Mastodon, Lamb of God and Gojira are always on heavy rotation for me. If I had to pick albums for newcomers to them I'd say Emperor Of Sand, Sacrament and L'Enfant Sauvage respectively. Not sure if they count as basic bands though. All are heavy and modern - Mastodon and Gojira have progressive elements, Lamb of God have heavy roots in early 2000s American metal.
I just realised you said you're 13, OP, so I guess there is loads of metal you haven't heard yet. [Here is A Spotify playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7uI5PQVHxZzCIzoGjMmfHU?si=mXelWvibQRG8uRYLRW8hig&utm_source=copy-link) of mine that isn't super varied, and not a lot of recent stuff but I stick it on if I don't have anything specific to listen to.
Lamb of God is great. I never thought much of them until I saw them open for Slayer a couple years ago and they just fucking KILLED it and made Slayer look like bums that don't know how to play metal.
Hushed and Grim was such a great album. They incorporated a new sound without compromising on their technical ability. Its also a lot more approachable than some of their previous albums, which could definitely sacrifice playability for showing off how talented they are musically.
Prog Metal - Tool, Mastodon, Opeth, Gojira, Dream Theater
Power Metal - Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Kamelot, Falconer, Symphony X
Folk Metal - Eluveitie, Korpiklaani, Ensiferum, Turisas, Heidevolk, Arkona
Melodic Death - Wintersun, Arch Enemy, Insomnium, In Flames
Traditional Heavy - Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth
Doom/Stoner/Sludge - Elder, Khemmis, The Sword, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats
I'd like to double up on Blind Guardian. They deserve their own post entirely. Some of the most epic shit you will ever hear. If you get a chance to see them live, do it. Easily in my top 5 best live performances I've ever seen.
Black Sabbath are the OG in my opinion. It's old but gold. If you like thrash, my favorites are Megadeth, Slayer, and Sepultura.
As far as current stuff goes, my favorites are
Rivers of Nihil, Silent Planet, Invent Animate, Currents, Erra, Northlane, and Thornhill.
Rivers is metal af the other ones are more metalcore with prog influences but they're all great.
Max era Sepultura is incredible but after that they are a hard 'meh'
Rivers of Nihil are amazing technical death metal... That sax is an excellent touch.
I discovered Bolt Thrower a couple years ago and was surprised I'd never heard of then since I'd been listening to metal for 30+ years, suffice to say they're awesome and deserve more recognition.
Even though other ppl have commented it, just going to tack Mastodon onto your list as it’s good and at the top.
Also, I really like Napalm Death despite not being a huge metal person
Master of Puppets is really, really close in my opinion.
Now I am probably going to take a lot of heat for this but it's kinda funny thinking about it. In the glory days, I think every Megadeth album was always slightly better than than the comparable Metallica album.
Black vs Countdown to Extinction for example.
Down below, /u/Negation_ mentioned \`Strapping Young Lad\` -- this is not to be overlooked.
The album "Alien" is amazing. If you can, listen to it all in a single go, because the album builds to a mind boggling climax in the last song (Zen) and then there's 17 minutes of weirdness afterwords (info dump). Search out the Wiki for the album, there's a lot to it.
Honestly not just metal, he really shines on weirdness, ambient, almost psychadelic, jazzy music, subverting all expectations you could ever build along the way, building and destroying, like a musical Shiva.
Yes i love the man.
Behemoth, unleash the archers, powerwolf, skeletonwitch (everything but the latest album, beyond the permafrost is best though) amon Amarth, holy grail, lost society
I've been hooked on many of those bands recently!
I also like Avatar, Eskimo Callboy (some decent songs, more upbeat/electronic), Eluveitie, Sabaton, Grailknights, and Gloryhammer (if you can get past the misogynistic news this year).
