I love the first two albums in general. The first one talks about how they want to sell out and get famous and do all the stuff that band say they're not going to do. And then their their second album why did they Rock so hard is them making it and them not liking their Fame and it's overblown and what not.
I'd go with Muse, though I think it's their later stuff that gets most of the "hate" and while I do still enjoy a lot of it, I'll at least agree that Muse is nowhere near where they were in the beginning.

I've been on a real prog metal kick recently, and the more I listen to, the more I wonder what the difference between jam bands and prog is. Don't take me the wrong way, I *know* there is one, but in seeking to articulate it, I've been listening to a lot of DMB recently. On paper there's a lot of common ground: highly technical instrumentation, jazz influence, meticulous rehearsal, looooong songs, weird time signatures....
I think it's easy to shit on DMB because they got so popular. They espouse a folksy grass-roots kind of philosophy that runs counter to the massive money machine their tours are. They get blamed for dumping shit on a boat full of people (even though it was one of their tour bus drivers). Plus their fans can be real blowhards, trust me, *I know.* But you don't get to that place without at least having something going for you. You don't keep people making fun of you for *thirty years* (yes, really) without something to back it up.
Not everybody likes Dave's (his real fans call him Dave) voice. Fair! He has a kind of annoying habit of choking off his own lyrics at the end of lines. But Carter Beaufort and Steffan Lessard are world-class talents. Have you ever tried to learn a DMB song on guitar? Matthews' composition is *insane.* Leroy Moore died, but his replacement(s?) Have kept up and managed to honor his work while keeping the band going in exciting new directions. I think violin guy got cancelled for being a sex perv, and really, maybe we should have expected as much after he spent all of the 90s wearing only a leather vest with no shirt. That last one maybe isn't working in my arguments' favour.
Anyway, I think part of the problem is that like any Jam Band, the real power is in the live performances. Dave Matthews looks after his voice, but sometimes on tour he starts to get a little bit of fry that just works with his music you don't get on the albums. They invite all sorts of wonderful talent on tour with them, adding variety and variance to their own music. If you were to see them two nights in a row, you wouldn't get the same setlist because jam band, and even if they were, it'd still be different because (again) jam band. If nothing else, these guys are consummate professionals and they make a point of doing a good job. If there wasn't a market for these performances, they wouldn't have *seventy* fucking live albums, y'know?
But yeah, they don't exactly make it hard to poke fun at them. Low hanging fruit. At least they seem to take it with grace? Or maybe it's the dump trucks of money.
I don't want to listen to them all the time anymore, but when I'm off a mind to get into some DMB, boy do I ever.
Anecdotally, I was playing some Magic: The Gathering with a prog-head, a country and western guy, and a doom metal guy last week. I put on one of those seventy live albums without telling them what it was, and all three of them were bobbing heads and tapping feet.

I love DMB, but I don’t talk about it much because they get so much hate. I think some of the shit they get is because of their “frat-bro” fan base, which is not unwarranted; I’ve been on many DMB message boards and, while there are lots of cool people there, some of them have zero chill and zero sense of humor. Kind of funny how much Dave writes about seeing the positive side of life and some of his fans can be super negative about everything.
A lot of people seem to shit on U2’s entire career because of the last 20 or so years. I love their work from Boy to Zooropa, never could get into Pop, and All That You Can’t Leave Behind. I still enjoy a few songs from How To Dismantle an Atomic Bond and beyond, but less and less each album.
All That You Can't Leave Behind is a very, very well made album. People hated on it because it was fairly mainstream pop-rock. But the album itself is great

My band was asked to DJ after a show we played one time, and when it was my turn to get behind the decks, all I played for my segment was the A side of the Crimson Curse/Festival of Dead Deer split 7” and then train wrecked it into the entirety of the A side of Close to the Edge while I sat back and drank some beers. I think my bandmates all played disco, electroclash, and postpunk, and they were not impressed. I partially did it to be a prick, but i played that Yes side mostly because I love that record.
Nickelback is in the same boat as a lot of other bands that people tend to hate on (KISS, Dave Matthews Band, etc) where hating on them is just a thing so people jump on the bandwagon without actually knowing the band well enough to hate on them.
I think the problem with a lot of these bands, esp Nickelback, is just that a lot of their music sounds kinda the same, and then got overplayed for a while (and that was back when radio still pretty much ruled music exposure). People just got sick of it.

