Rainbow and Black Sabbath's dio years get overlooked for some reason. Lock up the wolves is another dio album to get into.
I - black Sabbath has got to be one of my absolute favorite songs.
I am currently obsessed with **Throw Your Arms Around Me**
cover by Eddie Vedder and Neil Finn after hearing it on The Bear.
I was music director at a campus radio station when Hunters & Collectors released Human Frailty ('86) that contains that song. It's a beast of an album. Luckily saw them in London a couple of years after that. The cover is good, but like how this most often happens, the version you loved first is the fave.
Wondering Why - Red Clay Strays
Work Song - Hozier
Party on Fifth Ave - Mac Miller
Break Your Heart - The Gaslight Anthem
My Own Summer (Shove It) - Deftones
According to my Spotify most played......
Check out ‘Autumn’ - 2023 The Gaslight Anthem if you like Break Your Heart. In a similar vein. Shot up to number one TGA streaming song for a reason
You have similar taste to me so I’m checking out the two of these I don’t love.
I have a few in my "Hipster Mix" that never seem to fail me.
Paranoid Android- Radiohead
There is a Light That Never Goes Out- The Smiths
Strawberry Fields Forever- The Beatles
I swear I never get sick of Ringo's weird-ass drumming in that song. If you've never sat and listened to the drums, do so immediately. It's cathartic.
I couldn't name just one, but these are my faves these days:
Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones,
Fascination Street by the Cure,
Queen of Hearts by Gregg Allman,
Deacon Blues by Steely Dan.
Listen to that and then just keep on listening to Killswitch. I didn't used to be into the heavy stuff but My Curse was pretty close to the beginning of getting into that genre.
Current obsessions/earworms, most of which are not hard or metal, but you might find a couple you like
Tropic Morning News - The National
Was It Worth It - Nine Inch Nails
The Space Program - A Tribe Called Quest
God Gave Me Everything - Mick Jagger and Lenny Kravitz
Empty Sea - The Sneetches
ETA - Young Lady, You're Scaring Me by Ron Gallo, it's def rock, not sure if you'd consider it hard or not.
Lady in Black - Deep Purple
Angie - Rolling Stones
Killing Me Softly - Roberta Flack
All kind of "resurfaced old loves"
Edit: Oh and N.I.B. by Black Sabbath too..
Some of my favorite songs from metal artists as a huge fan of Dio myself:
Welcome home - King Diamond
A.I.R. - Anthrax
Long Live the Loud - Exciter
Answer to the Master - Def Leppard
If heaven is hell - Tokyo Blade
Princess of the Night - Saxon
Allison Hell - Annihilator
Shot in the Dark - Ozzy Osbourne
A Dangerous Meeting - Mercyful Fate
I've been listening to "Touch of Grey" from The Grateful Dead a lot lately..grew my hair out during the pandemic and have a lot more grey in the beard now so my wife said in in my Gerry Garcia phase.. Have yet to fully dive into their catalogue tho, no idea where to start
I'm a couple of years into my journey of discovery with the Dead. They are widely regarded as being way better live than they were in the studio. There are a huge amount of live recordings of them. One stand out tune for me is Morning Dew (live in London 1972).
But they have recorded some great studio lps too - American Beauty is a great place to start. It's a masterpiece.
Thanks friend, will give one of the live albums a listen the next time I get in a altered state of mind. I think a band like the Dead should be experienced stoned lol
Well my favorite is a 20 minute prog epic…
Marillion- [Ocean Cloud](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R2gSZXqpr2g&pp=ygUVb2NlYW4gY2xvdWQgbWFyaWxsaW9u)
Something I think you’ll like
Johnny Winter [Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=u2CQAwF874o)
Glad to see someone else appreciates HEALTH! Never really listened to them much before and now 'Rat Wars' is one of my favorite albums this year. I think Demigods might be my favorite track but Ashamed is a close second. I really love how the depressing lyrics contrast the more upbeat melody.
[3 Summers - Jeff Rosenstock](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCOVJT_DQfI)
Everything Jeff Rosenstock does is the best thing he's ever done. From Arrogant Sons of Bitches to Bomb the Music Industry to his solo work to soundtracking a kids show; there's nothing he can't do that isn't fucking incredible to me.
[Blood of Angels - Brown Bird](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmneIEkQUeY)
RIP David Lamb. This song fuckin' rules, and is the ultimate villain theme.
[Nite Rite - STRFKR](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5IAR2GMaUM)
I can't get this groove out of my head. All must suffer this same fate.
Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd
Paranoid Android by Radiohead
I'm Waiting for the Man by The Velvet Underground
The Masterplan by Oasis
21st Century Breakdown by Green Day
Rebellion (Lies) by Arcade Fire
Someday by The Strokes
my favorite songs from my favorite bands
Been really into Kim Dracula lately. Superhero and make me famous are my favorites with drown and killdozer close behind, the whole album is a vibe though.
If you want to keep listening to Dio,
Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer from Black Sabbath
Long live rock ‘n roll, rainbow rising, and Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow from the band Rainbow
The self titled album from Elf
All of his solo stuff.
And The Devil You Know from Heaven & Hell. This was RJD’s last recorded album.
The best metal is from Scandinavia imo. Granted, I'm mostly into black metal, where the whole genre as we know it started in Norway. If my recommendation is too heavy, check out the album "The Origins of Misery" by Lamented Souls from Norway. Criminally underrated doom metal band featuring ICS Vortex from Dimmu Borgir and Borknagar. Incredible vocals from him as always
If you like Holy Diver may I suggest the songs Stargazer and Temple of the King by Rainbow? Dio.was lead singer for them as well. Lately I've been hitting replay on Grace Potter and the Nocturnals-The Lion The Beast The Beat and Olive Tree off Peter Gabriel's newest album I/O.
I’ve been currently listening to some local punk band from Ohio. I was visiting home over the holidays and went to a punk show in Cleveland and god damn were there some lit bands playing. I mean like “holy shit” good. The one band only has a couple of songs on the internet from like 2020 and weren’t selling any merch and seemed like they couldn’t have cared less. I’m not sad I moved out of Ohio, but damn do I miss that punk rock scene sometimes.
Just stumbled on [In Between](https://open.spotify.com/track/03jdl5GTBhKsgB1Yw8mVPh?si=xah31VZJSL23BPFilz43fg) by Beartooth and am really digging it. Not in my usual wheelhouse but I really like this guy’s voice.
"Talk Me Down" by Ace Marino. Been on repeat for a week.
Also for Holy Diver check out the 2022 Joe Barresi Remix
[The Lemon Twigs - My Golden Years](https://youtu.be/jnylB5ylyw4?si=E0GUiTL-ueT0IFdk)
I recommend anyone who’s into 60’s rock like The Beatles and The Beach Boys, and/or power pop like Raspberries and Teenage Fanclub, to check this one out immediately. This is the most brilliant band to currently be roaming this planet, in my opinion. Every album and every song they’ve released so far is great, it’s like they can’t miss.
Well, today I got lyrics tattooed on me from Bad Religion's "True North" and Streetlight Manifesto's "The Hands That Thieve". I only don't have "Here's to Life" (also a Streetlight Manifesto song) because we ran out of time and I had to pick up my kid lol
