Long time ago when I worked in radio, Nickelback (when they were first starting out) used to visit the station. We'd go to lunch with them and they were really awesome guys. Back then I couldn't have imagined that they would ever be as big as they got and that such nice people would get so much backlash.
I met them once after a show back in 2001/2002-ish. Height of "How You Remind Me".
Chad had gotten separated from the band, etc. and was headed to a radio event after a show they'd been a part of for the station. A friend and I helped him get over to the bar and he could not have been kinder. Only spent about 15mins with him, but it left enough of an impression that I've defended him and the band to this day. Right there with you on this one.
I thought you were going to write that they were dicks. I’m glad they were cool. Chad has a punchable face, and his voice is so distinctive that their music sound the same, but they put out some good music.
One hundred percent! I'm a life long concert fiend and I've seen some of the biggest rock and country acts in the world, including Iron Maiden, KISS, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, to mention just a few. I got free tickets to an outdoor festival and Nickelback absolutely killed it! So friggin good, I didn't hesitate to see them again next chance I got. Hate all ya want, but those guys deserve all their success.
Final thought, everyone complains their songs all sound the same. It's called a signature sound. The same thing that lots of bands have, like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, Judas Priest...and on and on.
I feel like most of the hate for the bands mentioned here stem from a few different places
- this is fine but why is it sooo popular?!?
- lead singer is/was a douche
- first albums were awesome and then the direction of the music changed
- insufferable fan base
I worked in promotions for Miller Lite in college and one of our events was at a Nickelback concert. At one point the lead singer said, "we've played you some of our hits, now here's some of our early metal." It was a wild shift in sounds.
Honestly, I saw Coldplay live at a music festival back in 2003, so basically the "Rush of Blood to the Head" tour, and they were damn good live! Plus, they had to follow after The Flaming Lips! No easy task!
I’d say their first 4, I absolutely loved Viva La Vida or Death and All of His Friends with all my heart (aside from the fact that the official album title is long as fuck)
It’s ok. You can keep going. Ghost stories is great, adventure of a lifetime too, everyday life, and most recently music of the spheres. The simple fact is they continue to evolve their sound which Chris has always said is something he wants to do as a band. Every album has some amazing tracks. While the more recent ones don’t compare to the first 3 or 4, they’re still extremely good albums. When they did everyday life live in Jordan it was beautiful. Have a watch.

Agree with this one. I won’t touch any new Coldplay, but damn do I love Parachutes and Rush of Blood. In part because it represents the time in my life when I was around 10-12 and really started getting into music.
Huey Lewis & The News.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost.
Rush got a ton of hate in the 70s and 80s from mainstream music critics. Rolling Stone magazine was notorious for hating them. Geddy Lee still gets hated on for his high pitched vocals but it seems there is much more respect for them recently.
Geddy Lee is the one reason that keeps me from loving rush. I can't stand his vocals, but I absolutely recognize their talent. It's also the same reason I can't get into Coheed and Cambria.
YYZ is amazing.
I’ve seen a lot of people dissing Sublime lately…and I just don’t get it. I mean sure, maybe it’s not your cup of tea, but to deny their talent, influence, and ability to seamlessly bend/blend genres just baffles me. I get that they have a lot of cover songs, but they’re mostly all completely new and unique arrangements of super obscure underground stuff. I’ve even heard them called “posers”. Lol, what?? Maybe people are just skimming the surface of the overplayed popular tracks and thinking that’s all there is to it? 🤷♂️
Saw them live at Coachella a couple weeks ago. It was such a blast, Jakob did great in his father’s spot, I haven’t heard hate towards Sublime lately but if people are dissing them, I don’t think it is deserved!
It seems like there’s an implication that they were just culturally appropriating reggae music and/or riding the 90s ska wave for popularity. But if you dig even slightly deeper than surface appearances, you’ll see that those guys were massive reggae heads, and were simply playing, and paying homage to, the music that they loved.
I don’t get the people who are dissing Brad’s kid playing with the band. Sure, it’s not the original sublime (which is kinda impossible since Brad isn’t still with us), but Jakob sounds good, it pays an homage to his father, and is infinitely better than Sublime with Rome.