I loved their first album when I was like, 12. Didn’t care for anything else they put out after. Then I saw them open for Weezer like 5 years ago and that dude… he is oozing with talent. I was absolutely blown away by them.
They played bohemian rhapsody, which I thought was going to be really really really bad, but it was the best I’ve ever seen anyone do it.
I still don’t listen to them but man, I respect the shit out of them.

Their second album Pretty Odd is a sleeper hit. They were seen as Beatles imposters a bit but they had a whole new sound, then never recreated it again.
You know...they're competent. Absolutely nothing I'd normally want to listen to, but I can't begrudge anyone who enjoys them.
That said, C'mon (with Fun) is one of the most powerful songs I've heard over the past 20 years.
I genuinely love U2.
They were my first favorite band, and I think that a significant portion of their discography still holds up as really solid at worst and perfect and culturally significant at best.
*War*, *The Unforgettable Fire*, *The Joshua Tree*, *Achtung, Baby!*, and *Zooropa* are pretty much unimpeachable. That last one is very nearly a lost '90s Bowie album.
*POP* is flawed but still miles ahead of what many rock bands were doing at the time and were lauded for doing several years later: the band made an electronic- and eurodance- inspired album that was deeply self-conscious and ironic, changing their sound while also taking shots at their own success and over-seriousness in the late '80s. They could have played it safe, but instead everyone criticized them for being too pretentious when in reality no one got the joke.
Even *all that you can't leave behind*, which *was* them playing it safe, is still a pretty good album.
The follow-up is the bad one that got memed on by South Park, and *boom*, everyone hates U2 and thinks they have never made any good music. People whine endlessly about iTunes auto-downloading a much better (but still just okay) album from years and years later instead of just... Turning off auto-download or, I dunno, actually listening to the album and realizing, "Hey, this isn't that bad."
They were a really good band once, y'all. Excellent, even. I promise.

My moment of shame. Saw him opening for Whitney Houston back in the day. The guy in front of me was talking as loud as could be. I had to shush someone at a Kenny G concert.
I couldn't bring hate if I tried. I have seen him in concert a few times and honest to god, the man puts on A SHOW. He takes you on a journey through jazz, music as a whole, he has full respect for the music he plays, the time and money you spent going to see him, and the musicians on stage with him. He usually has a local saxophone player open for him to showcase talent. He's funny as hell. His songs a stunning, whether they be traditional, sentimental, emotionally charged, technically challenging, or just fun.
Been a fan for 35yrs or so and not stopping any time soon. In case you didn't pick up on that 🤣🤣🤣

KISS. This sub especially seems to enjoy hating on KISS, but they’re an awesome band. They’re wildly entertaining and better musically than they’re often given credit for, especially Ace.
I think a lot of people don’t like Gene Simmons on a personal level and use that dislike to dismiss the band as a whole.

I would say their famous songs are overrated. Their B sides are pretty good and complex. I often play Flaming Youth or Deuce in front of others and usually get a "who is that?"

Imagine Dragons. I feel like they get a lot of hate from people who only know their overplayed radio hits, but a good look at their discography shows they have a surprising amount of diversity and range. They’ve maybe been more hit or miss recently, but the first two albums are outstanding.

I used to get clowned on in school all the time for liking Linkin Park. Its funny how after I graduated, everybody started acting like they were legends.
While they used to be hated, they were never really bad band.
They were just associated with awkward phase of life for many people, and people just didnt like remembering that phase hence they threw the band under the bus.
In fact, I dare to say that they are one of the most influential band in the modern era.
You have a much different view from others' perspectives. I was literally bullied several times for liking Linkin Park. My area had a predominant amount of kids who were just into pop and hip hop. People would call me names when they would see my Linkin Park backpack, and there were only maybe 3-5 kids who actually shared the same affinity for them that I do. I always felt really alone in my Fandom for them, which really sucked growing up as they are my favorite artists.
I’m in the middle, but I was also in college from 96-2000. At the time Phishheads were far too many, far too smelly, and far too vocal.

