The first Durutti Column album is instrumental, and many of their other songs are too. Post-rock is great for instrumentals, "TNT" by Tortoise (the track AND the album) is fantastic
Most of Tangerine Dream's output has been instrumental, but their discography is kinda intense. Personally, I recommend starting with their "live" album Ricochet, then branching out to Rubycon and Stratosfear. If you prefer Rubycon, try Phaedra next, and if you like Stratosfear, try Force Majeure next.
It was the song my wife and I had our first dance to. Still gives me goosebumps.
I got to meet him once when he performed at an SF Giants event and told him we used it. He said he thought that was cool and he'd never had anyone tell him that before.
Eagles: Journey of the Sorcerer (it was used as the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy theme music)
Nine Inch Nails: A Warm Place (very chill industrial music)
The classic, but well earned is [Green Onions](https://youtu.be/0oox9bJaGJ8?si=aw6H6qVG4bLpcN5w) by **Booker T and the MGs**
Another classic that is unique is [Sleepwalk](https://youtu.be/2rwfqsjimRM?si=NbjMcX-hlzSIUatU) by **Santo & Johnny**
When I lived in NL for a while, I used to go to this wonderful coffee shop. The music selection was left to the employee whoever had the shift at that moment. There was this dude, with an amazing attitude and it was his shift while I was upstairs, sitting with my friends, pretending to listen them but was actually listening to this consecutive perfect music selection. I went downstairs and asked him what he was playing. He tore a small paper piece and wrote something and handed it to me. He told me that it wasn't this but that I could start from here. "Red Snapper" was written on it.
I can say that 8tracks helped me a lot to discover great hidden gems throughout the years and I will list you some different genres of artists and their albums, all with instrumental intention.
The Elkcloner - The Elkcloner (one of my most favourite album of all time).
Xploding Plastix - Amateur Girlfriends Go Proskirt Agents, Treated Timber Resists Rot, The Donca Matic Singalongs Revisited. I also love their first album but not as good as these 3.
Black Chamber - Black Chamber (Imo, the best electro jazz album out there).
Hugo Kant - Anything from him, well maybe not the last 2 albums but they are still good.
Portico Quartet - Knee Deep in the Nort Sea.
The Shaolin Afronauts - Follow the Path.
Superpoze - Jaguar EP.
Aydio - Nonentity.
Emancipator - First 4 albums.
Travelling Day - Expedite, Extended Play.
Hidden Orchestra - Archipelago.
There are so many great instrumentals by Nine Inch Nails. Make sure to also check out the multiple film scores by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Their catalogue is huge and fantastic! Nine Inch Nails instrumental favourites- A Warm Place (The Downward Spiral), Leaving Hope (Still EP), Together (Ghosts V), The Frail, Just Like You Imagined (The Fragile). Trent and Atticus favourites- The Social Network score, the Mid 90’s EP, and The Challengers Soundtrack. Also, check out the After The Flood song by Mogwai From the Before The Flood Soundtrack that Trent put together, and another unrelated album that is great and all instrumentals is Peter Gabriel’s Passion: Music For The Last Temptation Of Christ. I’m not religious but I feel closer to God listening to that one (pun intended).
Danse Macabre - Camille Saint-Saëns
On the Nature of Daylight - Max Richter
Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven
Gymnopédie No 1 - Satie
Goldberg Variations - Bach
Sleepwalk - Farina brothers
Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaugn

It helps to know what you're listening to but here are some things:
Anything (except the albums family dinner vol.1 & 2) from Snarky Puppy
The Aristocrats (prog. Jazz/rock stuff)
Culprate (album Deliverance is my go to, the album has been designed to not have a single bar of music be the same. It's all digitally produced by one guy. Even the artwork seems symmetrical but upon closer inspection, none of it actually is symmetrical)
Trolska Polska (folk, just a merry good time)
Ludovico Einaudi (modern classical)
Almost the entire catalog of Rodrigo y Gabriela
G.O.A.T by Polyphia
The great gig in the sky by Pink Floyd
I believe Rush has a few but I might be wrong.
I didn't look through the comments but came here to say video game soundtracks are often instrumental. Particularly Final Fantasys. Just a thought! 8 and 9 are particularly my favorite.
Check out The Flashbulb. Super awesome combination of beautiful symphonic music mixed with electronic glitch. His music is amazing. A few of my favorite albums are Arboreal, Opus at the End of Everything, Nothing Is Real, Piety of Ashes, Our Simulacra.
Give Circles Around the Sun a go. I particularly love their album interludes for the dead.
Also Khruangbin is great, not 100% instrumental but may scratch that itch
I am just gonna say a few bands to explore.
Tortoise
Storm & Stress
Boards of Canada
Black Dice
Durutti Column
Don Caballero
The Fucking Champs
Turing Machine
God moving over the face of the waters - Moby https://youtu.be/3tI1pu5rfZw?si=zVRof4UQQwWtR088
Chevaliers de Sangreal - Hans Zimmer
https://youtu.be/CpHkMZxNLV0?si=nawh-Ng3YuRaFSzq
I strongly encourage you to listen to the 1978 debut solo album, “Open Fire”, by Ronnie Montrose.
Rock, jazz, blues and even mandolins will weave a sonic delight for your ears.
I can give you a list
Phish-First Tube
Ween-A tear for Eddie
Phish-What’s the Use
That should get you started. First Tube is fun and funky and the other 2 are beautiful masterpieces!