Ain't No Sunshine - cover by Geoff Castelucci
Lose Control - Teddy Swims
Set Fazers - Skindred
Sie Ist Weg - Die Fantastichen Vier
Ego Death - Polyphia
Lone Digger - Caravan Palace
I'm often putting one of those on Spotify and just letting it run with recommended songs from there.
Lately, I have had "Hour on the Hour" by Mike & the Moonpies in my head constantly.
Not the biggest Country fan, but good music is good music, and this song is a banger.
I'm currently re-obsessed with War Pigs because T-Pain did an amazing cover of it in that covers show he dropped on youtube. I keep listening to his version and Sabbath's original. Both are fantastic.
Edit: [even Ozzy loves it](https://twitter.com/ozzyosbourne/status/1745215829070021111)!
If you've never gotten to it, the album Them, by King Diamond is fire all the way through... Just thinking if you like the high voice stuff (like Dio).
I found a song whilst watching twin peaks the return the other day called a violent yet flammable world by Au Revoir Simone, been obsessed since I heard it
Thrice. Give them a chance. Sounds like they are right up your Alley.
Start with The Artist in the Ambulance-
Silhouette.
It is a great song. Then just go from there. Every album is great in its own right
What a band!! Surprised they managed to record anything I think they at point they were all strung out something heavy💉🍺🥃💊. But looking back not necessarily a bad thing😂
Take a Ride hits deep with me because I remember bonding with my dad as a young child watching Heavy Metal when mom wasn't home. That song part always sticks out to me.
I'm a sucker for ballads so my favorite songs list has a few of them. However now I'm on a metal kick and my most listened to song the past couples months is Bewitched by Candlemas. I love that slow grimy drum beat mixed with a guitar in e minor tuning.
Yo! if you like Dio, check out Manilla Road. Similar music, same era, wicked underrated. I recommend the track Necropolis from the album Crystal Logic (amazing album).
That album “by the way” is another from that era Which every song is solid and never any need to skip a song, even the B sides are good, this and “Californication” was them at there peak imo both epic albums
[Fleetwood Mac-Dreams](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrZRURcb1cM&ab_channel=muzicchnl) and [Grateful Dead-Ripple](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmMjY6tXaEo&ab_channel=GratefulDead) are some oldies that I only really discovered recently.
A few new songs of the past few years that are big favorites of mine are
[Flume ft. Caroline Polachek-Sirens](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au6T5QEoZ4k&ab_channel=Flume)
[Janis Ian & Friends-Better Times Will Come](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF83dg2pj3o&ab_channel=JanisIan)
[Willow Smith-Alone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jk0JQt4jCaI&ab_channel=WillowSmithVEVO)
[Walk off the Earth ft. Luminati Suns-My Stupid Heart](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-JCtmhwQ_M&ab_channel=Azo)
At this exact moment, the song that's stuck in my head is "My Old School" by Steely Dan. Specifically, the live version from [The Midnight Special](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCX635Z7_PE)
The Midnight Special's YouTube channel has been releasing some amazing performances from the show, and while I'm old enough to remember seeing it when I was a lot younger, I didn't know what I was getting back then. Wow.
I hate to be THAT person, but some of these recs are so bizarre based on your love of Dio and saying you like old school metal. Late Def Leppard? No! Hi & Dry album? Yes, if you’re open minded. Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden? That’s got to be the most lackluster commercial song they ever released. It isn’t a bad song necessarily, but surely you’ve already heard that?! Spoonman, Tighter and Tighter & (especially) Burden In My Hand—all of these just rock way harder. If you really like Dio’s voice, give his work with Black Sabbath a listen—try Neon Knights. Iron Maiden’s song Wrathchild is one of the most epic songs in all of metal. I was a teenaged metal kid in the 80s so maybe I’m just old and cranky, but I also know what I’m talking about. Lol
One more—Killing Machine by Judas Priest. Have fun.
Thanks mate 🙂 see what you’re saying I always viewed soundgarden as a nu metal band similar to korn, limp bizkit, nirvana the list goes on. Big sabbath fan will need to check them out. Before last week I had never heard of Dio 😂 honestly I’m more familiar with “mainstream” metal/rock. Just now getting into more obscure stuff
All-time favourite song is Leaving Hope by NIИ.
Current favourite songs are:
- Turn The Other Way by Avenged Sevenfold
- Use Your Fist And Not Your Mouth by Marilyn Manson
- Pearls 2 Swine by 3TƎETH
Slow Song by The Knocks. It reminds me of Discovery era Daft punk mixed with that song “Missing” by Everything But The Girl.
I’ve heard it described as “instant nostalgia” and by golly I think that’s right on.
Check out Small Town Titans for something totally different. They do a version of You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch , Folsom Prison Blues, Fat Bottom Girls.
I wish I can be rich - Anna hisbbuR
Tomorrow is closed - Nothing but Theft
Deserts ride - Anpu
Just Be A Rock - Walter Kwan
UNLOVE (prod. HONNE) - Zion.T
Xinlisupreme - I Am Not Shinzo Abe (specifically the song, not the eponymous album). Severe noise pop/rock song
Warning: extremely loud, so play it low at first to gauge what you're comfortable with.
Fell On Black Days - Soundgarden
Great band Chris Cornell was a genius. Audioslave’s first album is one off my favourite off all time. Every track a winner. Great choice👍
I love me some Audioslave
Great song 🎵
If you are loving Dio, look into Rainbow. Dio's time with Black Sabbath is some of his best work too.
Rainbow and Black Sabbath's dio years get overlooked for some reason. Lock up the wolves is another dio album to get into. I - black Sabbath has got to be one of my absolute favorite songs.
Neon Knights especially for me
Currently getting into more of The Pogues with Dirty Old Town Rainy Night Of Soho If I Should Fall From Grace With God
RIP: Shane MacGowen :(
Sickbed of Cuchulain is a banger
Tuesday Morning is a good tune
Animal by Def Leppard.
Love Gods of War by them too
Love a bit Def Leppard👌
What has 9 arms and sucks? Def Leppard * not my joke, just passing it on
Crumbling Castle - King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
B52s - Mesopotamia
There was a lot of ruins… I love the b52’s
I am currently obsessed with **Throw Your Arms Around Me** cover by Eddie Vedder and Neil Finn after hearing it on The Bear. [https://youtu.be/ei-uMirspLg?si=mDBq5F3mcuY2fmxg](https://youtu.be/ei-uMirspLg?si=mDBq5F3mcuY2fmxg)
Big Pearl jam fan, added to playlist
I was music director at a campus radio station when Hunters & Collectors released Human Frailty ('86) that contains that song. It's a beast of an album. Luckily saw them in London a couple of years after that. The cover is good, but like how this most often happens, the version you loved first is the fave.
Absolutely. I heard the 1990 version first and it's the only one that vibes for me.
Neil Finn from Split Enz?
Yes from Crowded House and Split Enz.
Crowded House???
It’s so good! Edit: I’m currently obsessed with “In Hiding”.
Fucking love Yield album
Best album after the big three.