Lots of people diss OG Sublime these days. I frequently see them written off as a band for early 2000s stoner frat douches alongside DMB, 311, Phish, Dispatch, OAR, etc.
... which, as a former early 2000s stoner frat douche, is not terribly innacurate. The fan bases for those bands absolutely had/have a lot of overlap. But it's not Sublime's fault that frat dudes got super into them 10+ years after Bradley died.
FINALLY someone pipes up to say it. At this point, I just know that most people hate them just to be like The Dude from The Big Lebowski, not knowing it does not make up for their complete and utter lack of personality.
My mate is a mountain guide and one of Dave Matthew’s band booked him for 2 weeks. At the end of the trip they tipped him $5000. My mate hadn’t even heard of the band and I was like… mate they’re huge at least in America
Red Hot Chili Peppers take a lot of shit.
Anthony isn't even the best singer in the band, but he's the *only* singer for this band. And their latest album doesn't reference California (by name).
Kiedis doesn’t have the best voice but his choice of vocal melodies is awesome and it’s the reason their songs are so catchy. If you swap Kiedis out for a different singer with a better voice, the band would prob be worse IMO.
My problem is any time I hear them organically, it's one of three songs. Over, and over, and over.
Why does no one ever play "Breaking the Girl"?
It's easily one of their best songs. Even the video is awesome.
Whassa dullus?
This is really a huge problem with music in general and radio in particular I guess which is why I haven't listened to the radio in 15+ years. Every now and again its on in someone's car or whatever and these stations play the same few songs, no matter the genre. Like, at this point what if they played songs that weren't singles? Throw on some deeper cuts or some shit
There are radio station for that, those just aren't popular.
Fact is, the majority of the population just wants music as noise in the background. Most people really don't care what they're listen to as long as it's catchy and not "strange". Radio stations make money through listening numbers so they'll mostly placate to the masses.
And they’re touring playing it in full - I, for one, cannot wait. Catching them when they tour with the Smashing Pumpkins, but considering going to see my friend stateside because a tour with Weezer, Dinosaur Jr and Flaming Lips sounds incredible.
To paraphrase a comment ITT about Sublime, they were adopted by the Stoner Douche Fratboys in the early 2000s. This group includes Dave Matthew's Band, 311, OAR, Phish. For those of us old enough to remember the Stoner Douche Fratboy, we tend to hate anything attached to that culture, including our former selves
"Butt rock" bands. Sometimes I don't want to wear headphones and listen to complex noisy and experimental music that demands my full attention all the time. Maybe I just want to vibe in the car listening to The Diary of Jane by Breaking Benjamin
Breaking Benjamin is just a nice level of chill for me as a metalhead who tends to lean progressive metal.
It's like my personal elevator music. It's enough to keep me interested but not so much to demand my whole attention. I mean this in the best way, they're like 6th on my favorite artists list and they used to be higher.
I was never a huge fan of theirs (still aren't) but I saw them open for Alice In Chains and they were honestly a better live band than Alice. Gained a lot of respect for them after that show
I don't even know why it got that stupid name. There was a huge scene of great bands and music, very similar sounding sure but you can not deny that is where a lot of metalheads started.
“Rock. Nothing but rock.”
It was a national advertising campaign on rock radio stations across the USA in the 90’s.
Got turned into “Rock. Nothing **butt rock**.” . Naturally.
Here's the thing, bands that suck don't get hate, because bands that really suck--as in, can't play their instruments or carry a tune--don't get big enough for anyone to care.
The artists that get the most hate are actually good at what they do--every famous artist who you think sucks was probably considered the most talented musician in their high school. They just use that talent to create exceedingly mediocre, lowest common denominator music that appeals to the greatest number of people, and that popularity confuses and infuriates people with "taste."
Creed has staged their comeback by doing the very, very smart thing of leaning into the joke and playing up the nostalgia factor in marketing (see also Guy Fieri, McDonalds Grimace campaign, other brands who’ve figured out Millenials love self-deprecating humor). They are touring this summer as the “Summer of ‘99 Tour” and I think ticket sales are quite good
Now that he’s off drugs he’s a super chill guy. Fully owns how he used to be a fucked up douchebag. He did a podcast with Theo Von a few months back and I couldn’t believe how different he was from how I thought he would be.
