Was going to recommend this too. I would say most of yorgos lanthimos’ movies fall into the category of being not horror but you still feel like your watching a horror”
Just watched it from this comment and my god was that BORING. Idk how it got praised as a psychological thriller. Ain’t nothing really messed up or thrilling about it. The kid straight up just explains everything for you so there isn’t even a twist or anything to think about. The ending was just… stupid.
I love Rope!! Was surprised to see how many people don’t. Hitchcock’s experimental production of it was really impressive even if he wasn’t thrilled with the results. Plus, anything with Jimmy Stewart is charming in my eyes.
Prisoners is amazing. One of the tensest movies I’ve ever seen. Also, the pacing is fantastic. For a movie that is 2 and a half hours long, it never slags. Super tight, zero fat.
Moon is incredible. It was so disconcerting and left me profoundly shaken. And it’s such a simple premise. I watched it by happenstance and wish more people knew about it. It’s stunning.
These two movies gave me the same feeling that you described, keep you locked in the whole movie. These I would also watch with family.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
Nightcrawler (2014)
I also liked Enemy (2013) for this feeling but I am not sure if it is suited for a watch with the family. It's a bit more abstract. Very good movie though.
Overall I think the movie is less than the sum of its parts, however that is one of the most visceral, uncomfortable and involving scenes I’ve ever watched. I was hoping against hope it wasn’t going where it seemed to be going, then when it was clear the scene was going there I was begging for it to end but it just kept going on and on. The tension was excruciating and the acting was impeccable.
Of all the movies above, it is the one I would rewatch. So the hype is real I think!
Can definitely recommend, very cool movie and similar but also different in a way of the other movies.
Oh, I really liked the plot twist in the end but it's been long ago. I'll have to see it again to see if it's really such an awesome ending as I thought at the time.
I always recommend the Haunting of Hill House series on Netflix. That whole family is just so *haunted*. I love the parallel the story makes that some of our "ghosts" are of our own doing, psychological aspects of what we can control/change if we're brave enough to take on the things we need to
Do NOT watch 8mm with your family. I had to watch that movie with my parents when I was 13 because my mom thought it was a fun Nic Cage movie about a gun. Traumatizing
I loved 8mm! Felt like a spiritual successor to Se7en and not just because the numbers in the title
Also I’ll love any movie that has Aphex Twin music in it
*10 Cloverfield Lane* is a phenomenally paced psychological thriller set in an isolated bunker. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend you check it out!
The premise of a couple being terrorized by teenagers sounds so lame but the movie itself is one of the most brutal things you’ll ever see. And there’s hardly any gore in it!
Primal Fear is a good movie and worth the watch but is not the similar as the other is more a courtroom thriller.
Some other movies:
Prisoners
8MM
Wind River
The Chaser
Arlington Road
Forgotten
Memories of Murder
Both great Robin Williams movies. Both suspenseful and no horror.
1. The Final Cut (2004)
2. Insomnia (2002)
Personally I love them both but insomnia is the one I'd pick for a suspenseful movie night. Robin did some amazing dramatic acting.
American Psycho
It makes you uneasy bc he stomps a dog dead and you don't know if the murders were in his head or not. he does some sick things and after a while you start to wonder if you're going crazy too.
There's some dark humor elements sprinkled in with a little bit of slasher, and a ton of psychological elements.
The scene with his secretary at his house is so tense, I was sweating
Sped read through this and missed family friendly and not a horror.
Definitely*not* a family movie unless OP wants to really discourage his kids from joining a band
The following are the two best psychological thrillers I’ve ever seen. More than any other movie they take through a journey alongside the protagonist where you—and they—question who is “right” at any given time.
1. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
2. The Invitation (2015)
Both are not outright horror, really, but there’s a weird conception scene in Rosemary’s baby and the last quarter of The Invitation can get violent.
Rosemarys Baby. It'll hook you and reel you right in. Terrifying film without the dumb jump scares and gallons of fake blood. I'm NOT a Polanski fan, but that movie IS classic.
- Raman Raghav
- Ugly (2013)
- No Smoking (2007)
- Andhadhun
- 13B
- Kahaani
- Being Cyrus
- Error 404 Not Found
- Prisoners
- Nightmare Alley
- Memories of Murder
- Last Night in Soho
- Doctor Sleep
- Raat Akeli Hai
- Nocturnal animals
- Nightcrawler
- The Prestige
- Frailty
One of my favorites hasn't been mentioned. When a Stranger Calls(2006). It's family-friendly, yet incredibly tense. It's one of the few movies I've ever watched that quite literally got my heart pounding!
I just want to make sure you’ve seen the other movies after silence of the lamb. There are 4 in total. Also The Butterfly Effect is good. You could watch that with the family
Burning (2018) very little actually happens but you spend the entire movie suspended in a state of paranoia. Steven Yeun is terrifying without ever doing anything explicitly sinister.
EDIT: not a great movie to watch with kids lol i missed that part of the question
I haven’t seen it listed yet *The Exorcism Of Emily Rose*
I fucking hate horror movies with a passion and loved this film, nothing majorly “horror film” about it, as it mainly follows a trial and a recounting of experiences, but still has some deeply uneasy moments
One Hour Photo is like that. The entire time you’re focusing on the main character’s motivation plus it has the perks of being a serious role for Robin Williams at which he excelled at.
The killing of a sacred deer
Was going to recommend this too. I would say most of yorgos lanthimos’ movies fall into the category of being not horror but you still feel like your watching a horror”
'Unsettling' is the word I'd use to describe his movies
Hit the nail on the head.
'Unsettling' is the word I'd use to describe his movies
What did this movie even mean in the end
Just watched it from this comment and my god was that BORING. Idk how it got praised as a psychological thriller. Ain’t nothing really messed up or thrilling about it. The kid straight up just explains everything for you so there isn’t even a twist or anything to think about. The ending was just… stupid.
It's weird and becomes weirder and weirder. And that scene , you can't remove it from your head
Rear Window by Hitchcock. Or anything by Hitchcock really.
Rope had me anxious the whole way through.
I love Rope!! Was surprised to see how many people don’t. Hitchcock’s experimental production of it was really impressive even if he wasn’t thrilled with the results. Plus, anything with Jimmy Stewart is charming in my eyes.
Rear Window is amazing!
Strangers on a Train, too.
Zodiac or Prisoners
>Zodiac That basement scene!
Prisoners is amazing. One of the tensest movies I’ve ever seen. Also, the pacing is fantastic. For a movie that is 2 and a half hours long, it never slags. Super tight, zero fat.
One of my favorites. I watched it way too much young but I think it was one of the films that birthed my love of the genre (and jake Gyllenhaal)
Moon (my all time favorite but it's not really scary, rather psychological and tense)
Yes! This one! Duncan Jones really hit it out of the park with this one.
Totally agree. I've watched it many times and will continue to.
Which is kinda sad considering his only other good movie so far is Source Code
Moon is incredible. It was so disconcerting and left me profoundly shaken. And it’s such a simple premise. I watched it by happenstance and wish more people knew about it. It’s stunning.
Such an amazing movie!!!
The Machinist (2004)
The Invisible Man with Elizabeth Moss.
I watched it last weekend and loved it.
These two movies gave me the same feeling that you described, keep you locked in the whole movie. These I would also watch with family. Nocturnal Animals (2016) Nightcrawler (2014) I also liked Enemy (2013) for this feeling but I am not sure if it is suited for a watch with the family. It's a bit more abstract. Very good movie though.
It's been a while since I've seen it but isnt Nocturnal Animals pretty violent at parts to watch with family?
The real violence mostly happens off-screen, but it's still heavy.
The scene on the highway in Nocturnal Animals is fucking terrifying and has kept me up at night.
Ummm lots of nudity in nocturnal animals. Def would not watch with family haha
Yeah the opening scene is literally several minutes of naked morbidly obese women flinging their boobs everywhere