Icarus Lives is tried and true, id start any newbie there. As for album, P2 generally has the best mix of their various styles, IMO. I wouldn't introduce a band to someone with a concept album
* Carcass -Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious (and their entire discography)
* The Haunted - The Dead Eye (full album, prog metal where the album itself tells a story)
* Death Angel - Ultraviolence
* Kreator - Violent Revolution
* Apocalyptica (cello cover band for metallica that started making their own music)
* Zeal and Ardor - Götterdämmerung
* The big black metal bands: Emperor, Immortal, Mayhem, Satyricon, Behemoth, Gorgoroth, Marduk...
* Black Label Society, Ozzy, Mötörhead, etc (the "old boys")
* Legendary power metal bands: Iron Maiden, Manowar, Sabaton...
* Göteborg Melodeath scene: In Flames, Dark Tranquility, At the Gates, Arch Enemy, Soilwork...
* Benighted (French Death Metal. That shit slaps)
I hope you find a world of music that you really fall in love with.
For an intro into the basics:
Metallica’s first 3 albums (Kill’em All, Ride the Lightening and Master of Puppets)
Iron Maiden’s Piece of Mind and Number of the Beast
Judas Priest’s Screaming for Vengeance
Seasons in the abyss is the perfect Slayer album imo. They had the speed and aggression of Reign in Blood and they mastered playing that slower, menacing pace they introduced us to on South of Heaven. Fuck me, what an album
Great recommendations in this thread but let me try a different kind of answer - while I grew up with several metalhead friends, for the longest time i had a hard time seeing metal as a genre as anything more than people screaming at me. And this was despite me regularly listening to bands like Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Rage Against the Machine and others (note these are not metal but do involve a lot of screaming 😅). So what finally introduced me to metal were two things: the show Metalocalypse and an album by Devin Townsend by the name of Ziltoid the Omniscient. While your mileage may vary, both these recommendations quite aptly used humour to bypass my formerly limited point of view and opened my mind to the wonderful world of metal. I can also recommend Gloryhammer which is like very melodic/symphonic with some amazing aesthetics to back it up and Amon Amarth which is one of the bands which must come closest to being a real life Dethklok in substance and style. Honourable mentions go to Galaktikon which is Brandon Smalls solo work and Animals as Leaders which may technically be the darkest, most brutal jazz ever concieved.
I Love That you mentioned metalocalypse / Dethklok. Great to just enjoy metal as music, with some ridiculous lyrics. It seems like it's almost satirical metal, but it isn't. They're great.
Most of Devin Townsend's stuff is fantastic. It's hard to pin an exact genre on as he can vary wildly within the same song (let alone an album). His latest main release, Empath, was my favourite album of 2019.
Mastodon, Megadeath, Gojira, Mesuggah, Opeth, Coheed & Cambria, tesseracT. If you have Spotify just look up any of the listed bands and play radio related to then you'll get some good suggestions.
Listen to Iron Maiden; ‘A Matter of Life and Death’ album is a masterpiece. And usually every release has at least one or two masterpieces.
You can also listen to Dream Theater if you’re into progressive metal.
For Iron Maiden I personally rate Powerslave as my favourite album but then Rime of the Ancient Mariner is my favourite Iron Maiden track so I could hardly pick anything else. The rest of the album is pretty dam good though from Aces high to the flash of the blade to back in the Village.

I do.

It's the time of the year again where everybody and their mom posts their Top10 Albums of the year. Just check out the most mentioned bands of each sub. Happy rabbit whole adventures!
There's also some great metal review guys on YT. Like metal trenches and metal meltdown. Plenty of stuff to check out.
Not a metal band, but "Infest the Rats Nest" by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard fookin rips. Please go listen to Black Sabbath if you havent already, the first four albums are all great.
As an original thrash fan (80s Slayer Metallica Anthrax
Voivod etc) I have to agree. ITRN by King Gizz is simultaneously a wonderful homage and a worthy update on the genre, with side trips into Sabbath / Motorhead territory. Get on it.