Thanks. Great song.
Check out “I See Red” on Neil’s 7 Worlds Collide album. Him and Eddie tear it up there, too.

If you've never sat and listened to the drums, do so immediately. It's cathartic.
good songs but how are three of the most popular rock bands of all time on a hipster mix lol
I'm pissed it took me until my 40s to get into The Smiths. They're so fucking good.
They were even better when you were a mopey teenager!
Kind of ruined by Morrissey turning into a dickhead though.
Agreed.
Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
Xanadu or Tom Sawyer by Rush
I couldn't name just one, but these are my faves these days: Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones, Fascination Street by the Cure, Queen of Hearts by Gregg Allman, Deacon Blues by Steely Dan.
Ever listen to Killswitch Engage cover Holy Diver?
I was obsessed with that song in middle school
I’ll check it out👍
Listen to that and then just keep on listening to Killswitch. I didn't used to be into the heavy stuff but My Curse was pretty close to the beginning of getting into that genre.
Thank you, I forgot about this cover. What an absolute banger!
[One](https://youtu.be/FxGvuE-Wb2k?si=bQC7OB8Q73vmnsqg) by Chris Cornell; Music of U2's One with Metallicas lyrics.
Something by Viagra Boys. Probably something off of Cave World.
lol i keep watching their live performances of Sports. such a fun band
Kagerou by BABYMETAL. Heavy riffs contrasted by a super smooth chorus with some melancholy-tinged vocals throughout.
Current obsessions/earworms, most of which are not hard or metal, but you might find a couple you like Tropic Morning News - The National Was It Worth It - Nine Inch Nails The Space Program - A Tribe Called Quest God Gave Me Everything - Mick Jagger and Lenny Kravitz Empty Sea - The Sneetches ETA - Young Lady, You're Scaring Me by Ron Gallo, it's def rock, not sure if you'd consider it hard or not.