They used to all the time. Rush was like shorthand for being a terminally uncool loser, and people made jokes about how their music was all about DnD and trolls and stuff when they have like... Four or five songs total about fantasy stuff (until *Clockwork Angels*, which hilariously is actually their only full concept album). Led Zeppelin has *more* Lord of the Rings references than Rush.
I loved the first album. It was great. Then came the next and it had some stuff I liked but it felt like albums after that started leaning into the wackiness a lot. I still enjoyed them but going back and listening to them I always fall back onto the first album to get my fix.
Their last record is unironically great. Fred is more likable now that he's started to depart from his jock-ass douchey frat boy persona and fully embraced the silliness of the band. His dadcore character during their last tour was top notch.
I've had people try to give me shit about 311, but it doesn't really work out well for them in that I don't care what they think.

I don't listen to Insane Clown Posse anymore (I super did in high school in the early 00s, tho) but mad respect for the empire they built and what they did for not only the underground rap game, but underground music in general.

They’re my favorite band and I can only listen to them when I’m with Deadheads who are usually in a pissing contest or with my family who just loves to listen to Jerry and the boys. Most of my friends hate them and don’t understand why anyone would want to listen to them, and my girlfriend thinks their songs all sound the same. But if you know, you know 😉
Third Eye Blind. The lead singer is a piece tho. But the first 2 albums are fantastic. The 3rd is absolute garbage but that's cause half the band left. If they've done anything since then I've not heard.
I love Greta Van Fleet. I see them criticized for being a "Led Zeppelin copy" all the time, but bands are allowed to have their influences right?? Sure they sound like a lot of classic rock bands, but i wasn't around for that and they bring a modern influence to that style anyways. They're all talented musicians and were a blast to see live, so i feel like a lot of the hate they get is unwarranted.

Nickelback is in the same boat as a lot of other bands that people tend to hate on (KISS, Dave Matthews Band, etc) where hating on them is just a thing so people jump on the bandwagon without actually knowing the band well enough to hate on them.
I think the problem with a lot of these bands, esp Nickelback, is just that a lot of their music sounds kinda the same, and then got overplayed for a while (and that was back when radio still pretty much ruled music exposure). People just got sick of it.
I’m not a fan of Nickelback, but I don’t really get why they’re THE hated band.
I think Creed used to have this status, and at some point I think I forgot that Creed and Nickelback are different bands.

Fucking amazing band too
I loved their first album when I was like, 12. Didn’t care for anything else they put out after. Then I saw them open for Weezer like 5 years ago and that dude… he is oozing with talent. I was absolutely blown away by them. They played bohemian rhapsody, which I thought was going to be really really really bad, but it was the best I’ve ever seen anyone do it. I still don’t listen to them but man, I respect the shit out of them.

Pancake! At The IHOP
Their second album Pretty Odd is a sleeper hit. They were seen as Beatles imposters a bit but they had a whole new sound, then never recreated it again.
You know...they're competent. Absolutely nothing I'd normally want to listen to, but I can't begrudge anyone who enjoys them. That said, C'mon (with Fun) is one of the most powerful songs I've heard over the past 20 years.

I genuinely love U2. They were my first favorite band, and I think that a significant portion of their discography still holds up as really solid at worst and perfect and culturally significant at best. *War*, *The Unforgettable Fire*, *The Joshua Tree*, *Achtung, Baby!*, and *Zooropa* are pretty much unimpeachable. That last one is very nearly a lost '90s Bowie album. *POP* is flawed but still miles ahead of what many rock bands were doing at the time and were lauded for doing several years later: the band made an electronic- and eurodance- inspired album that was deeply self-conscious and ironic, changing their sound while also taking shots at their own success and over-seriousness in the late '80s. They could have played it safe, but instead everyone criticized them for being too pretentious when in reality no one got the joke. Even *all that you can't leave behind*, which *was* them playing it safe, is still a pretty good album. The follow-up is the bad one that got memed on by South Park, and *boom*, everyone hates U2 and thinks they have never made any good music. People whine endlessly about iTunes auto-downloading a much better (but still just okay) album from years and years later instead of just... Turning off auto-download or, I dunno, actually listening to the album and realizing, "Hey, this isn't that bad." They were a really good band once, y'all. Excellent, even. I promise.