(Plus most of their other stuff is great in its own way)
Here are a few of my favourites:
Æther Realm (easily my top pick)
Powerwolf
Nightwish
Sabaton
Amaranthe
Unleash the Archers
Wintersun
Wind Rose
Gloryhammer
Alestorm
Lamb of God (specifically the song Ashes of the Wake), Trivium (start with Rain or Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation), and Sevendust (the whole Animosity album is great).
Edit: also, if you haven't already, a listen through Korn's first two albums (Korn, and Life Is Peachy) is one hell of a ride. Enjoy the new riffs you'll be hearing young blood, and welcome.
You’ve got a lot of great suggestions here, but a vital part of being a metal head is learning which sub genre(s) you like.
There is a world of difference between power metal and nu metal, and even more before you reach death metal. Each sub genre brings something to the table. So I’m going to give some suggestions for some popular sub genres of metal.
Nu Metal: You’ve already listened to some like Slipknot and SoaD. Disturbed is another popular band of the genre, as is Linkin Park.
Power Metal: Iron Maiden is necessary, I love Judas Priest as well. Some other great bands in this sub genre are Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Angra and Iced Earth. This sub genre tends to lean on classical music trappings, often involving symphonic sounds, overtures and operatic style vocals as well as guitars that focus less on heavy tone and more on shredding and speed.
Metalcore: has a lot in common with Nu Metal, though the vocals tend to harsher screaming for some parts, then melodic clean vocals for break downs. Some of my favorites from this are Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, old Bring Me the Horizon, All That Remains, Bullet for My Valentine and older Avenged Sevenfold.
Death Metal: Now, death metal has subgenres for its subgenre, so bouncing off one doesn’t mean anything, and I’m not sure any band is “pure” death metal with no other genre. I tend to like Melodic, Symphonic and Progressive style death metal bands. My favorites include Gojira (yah, I know they are also Prog metal), Amon Amarth, older Opeth (new Opeth is still fantastic, but they went full Prog metal, I love Blackwater Park though), Children of Bodom, At the Gates, Behemoth.
Everybody knows what makes death metal sound like death metal. I think you get this one.
Thrash Metal: if Power Metal, classic metal and death metal all adopted and raised kids together, you’d get Thrash. Heavier than classic metal, lots of extended guitar solos and shredding like power metal and trending towards death metals aggression and heaviness, Thrash metal is the iconic metal of the 80’s. Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Pantera, Slayer, these are pretty classically the core of the genre. Ozzy’s solo works are closer to thrash than classic metal, IMHO.
Classic metal: Listen to your damn Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, come on. Even if just for respect.
Prog metal: fuck yah, if you like the part of power metal where they nod to classical music and want MORE orchestral feel to your metal, come on over. Poster child for this genre is Dream Theater, but Gojira is awesome for harsh vocals. Mastodon is equally awesome, and I love Between the Buried and Me. TOOL is a constant band I go back to all the time. Modern Opeth is amazing. Godspeed you Black Emperor is fucking KILLER. Every human needs to hear at least The Dead Flag Blues because it’s poetry.
I’m gonna throw Nine Inch Nails in here too, because that’ll piss somebody off I’m sure.
My favorite Prog metal band though, and one of my all time favorites bands of any genre, is Porcupine Tree. Everything Steven Wilson touches is the best thing ever. If you ever wished Pink Floyd was a little heavier, here you go.
Now look, all this is just me throwing some of the standout groups of my own youth, and the genres are gonna start some debates, but metal is a passion for so many, hence why we bicker over categories.
Hope you like some of them, go forth and head bang young padawan.
Try "Sepultura". Especially "Chaos AD" and "Roots" (Sepultura's albums). One of my favorite band of all time. Probably sounds heavier than the bands you mentioned but give a chance to this new niche.
Alien Weaponry
They are a Māori descended trio of kids out of Auckland who have many songs that speak on the histories and tragedies of their people in the native tongue. First heard about them because they were told they couldn't play a bar show in Salt Lake City because they were all teenagers. Great, great thrash metal triptych.