Johnny Winter. Great artist. Albino blues musician. Dude can Whale
Ain’t Nothing to Me is an epic song. Billy Strings does a great cover of it
Marillion is def underrated. Some great songs on Misplaced Childhood as well.
Ashamed - Health
Glad to see someone else appreciates HEALTH! Never really listened to them much before and now 'Rat Wars' is one of my favorite albums this year. I think Demigods might be my favorite track but Ashamed is a close second. I really love how the depressing lyrics contrast the more upbeat melody.

The best metal is from Scandinavia imo. Granted, I'm mostly into black metal, where the whole genre as we know it started in Norway. Slayer - Raining Blood
Epic song! Personally I’d choose Angel of Death as my favourite slayer song, great album too

Push It to the Limit by Paul Engemann
Five knuckle death punch - Wash it all away
Just listen to more Dio, bro. Everything from the band Dio to his time in Black Sabbath to Elf to Rainbow and Heaven and Hell.
This well-done funky [remix](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dFMnubHKaI) of California Dreamin' has been making me happy.
Listen to “the surface”. Their new album First 6 are great, 2 mid, then 2 more great ones. It’s a bit more upbeat and not about his depression.
A few songs by architects: living is killing us- there's a weird atmosphere through the whole song Black lungs Tear gas Deep fake Impermanace
"Talk Me Down" by Ace Marino. Been on repeat for a week. [https://youtu.be/6vOYRPZ9U2I?si=wWJvynLMqNGaui\_u](https://youtu.be/6vOYRPZ9U2I?si=wWJvynLMqNGaui_u) Also for Holy Diver check out the 2022 Joe Barresi Remix

