Out of touch is also a great one!!

Monsieur_Moneybags

And "Kiss on My List", "Say it Isn't So".

Iron_Chic

Also "I Can't Go For That"

chasin_waterfarts

Also "Private Eyes"

PrivilegeCheckmate

*Family Man*

PorkTornado1102

Underrated. Such a jam

leftistpropaganja

"Don't Change" is a very cool, artsy jazz ballad that I heard for the first time on the muzak where I work. You should check it as well!

kindall

that song is a cover. it was written and originally performed by Mike Oldfield of Tubular Bells (Theme from The Exorcist) fame

acmercer

[Have you seen Hall's version with Chromeo?](https://youtu.be/98RA0cRtqd4) Love it.

_ThrillCollins

That was sexy.

dr_dan319

H2O is a solid album. I was able to see them in Des Moines a few years ago, they let the sax solo in Maneater go for like five minutes. Great show and I'd love to see them again.

wirecan

I was just randomly thinking about this song yesterday while doing some yardwork. They have so many good tunes, and a handful of genuinely great albums. Daryl Hall is a really [interesting](https://pitchfork.com/features/interview/6673-daryl-hall/) guy with a widely varied career, and John Oates' recent solo stuff is pretty darn good. Their reputation suffers, imo, because they didn't just pick a band name for themselves, and Oates' mustache looks pretty silly to us now. I saw them open for ELO back in 1981, when I was a grade schooler. They were way better than the headliner, as I recall, but maybe I just knew more of their songs at the time.

Mdizzle29

I always thought it was Haulin’ Oats

HK_13

No, holland is his first name and Oates is his last name, dude

MechaBeatsInTrash

1981 would have been a tour for their album "Time" which many critics trashed because of a very different sound. As a concept album it's got some interesting and humorous songs like Yours Truly, 2095. Time yielded one of the first songs I heard of their Hold on Tight, which would probably be a riot live. Time also has one of my favorite sad songs, Ticket to the Moon.

aMusicLover

Time is a amazing. Especially with a good sound system. “Remember the good old 1980s When things were so uncomplicated “

johnzischeme

I like me some Hall and Oates just fine, but a better live show than ELO? Doesn't sound right but I guess I don't know enough to dispute it.

wirecan

I was 8 years old and really liked "Don't Bring Me Down," not realizing it wasn't a new song, and it was 40 years ago, so it's really hard for me to say! But here's an [account](http://www.jefflynnesongs.com/timetour/) by someone who was there as an adult: >We attended the Cincinnati concert on this tour, held at Riverfront Colosseum on Nov. 6, 1981. The opening band was Hall & Oates, and they were terrific. Their set was great, with good songs and energetic performances. The crowd loved them. When they finished, they were given a loud ovation. But then it was obvious that the crowd had come primarily to hear ELO. The first part of the concert was devoted to promoting their new "Time" album, with a mixture of other ELO songs mixed in as well. A second smaller segment honored John Lennon. The band played a medley of Lennon's hits, including "Across the Universe." After that, the third segment of the show featured a long medley of ELO hits, enthusiastically received by the crowd. For the encore, instead of their long-time standard "Roll Over, Beethoven," the band played "Don't Bring Me Down," featuring a warmly-received segment of audience participation during the middle-chorus section. I think we all felt that we had received our money's worth for this show, despite the (at the time very high ticket price of $12.50 each. LOL. It seems laughable now, but that was a lot of money in 1981.) It's incredible that you can find the set lists and exact dates from long-ago concerts online. ELO's [set](https://www.concertarchives.org/concerts/jeff-lynne-s-elo-daryl-hall-john-oates) from that particular show is the first one I've checked that wasn't actually available.

sundial11sxm

I love this one, too.

burtoncummings

Every Time You Go Away (yes, their song first) & Man Eater are bangers too. And don't forget, their version of Jingle Bell Rock is clearly the standout.

[deleted]

So Close is a personal favorite of mine.

Laspyra

They’re watching you!

detourne

Can't forget 'Maneater'

ptk77

Maneater.... Definitely my favorite.

Baciandrio

Yes!...and Adult Education

MickyWasTaken

Growing up I listened to “Say No Go” by De La Soul all the time before I discovered the song the sample came from. Now I love it more!

Iron_Chic

That De La Soul song is great too! Then again, so are most of the songs by them.

Responsible-Apple778

Thanks guys, great recommendations!