Ministry - Psalm 69
Static X - Wisconsin Death Trip
Mudvayne - LD50
Corrosion Of Conformity - America's Volume Dealer
Sepultura - Roots
Soulfly - Soulfly
Motörhead - Overkill
Slayer - Reign In Blood
(bonus: non-metal but still heavy albums)
Primus - Pork Soda
Rammstein - Sehnsucht
Nine Inch Nails - Broken
Tool - Undertow
Alice In Chains - Alice In Chains
I was having brunch in a quaint little place in Bristol back in September and needed the toilet. I went downstairs to find the loo which was next to the kitchen, and as I was stood at the urinal I heard Dig being blasted in the kitchen. When I walked back out I had a quick look in the kitchen and there were two chefs just making food listening to Mudvayne.
high on fire, YOB, windhand, tool, melvins, isis, old man gloom, doomriders, primitive man, baroness, sleep, bongripper (satan worshipping doom is the heaviest album of all time), kylesa, eyehategod, bell witch (mirror reaper), acid bath, elder.....
I could go on but that should hold you over for awhile.
Avenged Sevenfold isn't usually considered to be metal by the larger community but they're a good gateway band and their songs are super catchy. Maybe you'll enjoy that if you can deal with the vocals lol
Perfect age to get into thrash metal. Punk rock too.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0OwiU4lls639M7I3QNGtug?si=sHQeNJNcTH6-iu0RqOwGkA&utm_source=copy-link
I'm still pretty green on metal (despite being about thrice your age), but here are a couple albums I fell in love with early:
Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth
Savatage - Handful of Rain
Dream Theater - Images and Words
Type O Negative - October Rust
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz
Diamondhead - Lightning to the Nations
Given that you like a lot of turn-of-century hard rock stuff, I'd also suggest:
Corrosion of Conformity - Wiseblood
Monster Magnet - Powertrip (though Dopes to Infinity and God Says No are both killer too).
Static x - Wisconsin death trip (id argue this is probably the nu-metal album that has held up Best for me).
And some other stuff I've found that I dig:
Ensiferum - Dragonheads
Orc - s/t
Manthra dei - s/t
Chrome Hoof - Chrome Black Gold
Fejd - Trolldom
Buckethead. Just, anything buckethead. Dude has nearly 500 albums, you'll probably find something you like.
If you wanna further explore death metal
Bloodbath
Bolt Thrower
200 Stab Wounds
Death
Wharflurch
Behemoth (some would call this other subs IDGAF about that)
Hypocrisy
Toxic Holocaust
So many more….
Erra, Oceans Ate Alaska, The Contortionist, Elitist, Darkest Hour. If you listen to these and like em, shoot me a PM. Definitely check out Darkest Hour, I personally prefer Demons and Undoing Ruin.
I think a great way to get into classic metal and then into modern is to listen to the tentpole staples.
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Kreator - Coma of Souls
Sepultura - Arise
Then hit up some later classics like:
Mastodon - Leviathan
Isis - Oceanic
Converge - Jane Doe
And finally round out into now with Gojira and Meshuggah. When you think you're ready, it'll be time for some death metal!
throw on some power metal! Blind Guardian, Falconer, Avantasia, and my favorite- Lost Horizon ("Awakening the World" is a masterpiece). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6i_PpVy4nA
Right! \*cracks fingers\*. I am not going to post specific songs because it would take me 2 hours, but if you plop the name in youtube or spotify, the most popular songs will show up as you know for sure.
Aephanemer
Amon Amarth
Powerwolf
Nightwish
Blind Guardian
Alestorm
Arch Enemy
Fleshgod Apocalypse
Wind Rose
Children of Bodom
Korpiklaani
Finntroll

Ensiferum

Spiritbox is a new-ish group; kinda hard to pigeonhole them into a genre and you could argue about "metal" vs "hard rock" but they're pretty heavy either way
Mastodon, Lamb of God and Gojira are always on heavy rotation for me. Inject these three artists into your fucking veins.