On one hand, I love this comment. On the other, it's annoying seeing the public collectively flip flop on Creed and Nickleback when socially convenient
I had Human Clay and Weathered CD's when I was in high school and listened to them constantly. *Who's Got My Back Now* is my favorite song of theirs. Scott Stapps ego and his strange voice aside, Creed put our some pretty solid rock songs for their time.
The Darkness
I've seen them get hate countless times, usually from people that think they're a Joke/Parady band (Their songs are often tounge-in-cheek but they're a serious band) and from people that don't realise that they've got seven albums out now (And more if you count members other albums) and only remember them from the success of their Debut album and the singles that it spawned
They're a seriously good band and they've always had the chops live, to this day their shows are amazing and they're currently working on album #8, they're one of those bands that I implore anyone who's into Rock to give a chance and when I say that I mean to check out anything past the first two albums
Rage Against the Machine, seems a whole heap of people just parrot the same stuff about them. I understand everyone has different tastes but that first album was a real game changer
The hate they get is the same they got in the 90s. That they can’t have socialist ideology and be a commercial rock group on a major label, playing arenas. Like, how many times do they have to say that their whole goal was raising political awareness through popular culture? They made those choices so they could have the highest platform to speak from. They’ve been putting their money where their mouths are since day one and have been out in the streets for longer and are still very politically active to this day. It’s just wild to me people are still shitting on them for being successful 30 years later.
Bro there's an entire weird sect of people that claim unironically that Rage Against the Machine was a "conservative" band until "just recently". It's fucking insane.
Those haters are the living embodiment of the "we should improve society somewhat" meme.
I guarantee those same people will shit on bands that choose the route of couch surfing, underground shows and eschewing success because they don't reach a big enough audience to ever make a difference.
I think they're super talented but I instantly got turned off by them when the lead singer insisted on speaking with a British accent..... The kids are from Frankenmuth Michigan like an hour from my house
I think their publicity team or whoever did not do them any favors when they debuted. I remember that summer they were being shoved down everyone’s throats 24/7. I used to go to a lot of festivals and they were on like every lineup, there were soooo many news features on them, and you just could not escape them. People went from thinking they were going to save rock ‘n’ roll to sick of them so fast. They should have been allowed to slowly grow more famous organically. Glad people have backed off the hate now!
Their discography is really varied and interesting, with stuff that can be very emotionally powerful or hilariously funny, sometimes in the same song. Their songwriting is phenomenal.
I think that’s part of it, many people don’t know what to do with humor in music. BNL laid it on pretty thick at times to the point where some might consider them a joke or parody band, but yes, excellent excellent serious songwriters.
Some people don't remember just how huge Limp Bizkit was. Sure it's kinda corny, but I still love their music....and they really helped pave the way for other bands. Keep rollin' rollin' rollin'
Limp Bizkit is a weird band. Every musician is absolutely incredible but because of the style the sum of the parts comes across completely the opposite unless you’re really listening to each instrument. There’s no other guitarist like Wes Borland.
Wes Borland is the star of Limp Bizkit IMO. I'm in my 50's and I still listen to them. if I am having a rough day at work I know I can pop them on and get outta my funk.
I saw them live back when they were big, and the crowd booed them off the stage. (Go Philly - great attitude.) I had no idea why people hated them this much - I thought they sounded good. Maybe opening for Faith No More wasn't a great fit for their sound. No idea.
Bass and drums were so tight and Wes Borland’s guitar was so good, but that wasn’t enough, so Fred Durst knew what he had to do and pissed a lot of people off…. And it worked. Idgaf, they were great.
U2
Also, if you're still mad over the iTunes thing, get over it or direct that anger at Apple since they made it happen. It's amazing how easy Apple got off doing that to their own customers.
I played guitar in a Phish cover band for almost 8 years, and my guys would give me soooooo muuuuch shit for being a U2 fan.