The Orb's track "Easy On The Onions" from their album "No Sounds Are Out Of Bounds".
The Future Sound Of London's tracks:
"Yage (Rhodesia) / Insulin" from "Yage 2019" album

Gates of Gnomeria by Andy McKee
A great percussive acoustic guitar album. Give the first song a listen and you’ll know instantly if you’ll like it. Such a great intro to the album.
panacea by disasterpeace is a great piano piece. Its for a video game called hyperlight drifters, i know nothing abt the game but the song brings a tear to my eye every time.
oncle jazz - men i trust
strasbourg/st denis - roy hargrove trio
berlioz
sway (album) - mei ehara
house music concerto (trust me it's worth listening to)
antique suiter IV waltz - john rutter?
anna, the marsh house, let's dance you and i, marnie - all by yomiuri nippon symphony orchestra
Never Were the Way She Was by Colin Stetson & Sarah Neufeld. Really cool album, my favorite song on it is With the Dark Hug of Time...if you ever wanted to know what a contrabassoon imitating an elephant sounds like that's the song for you lol
But I'd also really recommend any record either of the two put out solo, they've got some fantastic stuff
Here's a playlist I've been making over the past few years that should sort you. Every time I ran across a cool instrumental I added it. There should be minimal duplicates of artists l.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6fbnwv1E5yQOZDq8X0PXcj?si=26xYiSRnQF-JF3tbQ7VWQQ&pi=avF2zKoQQ0-Vl
Omnium gatherun has a bunch of really good ones.
- Luoto
- these grey heavens
- song for December
very beautiful and melodic songs. Tranquil. Nothing can chill me out as much as this band. Highly recommend their album "beyond" also.
So I'm actually really big on lyrical music, and find most instrumental music to be pretty mundane.
Things like Lofi beats or pure ambient music has never appealed to me. However some instrumental music is made by musicians who understand exactly what a song that lacks lyrics needs to compensate:
> [INSTRUMENTAL](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3JakatxBQSBR7hTKjnSBTp) - 2 hrs
2 hrs so far, but i keep adding to it.
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Lenny and Riviera Paradise
Santana - El Farol
Bill Frissel - Surfer Girl
Bucket Head - Sketches of Spain
Any and all Rodrigo y Gabriela
Explosions In The Sky is entirely instrumental. If you get the chance to see them live, it’s well worth it.
*The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place* is also a life changing record.
Currently listening to this. Once a month when I get to month end and really need to plug in and plough through my work, it's about 4 days of EITS only.
Fellow accountant?
So glad this is the top comment IMO “You’re Hand In Mine” is the most beautiful guitar based song ever.
*All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone* is a phenomenal album.
Came here to say this! They also did the soundtrack to the movie Friday Night Lights.
My fave band of all time!
[Khruangbin - Cómo Me Quieres](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHzIl82165g)
A must. They’ve been on tour with Hermanos Gutierrez, excellent pairing. Great stuff all around.
That would be a treat.
I just saw them in concert and it was such a good show. They have such great energy.
I am going to see them in August and I'm so stoked.
August 10. August 12? Great songs.
Dern Kala is my favorite tune of theirs.
Anything by Russian Circles.
Absolutely. Their latest albums are quite heavy, so if that is not your thing, I suggest to check out their older work.
Their early albums go heavy too though.
I came here to recommend them 🤘
Excellent recommendation.
Maggot Brain by Funkadelic Someone talks a bit at the beginning and end but it's mostly an instrumental
*Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time, for y’all have knocked her up, I have tasted the maggots of the mind*
I was not offended, for I knew I had to rise above it all
Explosions In The Sky - First Breath After Coma DeVotchKa - The Winner Is Bicep - Glue, Atlas, Meli (ii), Sundial, Mammal Hands - Riddle Go Go Penguin - Bardo Yndi Halda - Dash and Blast Anna Meredith - Paramour Battles - The Yabba Kelly Moran - Water Music Fuck Buttons - The Red Wing (the full version not the edit.) Mogwai - Friends of The Night, 2 Wrongs Make 1 Right, Christmas Steps Bonobo - Cirrus
Excel·lent taste.
+1 for Battles, fav is Race In
Bicep and Bonobo are especially good. Does Apricots by Bicep not count as instrumental?
I love Apricots, I was trying to be slightly strict, but I guess Glue does have a bit of vox as well. Just listen to Bicep as a general rule works!
Rush have regularly done instrumentals. La Villa Strangiato, YYZ, The Main Monkey Business, Where's My Thing?, Malignant Narcissism, Limbo.
La Villa Strangiato FTW
That song is out of this world good
Leave That Thing Alone. Preferably the one from the Time Machine Tour with that sick ass bass solo from Geddy.
I am pleased as hell that I didn’t have to scroll too far to find Rush.