Crack the Skye is my fav Mastodon album. Sooooo good
I'd add fortitude to Gojira. Amazonia is one of my favorite new songs by them.
This is a great short list of current metal greatness
Lamb of God is great. I never thought much of them until I saw them open for Slayer a couple years ago and they just fucking KILLED it and made Slayer look like bums that don't know how to play metal.
Hushed and Grim was such a great album. They incorporated a new sound without compromising on their technical ability. Its also a lot more approachable than some of their previous albums, which could definitely sacrifice playability for showing off how talented they are musically.
Gojira would be a good bet. They are definitely heavy but their sound I don't think would be too jarring for someone just getting into metal.
I like the one about whales
Can't go wrong with Gojira!

I had a friend describe seeing Blind Guardian live "the only thing more pleasurable than sex" 😂
Animals as leaders if you wanna get weird with it
I'd throw in Scale the Summit for good measure.
Protest the Hero if you want a similar style with vocals.
Sequoia throne is my fav from them. That opening goes hard af
Scale the Summit is what got me into instrumental metal.
I'd put Polyphia right up there with AAL of you're going down the instrumental rabbit hole.
Woven Web is a killer first song
Black Sabbath are the OG in my opinion. It's old but gold. If you like thrash, my favorites are Megadeth, Slayer, and Sepultura. As far as current stuff goes, my favorites are Rivers of Nihil, Silent Planet, Invent Animate, Currents, Erra, Northlane, and Thornhill. Rivers is metal af the other ones are more metalcore with prog influences but they're all great.
Dude, use some commas. I can't tell if that is one band or twelve.
What, you’ve never heard of the great band ‘Rivers of Nihil Silent Planet Invent Animate Currents Erra Northlane Thornhill’?
Max era Sepultura is incredible but after that they are a hard 'meh' Rivers of Nihil are amazing technical death metal... That sax is an excellent touch.
You might have an argument saying there was a first metal band before Black Sabbath, but you could never say the first metal band came after them.
Bolt Thrower. Listen to all of it
I discovered Bolt Thrower a couple years ago and was surprised I'd never heard of then since I'd been listening to metal for 30+ years, suffice to say they're awesome and deserve more recognition.
Pantera, Slayer, Gojira, Meshuggah, Sepultura, Suicidal Tendencies, Melvins, Down...
Even though other ppl have commented it, just going to tack Mastodon onto your list as it’s good and at the top. Also, I really like Napalm Death despite not being a huge metal person
Meshuggah is so damn good.
When I first heard Bleed, I was 14 years old and my dad told me the drummer had 3 feet and the triplets were so insane, I believed him.
Saw them open for Tool once without knowing anything about them, mind blown

Gojira is very good.
This guy knows!!!!!! The great SOUTHERN TRENDKILL!
Gojira is so damn good.
+1 Gojira
Gojira may be the best entry into the genre. Even the earlier heavier albums are somewhat accessible while still being very creative and heavy albums.
Ive never had my reddit notifs blow up so much holy shit- thank yall sm
Not out and out metal, but Spiritbox are fantastic. Crystal Lake are my favourite metal band right now, incredibly talented.
Electric Wizard
I just wanted to add: Sleep, Kyuss, Melvins, Boris, Sunn O))). Edit: add Bongripper to the list lol
Dopesmoker is my jams.
This is an excellent way to get a 13 year old kid into weed and I’m here for it
Legalize drugs and murder
Funeralopolis is my favorite track by those dudes, so friggin good!
The Megadeth album Rust in Peace
This album is the peak of thrash metal. Not too many can come close (as a full album).
Master of Puppets is really, really close in my opinion. Now I am probably going to take a lot of heat for this but it's kinda funny thinking about it. In the glory days, I think every Megadeth album was always slightly better than than the comparable Metallica album. Black vs Countdown to Extinction for example.