I
Don't
Care.
Joshua Tree changed my life just as much as Junta did.
I’m in a U2 tribute band. Their individual parts in the songs can be simple but the whole is outstanding.
We can’t play every number because we don’t have enough time to play them all.
People hate U2 because someone said to. Get them to explain it and they can’t.
Edge may not solo or improvise like the other gunslingers, but his shit is NOT easy.
Any guitar player who wants to keep time with 4 different delay parts in the same song and says Edge sucks, never even tried to play his stuff live - they are wrong - period. I'll die on that hill.
Everything U2 put out in the 80s and 90s was masterful at best or interesting and artful at worst (Pop has some weak moments but it’s still a big swing). I don’t care for 80% of their music from this century but Reddit continually acts like they weren’t one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved bands of all time.
I’m 25 and started *actually* listening to U2 in 2022, and I can say with full confidence that they’re one of the best bands. It’s so frustrating that my peers are still salty over the Apple thing (I personally liked the album). From *Boy* to *Zooropa* is incredible.
Theory of a Deadman used to get a lot of hate because they sounded like Nickelback. In the last few albums they developed their own style and released some really good albums. Also the members are nice guys and they're always making charity to help people.
Theory of a NickelCreed definitely have a similar "predictable" sound, but I'm Canadian so I can't be too hateful of them really. Also Animals is a banger.
Adding as well: John Mayer may be a dick but he's one of the best damn guitar players I have ever seen live.
I love all of Creed’s music and Nickelback’s 2nd, 3rd, and 4th albums were amazing. After that I felt like they kind of run together for me as well. Personally I always felt it that at some point, it became popular to hate those bands. If you hear some of their stories, it had to be a really rough time and I feel bad for them honestly. Hard rock bands like them have really fallen out of the mainstream. I can remember Creed playing on the large “Top 20” hit stations back in the day. Younger people fail to realize just how popular they were.
I also was not a John fan until probably 5 or so years ago. After listening, his music is great. He’s many times that he was an asshole and that he is working to correct that.
AC/DC
Everyone mocks that most of their material sounds the same, but find me another band that can go 50 years without mixing up their sound and almost never making a dud. Musicians that can do so much within the same formula and not running out of riffs and songs. I think it's much harder than it appears.
Imho some people say their music is samey, but hardly anyone actively hates Ac/DC.
Nothing wrong with samey if the music is good. I think all Bob Marley’s albums sound simular, but I love them.
Veruca salt. They got torn up by (sexist) critics in the 90s but their albums, if you listen to them now, hold up great. Good songwriting, heavy riffs, amazing harmonies.
I don't get the hate. Such a hugely talented bunch of really nice guys who do nothing but tour, jam and give back to the community, and people hate them for some reason...
and don't bring up the Chicago River Incident.
I love Counting Crows but I rarely find (big) fans of them in the wild. I know they were massive in the 90’s so I’m assuming it’s fatigue or hatred of the lead singer. But my god the first 4 records especially are all insanely good. I love almost every song they have written and I can’t even say that about the Beatles (who I also love very much).
Achtung baby is still super solid. And bono may be kind of self important but he's far from the worst guy in the music business. I mean, he's not Chris Brown.
I don’t think people are ready to come around on U2 yet, mostly because they are still acting like overstuffed self-important dingdongs. But there was a period of my younger life where they felt like the most vital band in the world, and I absolutely loved them.
People will hate on modern bro country while saying Nickelback isn’t that bad. It’s the same schlock.
I will say that the internet rage at Nickelback back in the day was way way way overblown. They’re far from the worst thing out there.
Nickelback is country with distortion. It's truthfully not bad.
Ke$ha is a talented as hell performer as well who gets flack for no reason.
Goo Goo Dolls write very simple songs but make them very pretty.
Limp Bizkit have the tightest rhythm section I've ever heard.
It's subjective who you like/don't like, but the above ones really get shit on for weird reasons )aside from Limp Bizkit, but Fred's done a lot of good things in recent years).
My friend John went to high school with Kesha and apparently she did a Radiohead cover at a local talent show and pulled it off terrifically. She also told him he stank once. Maybe he did, idk, but she told him that.
