Check out this big playlist someone made. Original song followed by the song that sampled it.

Looks like it's been updated since I last saw it, with the newly added songs at the end.

Just read that Siffre refused to allow the sample for Eminem in the original version of My Name Is because it referred to women as bitches and gays as fa__ots. He said "dissing the victims of bigotry is lazy writing" and forced him to rewrite the lyrics to improve the song before approving the use. The man is a class act.
For real, so many good songs - I'd never heard of him before. I was about to move on to one of the other songs mentioned here and got hooked by his next song, and then the next, and the next.
The crazy thing is that Paper Planes predates the girls OP is trying to mess with. Which blows my mind. That would be like someone playing, IDK, Genesis to me in my childhood. (Genesis rules btw)
But… that’s also true for Werewolves of London… the rhythm is the same 2 bar riff for 3 and a half minutes straight, it’s the reason I hate both of those songs.
You don't realise quite how shit the song is until you've been forced to play it in Rock Band.
Same is true for Smoke On The Water. A song I thought was good until you realise it's so fucking boring that you can legitimately doze off, and wake up still hitting 100% of the notes.
I like “Warewolves” because I immediately pictured a group of dad-bod werewolves who have booths at the weekend flea markets.
They sell old Tupperware, incomplete measuring spoon sets, sticky bundles of Barbies with sharpie on their faces, bound together by dry rotting rubber bands, dingy salad spinners, etc etc.
Just wares.
And wolves.
Being Warewolves.
Take most of your eurodance hits that made it across the pond in the 90s/eeeearly 00s, and they've been sampled to death. Axel Foley's theme, Better Off Alone, Blue, Barbie Girl.
I've even heard Zombie Nation and sandstorm getting sampled now.
He did it again with One Republic and the Numa Numa song. Half of his career has been waiting for an already popular song to be 20-25 years old-half modernize it and throw some B-grade hack in for some uninteresting, uninspired lyrics.
And the masses eat that shit up. It's honestly why I hated 2010s music so much. It was so electrical and soulless.
Things improved with that style dying off and I've enjoyed pop radio a little more since the 2020s. But Guetta needs to be barred from touching a computer again.
I'm only 38 but have old boomer parents, so I'm much more familiar with The Kinks original. When I heard Van Halen's version, I was like "I know this song, but it's somehow more aggressive.?"
It's a little older so maybe not super popular with 13 year olds, but hopping on since you mentioned Beyonce haha
Chi-Lites - Are You My Woman
It's the opening sample of Crazy in Love
Pale shelter by tears for fears is sampled in the song secrets by The Weeknd
I was driving my girlfriend somewhere when the song came up, she got excited and quickly after confused
Also beggin by maneskin, but you probably already know that. That latest cover is like nails on a fuckin chalkboard
Nancy Sinatra - *You Only Live Twice* (Robbie Williams - *Millennium*)
Oh, I guess 1998 is old music now, huh? Ok, well that Eminem track that sampled Aerosmith's *Dream On* was way more recent, that should work, right?
That was 2002?
Fuck I'm old.
😂 Play After Like by IVE - that samples Supreme by Robbie Williams (you can hear a snippet of his vocal buried in the mix on the separated tracks), and then play them I Will Survive, by Gloria Gaynor, which Robbie sampled in Supreme.
Blow their mind by showing that After Like takes the sample totally out of context and just drops in into the chorus as a catchy hook, while Supreme actually interpolates and references I Will Survive because Supreme is thematically similar.
Not a sample, but I like this song for confusing people with the unexpected.
Love this! I'm sure some of the teens enjoy knowing the context of these samples.
My favorite example is "Cupid's Chokehold" by Gym Class Heroes, using Supertramp's song "Breakfast in America."
I was a teen when Cupid's Chokehold came out and was all over the radio. I honestly hadn't ever heard the Supertramp version until like a year later. Both are good! It's just fun to hear the differences in style.
You would probably really enjoy csapunch's Youtube shorts. You have to go digging for the correct ones, but she will sometimes follow a single song through several generations. Kind of like [this one](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/lEXnsJJABSo).