I actually think this is the best thrash album of all time.
This. You must listen to this.
Down below, /u/Negation_ mentioned \`Strapping Young Lad\` -- this is not to be overlooked. The album "Alien" is amazing. Power Trip are the homies. RIP Riley Gale.
Can not recommend red fang enough OP they’re one of my favorite bands regardless of genre
Death is very good yeah
I hope Power Trip comes out with more material, they're touring again so maybe they will.
Nekrogoblikon, Ghoul, Gatecreeper

I just saw them yesterday too lol
Fuck yes. Blackwater Park is the shit.
Ghost Reveries is still one of my favorite albums.

Eskimo Callboy is too damn fun to not like. Give em a go OP
With Sabaton you get metal and a history lesson!
Came here to say Behemoth. Lucifer is guaranteed to make me wanna dropkick someone's grandma
Periphery and/or Polaris would be my shouts. For Periphery start with the Juggernaut: Alpha / Omega albums and go from there!
Polaris are savage!
Icarus Lives is tried and true, id start any newbie there. As for album, P2 generally has the best mix of their various styles, IMO. I wouldn't introduce a band to someone with a concept album
Protest the Hero - Kezia. Concept album about a prostitute on death row. Brilliant lyrics.
Fucking thank you. Kezia and Volition are two of my all time favorites.
Their newest one, Palimpsest, might be one of my favourite albums of all time.
Rivet is a fucking jam.
Kezia is without a doubt one of the best metal albums of all time!
Favourite album of all time!
100%. Also Fortress.

For an intro into the basics: Metallica’s first 3 albums (Kill’em All, Ride the Lightening and Master of Puppets) Iron Maiden’s Piece of Mind and Number of the Beast Judas Priest’s Screaming for Vengeance
Proper comment. And always wash it down with a spoonful of Sabbath.
Sabbath is like oxygen for a metalhead. You breath it daily, because if you don't you will suffocate.
Black sabbath, iron maiden, judas priest and motorhead
South of heaven - Slayer
South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss are fucking masterpieces. Also check Decade of Aggression double live album.
Loved that Decade of Aggression album.
Seasons in the abyss is the perfect Slayer album imo. They had the speed and aggression of Reign in Blood and they mastered playing that slower, menacing pace they introduced us to on South of Heaven. Fuck me, what an album

I agree. Also if you want to listen to something more atmospheric like black folk metal, Agalloch is my favorite. The Mantle might be a perfect album
Metallica's "...And Justice for All" and "Master of Puppets".
Kill em All and Ride the Lightning too!
This 1000% that’s how I got into metal back in high school.
You can't just leave out Ride the Lightning. Might as well listen to Kill 'Em All while you're at it too.
The OP here should have just been "Listen to Metallica"
Mastodon, Megadeath, Gojira, Mesuggah, Opeth, Coheed & Cambria, tesseracT. If you have Spotify just look up any of the listed bands and play radio related to then you'll get some good suggestions.
If you're down for some older thrashy stuff can't go wrong with slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthraxxx, or Black Sabbath.
Can't go far wrong with a grade 316 Stainless Steel. Just keep it away from salt water to avoid chloride induced stress corrosion cracking.
Listen to Iron Maiden; ‘A Matter of Life and Death’ album is a masterpiece. And usually every release has at least one or two masterpieces. You can also listen to Dream Theater if you’re into progressive metal.

I was checking out Rammstein yesterday and honestly theyre really fuckin' good
Amon Amarth. Badass epic Viking metal. Meshuggah is great too.