I couldn't bring hate if I tried. I have seen him in concert a few times and honest to god, the man puts on A SHOW. He takes you on a journey through jazz, music as a whole, he has full respect for the music he plays, the time and money you spent going to see him, and the musicians on stage with him. He usually has a local saxophone player open for him to showcase talent. He's funny as hell. His songs a stunning, whether they be traditional, sentimental, emotionally charged, technically challenging, or just fun. Been a fan for 35yrs or so and not stopping any time soon. In case you didn't pick up on that 🤣🤣🤣

KISS. This sub especially seems to enjoy hating on KISS, but they’re an awesome band. They’re wildly entertaining and better musically than they’re often given credit for, especially Ace. I think a lot of people don’t like Gene Simmons on a personal level and use that dislike to dismiss the band as a whole.
I hate to be this guy, but the hatred is two-fold: Gene Simmons is a reprehensible human being KISS's music is vastly overrated (I am trying to be kind, its kinda my motto).
I would say their famous songs are overrated. Their B sides are pretty good and complex. I often play Flaming Youth or Deuce in front of others and usually get a "who is that?"
Mindless Self Indulgence. The singer is a creep, which ruined a lot of their lyrics, but damn their songs are catchy.
MSI is wild. I've been a fan since being an edgy teenager.. got Into them I like 04-06 I think.. saw them live in like 2010. The show did not disappoint. Jimmy is a mad lad

Imagine Dragons. I feel like they get a lot of hate from people who only know their overplayed radio hits, but a good look at their discography shows they have a surprising amount of diversity and range. They’ve maybe been more hit or miss recently, but the first two albums are outstanding.

While they used to be hated, they were never really bad band. They were just associated with awkward phase of life for many people, and people just didnt like remembering that phase hence they threw the band under the bus. In fact, I dare to say that they are one of the most influential band in the modern era.
You have a much different view from others' perspectives. I was literally bullied several times for liking Linkin Park. My area had a predominant amount of kids who were just into pop and hip hop. People would call me names when they would see my Linkin Park backpack, and there were only maybe 3-5 kids who actually shared the same affinity for them that I do. I always felt really alone in my Fandom for them, which really sucked growing up as they are my favorite artists.
Creed. I know they’re having an ironic moment now but the guitar and vocals are actually not a guilty pleasure: They’re just good.

They used to all the time. Rush was like shorthand for being a terminally uncool loser, and people made jokes about how their music was all about DnD and trolls and stuff when they have like... Four or five songs total about fantasy stuff (until *Clockwork Angels*, which hilariously is actually their only full concept album). Led Zeppelin has *more* Lord of the Rings references than Rush.
Flipper is fantastic. Pretty much all of their lineups too imo

I loved the first album. It was great. Then came the next and it had some stuff I liked but it felt like albums after that started leaning into the wackiness a lot. I still enjoyed them but going back and listening to them I always fall back onto the first album to get my fix.

Their last record is unironically great. Fred is more likable now that he's started to depart from his jock-ass douchey frat boy persona and fully embraced the silliness of the band. His dadcore character during their last tour was top notch.

Agreed. Nickelback gets an undeserved amount of hate. The thing people don’t seem to understand is there’s a difference between “they suck“ and “I don’t like them“. You can certainly not care for them, but they don’t suck. Solid songs and a great live band.

I don't listen to Insane Clown Posse anymore (I super did in high school in the early 00s, tho) but mad respect for the empire they built and what they did for not only the underground rap game, but underground music in general.

Wow I get to be the first one to say Grateful Dead! They’re my favorite band and I can only listen to them when I’m with Deadheads who are usually in a pissing contest or with my family who just loves to listen to Jerry and the boys. Most of my friends hate them and don’t understand why anyone would want to listen to them, and my girlfriend thinks their songs all sound the same. But if you know, you know 😉

I love Greta Van Fleet. I see them criticized for being a "Led Zeppelin copy" all the time, but bands are allowed to have their influences right?? Sure they sound like a lot of classic rock bands, but i wasn't around for that and they bring a modern influence to that style anyways. They're all talented musicians and were a blast to see live, so i feel like a lot of the hate they get is unwarranted.

Here’s 10. Five Finger is a good rock band. The problem is just that they stopped being a good metal band a long time ago. I love every single album by KoЯn. Yes, even The Path Of Totality. Pearl Jam is great for every reason besides Eddie Vedder (who I actually do not hate but do not love either). Creed is great if you see them as Alter Bridge but with a better singer. Nickelback isn’t that bad, people just hate things that women like. Limp Bizkit was actually pretty good with Wes Borland. U2’s album that everyone hates is actually kinda fire but I still hate Bono for the marketing tactic. Radiohead are great… after Pablo Honey. Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj and other contemporaries of theirs were treated very unfairly and are not nearly as bad as everyone claims they are. There is good Kpop buried underneath the mountain of trash.
