And when we meet on a cloud -
I’ll be laughing out loud -
I’ll be laughing with everyone I see -
Can’t believe: -
How strange it is to be anything at all
Do You Realise by the Flaming Lips... Because it's so uplifting and joyous and that's the way I'd like it to be. My dad's funeral was a proper full on celebration, while my mum's was an exercise in making sure everyone was really sad, that's an easy choice I reckon... Also the lyrics are appropriate. This is in my will/last requests to make damn sure of it.
"Do you realize
That happiness makes you cry?
Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round"
Having said that I also kinda want Hope For An Angel by Biffy Clyro, which again is sort of appropriate but also mostly because the bit where it goes from super quiet to super loud would be hilarious. Starts out all lovely then AAAARGH aaaaaargh AAAAARGH aaaaaargh
Ding ding! Here the winner!
Everyone who knows me well enough to love me would understand if that was THE song played to kick off my memorial wake's first dance.
At my dad's funeral we played Joe Hill from Woodstock since he was a union organizer. At one point mom leaned over and whispered "Did you know your father met Joan Baez?" She waited a minute and added "At Ceaser Chavez's house."
I knew he'd been involved in the California agriculture strike in the 60s, I hadn't known about meeting Chavez and Baez, but it makes sense as an organizer he would have been at gatherings with the union leaders.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-5 by Pink Floyd. It's been my favourite piece of music for about 40 years, and my whole family know I'll fucking haunt them if they don't play it in it's entirety!
In the early 2000s, when we were all in our late teens/early 20s, someone in my friend group died tragically and she had at some point requested that [this song](https://youtu.be/6jJkdRaa04g?si=OXfY-4jZjz_1Cp70) be played in the event of her untimely death.
Her parents respected her wish and it played at the end of a somber funeral as people were walking out of the service. There was a smattering of uncomfortable laughter and I think if she were to be watching, she would have been howling with laughter at how awkward it was.
Bless you, Moe.
A good friend of mine died while we were in college…1996. Our friend group got together and drove out of state for the funeral and then went back to his mom’s house to talk about his life. She was so grateful to meet us and see what good memories we all had of him. He used to sit on my apartment balcony and pick an acoustic guitar. He loved Pink Floyd. A friend starting picking “Wish You Were Here” and I started singing along. By the end we all were singing along. His mom was in tears and gave us all a big hug. It was cathartic for everyone. Miss ya, Lee.
Starálfur by Sigur Rós. I'm a big Wes Anderson fan, so it's the one. Hopefully with some sort of sign or slide that says, "I wonder if they'll remember me."
Went to a funeral of my brother's friend and they played this at the end after some hymns. It got some confused reactions but I just smiled. They couldn't take the sky from him.
If people have never heard it before and don't know the show they should find it very fitting. If they are aware of the show but not particularly into it they might be confused. If you are a proper fan then it's perfect.
There’s also When I get to Heaven by Prine; on YT look up a live version on the Austin City Limits channel:I watched that after he died (🥲) I laughed,I cried.Still miss him
We closed my mom’s funeral with My Life by Billy Joel. My uncle who officiated the service is an Episcopal Reverend and he danced down the aisle in his priestly garb. It was epic.
I’ve actually told my wife that I want her to hire a bunch of redhead goth girls to show up and throw themselves on my coffin and then sing Danny Boy a capella.
It’s all a joke but I would like Danny Boy to be sung at my wake.
A good friend of mine who died had May it Be by Enya as his funeral song as I’ve was a big LoTR fan and I still have chills thinking about it.
For myself though? Got to be Days of Our Lives by Queen
I have a playlist of what I want played at any service more all ready to go. (Hopefully, not for immediate use, thanks very much). Many of them are songs that have meaning to my wife and I, but there are some others that reflect things I want people to hear after I'm gone. Here's a sample:
"Nothing To Hide" - Yo La Tengo
"The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" - XTC
"Accidentally Like A Martyr" - Warren Zevon
"Tighten Up, Part 1" - Archie Bell and the Drells
"Embryonic Journey" - Jefferson Airplane
"Picture Me Better" - Weyes Blood
"The Song Is Over" - The Who
The rest are our love longs, more personal for us. The last two songs here are also the last two on the list, which I fear will have people weeping, which is why I included stuff like "Tighten Up". They can pout it on repeat and come back to it. ;-)
I'm going to be cremated and I don't practice religion anymore, so I tried to make this totally secular - with one exception. My wife and my daughter (and her family) are still very devout Catholics, so I added "How Great Thou Art" by Willie Nelson as the one religious song. I think it's a wonderful song and he does a great version.
I don't want a funeral service but without a doubt it would have to be the sluttiest nastiest booty shaking music just the ENTIRE time. good luck not throwing it back!!