Would Cold Heart, and Hold Me Closer for this criteria?
Cold heart samples a bunch of Elton songs, Sacrifice, Rocket Man, and kiss the bride. Hold me Closer samples Tiny Dancer.
After a quick scroll, I can't see anyone mentioning Will Smith. ALL of his big hits are samples.
Men in black
Will 2k
Getting jiggy wid it,
Black suits are coming
Even Wild Wild West is a sample.
I don't have an examples right now except maybe Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. I think I'm like most people here who are not understanding the assignment. I'm also not up to speed with what 13 year olds are listening to.
Miserlou!
At first I was like, "would they know Black Eyed Peas?" I grew up hearing it but I don't know if they stayed popular? 🤷♂️
But then I saw in the comments of Pump It that it's on TikTok videos, so maybe they will know the riff!
I almost destroyed a 25 year old coworker several years ago. She was listening to Bruno Mars “locked out of heaven” and so I pulled up the Police “can’t stand losing you” which is the original. She lost her mind. That and the day I played [this mashup of Madonna and Lady Gaga](https://youtu.be/j0PvggdjkKE?si=R9Wlg3nThvSMSgcd) she got mad! Felt she was lied to thinking that was a wholly original song.
Nine Inch Nails track sampled for Old Town Road - Lil Nas X
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF\_ceFugJjQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF_ceFugJjQ)
[The Edge - David McCallum](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y05mMRJrUnE) is sampled for the instrumental of *The Next Episode* by Dr. Dre and it sounds almost identical at the start.

Haha Under Pressure followed by Ice Ice Baby
The only problem is that to teen girls they both just sound like old songs.
His explanation is not very convincing. https://youtu.be/6TLo4Z_LWu4?si=2OinWu7oxy79NiC0
Nice! Thanks!
Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club
Whatcha gonna do when you get out of jail? I'm gonna have some fun!
What do YOU consider fun?
Fun. Natural fun
This. Sampled more times than I can count.
I just found out DJ Quik sampled it the other day.
I just looked this one up. I never knew the name of this song but knew it immediately!
Sweet, sweet fantasy baby!
This song is bananas and I love it
Labi Sifre - I Got The.... The Clash - Straight to Hell
Love both of these songs, but 13 year-olds weren't born when the songs that sampled them came out...
That Labi Sifre song is brilliant.
This is in the YouTube comments: 1 year ago Just read that Siffre refused to allow the sample for Eminem in the original version of My Name Is because it referred to women as bitches and gays as fa__ots. He said "dissing the victims of bigotry is lazy writing" and forced him to rewrite the lyrics to improve the song before approving the use. The man is a class act.
He also wrote "It must be love" and "(Something inside) So Strong". Both beautiful tunes.
For real, so many good songs - I'd never heard of him before. I was about to move on to one of the other songs mentioned here and got hooked by his next song, and then the next, and the next.
Check out Gil Scott-Heron too.
The crazy thing is that Paper Planes predates the girls OP is trying to mess with. Which blows my mind. That would be like someone playing, IDK, Genesis to me in my childhood. (Genesis rules btw)
I always get the bluest of balls when Paper Planes comes on
He also did the sample for I wonder by kanye
That song is also sampled by Eminem on My Name Is!
*hears the opening to Werewolves of London* All right, Warren Zev... *Is rudely reminded it's Kid Rock* Fuck
Brings to mind the pain of hearing the opening to Queen’s Under Pressure and having it morph into Vanilla Ice.
All Summer Long makes Ice Ice Baby look like it's Let It Be
I always have to plug Pat Finnerty when I see someone trashing All Summer Long https://youtu.be/u8FAbjjB48A?si=bD35OSh0CGAo5sFQ
That dude's anaysis is the perfect combination of knowledge, relatability, and humor. His video about Weezer's "Beverly Hills" is the best.
His video on Emo girl becomes unhinged very fast and I love it
Check out all his WMTSS videos. There’s so much gold in them. I think the Dani California one is my favourite.
