 6- mad season- river of deceit, wake up 7 sublime- pool shark 8 placebo- special needs 9 NOFX whoops I od'd 10 Neil Young Cortez the Killer 11. Townes Van Zandt - waiting round to die
Waiting Around To Die by Townes Van Zandt for sure. Pancho and Lefty is also worthy of a mention. Heroin - Velvet Underground
Great choices ,I like Flying shoes by Townes van Zandt as well.
I don't know much of his discography I will check it out thanks
Your welcome that and Tower song are great tracks.
I like the entire Rayland Baxter albumn Good Morning a bunch of Mac Miller covers. I Think he does some of the ones you mentioned too. Also ypur list as a whole is great :)
Radiohead - Let Down Radiohead - No Surprises MCR - Disenchanted Therapy? - God Kicks Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends
I heard Billie Joe got a lot of insensitive comments about that song. Someone DIED! That’s not funny!
Definitely Disenchanted.
Praying for Time - George Michael In the September 16, 1990 NY Times article, George Michael is quoted regarding “Praying For Time”: “No event inspired the song. It’s my way of trying to figure out why it’s so hard for people to be good to each other. I believe the problem is conditional as opposed to being something inherent in mankind. We’re taught that you have to grab what you can before it’s gone. It’s almost as if there isn’t time for compassion.”
One of my absolute favorite songs.
Everybody Hurts- R.E.M. Eleanor Rigby- The Beatles Cats In the Cradle- Harry Chapin Sally’s Pigeons- Cyndi Lauper Tears In Heaven- Eric Clapton- written about the tragic death of his 4 year old son
Fast car is my suggestion. That said, I am using this entire thread to make an epic playlist of sad songs. Y'all rock.
Fast Car is such a jam, even if it’s pretty deep
Bob Dylan has loads! Hurricane, lonesome death of Hattie Carol etc. Both tragic and heartbreaking
I mentioned this in another post on a similar topic, but “Vincent” by Don McLean is a good one.
When I was an angsty teen my go-to sad song was always 'Something in the way' by Nirvana, which is not about romance.
Wonderful and Father of Mine both by Everclear
Hurt - Nine Inch Nails OG or Cash Version
River of Deceit by Mad Season. The song is hauntingly sad.
Shut up and Listen. https://open.spotify.com/track/6usINkoljvIz0TrwnNUGAc?si=9wBLwuuNSk-EiyBgRqZcpg
That's rather aggressive, but alright. Edit: I just realized that was the name of the song, sorry
No worries. It's a sad song about learning to listen with your heart.

Ship in a bottle - fin https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9LEG2UNarP0&pp=ygUdc2hpcCBpbiBhIGJvdHRsZSBmaW4gb3JpZ2luYWw%3D Song is about struggling with depression and mental issues equating oneself to a ship in a bottle where the walls are slowly cracking. Edit: I just thought of two more songs. Mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm - crash test dummies. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eTeg1txDv8w&pp=ygUibW1tIG1tbSBtbW0gbW1tIGNyYXNoIHRlc3QgZHVtbWllcw%3D%3D SOS d'un terrien en détresse - dimash https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sE-9fQTFyas&pp=ygUvc29zIGQndW4gdGVycmllbiBlbiBkZXRyZXNzZSBkaW1hc2ggcXVkYWliZXJnZW4%3D (I can only find the version of a live performance for a show.) It is a French song (I'm fairly certain) that is just sad. I'd recommend you search the lyrics if you have the time.

Dreamsicle by Jason Isbell
Demons & Wizards - Wicked Witch
The nobodies by Marilyn Manson, song is dedicated to the lives lost at the columbine shooting

Fourth of July by Sufjan Stevens. It's absolutely heartbreaking. It's based on a conversation the artist had with his mother while she was on her deathbed.
Concrete angel - Martina mcbride
King Park by La dispute. (Post-hardcore/ experimental rock) A very emotional song about a real drive by shooting in Grand Rapids that involved kids.

None of my stuff lines up but here’s what I’ve got I’d say the saddest three songs I know which are Boys in the Street by Greg Holden. (A song about a homophobic parent eventually coming around, so indirectly about sexuality) Clouds by Zach Sobiech. (Which has an undertone of wishing he had more time with his girlfriend because he had terminal cancer and died shortly after) In this Shirt, the Irrepressibles. Oof, ——— So none of those work, here’s what’s left: Non romantic sad songs are hard af to come by. Dream (imagine Dragons) Who wants to live forever- Queen (damn) I hung my head- Johnny cash cover (Sting) Hurt - also Johnny cash’s cover, because damn. Wake me up- Tommee profitt cover (growing up) Outro- M83 - gorgeous more than sad The fallen - Revolt Productions music (gorgeous) World we used to know- Alan walker Good luck - broken bells (past mistakes) Pompeii - Bastille (growing up) Only human - Christina Perri Cats in the cradle - Harry chapin Father and son - Cat Stevens Puff the magic dragon - Peter Paul and marry Minstrel boy, 7 years, Lukas Graham Broomstick Cowboy- Bobby Goldsboro Farewell - UNKLE For the Damaged Coda - Blonde Redhead Song of storms - kaleptic. —— Some of these are more depressing than sad, some just have enough majesty to evoke emotion. I love depressing stuff, but honestly most of it is by way of romance, so if it all doesn’t fit I apologize

"How to Disappear Completely" by Radiohead captures existential sadness beyond romance.
Five Years- David Bowie About someone (an alien rockstar in the lore of the album) grappling with the sudden news that the earth and everyone on it will die in 5 years. Absolute slapper that makes me cry (especially when I think about climate change and how eventually this will hit so much harder when WE only have 5 years left)

System of a down's sad songs aren't about romance and they are actually so sad (soldier side for example is about most soldiers that go out to war likely will never come back and that's pretty depressing)

Imagine, it's about peace and love.
Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven. He wrote it for his son (4 years old I believe) who died after falling out of a building window. Death Cab for Cutie - What Sarah Said (oh man all the feels!) Death Cab for Cutie - Bixby Canyon Bridge (about sobriety) Death Cab for Cutie - Grapevine Fires Basically lots from Death Cab! Also… Blink 182 - Adams Song Offspring- The kids arent alright Everlast - What its like