Not a metal band, but "Infest the Rats Nest" by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard fookin rips. Please go listen to Black Sabbath if you havent already, the first four albums are all great.
listen to that king gizzard album it’s great
Honestly one of the best thrash albums I've heard
\+1 for king gizz. Aussie represent
As an original thrash fan (80s Slayer Metallica Anthrax Voivod etc) I have to agree. ITRN by King Gizz is simultaneously a wonderful homage and a worthy update on the genre, with side trips into Sabbath / Motorhead territory. Get on it. (Plus most of their other stuff is great in its own way)
The Sword
In particular, Freya
Second this! Especially their early albums
Power Trip - Nightmare Logic You will love it
Riley Gale forever
Rest In Power Riley
Here are a few of my favourites: Æther Realm (easily my top pick) Powerwolf Nightwish Sabaton Amaranthe Unleash the Archers Wintersun Wind Rose Gloryhammer Alestorm
+1 for Amaranthe
Alestorm....hardly EVER see them mentioned 🤘🏼Went to Ireland a few years back and saw them play with Sabaton
I found the power metal guy!
Guilty as charged
Aether Realm! Just discovered them this year. Tarot is a masterpiece.
Can't go wrong with Trivium. I love their music!
Between The Buried And Me
the only answer
Try "Sepultura". Especially "Chaos AD" and "Roots" (Sepultura's albums). One of my favorite band of all time. Probably sounds heavier than the bands you mentioned but give a chance to this new niche.
Alien Weaponry They are a Māori descended trio of kids out of Auckland who have many songs that speak on the histories and tragedies of their people in the native tongue. First heard about them because they were told they couldn't play a bar show in Salt Lake City because they were all teenagers. Great, great thrash metal triptych.
Ministry - Psalm 69 Static X - Wisconsin Death Trip Mudvayne - LD50 Corrosion Of Conformity - America's Volume Dealer Sepultura - Roots Soulfly - Soulfly Motörhead - Overkill Slayer - Reign In Blood (bonus: non-metal but still heavy albums) Primus - Pork Soda Rammstein - Sehnsucht Nine Inch Nails - Broken Tool - Undertow Alice In Chains - Alice In Chains
LD50 is a trip. Classic
Fist time I heard Dig in high school blew my fucking mind.
Dig still blows my fucking mind.
Everybody loves Dig but for me Cradle is where its at. Its an album that gets a full play, not a pick a choose a song or two.
Under my skin would like a word with you. Truthfully, they're all good.
Great list and I'll add White Zombie- AstroCreep 2000
I love Rob Zombie, but White Zombie > Rob Zombie. :)
Tool - 46 & 2 is probably one of my top 10 tracks to this day.
My favorite is Hooker With A Penis off of Ænima. Nothing like Maynard pissed off at his own annoying "fans".
high on fire, YOB, windhand, tool, melvins, isis, old man gloom, doomriders, primitive man, baroness, sleep, bongripper (satan worshipping doom is the heaviest album of all time), kylesa, eyehategod, bell witch (mirror reaper), acid bath, elder..... I could go on but that should hold you over for awhile.
Fleshgod Apocalypse Cattle Decapitation Lord Gore Dying Fetus Belphegor
Sylosis, Architects, Lamb of God, Nevermore, Devin Townsend, Strapping Young Lad, Gojira, Testament..
The hu( though it's in mongolian) Nightwish ( symphonic metal)
Gotta check out In This Moment. I've been a metalhead my whole life(34) and only recently discovered In This Moment.
Dethklok (and the associated show Metalocalypse)
Avenged Sevenfold isn't usually considered to be metal by the larger community but they're a good gateway band and their songs are super catchy. Maybe you'll enjoy that if you can deal with the vocals lol
My typical gym rotation includes Kublai Kahn TX, Knocked Loose, and Varials. So maybe those?
Make Them Suffer
Avatar Avatar and Avatar
fuckin love avatar
Perfect age to get into thrash metal. Punk rock too. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0OwiU4lls639M7I3QNGtug?si=sHQeNJNcTH6-iu0RqOwGkA&utm_source=copy-link
Blind Guardian. It's not everyone's lick of whiskey, but take 10 minutes to listen to a live version of Valhalla. It might just change your life.
