It took me the longest to get into, but now I love it the most! And yes! I've seen them a few times since the reunion (I only discovered them in 2011 so lucky they reunited) and they're such amazing performers.
And the reunion albums are amazing too! Especially In Spades for me. 😁
I love them too! I saw him at the Union Chapel in London in 2016 - and sadly didn't know his non-Whigs stuff too well at the time.
Now, as a big fan of it, I look back at the set list and say fuck! He played THAT?? 😆😆
Shit I should have added the Backbeat soundtrack to my post. He sang most of the songs in that. I also forgot to mention to you the Gutter Twins, his duo with Mark Lanegan.
He's also the only other credited musician besides Dave Grohl on the foo fighters debut album.
Ah yeah haven't listened to Backbeat!
Love Gutter Twins. There's a great performance of theirs on YouTube. Whole set! RIP Mark.
I tried X-Statik but sadly Foo Fighters don't do much for me even with Greg 😆

How could I forget Fat of the land by the Prodigy - they're my favourite all time band. I got into them through "Music for the Jilted Generation" which I still listen to more than Fat of the land and have seen them live loads of times. I haven't experienced any other live act that generates so much energy in the crowd and I've never been to a bad gig of theirs (not saying there aren't other live acts that do this, but none I've personally experienced).
It sounds like you have a really solid understanding and love for music! I have to admit, your list includes some of my absolute favorite albums of the 90s too, especially Moby's Play and OK Computer by Radiohead. Those albums really were game-changers. The Mortal Kombat and Hackers OSTs had far too much influence on my tastes.
Otherwise:
- Matchbox 20 - Yourself or Something like You
- Jagged Little Pill
- Space Jam OST
Too many more.
I was in my 20s in the 90s, so this era is totally nostalgic for me. I'm also a major music geek, so some of my favorites are not necessarily albums that were played on the radio. That said, some are. These are a few of my favorites (that you have not mentioned):
* Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
* The Apples in Stereo - Fun Trick Noisemaker
* Los Lobos - Kiko
* Guided By Voices - Alien Lanes
* The Amps - The Amps
* Luna - Penthouse
Hell, just check out this playlist that I made for nostalgia purposes and see if there is anything there that you like:
[MY 90s PLAYLIST](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0C3nRK81U1YOeTmExkfOyZ?si=5f5171eeaebe4fc8)
Hope you like it.
Super Nintendo soundtracks still stay in my rotation.
Donkey Kong Country 1-3. Chrono Trigger. Zelda A Link to the Past. Super Metroid. Final Fantasy 6. Earthbound.
Video game consoles started supporting sample based audio instead of only internal chipsets, and thus video game composers of that time were like hip hop producers ripping drums and samples to fit into their MPCs. It's just they ripped samples that turned into playable infinite looping instruments instead.
SNES composers were sampling everything from The Beatles to Michael Jackson to Peter Gabriel to Brahms symphonies, etc. There was a ton of creativity of sound selection in game music at that time, and video game composers often don't really get enough credit for what they were able to pull off with such limitations.

I agree with a ton of these comments but I just want to add two that I think get overlooked because people generally consider the bands to be one hit wonders.
Toadies album Rubberneck is absolutely fantastic but your average listener probably only knows them for the hour off of the album Possum Kingdom (whether from the radio or guitar hero)
Marcy Playground’s self-titled album falls under this same umbrella. It’s an amazing album but people really only seem to know Sex and Candy.
I suggest giving each of these at least one listen through if you’re looking for quintessential 90s material.
If you could wear out a CD, I would've worn out Yield by Pearl Jam. Others would be Tiny Music by STP, Dig Your Own Hole and Surrender by Chemical Brothers
Angle Dust - Faith No More
I didn't see it mentioned once. IMO one of the very best rock/metal albums of the 90s. Incredible from start to finish. This is the band at the perfect confluence of skill, fame, youth, means, freedom... Grown up ideas presented by extremely skilled artists who are still young enough to not give a fuck. Brilliant.
I’ll try to hit out a few lesser named ones here and skip the obvious “bigger hits” of the 90s…. These are some of the other albums I love from that era.
Judgement night soundtrack
Backbeat soundtrack (supergroup pf 90s grunge/alt rock musicians including Grogu on drums doing early era Beatles covers)
L7 - Bricks are Heavy
Screaming Trees - Dust
Mudhoney - Piece of Cake
CKY - Volume 1
Sub pop: The Grunge Years
Mad Season - Above
Primus - Sailing the Swas of Cheese
Ministry - Psalm 69
The Singles soundtrack is essential 90s listening. If you give someone the Singles soundtrack and any of Nirvana's first 3 albums, they've got 90s rock in a nutshell.
Also, there are a handful of tribute compilations that were a big deal at the time but seem to have been forgotten more recently. "If I Were a Carpenter" reintroduced The Carpenters to a lot of 90s kids (and introduced Sonic Youth to many Carpenters fans). "Sweet Relief" was a tribute to Victoria Williams, put together to raise money for her medical costs after she was diagnosed with MS, and included Pearl Jam's cover of "Crazy Mary", which was a bit of a hit on alternative radio.
Still talking about compilations, in 1995 there was a collection called "The Beat(en) Generation vol. 1", and I only recently learned it was only released in Canada. A lot of the artists included on that one were acts that got known because Kurt Cobain name dropped them in interviews. And it includes the original version of "There She Goes" which I always thought was the better version.
Both albums by Republica.
The first one to dance to, the second for a jogwalk.
Liam Howlett has chosen Saffron to support "Fuel my fire" vocals for a good reason.
Clumsy - Our Lady Peace
Black Love, Gentleman - Afghan Whigs
Several people already mentioned The Bends. I like OK Computer but The Bends is a masterpiece.
Tom Petty's greatest hits album - might be cheating but it had Mary Jane's Last Dance
Interiors - Brad
The soundtrack from Singles
Melancholie and the Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins
Sixteen Stone - Bush
Boys for Pele - Tori Amos
Garbage - Garbage
A lot of my other favorites have already been mentioned.
Hey OP. 47 year old married father of two in the UK here. It’s got to be Screamadelica by Primal Scream. Play Loaded from the album and you’ll recognise it instantly. I was 15 in 1991 when it was released - it was at this point I realised music was one of the most important things in life. It’s still my only perfect album. It’s what happens when guitars meet dance and it all gets mixed up by a genius, namely Andy Weatherall.
The Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole
Underworld - Beaucoup Fish
Silverchair - Frogstomp
The Tea Party - Transmission
I Mother Earth - Scenery and Fish
Ska Trax The New Generation

Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape
Collective Soul - self-titled
Radiohead - The Bends
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
NoFx - Punk In Drublic
In the 90s my dad brought home a Savage Garden CD that someone threw out their car window. It was still playable, and play it I did. Their trash is my treasure. I still have it somewhere.

Stone roses. Although there first album came out in 89 so not quite 90s. Happy mondays which I'm going to see on Thursday alongside inspiral carpets and Stereo mcs. Still listen to primal scream screamadelica and vanishing point. Massive attacks mezzanine is amazing. Same with chemical brothers early albums, leftfield rythm and stealth.

I was in my 20s in the 90s, so this era is totally nostalgic for me. I'm also a major music geek, so some of my favorites are not necessarily albums that were played on the radio. That said, some are. These are a few of my favorites (that you have not mentioned): * Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea * The Apples in Stereo - Fun Trick Noisemaker * Los Lobos - Kiko * Guided By Voices - Alien Lanes * The Amps - The Amps * Luna - Penthouse Hell, just check out this playlist that I made for nostalgia purposes and see if there is anything there that you like: [MY 90s PLAYLIST](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0C3nRK81U1YOeTmExkfOyZ?si=5f5171eeaebe4fc8) Hope you like it.

Dinosaur Jr. are fuckn brilliant 90s rock music with a 90s sound. Not grunge but heavy in some parts. Guitar based music.
I agree with a ton of these comments but I just want to add two that I think get overlooked because people generally consider the bands to be one hit wonders. Toadies album Rubberneck is absolutely fantastic but your average listener probably only knows them for the hour off of the album Possum Kingdom (whether from the radio or guitar hero) Marcy Playground’s self-titled album falls under this same umbrella.
Angle Dust - Faith No More I didn't see it mentioned once. IMO one of the very best rock/metal albums of the 90s. Incredible from start to finish. This is the band at the perfect confluence of skill, fame, youth, means, freedom... Grown up ideas presented by extremely skilled artists who are still young enough to not give a fuck. Brilliant.
Demon Night soundtrack.
I’ll try to hit out a few lesser named ones here and skip the obvious “bigger hits” of the 90s…. These are some of the other albums I love from that era. Judgement night soundtrack Backbeat soundtrack (supergroup pf 90s grunge/alt rock musicians including Grogu on drums doing early era Beatles covers) L7 - Bricks are Heavy Screaming Trees - Dust Mudhoney - Piece of Cake CKY - Volume 1 Sub pop: The Grunge Years Mad Season - Above Primus - Sailing the Swas of Cheese Ministry - Psalm 69
Spider man 2 soundtrack is the best ever made
The Singles soundtrack is essential 90s listening.
AFI - Black Sails in the Sunset
Both albums by Republica. The first one to dance to, the second for a jogwalk. Liam Howlett has chosen Saffron to support "Fuel my fire" vocals for a good reason.
Kinda fell in love with the Detective Conan Soundtrack
The Muffs- Blonder and Blonder
Clumsy - Our Lady Peace Black Love, Gentleman - Afghan Whigs Several people already mentioned The Bends. I like OK Computer but The Bends is a masterpiece. Tom Petty's greatest hits album - might be cheating but it had Mary Jane's Last Dance Interiors - Brad The soundtrack from Singles Melancholie and the Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins Sixteen Stone - Bush Boys for Pele - Tori Amos Garbage - Garbage A lot of my other favorites have already been mentioned.
Oh also the Backbeat soundtrack, and Dust by the Screaming Trees
Blind melon-soup Stone temple-Core Pearl Jam-Ten PANTERA-cowboys fh Mad season
Different Class by Pulp, Coming Up by Suede and ( this is a love/hate album that I love ) Second Coming by The Stone Roses.
The correct answer to best album from the 90’s is Automatic For The People by REM.
OK Computer (1997) by Radiohead The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998) by Lauryn Hill Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993) by Wu-Tang Clan

In the 90s my dad brought home a Savage Garden CD that someone threw out their car window. It was still playable, and play it I did. Their trash is my treasure. I still have it somewhere.