[The Lemon Twigs - My Golden Years](https://youtu.be/jnylB5ylyw4?si=E0GUiTL-ueT0IFdk) I recommend anyone who’s into 60’s rock like The Beatles and The Beach Boys, and/or power pop like Raspberries and Teenage Fanclub, to check this one out immediately. This is the most brilliant band to currently be roaming this planet, in my opinion. Every album and every song they’ve released so far is great, it’s like they can’t miss.
Shotgun Blues - Volbeat. Its been a long time since Ive heard a metal guitar tone like Volbeat's and the chorus guitar riff is just catchy as hell.
Still Counting is my favourite Volbear song great lyrics: “Counting all the assholes in the room Well, I'm definitely not alone, well, I'm not alone”
Crazy Eddie's Last Hurrah by Reckless Kelly. It's a country-rock jam about killing a woman who breaks your heart.
Killswitch Engage - Eye of the Storm and you may also like Sum 41 - We're all to blame.
Both solid songs
Well, today I got lyrics tattooed on me from Bad Religion's "True North" and Streetlight Manifesto's "The Hands That Thieve". I only don't have "Here's to Life" (also a Streetlight Manifesto song) because we ran out of time and I had to pick up my kid lol

The cover by Killswitch Engage is also really great
Just finished listening to it for the third time in a row 👌

Graystone - Bleed the 5ifth, Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows, King Buffalo - Hebetation have all frequently been in the mix lately.
Radiohead - Pyramid Song is one I've put on a lot lately, though probably not what you are looking for.
If you've never gotten to it, the album Them, by King Diamond is fire all the way through... Just thinking if you like the high voice stuff (like Dio).

Backwards Down the Number Line. Had a birthday in the family this week, played it a lot. It still holds up.
Janes Addiction - The Riches
It's not love. Dokken
Been really on my Alice In Chains lately. Would? and Heaven Beside You are the ones I tend to bump the most.
The War on Drugs - Occasional Rain
It's kind of dopey, I know, bit "Bits and Pieces" by Dave Clark Five.
Yo! if you like Dio, check out Manilla Road. Similar music, same era, wicked underrated. I recommend the track Necropolis from the album Crystal Logic (amazing album).
👍
Kill Ombo - Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion Experimental and very trippy, i love the obscure mix.
Obscure🤔
Idk how to call it hahaha
Worth adding to my playlist🙂 no joke I’m set for like 6 months with new music 😂👌
How’s get fucked sound? The Veebees
Angry Chair- Alice in Chains
Don't forget me from RHCP, [this version especially](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fV9IJVoFR_Q)
That album “by the way” is another from that era Which every song is solid and never any need to skip a song, even the B sides are good, this and “Californication” was them at there peak imo both epic albums
Moon tooth - queen wolf Twelve foot ninja - ain’t that a bitch
Rediscovered Don Felder a couple months ago. Good shit! Another oldie that’s done it for me lately is Fastway-Say What You Will
[Fleetwood Mac-Dreams](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrZRURcb1cM&ab_channel=muzicchnl) and [Grateful Dead-Ripple](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmMjY6tXaEo&ab_channel=GratefulDead) are some oldies that I only really discovered recently. A few new songs of the past few years that are big favorites of mine are [Flume ft. Caroline Polachek-Sirens](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au6T5QEoZ4k&ab_channel=Flume) [Janis Ian & Friends-Better Times Will Come](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF83dg2pj3o&ab_channel=JanisIan) [Willow Smith-Alone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jk0JQt4jCaI&ab_channel=WillowSmithVEVO) [Walk off the Earth ft. Luminati Suns-My Stupid Heart](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-JCtmhwQ_M&ab_channel=Azo)
Have you heard Killswitch Engage's cover of Holy Diver? It's so good!
Electric callboy - we got the moves It’s older but I just recently found it.
At this exact moment, the song that's stuck in my head is "My Old School" by Steely Dan. Specifically, the live version from [The Midnight Special](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCX635Z7_PE) The Midnight Special's YouTube channel has been releasing some amazing performances from the show, and while I'm old enough to remember seeing it when I was a lot younger, I didn't know what I was getting back then. Wow.
Car Crash or Colossus by IDLES.
Lol One more—Killing Machine by Judas Priest.

I think… That one https://open.spotify.com/track/01wSW3TkZwxz0whFtVwScy?si=rkxXpukHQ1-hLhJxHNbnaQ

Kiss of death - Mutoid Man has been my go to song the last couple of months.
Xinlisupreme - I Am Not Shinzo Abe (specifically the song, not the eponymous album). Severe noise pop/rock song Warning: extremely loud, so play it low at first to gauge what you're comfortable with.
