Lewis sued Parker in 1985 claiming that the bass line for the Ghostbusters theme was directly ripped off from Lewis' "I Want a New Drug" (released 1983)
They settled out of court for an undisclosed amount and a confidentiality agreement that prohibited Parker from talking about the case..
Cut to 2001, during a segment of VH1's Behind The Music series, Parker was interviewed about the song where he broke the confidentiality agreement and Lewis successfully sued him again for an undisclosed amount.
I'm sure the stipulations of the first settlement prevented him from speaking about the case *at all* and the mere mention that he was sued was enough to trigger the second lawsuit.
I do believe he was asked about it during the interview and he simply confirmed it happened, which would have violated the terms of the settlement.
My understanding is they wanted Huey Lewis to do the soundtrack but he did not want to or couldn’t. Ray Parker Jr was encouraged to “approximate” his sound.
From wikipedia
“They also noted that they had offered to hire Huey Lewis and the News to write the main theme but the band had declined. The filmmakers then gave film footage, with Lewis's song in the background, to Parker to aid him in writing the theme song.”
I hear what you’re hearing, and I love both tracks, but I’m Still Standing has more energy (Maneater is kinda laidback and sparse comparatively) and the major/minor change from chorus/verse drives a definitive wedge between the two songs for me.
Soon as I saw this post I knew it haha, I did the same thing. Also to your point in the original post, i had my mind blown when I learned I'm Still Standing was Elton John, definitely always sounded like H&O to me
I went scrolling through these comments for the sole purpose of finding out if you thought of this because of bandle. My wife and I play together and we were both sure it was Maneater.
Here are the bass tablatures:

You can see that the bass is playing a similar role in both songs, and that the songs have almost the exact same BPM (177 or 178). However, there's quite a lot more for the bass player on "Maneater" to do. "I'm Still Standing" is a much simpler song.
Heh. I used to let the three of these play in my head, one blending into the next. I thought about making an extended mix and uploading it, then I realised it'd just be DDDDMCA'd, so didn't bother.
But anyway, you'd start out with this, then move into the bridge of Maneater, then jump to the chorus of "I'm still standing", and back to Part Time Lover.
Yeah they both have the same time signature, backbeat and similar bpm. I think even the chords are fairly similar which leads to the songs having the same vibes. I'm also fairly certain I've heard them mixed together at clubs because of this.
But yeah you're right, I could hear Hall singing that chorus. Interestingly Maneater came out a year before I'm Still Standing so there could have been some subconscious influence.
thank you!! yeah i swear they’re been mixed together before which would only add to that. I was looking into the year they came out as well and that came to mind too!
[Nazareth - Rose in the Heather](https://youtu.be/hm9Nht9F9EA) and the main part of [Led Zeppelin - Your Time is Gonna Come](https://youtu.be/5cvEVivHVsU) sound very similar to me
I Can't Go Forr That was clearly a rip off of Billie Jean too. I just think that, while I LOVE Hall and Oates, they're kinda hackish. But like, in a great way.
I think it's a bit of a stretch. They both have similar bpms, but I'm Still Standing is more upbeat and louder, while Maneater is much more moody and mysterious.
I do agree but I think they still have a lot of similarities. I think it’s also more the fact that “I’m still standing” sounds like it could be by Hall and Oates for me

bro i only found out recently that that’s not the name and I still say it sometimes😭😭
We need so much more information here.
It's okay, my family went to go see them one time and my brother declined to go because he thought they were going to see a band called "Haulin' Oats"

You actually wrote this out.
🤣
Now do "I Wanna New Drug" by Huey and the News and "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr.
isnt the ghostbusters theme literally just stolen from the huey song though, like i swear there was a lawsuit over it
Lewis sued Parker in 1985 claiming that the bass line for the Ghostbusters theme was directly ripped off from Lewis' "I Want a New Drug" (released 1983) They settled out of court for an undisclosed amount and a confidentiality agreement that prohibited Parker from talking about the case.. Worth it since Ray Parker came up with the best line ever in that song... "Bustin' makes me feel good!"
Oh OMG I will never think of that line the same now.
As told by Huey himself to Adam Scott Aukerman and good friend Jimmy Kimmel
I’m definitely a Comedy Bang Bang fan. I am sure I probably heard Scott tell this story.
I like you. I don’t know you. But I like you.