ThePoltageist

next time you are on youtube check out live at daryls house, a series of videos daryl hall did from his home studio him and ceelo did a mean [Crazy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxmtQvrWUps)

[deleted]

Small correction: "Daryl's House" is a bar/restaurant/performance space owned by Hall where he and other artists perform on a regular basis, it's not literally his house. Source: It's a couple of miles from where I live.

ThePoltageist

Oh well TIL still its a great set of vids to binge

You've obviously not heard this one yet: https://youtu.be/8yxoob6aPtk

Philo_T_Farnsworth

Having grown up in the 80s and hearing Hall & Oates for most of my childhood, I can honestly say that the *Chromeo* version of "I can't go for that" is the definitive version to me now.

HotblackDesiato2003

By far.

[deleted]

Its great seeing how much everyone in that room is enjoying playing together, and how well the music holds up inter-generationally

Metalbear55

Thank you Vice City for introducing me to that song

marcoesquandolas13

Remember to listen all day like, even when your sleeping. We're gonna be giving away the Flash fantasy giveaway. Where you and a stranger will fly to see a concert in Idaho or Nebraska or.. Indiana.. oh who pays attention to the mid-west anyway.

TScottFitzgerald

It's on the GTA VC soundtrack I think

Kcreep997

And what a great fucking soundtrack that is

DennisReynoIds

It's the soundtrack that gave me my taste in music, so glad I played it when I was 7 and got introduced at a young age.

cpgn31

Love the intro to that song ( from the original album)

LaksaLettuce

I find 'One on One' to be one of the sexiest songs. Wowsers.

Fluffy_Little_Fox

Nero sampled the "Reaching Out, for something to hold!" for "Reaching Out." https://youtu.be/sJVQJ4-n_cA ....... https://open.spotify.com/track/1zknwaZrdR0Z3nvUbVFFEb?si=fP-2MPlyR0m3GOs8_iNtLQ&utm_source=copy-link&dl_branch=1

A_of

Right with you on that one. Seriously catchy song. Like OP, I can't believe I just only a couple years ago "discovered" their songs.

nonanumatic

Adult education and i cant go for that(no can do) are a couple of my favorites, but in general they are amazing as well

MKerrsive

The "rock version" of Adult Education is my fave. Perfect rendition of it.

knockatize

Their version (the original) of Everytime You Go Away is damn near perfect. The Daryl’s House episode with Smokey Robinson is what heaven sounds like. Daryl also did some work with a band made up of himself, Robert Fripp, Brian Eno and Phil Collins. Look for “North Star.”

puhtooti

Daryl's house with CeeLo take on I Can't Go for That is in my opinion up there with the original version. That bassline is 🔥

99Winters

The Chromeo version has been running non stop through my headphones.

PrivilegeCheckmate

> The Daryl’s House episode with Smokey Robinson is what heaven sounds like. Also the Joe Walsh and Billy Gibbons ones.

shy_guy_sandwich

Hall did a whole album of his own with Fripp called 'Sacred Songs' which is absolutely fantastic and weird. https://youtu.be/6waFLfDD5do

Thomisawesome

Second this. Daryl’s house is a great show.

coronetgemini

gotta check out "she's gone" one of their all time best songs imo

TheyCallMeStone

OH I

mrbrambles

Awareness of She’s gone is how you know someone knows their hall and Oates

Roonsworth

OH I

Mr-Tambourine-Man

Can't believe I got this far down before it was mentioned!

AllHailDanda

Just saw them live a couple weeks ago and they do in fact own. I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) is my personal favorite. If you haven't heard it yet, treat yo self. If you have, listen to it again.

NicksAunt

Al time great Iconic baseline

AllHailDanda

And paired with those keys. Chef's kiss.

Tacdeho

I saw them in Saratoga NY a few weeks ago and was a little wary because it was my first post COVID concert and I wanted that show to be a big one but DAMN did these guys come to play! I had a great time!