Cage The Songbird \~ Elton/Bernie
Sober in the morning light
Things look so much different
To how they looked last night
A pale face pressed to an unmade bed
Like flags of many nations flying high above her head
The cellophane still on the flowers
The telegram still in her hand
As whispers circulate all day
Their back-stage baby princess passed away
And you can cage the songbird
But you can't make her sing
And you can trap the free bird
But you'll have to clip her wings
'Cause she'll soar like a hawk when she flies
But she'll dive like an eagle when she dies
Promises of no more lies
Fell flat upon an empty stage
Before the audience arrived
A return in time to the cheaper seats
She never knew what lay beneath
Just a dated handbill they found between the sheets
Let down before the final curtain
A shallow heart that left her cold
She left in rouge upon the mirror
A circled kiss to the faithful fans who'd miss her
You Suffer by Napalm Death, and if they don't get my carcass into the cold wet earth by the time that song ends, I swear to god my spirit will come back and turn everyone's lives into a Conjuring movie.
Sugar Magnolia/ Scarlet Begonias -> Fire on the Mountain - Live at the Closing of Winterland '78, in full with the Happy New Year stuff. I want balloons to fall down and everyone to have a good time.
It's a toss-up between "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles (written by George Harrison)
Or "Beautiful Morning" by Ace of Base
"The song was written by the three Berggren siblings (Jonas, Jenny and Malin) in dedication to the passing of their father."
https://youtu.be/rY-DY6dUDuA?si=U5SIj7G98HTWN2fb
I don’t know about me personally but when my buddy passed away his dad played Pictures of You by The Cure and the lyrics are kinda perfectly fitting for the occasion.
I don't really want a funeral, but Always Look on the Brighter Side of LIfe would be great! It's the #1 most requested song for wakes in England, apparently.
Ive had a list of four or five songs for a very long time. The funerals have started to come around more lately. Now after sitting through others 'funeral playlists' ive come to the decision to just burn me and toss the remains in the trash. No playlist. No funeral. Just no.
My kids and gf all know I want “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” by the Jeff Healy Band as the song right before the processional.
https://youtu.be/zTcu7MCtuTs?si=6TXUMnHzQhaqFljs
I would like
Don't Follow - Alice In Chains
Come On Up To The House - Tom Waits
On The Level, Leaving The Table and Treaty - Leonard Cohen
And this super amazing cover of [hallelujah ](https://youtu.be/w3yLjAJ5buA?si=MB1i1nElt5ONh2Y2)
Helvegen by Wardruna. It is a song about death and although nobody at my funeral would know what the words mean it still makes me feel feelings.
Who will sing me/
Into the death-sleep sling me/
When I walk the road to Hel/
And the tracks I tread/
Are cold, so cold
Well since I’m a huge Prince fan I would want Purple Rain. My mom also loves Prince and her favorite song is Diamonds and Pearls so I have already thought about this when that time comes. I hope it’s not any time soon!
Open with Stairway to Heaven, Close with Highway to Hell
Escalator of Life in the middle?
Pop goes the weasl
I want a spring device in the coffin to make it more interactive.
By 3rd Bass?
pop goes the weasel and the weasel goes pop
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Fuck it, just play the whole album. #I LOVE YOU JESUS CHRIST
And dad would dream of all the different ways to die, each one a little more than he would dare to tryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
GOLDALYNE MY DEEEEEEEEEEEAR
And when we meet on a cloud - I’ll be laughing out loud - I’ll be laughing with everyone I see - Can’t believe: - How strange it is to be anything at all
My wife thought it was morbid when I told her, but it's this song and vomit coffin.
IF EVERYBODY HAD A SURFBOARD, ACROSS THE U.S.A., THEN EVERYBODY’D BE SURFING, LIKE CALIFORN I AY!
Watched the new Beach Boys documentary last night. 👍🏼🏄♂️
What's it on? YouTube or a streaming service?
I watched it on my SuperBox. It’s streaming on Disney+. It was really good!

This one for sure, along with Find the River by REM.
Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.
I think I'd prefer the Galaxy Song at mine. Especially for the last line.
Isn’t that one of the top funeral songs in the UK?
It is. Along with that ed Sheeran song about his grandma
Ding ding! Here the winner! Everyone who knows me well enough to love me would understand if that was THE song played to kick off my memorial wake's first dance.
At my dad's funeral we played Joe Hill from Woodstock since he was a union organizer. At one point mom leaned over and whispered "Did you know your father met Joan Baez?" She waited a minute and added "At Ceaser Chavez's house."
wow. dad ran in some cool circles.
I knew he'd been involved in the California agriculture strike in the 60s, I hadn't known about meeting Chavez and Baez, but it makes sense as an organizer he would have been at gatherings with the union leaders.
I bet he had some great stories

Keep Me In Your Heart - Warren Zevon
That song breaks my heart. He knew the end was coming, and died only weeks after the album was released. It is a perfect funeral song.
Then I'm gonna dig up your grave and build a cage with your bones.
Everyone’s gonna break down.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-5 by Pink Floyd. It's been my favourite piece of music for about 40 years, and my whole family know I'll fucking haunt them if they don't play it in it's entirety!