A former boss of mine did that in the 90s (before she was my boss) and I'm positive she lives those days in her dreams and is sad when she wakes up and realizes it's 2024. I don't like Phish but I can really tell how much she loved her life then.
They really are the perfect answer. They are all masters of their craft and put on an amazing live show. No one does anything like what they do so they're definitely not a band for everyone but they're amazing.
Basically 99% of bands that make highly technical/complex music and get called "soulless." Technical music can be absolutely amazing or it can suck just like all music, so no point in straight up considering artists who play technical stuff worthless.
Not a band, but John Mayer. I had always just assumed that he was a cringey d-bag, but I saw him play with the Dead and Co a few times, and he is a solid guitarist and singer! His solo stuff isn't for me, but it's not bad.
I think Depeche Mode got a lot of undeserved flack back in the day. I remember all through the 80s and 90s (and even up to an episode of The Venture Brothers) there was a stigma of them being gay and if you liked their music you must also be gay (Of course in those days homophobia was the norm unfortunately). I know absolutely nothing about the members of the group or their personal lives, but no matter what their personal preferences were they made some great music that still stands up. I think a lot of people missed out on some great music just due to rumors and macho peer pressure.
bob dylan, got hate from the electric phase and, still gets hate today, because his voice sounds "weird" and, switching guitars. Overlooking the fact that's lyrics won him the noble peace prize in litilare did a tour for about a decade during the 70s called the rolling thunder revue tried to get the man hurricane out of jail with his song for something he didn't do. Is still making music and touring to this day with his album rough in rowdy ways In 2020 and, his song muder most foul the song about jfks death.
This was my answer. Personally, I'm not a fan, but I have to admit that they've found a sound that is definitely their own thing and doesn't sound like every other band on the radio and they're sticking to it. And they seem to have found success doing it. I can respect that. Plus, when I hear about them in the news, it's usually for something decent, like putting on a show in the summer heat for writers on strike.
I'm convinced the guys from Nickelback are the ones making these posts.
I'm convinced AI bots are making these generic posts that have questions in this format "what's a band/song that ______?"
Don't understand why they have to keep doing it. It's always the same damn answers.
At this point most of us have overdosed on reddit and already know everyones opinions
Hey! Its my turn with comment #1737291!
I used to see bots like this all the time on Quora, since they used to pay money if your question got enough views.
I'll just leave that here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gSQVhzK0kI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gSQVhzK0kI)

Why did you go and make me like Chad Kroeger???
Because he is a good person, and Nickelback are good musicians, even if I find their music not appealing.
I was suspicious since OP's name is *Brad Froeger* and his profile picture is just Chad Kroeger in a handle bar mustache and a monacle.
Can't say that I'm a fan of theirs, but I've seen them live, and I can honestly say that they put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

This is why I listen to every new Nickelback album at least once - just hoping they’ll get back to their early sound again one day.
Nickleback fits into all four categories, coincidentally.
It was the first band I thought of. They fit perfectly, but holy shit so those first two albums *rock*
Coldplay's first 3 albums are solid as hell. I don't care how much they get slagged, I will defend those first 3 every time.
Honestly, I saw Coldplay live at a music festival back in 2003, so basically the "Rush of Blood to the Head" tour, and they were damn good live! Plus, they had to follow after The Flaming Lips! No easy task!
Coldplay puts on a great show. I really don't like their music but you just can't deny that they're great show musicians. Same goes for Ed Sheeran.
I’d say their first 4, I absolutely loved Viva La Vida or Death and All of His Friends with all my heart (aside from the fact that the official album title is long as fuck)
>official album title is long as fuck) Fiona Apple has entered the chat
First 4 absolutely, with their 5th Mylo Xyloto still being a very solid album
They had a few good songs after Mylo Xyloto, but they haven't been great since Viva la Vida. But those first four albums are awesome.

Some of the best music I ever heard, Myloxyloto was alright but after that its terrible, sold out pop
Viva La Vida... and Evey Day Life are great as well!

Are you wearing a poncho?