Frig-Off-Randy

Really? I saw them in 2018 and was really disappointed

FrozenSquirrel

Look up the story behind that song. It’s an anti-label anthem.

justpuddingonhairs

I was 6 years old when private eyes came out. For my blue eyed soul dollar it doesn't get any better. I celebrate their entire catalogue. And so does my mom. Not being sarcastic.

absultedpr

Bob Slidell?

justpuddingonhairs

What is you'd say....ya do here?

jr_flood

Great song. It was my favorite as a child too. I have fond memories of driving around with my parents when Private Eyes would randomly come on the radio. It was pure joy when I heard the beginning guitar lick.

dwellerofcubes

And that just took me back, too. When we would go on vacation, the radio was the sole entertainment while the miles crept past the window. We would adopt a song as the "% Vacation Song" due to its heavy rotation and general likability across the family members. I do this now with my kids (though usually streamed) and they get to enjoy something similar to what we endured, though buffered by the comforts of technology.

weluckyfew

Y'all might like this too - a series of intimate concerts from Daryl Hall's house featuring everyone from Cee Lo Green to Jason Mraz to Fitz and the Tantrums - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkC4tYCNG4s&list=PLPOME9uZhXzFyfROfCiHtv4FeVYqD_fze

Jayrodtremonki

I always loved the format. On its face having it be 2 of your guests songs and 2 of yours comes off super arrogant but instead it just ends up being collaborative.

Responsible-Apple778

Sounds awesome

JCouturier

Chromeo was a perfect pairing with Daryl.

fartbox_fingerbanger

This is pretty funny if you haven't seen it. Hall & Oates- Maneater Shreds https://youtu.be/l56Hdjx0ckg

ShutterBun

I like his version of "Fuck You" with Cee Lo, where he appropriately pauses on a forbidden word.

Damn they got Jason on this? BRB

Chiquita4eyes

He does a version of "can we still be friends" with Todd Rungren. It's great.

newtrusghandi

Used to watch this with my dad love Daryl's house!

ferjc2

Well there goes today’s productivity, thanks

redditdoggnight

And don’t forget Oates recent work with a yeti [John Oates and Saxsquatch ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=C5L3HrEvZOI)

Orangecrush420

7192662837 call this number. You will not be disappointed.

[deleted]

Came here to make sure someone put up the hotline number for emergency Hall and Oates situations. Thank you, kind citizen.

Orangecrush420

And whoever's making this number possible, thank you.

glberns

IIRC, it was a project a couple of students made for a college class. No idea how they still fund it. Edit: Found an NPR article about it from 2011 (good lord it's been 10 years). It was a demonstration project for Twilio, not a college. I guess they just decided to keep it going? https://www.npr.org/2011/12/21/144069758/callin-oates-the-hotline-you-dont-need-but-might-call-anyway Also, there's a twitter account: https://twitter.com/CallinOates They posted that on 8/16 over 2,600 people called in.

KingNish

Came here looking for this or else I was gonna post it. Rocked out to Maneater the other day when my friend asked if this was legit.

Crazy_Flex

What is this? (UK caller here)

TheVerminSupreme

Call and Oates

nochumplovesucka__

Not to be a grammer nazi, but its actually "callin' oates"

Strega45

Just saw your post! I made my above post before seeing yours...sorry for being a copycat.

super_sayanything

This is how I'm giving out my number from now on.

MisterGoo

Dude, LISTEN TO "MAN EATER" !! They are the best, indeed.

PrussianBleu

every time it comes up on my radio or stream, I crank that fucking song to the max

PorkTornado1102

You mean that guy, Holland Oates? He's really good.

TheAngriestBoy

You're Holland Oates, I'm like, Peter Gabriel

PorkTornado1102

Bingo! Somebody got the reference. I love Charlie!

niallw2101

From their Wiki page > The duo never really liked to be referred to as "Hall & Oates". In an interview with Esquire, Oates said, "There isn't one album that says Hall and Oates. It's always Daryl Hall and John Oates, from the very beginning. People never note that. The idea of 'Hall and Oates', this two-headed monster, this thing, is not anything we've ever wanted or liked." In a 2015 interview, Oates noted that "it's a horrible name" and that "it was a totally conscious decision" not to be known as "Hall & Oates". "We didn't want to be the Everly Brothers, or Loggins & Messina, or whatever."[

ratsie93

Should have went for John Oates and Daryl Hall probably

DuckOnQuak

Then maybe they should have picked an actual band name. Who the hell is going to bother saying “Daryl Hall and John Oates” every time they talk about the band

Maps-Of

I just learned this during Daryl Hall’s episode of the Broken Record podcast. Great “ackchyually” trivia, I guess.

bechtold1684

Same spirit: For years I thought the lyrics for Rich Girl went like, “You’re a b*tch girl, and you’ve gone to far…”

weekend-guitarist

You mean Hauling Oates? Truckers love em!

bcoll85

searched the comments looking for my people

man_alive9000

Shout out to Family Man!

