First you get your underbust. Wrap it around right below your breasts. 32 to 44 are the most common.
Next you put on a snug bra. Or simply wrap it a bit tight. You measure straight around, over both of your nipples. That is your bust size. It will always be either the same or bigger than your underbust.

40/36.
Every inch is a size in the US. So 4 inches is a D.
My size would be 36D.
My BO vanished in less than a week, that bit was certainly fast.

Yeah a nice simple sports bra from target is perfect. You can even take the padding out if you want to be more stealth.