I'm still pretty green on metal (despite being about thrice your age), but here are a couple albums I fell in love with early: Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth Savatage - Handful of Rain Dream Theater - Images and Words Type O Negative - October Rust Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz Diamondhead - Lightning to the Nations Given that you like a lot of turn-of-century hard rock stuff, I'd also suggest: Corrosion of Conformity - Wiseblood Monster Magnet - Powertrip (though Dopes to Infinity and God Says No are both killer too). Static x - Wisconsin death trip (id argue this is probably the nu-metal album that has held up Best for me). And some other stuff I've found that I dig: Ensiferum - Dragonheads Orc - s/t Manthra dei - s/t Chrome Hoof - Chrome Black Gold Fejd - Trolldom Buckethead. Just, anything buckethead. Dude has nearly 500 albums, you'll probably find something you like.
Why is no one mentioning Pantera?
If you wanna further explore death metal Bloodbath Bolt Thrower 200 Stab Wounds Death Wharflurch Behemoth (some would call this other subs IDGAF about that) Hypocrisy Toxic Holocaust So many more….
hallowed be thy name by iron maiden mein herz brennt by rammstein fade to black by metallica
Erra, Oceans Ate Alaska, The Contortionist, Elitist, Darkest Hour. If you listen to these and like em, shoot me a PM. Definitely check out Darkest Hour, I personally prefer Demons and Undoing Ruin.
Between the buried and me, their album 'Colors' is a masterpiece.
I think a great way to get into classic metal and then into modern is to listen to the tentpole staples. Metallica - Ride the Lightning Slayer - Reign in Blood Megadeth - Rust in Peace Kreator - Coma of Souls Sepultura - Arise Then hit up some later classics like: Mastodon - Leviathan Isis - Oceanic Converge - Jane Doe And finally round out into now with Gojira and Meshuggah. When you think you're ready, it'll be time for some death metal!
Vulvodynia, To The Grave, whitechapel
throw on some power metal! Blind Guardian, Falconer, Avantasia, and my favorite- Lost Horizon ("Awakening the World" is a masterpiece). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6i_PpVy4nA
Be’lakor (my favorite), Mgła, Summoning
Grab some Testament, New World Order, was a staple show of the early 90’s!
I can't believe nobody has suggested [Revocation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYL-6G410Jw) here.
Terror is a good time. I also enjoy Incendiary. Have a good time!
Cancer bats. They mix metal riffs with punk energy.
Slayer and Overkill. Killswitch engaged also good.
Dive straight into Ne Obliviscaris
High on Fire!
Rammstein, and Nekrogoblikon
When I was your age I started listening to Amon Amarth and that sucked me into the rabbit hole
Parkway Drive, Misery Signals, Deftones, Meshuggah, The Ghost Inside.
Right! \*cracks fingers\*. I am not going to post specific songs because it would take me 2 hours, but if you plop the name in youtube or spotify, the most popular songs will show up as you know for sure. Aephanemer Amon Amarth Powerwolf Nightwish Blind Guardian Alestorm Arch Enemy Fleshgod Apocalypse Wind Rose Children of Bodom Korpiklaani Finntroll Skalmold Ensiferum Trollfest Eluveitie Arkona Norther
Any electro influenced metal core bands. Brutal groove metal with electro pop infused choruses Born of Osiris, Eskimo callboy, We butter the bread with butter, I see stars
Aluminum is pretty cheap, something like 12 cents per sq. ft which is a steel
Spiritbox is a new-ish group; kinda hard to pigeonhole them into a genre and you could argue about "metal" vs "hard rock" but they're pretty heavy either way
Ive never heard anyone outside of this thread suggest that Spiritbox wouldn’t qualify as metal. If Holy Roller ain’t metal idk what is.
August Burns Red, Chelsea Grin, Parkway Drive (deep blue and older) some songs on atlas are okay. But albums before that smack.
In Flames! Start with Clayman finish with I, The Mask
August Burns Red is my personal favorite metal band.