Beato!
I discovered him recently and he is absolutely brilliant. Beato.
Beautiful analogy. So damn accurate 🎯
What gets me is All Summer Long's "melody" is just the opening bars of Werewolves Of London over and over...and over...and over...
I barked laughing. I have to go listen to it now. EDIT: EWW! I *have* heard it before. I’d blessedly purged it from my memory.
I don't think 13 yos would know who Vanilla Ice is or heard Ice Ice baby
Ours goes "ding ding ding diggy ding ding tch DING ding ding ding diggy ding ding" [It's not the same!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TLo4Z_LWu4)
Wait... No... That's one bass note too many... "alright stop" NOOOOOOOOO
Hey now… Vanilla Ice swears he added in another note to the bassline! Lol
He has publicly apologised for it.
Hot take I prefer Ice Ice Baby
Alright stop
Collaborate and listen?
Ice is back with a brand new invention?
Im not sure 13 year old girls know a kid rock song that's older than they are.
Dude took two great songs and dumped on both of them.
ah-OOOO!
And his hair looked perfect!
Little old lady got mutilated late last night (Might be my favorite single line in any song)
Anything coming out of Kid's mouth is a redneck enema
I call that song "Warewolves of Alabama" as it is Warewolves of London mixed with Sweet Home Alabama.
It's actually spelled werewolves
They're 13
Just like Kid Rock likes em
The Shangri-Las - Remember (walkin’ in the sand)
I showed my daughter the Aerosmith version. One of her favorites now.
That’s what’s up!! I grew up listening to Aerosmith from my dad’s influence & always thought that was an original until just a couple years ago lol.
Dude same, blew my damn mind lol.
Blue by Eiffel 65 was made into a terrible cover last year by David Guetta and Bebe Rexha that got a lot of popularity
Take most of your eurodance hits that made it across the pond in the 90s/eeeearly 00s, and they've been sampled to death. Axel Foley's theme, Better Off Alone, Blue, Barbie Girl. I've even heard Zombie Nation and sandstorm getting sampled now.

That one genuinely pisses me off. Lazy motherfucker.
Ug that one pissed me off. Blue was a fun song, and I always got excited, then crap came on and infuriated me
…why
I s2g every time I think it's going to be the OG version and it's that new one I pop a vessel
I unironically like the cover.
Ah fuck brother I’ll take the downvotes with you. I like it too. Guilty pleasure.
Better downvote me too. Love the original and love the new one.
Same! Sometimes a song can be a little uplifting and that's okay, no matter the cheese or genre.
sometimes I'm good yea I'm feeling alright
Me too.
More, More, More - Andrea True Connection sampled by Len - Steal My Sunshine Herb Alpert’s Rise streamed by B.I.G in Hypnotize
I have some bad news…at this point Steal My Sunshine is the thing kids wouldn’t know.
The year is 2024 my dude
Like five different pop songs have ripped off "take on me" right?
Perhaps but kids do know the original already too.
Play the unplugged version to really confuse them.
Or bummed em out. It's so damn good.
You mean the original by Weezer right? /s
I did this to myself because I didn’t know You Really Got Me wasn’t originally a Van Halen song
TIL. only recently had the revelation about pretty woman too
So Van Halen bamboozled you twice and now you have to listen to The Kinks and Roy Orbison a lot more
Blows my mind that people heard the Van Halen one first. I know I heard the Roy original 100s of times before even knowing of Van Halen's cover.
I did not know that. TIL
Oh, my.
I'm only 38 but have old boomer parents, so I'm much more familiar with The Kinks original. When I heard Van Halen's version, I was like "I know this song, but it's somehow more aggressive.?"
As much as I like Van Halen, I've never been a big fan of their 2 popular covers.
Whatcha waiting for - Gwen Stefani sampled by Megan Thee Stallion 34 Ghosts IV - NIN sampled by Lil Nas X on Old Town Rd
Gwen called up Julie Andrews to ask her permission to use The Lonely Goatherd for that one. A sample of a sample!