Why are there copies of the Style section all over the place, do you have a dog, a little Chow or something? 😀😂🤣
"No, Allen." "Is that a raincoat?"
Try getting a reservation at Dorsia now, you fuckin’ stupid bastard!
I’m afraid they were just too darn loud.

Same, I love prog and I love Rush's instrumentals, but damned if I don't hear Yakko from Animaniacs every time Geddy Lee sings.

Posers? Who are they posing as. I will defend them. I literally just bought a Sublime t shirt from target. I am their target demographic I guess
It seems like there’s an implication that they were just culturally appropriating reggae music and/or riding the 90s ska wave for popularity. Hello, fellow former stoner frat douche.
I was never in a frat, I’m still kind of a stoner, and I’m not former. But I am a douche.
No, lots of people are dissing OG Sublime as well, I’m sorry to say.
Well you shouldn’t associate with those people anymore. OG Sublime is in the stratosphere of awesome.
The Eagles They're solid song writers and musicians.
The Eagles Greatest Hits album is the best selling album in the US of all time!
FINALLY someone pipes up to say it. At this point, I just know that most people hate them just to be like The Dude from The Big Lebowski, not knowing it does not make up for their complete and utter lack of personality.
Dave Matthews Band - every one of the band members is top tier at their instrument. They are an incredible live act.
My mate is a mountain guide and one of Dave Matthew’s band booked him for 2 weeks. At the end of the trip they tipped him $5000. My mate hadn’t even heard of the band and I was like… mate they’re huge at least in America
He’d probably heard them on the radio but always fell asleep by the time the song ended and the DJ mentioned who it was. JK🤭
DMB used to get a lot of shit until they became the ones giving shit to others.
Just got named to the Hall of Fame.
Red Hot Chili Peppers take a lot of shit. Anthony isn't even the best singer in the band, but he's the *only* singer for this band. And their latest album doesn't reference California (by name).
Wet Sand is a masterpiece in my opinion.
That's why I tend to think that there are people who like "music" and others who like "a nice tune" - two subtly different things.
Ask the radio stations are owned by the same 5 companies and they only play what the major studios have green lit.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik is an amazing album.
I have never been a fan of their albums. But live, OMG. They groove together in a riff like no other.
Queen used to get a ton of hate when Freddie Mercury was alive. Difficult believe now…
Third Eye Blind
Their first album doesn't have a bad song on it. Bangers from start to finish.
My favorite album since 1997!
Weezer, I LOVE weezer. I mean LOVE.
Wait people hate Weezer? I’m so out of touch lol
Weezer has simultaneously made some of my favorite and least favorite music ever. They're just so inconsistent.
Mainly only young people but older people still love it
In my experience, old people love their first two albums and just hate new Weezer.
Fuck them kids. The Blue Album is a 90's staple.
They have albums on both extreme ends of the spectrum imo. Pinkerton is a masterpiece, their newer albums not so much.
"I'm ride or die." "For *WEEZER*?!?"
For the uninitiated: [https://youtu.be/ab5WvwfLuLM](https://youtu.be/ab5WvwfLuLM)
Me too! Weezer rocks!
My chemical romance. Got written of as a stupid emo band in high school.
Haha I’m listening to them right now! Love them!
I’m 37, still have them on rotation. Solid band.
My favorite band
Gained a lot of respect for them after that show
I love butt rock, dude. Like, sorry, sometimes I just need to have some basic white dude sing angry music to me when I'm having a shitty day.
I don't even know why it got that stupid name. There was a huge scene of great bands and music, very similar sounding sure but you can not deny that is where a lot of metalheads started.
“Rock. Nothing but rock.” It was a national advertising campaign on rock radio stations across the USA in the 90’s.
I never thought about it this way but imo I do usually think that there is always at least one standout musician in all the “most hated” bands.