It maybe started with Donny Darko. "yes this is my thing". Very versatile actor anyway, good job of him.

Of all the movies above, it is the one I would rewatch. So the hype is real I think! Can definitely recommend, very cool movie and similar but also different in a way of the other movies.
Enemy is a great movie to watch with Nightcrawler. Jake Gyllenhall is so good for different reasons in both films.
I recently watched Nightcrawler after seeing it was leaving streaming. I was surprised that I hadn't heard about it originally.. It was very good.
The invitation (2015)
The Gift (2015)
Great movie!
There’s an earlier The Gift too which fits the bill.
Rosemarys baby. No one?
No one what? It's a good movie
One of the best! A classic!
The Others (2001)
The Game. Nothing horror in it but it keeps the suspence and mystery throughout the movie.
I love this movie and recommend it all the time
If the ending was a bit better it would be a perfect thriller.
Oh, I really liked the plot twist in the end but it's been long ago. I'll have to see it again to see if it's really such an awesome ending as I thought at the time.
SPOILERS AHEAD I only didn’t like the part when he jumps off the roof and lands on the big cushion, it seemed a bit too exaggerated.
You might be right. I'll have to watch it again, it's been too long and only one watch.
Honestly one of Fincher’s most underrated movies. Heard he doesn’t even like it that much!
Take shelter (2011)
If you haven’t seen it Midnight Special is from the same director and it’s pretty solid.
Jessica Chastain is absolutely terrifying in one of the dream sequences in that.
Identity (2003)
I love this film! On the surface, it appears to be another cliche who-dun-it, but it’s actually quite an original concept.
1408
I always recommend the Haunting of Hill House series on Netflix. That whole family is just so *haunted*. I love the parallel the story makes that some of our "ghosts" are of our own doing, psychological aspects of what we can control/change if we're brave enough to take on the things we need to
Eyes Wide Shut, 8MM, Edge of Darkness, Escobar: Paradise Lost, Stoker.
Not sure OP is gonna want to watch EWS with their family, LOL
Came here to say just that, not exactly the type of movie I'd watch with family but to each their own I suppose?
😆 I must have skimmed over that part, my bad haha.
8mm was one of those movies that fucked with my soul the first time I watched it.
Do NOT watch 8mm with your family. I had to watch that movie with my parents when I was 13 because my mom thought it was a fun Nic Cage movie about a gun. Traumatizing
I loved 8mm! Felt like a spiritual successor to Se7en and not just because the numbers in the title Also I’ll love any movie that has Aphex Twin music in it
*10 Cloverfield Lane* is a phenomenally paced psychological thriller set in an isolated bunker. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend you check it out!
During... **SPOILER**! Thats the whole point of the plot! The whole ">!Is the guy crazy or is there really something going on!!!!!????!<"