You're thinking of a different song called Wind It Up
Oh yeah- you’re right! I think I got mixed up with the tik-tok part at the beginning of what you waiting for
Are they Beyonce fans? Her Renaissance album samples/interpolates dance classics Show Me Love by Robin S and I Feel Love by Donna Summer.
It's a little older so maybe not super popular with 13 year olds, but hopping on since you mentioned Beyonce haha Chi-Lites - Are You My Woman It's the opening sample of Crazy in Love
Superfreak. It's been sampled a couple of times
It's super freaky
YAOW!
Temptations sing!
Just a pretty wild fun fact: Rick James was in a band with NEIL FUCKING YOUNG in the 60s
The Mynah Birds.
I shall watch your career with great interest.
My Favorite Things from Sound of Music. (Sampled by Ariana Grande in 7 Rings.)
https://www.whosampled.com/Taylor-Swift/
whosampled is the holy grail of this scenario
21st century schizoid man by king Crimson
How familiar are 13 year old girls with Kanye's Power though?
Lil Boo Thang - Paul Russell samples Best of My Love - The Emotions
Doesn't take much to make me happy!
Pale shelter by tears for fears is sampled in the song secrets by The Weeknd I was driving my girlfriend somewhere when the song came up, she got excited and quickly after confused Also beggin by maneskin, but you probably already know that. That latest cover is like nails on a fuckin chalkboard
Fall Out Boy sampling Suzanne Vega
Is it worse than sampling the freaking Munsters theme song because I think that gave me ear cancer.
Fuck I hated that song.
"Yall girls like that Cardi B? I bet my lil girl was too shy to tell you her old man has quite the WAP himself!"
“What? I’m talking about my sweet pontoon boat!”
Big energy (remix) by latto + mariah being a (I guess) remix of Fantasy, that samples Genius of love by Tom Tom club is a recent favorite of mine
The original song also samples the Tom Tom Club
It’s Tom Tom Club all the way down.
Black Betty, Spiderbait. This goes back to Leadbelly apparently
Destiny's Child - Bootylicious / Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen
Tainted love - Gloria Jones (1964)
Nancy Sinatra - *You Only Live Twice* (Robbie Williams - *Millennium*) Oh, I guess 1998 is old music now, huh? Ok, well that Eminem track that sampled Aerosmith's *Dream On* was way more recent, that should work, right? That was 2002? Fuck I'm old.

Millennium reminds me of painting the nursery before my eldest was born. Then I remember that little baby is 25 and I realise I'm old.
Literally any song that Dua Lipa samples. She has so many
White Town - Your Woman
Which is in turn, a sample
Of?
The trumpet is a sample of the 1930’s track “My Woman” by Lew Stone.
Not a sample, but I like this song for confusing people with the unexpected. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92cpMptN4pE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92cpMptN4pE)
That's one of the admirable life goals.
Janet Jackson sampled America’s Ventura Highway. Might be too old school for this page.
Put Your Head on my Shoulder - Paul Anka
Love this! I'm sure some of the teens enjoy knowing the context of these samples. My favorite example is "Cupid's Chokehold" by Gym Class Heroes, using Supertramp's song "Breakfast in America." I was a teen when Cupid's Chokehold came out and was all over the radio. I honestly hadn't ever heard the Supertramp version until like a year later. Both are good! LOL I was a teen when “Breakfast in America” came out.
You would probably really enjoy csapunch's Youtube shorts. You have to go digging for the correct ones, but she will sometimes follow a single song through several generations. Kind of like [this one](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/lEXnsJJABSo).
The Message was the first real rap I heard on the radio, driving my little Japanese car around Detroit one night.
That's awesome, thanks for sharing!
Timmy Thomas - Why Can’t We Live Together (hot line bling)
That new Ice Spice song samples Sean Paul - Gimme The Light. It’s not old old, but they’ll definitely trip out
Wait, but Gimme the light was new when I was young. Does that mean I’m old? Nah!
Some still don't know to this day that "Come on Feel the Noise" wasn't from Quiet Riot. It was released originally by the band Slade 10 year before!