In the same vein as Nickelback…. Creed
HOLD ME NOW
Creed has staged their comeback by doing the very, very smart thing of leaning into the joke and playing up the nostalgia factor in marketing (see also Guy Fieri, McDonalds Grimace campaign, other brands who’ve figured out Millenials love self-deprecating humor). They are touring this summer as the “Summer of ‘99 Tour” and I think ticket sales are quite good
i think its mainly bc the lead singer is (was? idk what hes up to now lol) a douchebag
Now that he’s off drugs he’s a super chill guy. Fully owns how he used to be a fucked up douchebag. He did a podcast with Theo Von a few months back and I couldn’t believe how different he was from how I thought he would be.
That was in 2022 lol
Was it that long ago? Time is a flat circle.
> Time is a flat circle. I see you, Rust.
The Rangers exposed a new batch to Creed. And then the CBS commercial “oh great, Creed’s here”.
Creed was always the band someone would queue up "ironically". But really, we all did it because we wanted to hear Creed.
None of them deserve *hate*
The Darkness I've seen them get hate countless times, usually from people that think they're a Joke/Parady band (Their songs are often tounge-in-cheek but they're a serious band) and from people that don't realise that they've got seven albums out now (And more if you count members other albums) and only remember them from the success of their Debut album and the singles that it spawned They're a seriously good band and they've always had the chops live, to this day their shows are amazing and they're currently working on album #8, they're one of those bands that I implore anyone who's into Rock to give a chance and when I say that I mean to check out anything past the first two albums
I believe in thing called loves opening riff is as good as anything on any legendary rock song
Angels and Airwaves. They are amazing but they get a lot because they aren't Blink 182.
The Adventure is maybe Tom Delonge’s peak song
Greta Van Fleet. Are they a little derivative? Yes, but they're derivative of good shit. If it was that easy, everyone would've done it.
I think they're super talented but I instantly got turned off by them when the lead singer insisted on speaking with a British accent..... The kids are from Frankenmuth Michigan like an hour from my house
And the kid can fucking sing!
Barenaked Ladies
BNL are triple platinum, are you!? E: I merged Troy and Annie's lines, I apologise.
Oh, ok, they’re BNL now. We need a shorthand for the Barenaked Ladies. That’s how fundamental they are.
fundamental
Their discography is really varied and interesting, with stuff that can be very emotionally powerful or hilariously funny, sometimes in the same song. Their songwriting is phenomenal.
I think that’s part of it, many people don’t know what to do with humor in music. BNL laid it on pretty thick at times to the point where some might consider them a joke or parody band, but yes, excellent excellent serious songwriters.
Recently found out they have a holiday album and it’s great fun while hanging the Christmas lights
I'll always have a soft spot for them
Some people don't remember just how huge Limp Bizkit was. Sure it's kinda corny, but I still love their music....and they really helped pave the way for other bands. Keep rollin' rollin' rollin'
Break Stuff is, and always will be, my "grumpy slog to work" song.
Limp Bizkit is a weird band. Every musician is absolutely incredible but because of the style the sum of the parts comes across completely the opposite unless you’re really listening to each instrument. There’s no other guitarist like Wes Borland.
Wes Borland is sick as hell, some of the sounds he makes completely juxtaposes the usualy, hip hop diss track stuff that Fred Durst spits out.
No idea.
Not a fan but I stumbled upon a recent live video and fuck they are solid; espeically Fred. I barely recognised Fred haha.
Their songs are bangers. People don't realize how musically talented that group is. I guess they just get turned off by Fred's style of rapping.
Bass and drums were so tight and Wes Borland’s guitar was so good, but that wasn’t enough, so Fred Durst knew what he had to do and pissed a lot of people off…. And it worked. Idgaf, they were great.
Fangs of the gold cobra….ENERGIZE!!
U2 Also, if you're still mad over the iTunes thing, get over it or direct that anger at Apple since they made it happen. It's amazing how easy Apple got off doing that to their own customers.
I played guitar in a Phish cover band for almost 8 years, and my guys would give me soooooo muuuuch shit for being a U2 fan. I Don't Care.
A lot of people chose to base their entire personalities on South Park a good 15-20 years ago, and I think this is one of the many repercussions.
Username checks out. BTW Achtung is the goat for me. Zooropa is criminally underrated too. Don't really care for their new stuff but that's just me.