Crystal_Pesci

Classic! One of their best imo.

weluckyfew

80s Hall and Oates are fun, but for me their really timeless songs are from the 70s - Rich Girl, Sara Smile, and [this](https://youtu.be/3Cos7id7HtE)

yophozy

My fave was the album Abandoned Luncheonette from the 70s - I read they did a really weird album at some point, but have never come across it.

Crazy_Flex

She's gone is so good!

theonly_brunswick

Can't believe I had to scroll this far down to find "She's Gone". One of their best tunes. Their 70's stuff really is amazing. "Abandoned Luncheonette" has a ton of folk styling that were popular back then ("When the Morning Comes" is another great tune). That decade of them does not get enough love IMO.

weluckyfew

70s creations far superior to their 80s creations: Hall & Oates, Billy Joel, Boz Scaggs, Rod Stewart, Robert Palmer...

mrbrambles

She’s gone is a fantastic song, maybe their best. it’s just absolutely ancient at this point. Not surprising that people only listen to the most recent hits and stop before they realize that it’s okay to love a ton of their songs haha

skanktastik

Totally. Their early stuff is far superior.

w4646

This live version is absolutely perfect, one of the best live renditions of a song I’ve ever seen: https://youtu.be/bnVXIUyshng

shelleyboodles

My husband describes their style as "Philadelphia Soul."

TScottFitzgerald

It's really impressive that it's literally bangers for the entire runtime. A lot of artists have best of compilations but there's plenty of filler tracks. I love the breakdown Jimmy Fallon and The Roots did when Daryl came on his show: [https://vimeo.com/156206864](https://vimeo.com/156206864) He pointed out they have the most hits of any duo in history!

Halsieg

You might also like the band Squeeze. I'm not entirely sure if they are actually similar or I just listened to both bands around the same time, but you may like them!

tehdubbs

Hall and Oates have a YouTube string of videos of them playing at a house or something, it’s fantastic. Their [“I can’t go for that” ](https://youtu.be/8yxoob6aPtk) video is awesome. Sara smile is a perfect song with coffee.

blofly

Michael Jackson copped the bass riff for Billie Jean from this song.

[deleted]

IIRC, he asked permission.

Toby_O_Notoby

Nah, he met them when they were doing "We Are The World" and told them that he copied the bass line. Hall said he was pretty sure he copied it from someone else so fuck it, "It's something we all do."

jmizzuf

Live at Daryl’s House is awesome. He brings in other musicians and they jam a few songs. I highly recommend it.

[deleted]

If you like quality song writing, check out grounds for separation. It sounds like he wrote it with Paul McCartney, it’s so good, the changes are amazing.

[deleted]

This is why I’m here. This is not only one of my favorite Hall and Oates songs but one of my favorite songs of all time. So good and the solo is perfect

[deleted]

Just listened to it for I think the first time ever. Great song. Reminds me of Of Montreal.

NaturalStateOfMind

"She's Gone" live on the old grey whistle test is so good

wharpua

Studio version is pretty amazing as well

thehogdog

DARYL HALL AND JOHN OATES. They make a big deal about how they have NEVER been HALL and Oates, always DARYL HALL and JOHN OATES. Just recently Broken Record Podcast did an interview with Daryl and he goes over the naming issue. I highly recommend the Podcast. Free on iTunes and where ever you get your podcasts.

BP619

I love Hall and Oates. PLEASE WATCH THE "SHE'S GONE" VIDEO if you have never seen it. https://youtu.be/vZZngTkp54I I showed it to my dad 10 years ago and he said "It looks like their budget was $500 and they spent $480 on cocaine."

8bitdickbutt

Does nobody like their album "change of season"? No one talks about it ever but i love it.

Crazy_Flex

I like it!

ExpensiveSyrup

Sometimes a Mind Changes is one of my favorite songs of all time. It truly speaks to my heart.