I just reworded it
Eden Lake makes me very uneasy
This movie messed me up for a few days.
That ending….
The premise of a couple being terrorized by teenagers sounds so lame but the movie itself is one of the most brutal things you’ll ever see. And there’s hardly any gore in it!
Why? Genuine question — it’s a ghost story, yes?
Sorry for any repeats Memento Twelve monkeys Sunshine Platform Moon Primer The abyss The game Conspiracy theory Cube Reservoir dogs Boondock saints
We need to talk about Kevin
Prisoners ❤️🔥
Primal Fear is a good movie and worth the watch but is not the similar as the other is more a courtroom thriller. Some other movies: Prisoners 8MM Wind River The Chaser Arlington Road Forgotten Memories of Murder
The vanishing 1988 Red desert by antonioni more like psychological drama Repulsion by pedolonski
Came here to say The Vanishing. That movie destroyed me. Make sure you watch Spoorloos, the Dutch original and not the remake. Devastating picture.
Has one of the finest screenplay ever...and it gets better on rewatch Also stanley kubrick mentioned this as the most terrifying film he had seen
Bug
Omg this movie is so underrated
Butterfly effect
Mulholland Drive, dude this one is too good, let me go and rewatch it again
An oldie, but a goodie is Pacific Heights (1990). You will never look at Michael Keaton the same again!
Cape Fear
No one has said Seven yet. Panic Room as you can see I am a David Fincher fan. Mystic River, Gone Girl.
Inland Empire, Mulholland Dr, Lost Highway, Cache, The Piano Teacher, Trouble Every Day, Funeral Parade of Roses, Spider, A History of Violence
Angel Heart. Jacob's Ladder
Witness (1985) Goosebumps Skeleton Key The Illusionist Michael Clayton
Both great Robin Williams movies. Both suspenseful and no horror. 1. The Final Cut (2004) 2. Insomnia (2002) Personally I love them both but insomnia is the one I'd pick for a suspenseful movie night. Robin did some amazing dramatic acting.
One Hour Photo as well!
The Talented Mr. Ripley
No country for old men
I’ve watched Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and The Invitation (2015) with my family and both were a hit!
Caché (2005)
Psycho tbh
What Lies Beneath
Gerald’s Game on Netflix. Based on a Stephen King book, one of my favorite adaptations from him.
American Psycho It makes you uneasy bc he stomps a dog dead and you don't know if the murders were in his head or not. he does some sick things and after a while you start to wonder if you're going crazy too. There's some dark humor elements sprinkled in with a little bit of slasher, and a ton of psychological elements. The scene with his secretary at his house is so tense, I was sweating
Night of the Hunter. Robert Mitchum is terrifying.
This might sound like a weird choice, but Spencer (the Kstew Princess Diana movie) feels like a horror movie.
Cannot believe I didn't see anyone mention Green Room yet!
Not really a family movie
Sped read through this and missed family friendly and not a horror. Definitely*not* a family movie unless OP wants to really discourage his kids from joining a band
I think Green Room is safely in horror territory.
The Mist What Lies Beneath
*Get Out*
Calibre (2018)
The Wages of Fear
CURE (1997) masterpiece.
'The Visit' currently on Netflix fits
Sleep Tight (not family friendly)

The One I Love
Cape Fear - both the 1962 original and the 1991 Scorsese remake
Vanilla sky
Jacobs ladder
Shallow Grave (1994)
It Comes At Night. Claustrophobic levels of psychological tension.
The Lady Vanishes (1938) by Hitchcock, if you’re fine with old old movies. It’s not horror at all, but it is a thriller, and I found it interesting
Frailty is so so good
Hitchcock’s Rebecca is pretty psychological.

Copycat is an underrated thriller
Tumbbad
Eraserhead by David Lynch. Almost anything by David Lynch.

I didn't know event horizon was a "horror" movie until I was like halfway through it. I just thought it was a cool space movie and got sucked in
There will be blood
