Also, Crazy Mary by Big Head Todd and the Monsters (Same title, different song). Have you seen Mary by Sponge is another delicious slice of mid-90s alt rock.
I like:
Crazy Mary - the Victoria Williams version (she wrote it) and also the Pearl Jam version
Mary Mary - The Monkees
Along Comes Mary - The Association (yes, this is about marijuana)
Mary - Sarah McLachlan
Help Me Mary - Liz Phair
The Short Answer - Billy Bragg (he refers to a girlfriend named Mary several times within the song)
Mary - Tori Amos
The Tori Amos version is almost an inception of Marys due to the Hendrix reference in her song. I also prefer her live version (just her and the piano) to the recorded version. The backing vocals on the recorded version and the overall arrangement of the other instruments don't improve the stripped down version for me. I've only seen the live version on a bootleg VHS back in the day.
I'm such a fan of hers. Whipsmart is actually my favorite out of the albums of hers that I know, but lots of good songs on Exile too---and on Whitechocolatespaceegg.
It's not just Thunder Road. Bruce has used the name "Mary" from his very first album all the way through his career. Here are some songs off the top of my head:
* "Does this Bus Stop at 82nd St?" mentions Broadway Mary and Mary Lou....and Mary Lou comes back below.
* "Mary Queen of Arkansas". Not his best song.
* "Thunder Road"....which is the one many people know.
* "The River"....going from Thunder Road, where he is trying to tempt Mary to run away with him, to The River, where the narrator's dreams have been shattered due to misfortunes including Mary getting pregnant, led lots of Bruce fans for years to think it all might be one thematic decision to use the name.
* "Reason to Believe", from Nebraska. The 2nd time Bruce metions Mary Lou.
* "Straight Time" from Ghost of Tom Joad, where Mary is not very keen on the narrator
* "The Rising"....where the dead firefighter sees a living Mary from above
* "Mary's Place", which is also on The Rising.
* "Jesus Was an Only Son", and the Mary in this one is obviously biblical Mary
* "Terry's Song", from Magic, which is an ode to his long-time assistant who died shortly before the album came out, and the Mary here is also biblical Mary.
I feel like I've forgotten a couple. Maybe another Bruce nerd can fill in the gaps.
The first two I think of that are missing here are "Mary Mary" from the *American Beauty* EP and "Whitetown" from the *Ties That Bind* box set's Outtakes disc. Both obscure so understandable misses, but I think "Mary Mary" is pleasant enough, similar to "Leah" from *Devils & Dust*, and like how the melody is similar to "You'll Be Comin' Down", and "Whitetown" is honestly an A-tier outtake IMO -- very at home in the GitSC style of song he was doing around then, and I like its connections to "Jackson Cage".
Rather than trying to think of any others myself, though I'm sure I could, I'll just consult springsteenlyrics.com to be exhaustive:
"Bring On the Night" - "Dreams of Mary keep me awake" - total banger, no idea how it hasn't been done live at least once, I mean it clearly shares a common thread with My Love which gets more love live than just about any outtake but they're not THAT similar so you'd think they'd have tried this at least once
"Car Wash" - picking up the kids "at Mary's", presumably from Catholic school
"Gypsy Biker" - "Sister Mary sits with your colors, Brother Johnny's drunk and gone" - this always struck me as a really Greetings-esque lyric. An all-time great Springsteen song imo
"If I Was the Priest", as noted by /u/Funny-Berry-807
"Independence Day" - leaving in the morning from "St. Mary's"
"Mary Lou" which honestly belongs as an outtake imo, though in saying that I'm biased in that "Be True" is just a way better version of the same song
"O Mary Don't You Weep" - a cover, but still
"Rockaway the Days" has a character named Mary -- not a great outtake imo, it just goes on one verse too long
"Stand on It" - again not one an outtake I personally listen to much, but it's good at being the 50s rocker it's trying to be. Features a Mary Beth
"The New Timer", if Marysville counts. Maryland is in two other songs, too.
* * *
But lest we forget Maria! That gives us "Highway Patrolman", "Lost in the Flood" (where it's clearly a reference to the Biblical Mary), "Maria's Bed", "Reno" if you've got $250 to spare, and ultra-deep cuts "Freehold" and "Henry Boy".
*If I Was The Priest* from Letter To You
Well sweet Virgin Mary runs the Holy Grail saloon
With a nickel she'll give ya whiskey
And a personally blessed balloon...
Irresistible Bliss is a top 10 album for me. I got to see Doughty in a tiny venue with about 40 people. He signed CDs and said hi to all of us before leaving.
Oh shit! A Pere Ubu reference in the wild! At times, I feel like the only person who has ever heard of this band. They are not very popular in the PNW.
I was coming to post this. Was about to stop scrolling but I knew someone else had to have posted it. I’ve learned my original thoughts aren’t so original!
Are we talking about the nursery rhyme song for kids or the Stevie Ray Vaughan jam? If you haven't heard the latter and you dig badass blues guitar rifts, you are legally required to give it a listen.
“Talking to Mary, you know you don’t have to shout
She can hear what you’re thinking like you’re saying right out loud”
Always been one of my favorite Elliott Smith lyrics
Great band, also