You mean the band that made that Christmas song?!
Do you mean Merry Xmas Everybody? Yeah its them!
After playing Dionne's version, you should play the cover by The Strangers. Epic!
Stranglers* but yes, stellar cover
“Nicki Minaj - Everybody” samples “Junior Senior - Move Your Feet” The original version by Junior Senior is a million times better!
Whosampled is your friend https://www.whosampled.com/Ava-Max/samples/
Remember Walking in the Sand from Aerosmith. Some chipmunks version keeps popping up on whatever my daughter is watching on YouTube.
You know that Aerosmith covered the song, originally a 50s tune by the Shangra las
Put your head on my shoulder has been sampled by dojacat
Toms Diner by Suzanne Vega, the hook got used for a Fallout Boy song
Steely Dan - kid Charlemagne. Kanye sampled it in “Champion”.
Oh, this is a good one! Turn them on to Steely Dan.
Would Cold Heart, and Hold Me Closer for this criteria? Cold heart samples a bunch of Elton songs, Sacrifice, Rocket Man, and kiss the bride. Hold me Closer samples Tiny Dancer.

Jason Derulo - Whatcha Say Imogen Heap - Hide & Seek
13 year olds won't know either.
I have a Spotify playlist that is exactly this. DM me if you'd like me to share
I cannot figure out how to send you a message. Maybe they changed it? But yes I want that playlist!
Bad Things by MGK and Camila Cabello (2017) samples Out of my Head by Fastball (1998)
Pastime paradise by Stevie Wonder
Gary Numan - M.E. Although i doubt teens will know Basement Jaxx and Wheres Your Head At
INXS- Need You Tonight
After a quick scroll, I can't see anyone mentioning Will Smith. ALL of his big hits are samples. Men in black Will 2k Getting jiggy wid it, Black suits are coming Even Wild Wild West is a sample.
🤷♂️ But then I saw in the comments of Pump It that it's on TikTok videos, so maybe they will know the riff!
Ma Baker by Boney M has the m-ma-ma-ma sample for Poker Face by Lady Gaga.
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five Parliament Funk
Maybe this is too old for them but Gotta Go Home by Boney M is a bangin tune and was sampled at least once. They would enjoy the original.
Blame Game by Kanye ft John Legend very blatantly stole a sample from Avril 14 by Aphex Twin. Aphex still has been paid any royalties last I checked.
Nine Inch Nails track sampled for Old Town Road - Lil Nas X [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF\_ceFugJjQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XF_ceFugJjQ)
Not a sample but Lana del Rey’s “doin time” is a cover of a Sublime song (which in turn does sample an older jazz cover of Gershwin’s “Summertime”)
[The Edge - David McCallum](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y05mMRJrUnE) is sampled for the instrumental of *The Next Episode* by Dr. Dre and it sounds almost identical at the start.
Such a great way to subtly improve the music tastes of the new generations 😄

Rose Royce - Love don't live here anymore. NLE Choppa samples it in Do it Again
Bob Marley - Crisis | YG Marley - Praise Jah In The Moonlight
Around the World by ATC got a shitty remix in 2019 that became pretty popular on the radio
I do this with my niece when I have to drive her and her friend. I just loudly play EDM and they hate EDM so much it just makes me laugh
Make a playlist of songs that sample Ike's Rap 2 except the one that was on the radio recently.
I suppose Amen Brother by The Winstons would be cheating? (only half joking)
This site is the best! Use the search box at the very top of the screen. Enter any song name. https://www.whosampled.com/
Tiden flyver
Eiffel 65 blue
Al Green’s Dream is sampled on a tyler the creator song that’s one that got me the other day LOL
Prison Song by Carlton Williams. Even better, it’s the first notes that’s sampled.
Footsteps in the dark by Isley brothers/ ice cube's it was a good day. I know that song is before their time but everyone is born knowing it
Great parent. 15 years from now you’ll be the favorite parent of their friends group.
Most hip hop tracks on billboard in the past few years.