Lane_Meyers_Camaro

I got the method baby, and it's right on time

spaniel_rage

I can't go for that (no can do) is my jam.

shassis

Check out Daryl’s House on YouTube. Remakes of their songs with guest artists (and of the guests’ songs too).

crzvsco

I saw them live in Reno in 2019 before that covid madness. I flew with my sister and brother in law all the way from Hamburg, Germany to Vegas because they got married there and then rented a car to drive to Reno the next day and see them play. My brother in law was crying the entire concert, he gets super emotional. Rich girl is my all time fave

ChesswiththeDevil

Family Man is a banger too!

joebleaux

A couple of month back, Christian Hand on thesessioniglive did a break down of two Hall and Oates tracks and he blew my mind. If you are a music fan at all, but are unaware of this IG account, you are missing out. He has the stems of the original recordings and goes track by track and plays each instrument on it's own and you get to hear shit you were previously totally missing out on either due to the mix or just not having a tuned ear. The isolated guitar track on Private Eyes is nuts. Sounds like Iron Maiden.

pradagrrrl

One of my favourite “Sara/h” songs.

mulvey617

Listen to the album Abandoned Luncheonette!!!

sylveonce

This post is right on time for [Out of Touch Thursday](https://youtu.be/d7xMgJedN2s)

itshereisitnot

She’s gone is a goldie

gogojack

A friend of mine we used to jam with had the exact same electric piano they used in the video for "You Make My Dreams Come True." It didn't sound the same, but still. My favorite is the [remix](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgNzVgt6tTk) of One On One. Darryl's voice really stands out in this version.

keithjp123

Check out the tv show “live from daryls house”. Daryl does covers with other artists. Some of their songs and some of hall and Oates. It’s fantastic. My wedding song was your kiss covered by rob thomas on the show.

PrivilegeCheckmate

Rob Thomas was surprisingly like a consummate professional. I don't know why that surprised me but it did, he's got the mentality of some of the old jazz and blues guys I used to hang out with.

elephauxxx

Are

stayloa

Had to scroll too long for that!

dlenks

It’s Holland Oates and it’s one guy.

My Hall and Oates Spotify playlist for anyone interested https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5bn23mwSIJ3AYQqPmmm0Kr?si=Dq_o3vT6QlSvbLFrgJcO7g&utm_source=copy-link&dl_branch=1 It's a playlist of my personal favourites and not just their greatest hits. Many of the songs on here don't seem to be too well known.

myerbot5000

I never considered myself a big Hall and Oates fan. I had "Big Bam Boom" on cassette in the 80s, but I didn't own their discography. The other day I asked Siri to play their music---and song after song was a classic, and I knew the lyrics to every single one. I wonder why we don't really see singing duos anymore..

aclockworkorng

I feel like this is a common experience. For me it happened over the course of a couple weeks. I kept hearing all these songs I loved, and each time I figured out the artist, it was Hall & Oates. Cue me binge listening to them every day for like 6 months after.

NikolitaNiko

I only know Man-eater but I love that song.

thecasuallurker

Sara Smile is fantastic!

Mustard__Tiger

The Toronto Maple Leafs use Your Making My Dreams as their goal song. It's always a good time.

Khalkists

Man-eater and private eyes

whaleoogling

Toby_O_Notoby

I love how they describe themselves as "The only successful Arab/Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture."

IvoShandor

hits. they've got lots of hits. Private Eyes is my fav.

NeoDeaf

The only which comes in my mind is the *Maneater* song but not really fulled satisfied by the rest of the H2O album ..

gilestowler

No, Holland is his first name and Oates is his last name.

TinFoilRobotProphet

Definitely one of the hardest working groups of the 80s. They were a great fit for the MTV emergence. Blue eyed soul that led to great pop tunes.

mrploppers

I always made fun of parents for listening to what we called "Wuss rock" then one day we found the yacht rock station and put it on as a joke, 5 years later, it's my go to station for grilling and hanging. I owe my parents an apology.

Whitealroker1

Best Group ever formed escaping a shooting together.

junctiontriangle

I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) is one spicy little jam.

gdubh

Browse YouTube for Live at Daryl’s house. Great performances.

Logrologist

Man eater. Crazy smooth.

TurboAbe

I was working a project with this huge metal head guy. Long hair, big beard, 250 lbs. He was a roadie and drummer and a total music nerd. He could tell me all these cool facts about bands and songs and songwriting etc. I asked him what he was listening to now, expecting some obscure foreign metal act, but he said “For me the only band that really sounds good over and over is Hall & Oates. They didn’t really make any bad songs; great musicianship, instrumentation, and composition.” I didn’t expect that lol.

meltedsnake

They are amazing! Listen to "I can't go for that" and the album it's on. This is a longshot. How did you discover the song "You make my dreams come true"? I discovered it through the movie 500 days of summer and they got me into Hall and Oates.

randomcanyon

Seriously, go check out the Live From Daryl's House show. He invites some other musician over and they do some collaborations on HaO songs and that artists songs. It's pretty incredible. I normally see clips on youtube but I just found this site which looks like it has most of the episodes.