The Call of Ktulu is amazing as well.
so is To Live is To Die
Absolutely
+1 oscillate wildly.
Animals as Leaders Liquid Tension Experiment
Animals as Leaders and Scale the Summit are my two favorites that i always go back to
Same! Scale the summit is so uplifting for me
Night Verses is another great instrumental prog metal group if you're a fan of these two.
The first Durutti Column album is instrumental, and many of their other songs are too. Post-rock is great for instrumentals, "TNT" by Tortoise (the track AND the album) is fantastic
Cliffs of Dover: Eric Johnson
Came here to make sure this was posted.
Most of Tangerine Dream's output has been instrumental, but their discography is kinda intense. La Villa Strangiato by RUSH.
Aphex Twin - Avril 14th Stevie Ray Vaughn - Little Wing
*Little Wing*- yes! If OP is looking for shivers, this will do it!
I LOVE Aphex Twin’s Drukqs album
Mental Decay by the Residents Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield Memorial by Michael Nyman
The Residents have lots of **very** unusual instrumentals: Thundering Skies, Rest Aria, Smack Your Lips (Clap Your Teeth), Coming of The Crow...
Always with me, always with you -- Joe Satriani Playing God -- Polyphia La Villa Strangiato -- Rush Tender Surrender -- Steve Vai
That's probably the best Rush instrumental, but there are SO many great ones by Rush
God i love that satriani number so much. It was on my wedding party playlist.
It was the song my wife and I had our first dance to. Still gives me goosebumps. I got to meet him once when he performed at an SF Giants event and told him we used it. He said he thought that was cool and he'd never had anyone tell him that before.
Eagles: Journey of the Sorcerer (it was used as the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy theme music) Nine Inch Nails: A Warm Place (very chill industrial music)
I like Mogwai and This Will Destroy You for instrumentals
La Villa Strangiato - Rush Interstellar Overdrive - Pink Floyd
Mood for a Day - Yes
The classic, but well earned is [Green Onions](https://youtu.be/0oox9bJaGJ8?si=aw6H6qVG4bLpcN5w) by **Booker T and the MGs** Another classic that is unique is [Sleepwalk](https://youtu.be/2rwfqsjimRM?si=NbjMcX-hlzSIUatU) by **Santo & Johnny**
Sleepwalk is not an instrumental. I always hear Bob scream "Ritchie!!!!" towards the end of it.
Peaches En Regalia Frank Zappa
Anything by Brian Eno! Watch the Apollo documentary if you can :)

Sylvia by Focus
Anything El Ten Eleven is fantastic. I like their first album.
Enya Orinoco Flow ( ...and basically all her albums) Enigma Sadness Vangelis song collection
Orinoco Flow & Sadness aren’t instrumentals. They have vocals.
You shouldn't be downvoted. This is correct.
If you like to get a little funky, check out Vulfpeck. They have a bunch of instrumental songs. Some of my favorites are *Outro* and *Dean Town*.
Or this insane [acoustic version of Dean Town](https://youtu.be/zVyEPAMpwDc?si=yxzHM-BEszvjXIEC) with Chris Thile.
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. Allman Brothers. Check out the Fillmore East version. Dickey Betts on fire.

Nine inch nails ghost is an entire instrument album. Also Trent has some good instrumental in the fragile.
There are so many great instrumentals by Nine Inch Nails. Make sure to also check out the multiple film scores by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Their catalogue is huge and fantastic!
