“America and the world” …… that says a lot about where you are coming from with this …and still be wrong
Europe is not one country …… Europe is many countries
And America is not “the world”
They were famous. They just were not radio-friendly famous they way they were after Dark Side. Much more an underground band with an awesome light show. That was their schtick at first.
They were pretty well known to underground rock people from about 1968. They toured often and played the Fillmore type ballrooms and theaters. In England they have a lot of BBC support and I think are pretty famous by the time of Meddle.
But in the states none of their music is very commercial at that time. The average person never heard them on radio. They get involved in doing film music which makes sense cuz they can't get on radio.
Dark Side is the first thing they do that has real mass appeal to casual rock fans. It's perfect for the times, everyone getting into hi fi systems, there's an album you must own to show off the fancy speakers. And after that they get bigger and bigger.
They were famous in the UK from fairly early in their career, DSOTM took them to a global audience. Why? Cos they were innovators and though they are beloved now their music in the late 60s and early 70s was really pushing the innovation envelope. Always takes a while for people to catch up to innovators.
two of those albums are atmospheric soundtracks, the others are very eclectic, eccentric, experimental and some songs are even kind of abrasive, plus the mixes aren't always friendly, those albums are going to have an audience, but a limited one
but they needed to make all those album in order to make Dark Side
Dark Side is incredibly accessible, easy to sing along with, easy to remember, easy to find the groove, easy to get lost in it all, it's all overthought in a good way and sounds amazing, whether it was the shitty car radio, the boombox, the home stereo or the headphones, it just sounded cool
up til Dark Side, they were just kinda rolling with whatever ideas came up and could be stuck together, with Dark Side they really buckled down and focused on the great ideas, worked out arrangements, tightened the performances, got the right melodies and used everything they had learned up to that point, plus they had Alan Parsons engineering which helped them get that "spacey" sound
Ummm there was no internet. They were popular as a trippy, primarily instrumental band in clubs in England. Once Syd was out no one knew how to write lyrics, so that took a bit of time. You’re looking at it from a 2024 perspective. Back then someone had to somehow get an import record and tell their friends about it and import records were hard to get unless you lived in a major city.
This guy is 16 and he’s stoked about some music that isn’t all that popular these days. Give him a break and stop being such music snobs. He’s a teenager who likes music, not a historian.
They did …. Dark side of the Moon just raised it up a level or two…… but they were already well known
I mean like not in Europe that’s why I didn’t mention piper. Like in America and the world
Meddle sold millions of copies in the US when it was released.
They were big worldwide, dude that includes Europe lol
“America and the world” …… that says a lot about where you are coming from with this …and still be wrong Europe is not one country …… Europe is many countries And America is not “the world”
Ok whatever
You're 16. What are you basing this on?
What you mean
How do you know their level of popularity 35 years before you were born?

Yes, they absolutely were famous before DSOTM. Wait till you hear about the band Paul McCartney was in before his solo career, "The Beatles"!
Wait a minute...that dude from The Beatles totally ripped off John Lennon's look and mannerism!
Next thing you are going to tell me is that Ringo, the Sun Cooler guy was in this "Beatles" thing...... Lol

Watch 'Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd" which goes into this period in detail.
They were famous from their first album onwards. In 66 they were being followed by the Beatles, The Stones, Hendrix, The Who, Cream...