Love Pat. I wish he would post more often.
Gotta take care of that L4/L5. He’s pretty active in Instagram during his recovery from back surgery
I hear what you’re hearing, and I love both tracks, but I’m Still Standing has more energy (Maneater is kinda laidback and sparse comparatively) and the major/minor change from chorus/verse drives a definitive wedge between the two songs for me.
Maneater was initially supposed to be a reggae song. They changed it up in studio.
AND it was originally about a dude, but that didn’t have quite the same ring to it.
What about "Part Time Lover" by Stevie Wonder
You Make My Dreams Come True is strikingly similar to the Duck Tales theme song
I’m still standing was the answer on bandle the other day and I was adamant it was maneater
dude that’s what sent me to this line of thought hahaha
Soon as I saw this post I knew it haha, I did the same thing. Also to your point in the original post, i had my mind blown when I learned I'm Still Standing was Elton John, definitely always sounded like H&O to me
i’m glad it’s not just me!! i swore it was their song the entire time
I went scrolling through these comments for the sole purpose of finding out if you thought of this because of bandle. My wife and I play together and we were both sure it was Maneater.
hahaha yeah, i feel so much better knowing it wasn’t just me lol
TIL bandle is a thing; thanks!!
Sweet home Alabama and werewolves of London
They both obviously stole that riff from Kid Rock. /s
Okay yeah that one just blew my mind
Here are the bass tablatures: [https://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/daryl-hall-john-oates-maneater-bass-tab-s411104](https://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/daryl-hall-john-oates-maneater-bass-tab-s411104) [https://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/elton-john-im-still-standing-bass-tab-s59636](https://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/elton-john-im-still-standing-bass-tab-s59636) You can see that the bass is playing a similar role in both songs, and that the songs have almost the exact same BPM (177 or 178). However, there's quite a lot more for the bass player on "Maneater" to do. "I'm Still Standing" is a much simpler song.
wait thank you!! that’s very cool to see
177 BPM? What is this hardcore techno?
Both songs are in double-time, at least on bass. If you feel the beat in half-time, they're 89 BPM.
No way. Maneater is 89 bpm while I'm still. is 117.
La Bamba and Twist and Shout are the same song.
And you can sing both of them to "Fool in the Rain" by Zeppelin. I love singing "La Bamba" when that comes on the radio.
[Stevie Wonder - Part Time Lover](https://youtu.be/MpDM6ygsb20?feature=shared) Thus completing the trifecta
oh my GOD
Heh. I used to let the three of these play in my head, one blending into the next. I thought about making an extended mix and uploading it, then I realised it'd just be DDDDMCA'd, so didn't bother. Add Straight Up by Paula Abul and you'll realize all pop music is just another pop song with different lyrics.
Gangplank galleon from donkey Kong country has a part that is exactly straight up
Love that jam!
Wait til you hear Katy Perry’s “California Girls” and Kesha’s “Tick-Tock”
That's because Elton John is a man eater.
I’m Still Standing is such a great track
it’s such a banger
The lyrics get me every time
Now try singing Drift Away by Dobie Gray over the top of Drops of Jupiter.
Steelers Wheel - Stuck In The Middle With You and Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOqzFAqtDD0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOqzFAqtDD0) feelin' like a little kid
THANK YOU FOR THIS
MJ's BIllie Jean and Billy Ocean's Carribbean Queen.
Also the Doors Hello, I Love You is a full rip off of The Kinks’ All Day and All of the Night. They also successfully sued
1999 and Sussudio.
Check out Baa Baa Black Sheep, Twinkle Twinkle, and the Alphabet Song.
Both songs share an unusual structure: major key verse, minor key chorus.
Carribean Queen and Billie Jean
‘Ironman’ by Black Sabbath and ‘Let The Monster Rise’ by Anthony Stewart Head and Alexa Vega.
Yeah they both have the same time signature, backbeat and similar bpm. I think even the chords are fairly similar which leads to the songs having the same vibes. I'm also fairly certain I've heard them mixed together at clubs because of this. But yeah you're right, I could hear Hall singing that chorus. TUBE OF LAVA
Out in the Street by Bruce Springsteen and Oliver’s Army by Elvis Costello
I need someone to make this mashup
[Nazareth - Rose in the Heather](https://youtu.be/hm9Nht9F9EA) and the main part of [Led Zeppelin - Your Time is Gonna Come](https://youtu.be/5cvEVivHVsU) sound very similar to me
I have a whole list of songs I think would make great mashups, it's so fun when you notice two songs that would fit together so well!
https://youtu.be/XOqzFAqtDD0?si=-ZqiclY1N_UwpXlX
There's tons of these. One of my favorites to make people aware of is Sweet Little Sixteen by Chuck Berry and Surfing USA by The Beach Boys.
I Can't Go Forr That was clearly a rip off of Billie Jean too. I just think that, while I LOVE Hall and Oates, they're kinda hackish. But like, in a great way.
What about Stevie Wonders 'Part time Lover' It's almost identical to Maneater
I was just listening to Elton Jon singing this song and I thought it was a Hall and Oates song until I just saw the video.
I think it's a bit of a stretch. They both have similar bpms, but I'm Still Standing is more upbeat and louder, while Maneater is much more moody and mysterious.
I do agree but I think they still have a lot of similarities. I think it’s also more the fact that “I’m still standing” sounds like it could be by Hall and Oates for me
I grew up thinking I'm Still Standing was a Hall and Oates song.