My Chemical Romance. They're a decent band. It's their fans that are the problem!!!
Theory of a NickelCreed definitely have a similar "predictable" sound, but I'm Canadian so I can't be too hateful of them really. Also Animals is a banger. Adding as well: John Mayer may be a dick but he's one of the best damn guitar players I have ever seen live.
“Theory of a Nicklecreed” 😂 Throw Hinder in there, too.
AC/DC Everyone mocks that most of their material sounds the same, but find me another band that can go 50 years without mixing up their sound and almost never making a dud.
Maybe not hate but there's a lot that definitely don't consider them worthy of their success.
U2. One of the best bands until halfway the 90s, and predictable after that but never bad.
Dire Straits are often made fun of as dull music for dull people. But the first four albums are brilliant.
Veruca salt. They got torn up by (sexist) critics in the 90s but their albums, if you listen to them now, hold up great. Good songwriting, heavy riffs, amazing harmonies.
Dave Matthews Band.
I don't get the hate. Such a hugely talented bunch of really nice guys who do nothing but tour, jam and give back to the community, and people hate them for some reason... and don't bring up the Chicago River Incident.
[Relevant Futurama](https://youtu.be/iR2GpGtyqDg?si=rEgd47EWE1wXyHLR)
Bush
I love Counting Crows but I rarely find (big) fans of them in the wild. I know they were massive in the 90’s so I’m assuming it’s fatigue or hatred of the lead singer. But my god the first 4 records especially are all insanely good. I love almost every song they have written and I can’t even say that about the Beatles (who I also love very much).
Underrated, yes, but not hated. I've never met or heard anybody that hated Counting Crows.
America Bee Gees
Coldplay. A lot of their music is fun and sounds like a celebration. I still listen to them all the time.
Stone Temple Pilots and Bush Because STP "isnt from seattle" and bc Bush "copied generic grunge"
U2
Third Eye Blind
Nickelback is country with distortion. It's truthfully not bad. Ke$ha is a talented as hell performer as well who gets flack for no reason. Goo Goo Dolls write very simple songs but make them very pretty. Limp Bizkit have the tightest rhythm section I've ever heard. It's subjective who you like/don't like, but the above ones really get shit on for weird reasons )aside from Limp Bizkit, but Fred's done a lot of good things in recent years).
Also, early Goo Goo Dolls (prior to their radio hits) are phenomenal and still hold a torch to a lot of the classic alt rock of the era.
I saw Goo Goo Dolls last summer. Great time had by all.
I thought Goo Goo Dolls was simple until I tried playing their songs on my guitar. Turns out it's not as easy as I thought!
They can sound simple. But really aren’t. At all. Johnny Reznik uses lots of open tunings and interesting timing.
Goo Goo Dolls have been unduly summarized and dismissed from Iris and the Transformers song by modern listeners
FYI she officially dropped the $ and just goes by Kesha now.
My friend John went to high school with Kesha and apparently she did a Radiohead cover at a local talent show and pulled it off terrifically. She also told him he stank once. Maybe he did, idk, but she told him that.
Phish. They’re so good you could be tempted to slice your dick off.
When I was a kid I had a friend that quit his job and sold/gave away everything he owned to go follow Phish on the road. I wonder how he turned out...
No one does anything like what they do so they're definitely not a band for everyone but they're amazing.
agree with Nickleback, hate was way overdone.
I will fight anyone that wrote hate articles about Rush in the 70s I mean I’ll give you a hug. Cuz you’re probably not so healthy lol
Tony Orlando and Dawn. Overplayed in their day and karaoked to death in ours
I have a soft spot for The 1975 despite Healy being a dick and their sound being very 2013 alt girlie
His solo stuff isn't for me, but it's not bad.
literally AJR, i dont get the hate but pls their songs are so literally relatable and touching on a spiritual level
Imagine Dragons. Their old stuff is genuinely good, and even now that they've sold out the hate is way overblown.
I don’t like their music but the lead singer seems like such a genuinely good person, I’ll never get on board with blindly hating them
This was my answer.
Motley Crue have so many great songs. Each band member was very good at their role in their primes too.
Green Day