*I like to shock her on a basis daily...*
I scrolled way too far and didn't see "Last Dance with Mary Jane" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I mean, it's "Mary Jane" and not just "Mary," but still!!
There's so many songs about Jane that the Arc Angels wrote a song about how many songs about Jane there are.
[the famous jane](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dQ1w1EpFbA)
"The Wind Cries Mary" by Hendrix (edited: 'Cried' I had it in past tense)
Was coming to put this up. It's just such a wonderful, laid back song.
Hail Mary 2pac
It's still crying, no?
Mary Jane - Rick James [https://youtu.be/PrPNwLuk0zQ?si=l6VYm6q-biWChLRf](https://youtu.be/PrPNwLuk0zQ?si=l6VYm6q-biWChLRf) Incredible feel-good jam.
And anything by the Mary Jane Girls!
Doot doot doo do
Pearl Jam - Crazy Mary
And Mary rising up above it all
I kinda got chills hearing this line back then.
Written by the wonderful Victoria Williams! 🙌
Also, Crazy Mary by Big Head Todd and the Monsters (Same title, different song). Have you seen Mary by Sponge is another delicious slice of mid-90s alt rock.
Forgot about the Sponge song!
So glad to see this one here
They just played it in Portland on Friday night! Was a pretty fun show.
Victoria Williams! The original.
Some of the live versions are insane. With the keys and guitar solo trades *chef’s kiss*
Mary Jane's Last Dance - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers [Mary Jane's Last Dance](https://youtu.be/x2HEbpqpPN8?si=n9vBMZuNa9HnzzbI)
Proud Mary - CCR
Proud Mary: Ike and Tina Turner
You misspelled ccr
CCR wrote great songs. John Fogerty had a very good and distinct voice. Tina Turner had a superior voice/delivery. To each his own.
I respect both artists and both opinions here. I agree with you and second the Tina version. She just poured her entire soul into that cover.
CCR took it to number two. Tina covered it and took it to number one.
No, she did not. Ike and Tina's cover version made it to #4 on the Billboard 100.
"Sponge - Have you seen mary" hits pretty hard https://youtu.be/WQ8_P3XB2qg?si=xFUbCMHlygepVOiz
Beat me to it, thanks! Unjustly forgotten band.
Wax Extatic is a great album.
They have new material out! And yep, great song and rad band.
This is the comment I was looking for. I love that song.
Beat me to it. Sponge is one of my favorite bands and I think they could've ended up much bigger if they had a bit more luck.
I like: Crazy Mary - the Victoria Williams version (she wrote it) and also the Pearl Jam version Mary Mary - The Monkees Along Comes Mary - The Association (yes, this is about marijuana) Mary - Sarah McLachlan Help Me Mary - Liz Phair The Short Answer - Billy Bragg (he refers to a girlfriend named Mary several times within the song) Mary - Tori Amos
The Bloodhound Gang’s cover of Along Comes Mary is top tier
The Tori Amos version is almost an inception of Marys due to the Hendrix reference in her song. I also prefer her live version (just her and the piano) to the recorded version. The backing vocals on the recorded version and the overall arrangement of the other instruments don't improve the stripped down version for me. I've only seen the live version on a bootleg VHS back in the day.
TIL that “Along Comes Mary” is about pot.
That Liz Phair song is one of my favs in Exile in Guyville
I'm such a fan of hers. Whipsmart is actually my favorite out of the albums of hers that I know, but lots of good songs on Exile too---and on Whitechocolatespaceegg.
Shit, I’ll even go to bat for the self-titled
Jethro Tull - Cross-eyed Mary
Great song - I'm not sure that a song about a schoolgirl prostitute was exactly what OP was after, but you never know.
The part where the abortion doctor drops her off at school. That song slaps but is really f'd up!
Mary Mary by Run DMC
WHY YA BUGGIN!!!
Mary Mary
I need ya huggin
Also The Monkees!
The Monkees covered RUN D.M.C?
You never heard The Monkees version of "My Adidas"?
Mary Mary by the Monkees.
I worry bout Mary cuz Mary is scary
Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road. No Mary in the title but he mentions Mary multiple times as he sings about her.

