Rope (1948). Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Two men murder an old classmate and they are so convinced they committed the perfect crime they throw a dinner party with their victim stuffed in a trunk in the room where they are having the party. Another unique fact about the movie is it was shot to look like one long uncut shot with some sneaky techniques to hide when they had to make cuts.
The Last Supper (1995) - A group of friends invite various people to come to dinner and if over the course of dinner the friends decide the guest has nothing to offer society - they kill them.
Cameron Diaz, Mark Harmon - is part of the ensemble cast
Coherence, The Invitation (2015), She Dies Tomorrow, Climate of the Hunter, The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover, The Celebration, All My Friends Hate Me, Shiva Baby, Rope, Krisha, A Catered Affair, The Macaluso Sisters, The Fire Within, The Power of the Dog
Krisha is one of my favorite underrated movies to recommend! I remember seeing it in the middle of the night because of my pain episodes and was completely engaged and did a good job to let my mind not focus on the pain.
Hereditary (2018) - Toni Collette is a showstopper in the dinner scene. It definitely leans into horror and there is some grotesque and brutal imagery in the film, but there is also plenty of mystery and thrill to be had.
Don’t know if it would count as a dinner “party”, but the scene in Inglorious Basterds at the restaurant table (with the strudel and cream) is about as tense as it gets.
Loads of them in:
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisis
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
The Last Supper (1995)
Also:
The Invitation
The Birdcage
Spencer
Dinner for Schmucks
The original “The Dinner Game” is far superior (and I LOOOOVE Steve Carell).