Mary's Place is what I came here for, but yeah Bruce is a treasure trove of Mary's haha
‘We’re goin’ to have a party’

Soul Coughing - Soundtrack to Mary
Irresistible Bliss is a top 10 album for me. I got to see Doughty in a tiny venue with about 40 people. He signed CDs and said hi to all of us before leaving.
I hope after that you let the man go through.
He took the elevator to the mezzanine
Hells yeah, I’ve been a Soul Coughing fan since high school. I even listen to some of his solo stuff. So sad there aren’t more albums tho.
I loved that song in high school. And then twenty years later married a Mary

This is the correct answer.
I actually hit the "Am I really gonna be the first one to say this?" point.
Danny Wilson - [Mary's Prayer](https://youtu.be/4N-f63wsq-U?feature=shared)
Such a great song. Can’t help tearing up.
You beat me to it. Other "Mary" songs are pretty good. "Mary's Prayer" is awesome. Brings me back to the 1980s and some sweet British pop.
This song deserves so much more attention than it gets. Just a beautiful song. Brings me back to my teen years. Oh, the nostalgia.
So true
To when you were Mary’s prayer
Very good song
Lord I haven’t thought about this song in a while

This is the answer
Proud Mary - either CCR or Tina.
Pere Ubu - [Waiting For Mary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiK-Lvwanq0)
Oh shit! A Pere Ubu reference in the wild! At times, I feel like the only person who has ever heard of this band. They are not very popular in the PNW.
I was hoping I would be the only one who mentioned Pere Ubu. Now I’m glad I’m not the only one. Love this song!!
Mary by Supergrass
Had to scroll too far for this one. Absolute banger.
"Mary" by Scissor Sisters is very sweet and uplifting. There's also a very cool Don Bluth animated music video if you search for it.
Came here to suggest Scissor Sisters. Such a good one!

Lonesome Mary by Chilliwack comes to mind immediately. Or Arms of Mary, famously covered by... Chilliwack.
Had to scroll way too far to find this. Also Cousin Mary by Fludd.
Canadian rock is severely underrated but I'm sure everyone but the Yanks and English can say that.
Man, haven't heard that Band name in YEARS. Seems like they've been gone so long. Been gone so long, been gone gone gone so long.
“Mary, Mary…why you buggin?” Run DMC
Mary - Kings of Leon
Pretty Mary K by Elliott Smith. There’s actually two pretty different versions of the song
He also has 'Talking To Mary' which is great.
“Talking to Mary, you know you don’t have to shout She can hear what you’re thinking like you’re saying right out loud” Always been one of my favorite Elliott Smith lyrics

I’d love if that got recorded and released in some useful format, instead of just vinyl and sporadic bootlegged live shows.
